We explore the tree limits recently defined by Elek and Tardos. In particular, we find tree limits for many classes of random trees. We give general theorems for three classes of conditional Galton-Watson trees and simply generated trees, for split trees and generalized split trees (as defined here), and for trees defined by a continuous-time branching process. These general results include, for example, random labelled trees, ordered trees, random recursive trees, preferential attachment trees, and binary search trees.
In this article it is shown that the Brownian motion on the continuum random tree is the scaling limit of the simple random walks on any family of discrete $n$-vertex ordered graph trees whose search-depth functions converge to the Brownian excursion as $n\to\infty$. We prove both a quenched version (for typical realisations of the trees) and an annealed version (averaged over all realisations of the trees) of our main result. It has been claimed in Aldous, Miermont and Pitman [PTRF, 2004] that all Lévy trees are mixings of inhomogeneous continuum random trees. We give a rigorous proof of this claim in the case of a stable branching mechanism, relying on a new procedure for recovering the tree distance from the graphical spanning trees that works simultaneously for stable trees and inhomogeneous continuum random trees.
We prove that the uniform unlabelled unrooted tree with n vertices and vertex degrees in a fixed set converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense after a suitable rescaling to the Brownian continuum random tree. This proves a conjecture by Aldous. Moreover, we establish Benjamini-Schramm convergence of this model of random trees.
We consider a random tree and introduce a metric in the space of trees to define the ``mean tree'' as the tree minimizing the average distance to the random tree. When the resulting metric space is compact we have laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for sequence of independent identically distributed random trees. As application we propose tests to check if two samples of random trees have the same law.

We survey recent developments about random real trees, whose prototype is the Continuum Random Tree (CRT) introduced by Aldous in 1991. We briefly explain the formalism of real trees, which yields a neat presentation of the theory and in particular of the relations between discrete Galton-Watson trees and continuous random trees. We show that for many models of random trees, the independence number divided by the size converges almost surely to a constant as the size grows to infinity; the trees that we consider include random recursive trees, binary and $m$-ary search trees, preferential attachment trees, and others. The limiting constant is computed, analytically or numerically, for several examples. The method is based on Crump-Mode-Jagers branching processes.
We study the local convergence of critical Galton-Watson trees and Levy trees under various conditionings. Assuming a very general monotonicity property on the functional of random trees, we show that random trees conditioned to have large functional values always converge locally to immortal trees. We consider a recurrent random walk on a rooted tree in random environment given by a branching random walk. Up to the first return to the root, its edge local times form a Multi-type Galton-Watson tree with countably infinitely many types. When the walk is the diffusive or sub-diffusive, by studying the maximal type of this Galton-Watson tree, we establish the asymptotic behaviour of the largest local times of this walk during n excursions, under the annealed law.

We consider the model of random trees introduced by Devroye (1999), the so-called random split trees. The model encompasses many important randomized algorithms and data structures. We then perform supercritical Bernoulli bond-percolation on those trees and obtain a precise weak limit theorem for the sizes of the largest clusters. We also show that the approach developed in this work may be useful for studying percolation on other classes of trees with logarithmic height, for instance, we study also the case of $d$-regular trees.
We consider a multivariate distributional recursion of sum-type as arising in the probabilistic analysis of algorithms and random trees. We prove an upper tail bound for the solution using Chernoff's bounding technique by estimating the Laplace transform. The problem is traced back to the corresponding problem for binary search trees by stochastic domination. The result obtained is applied to the internal path length and Wiener index of random b-ary recursive trees with weighted edges and random linear recursive trees. Finally, lower tail bounds for the Wiener index of these trees are given.

The $k$-cut number of rooted graphs was introduced by Cai et al. as a generalization of the classical cutting model by Meir and Moon. In this paper, we show that all moments of the k-cut number of conditioned Galton-Watson trees converges after proper rescaling, which implies convergence in distribution to the same limit law regardless of the offspring distribution of the trees. We show that the transience or recurrence of a random walk in certain random environments on an arbitrary infinite locally finite tree is determined by the branching number of the tree, which is a measure of the average number of branches per vertex. This generalizes and unifies previous work of the authors. It also shows that the point of phase transition for edge-reinforced random walk is likewise determined by the branching number of the tree. There is an unproven duality theory hypothesizing that random discrete trees and their poissonized embeddings in continuous time share fundamental properties. We give additional evidence in favor of this theory by showing that several classes of random trees growing in discrete time and their poissonized counterparts have the same limiting degree Gini index. The classes that we consider include binary search trees, binary pyramids and random caterpillars.

We study the size properties of a general model of fractal sets that are based on a tree-indexed family of random compacts and a tree-indexed Markov chain. These fractals may be regarded as a generalization of those resulting from the Moran-like deterministic or random recursive constructions considered by various authors. Among other applications, we consider various extensions of Mandelbrot's fractal percolation process.
We study biased random walk on subcritical and supercritical Galton-Watson trees conditioned to survive in the transient, sub-ballistic regime. By considering offspring laws with infinite variance, we extend previously known results for the walk on the supercritical tree and observe new trapping phenomena for the walk on the subcritical tree which, in this case, always yield sub-ballisticity. This is contrary to the walk on the supercritical tree which always has some ballistic phase.
We introduce a model of branching interlacements for general critical offspring distributions. It consists of a countable collection of infinite tree-indexed random walk trajectories on $Z^d,d\geq5$. We show that this model turns out to be the local limit of the tree-indexed random walk in a discrete torus, conditioned on the size proportional to the volume of the torus. This generalizes the previous results of Angel, Ráth and the author, for the critical geometric offspring distribution. We consider a transient random walk $(X_n)$ in random environment on a Galton--Watson tree. Under fairly general assumptions, we give a sharp and explicit criterion for the asymptotic speed to be positive. As a consequence, situations with zero speed are revealed to occur. In such cases, we prove that $X_n$ is of order of magnitude $n^Λ$, with $Λ\in (0,1)$. We also show that the linearly edge reinforced random walk on a regular tree always has a positive asymptotic speed, which improves a recent result of Collevecchio \cite{Col06}.
In this short paper, we consider the Once-reinforced random walk with reinforcement parameter $a$ on trees with bounded degree which are transient for the simple random walk. On each of these trees, we prove that there exists an explicit critical parameter $a_0$ such that the Once-reinforced random walk is almost surely recurrent if $a>a_0$ and almost surely transient if $a<a_0$. This provides the first examples of phase transition for the Once-reinforced random walk.
Large deviation principles and related results are given for a class of Markov chains associated to the "leaves" in random recursive trees and preferential attachment random graphs, as well as the "cherries" in Yule trees. In particular, the method of proof, combining analytic and Dupuis-Ellis type path arguments, allows for an explicit computation of the large deviation pressure.
We show that an algorithmic construction of sequences of recursive trees leads to a direct proof of the convergence of random recursive trees in an associated Doob-Martin compactification; it also gives a representation of the limit in terms of the input sequence of the algorithm. We further show that this approach can be used to obtain strong limit theorems for various tree functionals, such as path length or the Wiener index.
We propose a new, direct, correlation-free approach based on central moments of profiles to the asymptotics of width (size of the most abundant level) in some random trees of logarithmic height. The approach is simple but gives precise estimates for expected width, central moments of the width and almost sure convergence. It is widely applicable to random trees of logarithmic height, including recursive trees, binary search trees, quad trees, plane-oriented ordered trees and other varieties of increasing trees.
We are interested in the independence number of large random simply generated trees and related parameters, such as their matching number or the kernel dimension of their adjacency matrix. We express these quantities using a canonical tricolouration, which is a way to colour the vertices of a tree with three colours. As an application we obtain limit theorems in $L^p$ for the renormalised independence number in large simply generated trees (including large size-conditioned Bienaymé-Galton-Watson trees).
We encode a certain class of stochastic fragmentation processes, namely self-similar fragmentation processes with a negative index of self-similarity, into a metric family tree which belongs to the family of Continuum Random Trees of Aldous. When the splitting times of the fragmentation are dense near 0, the tree can in turn be encoded into a continuous height function, just as the Brownian Continuum Random Tree is encoded in a normalized Brownian excursion. Under mild hypotheses, we then compute the Hausdorff dimensions of these trees, and the maximal Hölder exponents of the height functions.
We prove the Einstein relation, relating the velocity under a small perturbation to the diffusivity in equilibrium, for certain biased random walks on Galton--Watson trees. This provides the first example where the Einstein relation is proved for motion in random media with arbitrary deep traps.
By considering a continuous pruning procedure on Aldous's Brownian tree, we construct a random variable $Θ$ which is distributed, conditionally given the tree, according to the probability law introduced by Janson as the limit distribution of the number of cuts needed to isolate the root in a critical Galton-Watson tree. We also prove that this random variable can be obtained as the a.s. limit of the number of cuts needed to cut down the subtree of the continuum tree spanned by $n$ leaves.
In this paper we consider random walks on Galton-Watson trees with random conductances. On these trees, the distance of the walker to the root satisfies a law of large numbers with limit the effective velocity, or speed of the walk. We study the regularity of the speed as a function of the distribution of conductances, in particular when the distribution of conductances converges to a non-elliptic limit.
Consider the Aldous--Pitman fragmentation process [Ann Probab, 26(4):1703--1726, 1998] of a Brownian continuum random tree ${\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}}$. The associated cut tree cut$({\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}})$, introduced by Bertoin and Miermont [Ann Appl Probab, 23:1469--1493, 2013], is defined in a measurable way from the fragmentation process, describing the genealogy of the fragmentation, and is itself distributed as a Brownian CRT. In this work, we introduce a shuffle transform, which can be considered as the reverse of the map taking ${\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}}$ to cut$({\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}})$.

We study maximal clades in random phylogenetic trees with the Yule-Harding model or, equivalently, in binary search trees. We use probabilistic methods to reprove and extend earlier results on moment asymptotics and asymptotic normality. In particular, we give an explanation of the curious phenomenon observed by Drmota, Fuchs and Lee (2014) that asymptotic normality holds, but one should normalize using half the variance.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of once-reinforced biased random walk (ORbRW) on Galton-Watson trees. Here the underlying (unreinforced) random walk has a bias towards or away from the root. We prove that in the setting of multiplicative once-reinforcement the ORbRW can be recurrent even when the underlying biased random walk is ballistic. We also prove that, on Galton-Watson trees without leaves, the speed is positive in the transient regime. We consider random walks indexed by arbitrary finite random or deterministic trees. We derive a simple sufficient criterion which ensures that the maximal displacement of the tree-indexed random walk is determined by a single large jump. This criterion is given in terms of four quantities : the tail and the expectation of the random walk steps, the height of the tree and the number of its vertices. The results are applied to critical Galton--Watson trees with offspring distributions in the domain of attraction of a stable law.

We study simple random walk on the uniform spanning tree on Z^2 . We obtain estimates for the transition probabilities of the random walk, the distance of the walk from its starting point after n steps, and exit times of both Euclidean balls and balls in the intrinsic graph metric. In particular, we prove that the spectral dimension of the uniform spanning tree on Z^2 is 16/13 almost surely.
In this paper, we consider the linearly reinforced and the once-reinforced random walk models in the transient phase on trees. We show the large deviations for the upper tails for both models. We also show the exponential decay for the lower tail in the once-reinforced random walk model. On the other hand, the lower tail is in polynomial decay for the linearly reinforced random walk model.
