Using a semi-analytic guided-mode expansion technique, we present theory and analysis of intrinsic propagation losses for topological photonic crystal slab waveguide structures with modified honeycomb lattices of circular or triangular holes. Although conventional photonic crystal waveguide structures, such as the W1 waveguide, have been designed to have lossless propagation modes, they are prone to disorder-induced losses and backscattering. Topological structures have been proposed to help mitigate this effect as their photonic edge states may allow for topological protection. However, the intrinsic propagation losses of these structures are not well understood and the concept of the light line can become blurred. For four example topological edge state structures, photonic band diagrams, loss parameters, and electromagnetic fields of the guided modes are computed. Two of these structures, based on armchair edge states, are found to have significant intrinsic losses for modes inside the photonic band gap, more than 100 dB/cm, which is comparable to or larger than typical disorder-induced losses using slow-light modes in conventional photonic crystal waveguides, while the other two structures, using the valley Hall effect and inversion symmetry, are found to have a good bandwidth for exploiting lossless propagation modes below the light line.
We present a new paradigm in the field of photonic crystals and metamaterials, applying the resonant-state expansion (RSE) to planar photonic-crystal structures. The RSE allows us to understand and quantify optical resonances in photonic-crystal structures in terms of the analytic resonant states of a homogeneous planar waveguide. The RSE provides an efficient and reliable tool for accurate calculation of a complete set of the resonant states of a photonic-crystal slab, which is required for the correct description and a better understanding of its optical spectra. For the proof of principle, …
In our work we focus on the accurate computation of light propagation in finite size photonic crystal structures with the finite element method (FEM). We discuss how we utilize numerical concepts like high-order finite elements, transparent boundary conditions and goal-oriented error estimators for adaptive grid refinement in order to compute radiation leakage in photonic crystal fibers and waveguides. Due to the fast convergence of our method we can use it e.g. to optimize the design of photonic crystal structures with respect to geometrical parameters, to minimize radiation losses and to com…
We reveal a triangular-lattice planar photonic crystal supports Bloch modes with radially and azimuthally symmetric electric field distributions at the top band-edge of the first photonic band. Bifurcated from the corresponding Bloch modes, two cylindrical vector resonant modes are achieved by simply enlarging the central air-hole of the planar photonic crystal, which have high quality factors around 3,000 and small mode volume. The far-field radiations of the two resonant modes present high-quality cylindrical vector beam profiles. The resonant modes could be optimized by modifying the six ne…
We present a formal analogy between the eigenvalue problem for guided scalar modes in a low-contrast photonic bandgap fiber and quasi-stationary TM modes of a two-dimensional (2D) photonic structure. Using this analogy, we numerically study the confinement losses of disordered microstructured fibers through the leakage rate of an open 2D system with high refractive index inclusions. Our results show that for large values of the disorder, the confinement losses increase. However, they also suggest that losses might be improved in strongly disordered fibers by exploring ranges of physical parame…
We theoretically investigate Klein tunneling processes in photonic artificial graphene. Klein tunneling is a phenomenon in which a particle with Dirac dispersion going through a potential step shows a characteristic angle- and energy-dependent transmission. We consider a generic photonic system consisting of a honeycomb-shaped array of sites with losses, illuminated by coherent monochromatic light. We show how the transmission and reflection coefficients can be obtained from the steady-state field profile of the driven-dissipative system. Despite the presence of photonic losses, we recover the…
A theoretical study of photonic bands for one-dimensional (1D) lattices embedded in planar waveguides with strong refractive index contrast is presented. The approach relies on expanding the electromagnetic field on the basis of guided modes of an effective waveguide, and on treating the coupling to radiative modes by perturbation theory. Photonic mode dispersion, gap maps, and intrinsic diffraction losses of quasi-guided modes are calculated for the case of self-standing membranes as well as for Silicon-on-Insulator structures. Photonic band gaps in a waveguide are found to depend strongly on…
Second-harmonic and sum-frequency mixing phenomena associated with 3D-localized photonic modes are studied in InP-based planar photonic crystal microcavities excited by short-pulse radiation near 1550 nm. Three-missing-hole microcavities that support two closely-spaced modes exhibit rich second-order scattering spectra that reflect intra- and inter-mode mixing via the bulk InP chi(2) during ring-down after excitation by the broadband, resonant pulse. Simultaneous excitation with a non-resonant source results in tunable second-order radiation from the microcavity.
The possibility of compensating absorption in negative-index metatamterials (NIMs) doped by resonant nonlinear-optical centers is shown. The role of quantum interference and extraordinary properties of four-wave parametric amplification of counter-propagating electromagnetic waves in NIMs are discussed.

Combining these topological photonic structures with nonlinear effects will unlock advanced functionalities such as nonreciprocity and active tunability. Here we introduce the emerging field of nonlinear topological photonics and highlight recent developments in bridging the…
Polarization-resolved second-harmonic spectra are obtained from the resonant modes of a two-dimensional planar photonic crystal microcavity patterned in a free-standing InP slab. The photonic crystal microcavity is comprised of a single missing-hole defect in a hexagonal photonic crystal host formed with elliptically-shaped holes. The cavity supports two orthogonally-polarized resonant modes split by 60 wavenumbers. Sum-frequency data are reported from the nonlinear interaction of the two coherently excited modes, and the polarization dependence is explained in terms of the nonlinear susceptib…
We propose a novel method to generate vector beams in planar photonic crystal cavities with multiple missing-hole defects. Simulating the resonant modes in the cavities, we observe that the optical fields in each defect have different phase and polarization state distributions, which promise the compositions of vector beams by the scattered light from the defects. The far-field radiation patterns of the cavity modes calculated via the Sommerfeld diffraction theory present vector beams possessing hollow intensity profiles and polarization singularities. In addition, the extraction efficiencies …
In this paper, we propose a low-noise, bandwidth tunable microwave photonics filter (MPF) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) losses. By suppressing the out-of-band signal with two broadened symmetric SBS losses, pass bandwidth can be tuned from 500 MHz to 10 GHz. Considering the limited interaction in the center frequency range, a flat-top response with 0.3 dB ripple is easily achieved. Unlike a SBS gain based filter, due to the transparency of the pass band in our proposed filter, hardly no noise is detected in a noise measurement against an obvious maximum 5 dB noise pedestal for…
A technique is demonstrated which efficiently transfers light between a tapered standard single-mode optical fiber and a resonant mode of a high-Q photonic crystal cavity with mode volume less than a cubic wavelength in size. Cavity mode quality factors of 4.7 x 10^4 are measured, and a total fiber-to-cavity coupling efficiency of 44% is demonstrated.
Loss is inevitable for the optical system due to absorption of materials, scattering caused by the defects and surface roughness. In quantum optical circuits, the loss can not only reduce the intensity of signal, but also affect the performance of quantum operations. In this work, we divide losses into unbalanced linear loss and shared common loss, and provide a detailed analysis on how loss affects the integrated linear optical quantum gates. It is found that the orthogonality of eigenmodes and the unitary phase relation of the coupled waveguide modes are destroyed by the loss. As a result, t…
Structural hierarchy and complex 3D architecture are characteristics of biological photonic designs that are challenging to reproduce in synthetic materials. Top-down lithography allows for designer patterning of arbitrary shapes, but is largely restricted to planar 2D structures. Self-assembly techniques facilitate easy fabrication of 3D photonic crystals, but controllable defect-integration is difficult. In this paper we combine the advantages of top-down and bottom-up fabrication, developing two techniques to deposit 2D-lithographically-patterned planar layers on top of or in between invers…
This paper proposes a novel multifunctional sensing platform based on multimode planar photonic crystals (PPCs). We analytically and numerically demonstrate that the reflection spectrum of PPCs exhibits multiple high-Q resonant modes, and the fundamental and higher-order modes respond distinctively to external mechanical and thermal perturbations, rendering the PPCs superior capability for detection and discrimination of multiple parameters. We further demonstrate simultaneous pressure and temperature sensing with a PPC sensor. Other advantages of PPC sensors include on-chip integration and wa…
Near-zero-index platforms arise as a new opportunity for light manipulation with boosting of optical nonlinearities, transmission properties in waveguides and constant phase distribution. In addition, they represent a solution to impedance mismatch faced in photonic circuitry offering several applications in quantum photonics, communication and sensing. However, their realization is limited to availability of materials that could exhibit such low-index. For materials used in the visible and near-infrared wavelengths, the intrinsic losses annihilate most of near-zero index properties. The desig…
We theoretically study light propagation in guided Bloch surface waves (BSWs) supported by photonic crystal ridges. We demonstrate that low propagation losses can be achieved just by a proper design of the multilayer to obtain photonic band gaps for both light polarizations. We present a design strategy based on a Fourier analysis that allows one to obtain intrinsic losses as low as 5 dB/km for a structure operating in the visible spectral range. These results clarify the limiting factors to light propagation in guided BSWs and represent a fundamental step towards the development of BSW-based …
Atomic-level imperfections play an increasingly critical role in nanophotonic device performance. However, it remains challenging to accurately characterize the sidewall roughness with sub-nanometer resolution and directly correlate this roughness with device performance. We have developed a method that allows us to measure the sidewall roughness of waveguides made of any material (including dielectrics) using the high resolution of atomic force microscopy. We illustrate this method by measuring state-of-the-art photonic devices made of silicon nitride. We compare the roughness of devices fabr…
We theoretically study the interaction between dual cavity modes in a planar photonic microcavity structure in the optical communication wavelength range. The merging and splitting of cavity mode is analyzed with realistic microcavity structures. The merging of dual cavity resonance into a single cavity resonance is achieved by changing the number of layers between the two cavities. The splitting of single cavity resonance into dual cavity resonance is obtained with an increase in the reflectivity of mirrors in the front and rear side of the microcavity structure. The threshold condition for t…
We analyze the scattering of the surface plasmon incident at a planar interface between two dielectrics. By using the scattering matrix technique, developed by Oulton et al. [Phys. Rev. B 76, 035408 (2007)], we calculate the transmission, reflection coefficients and radiative losses for oblique incident angles. We found that the transmission of a surface wave through a single interface between two dielectrics may be accompanied with radiation losses of 10-40 per cent of the plasmon energy.
The resonant-state expansion (RSE) provides a precise and computationally cheap tool to find resonant states in complex systems using the optical modes of a simpler system as a basis. We apply the RSE to a photonic crystal slab in order to identify and analyze its bound states in the continuum (BICs). We show that the RSE is a useful and reliable method for not only finding the BICs but also for differentiating between accidental and symmetry-protected BICs, as well as for understanding their formation from the basis modes and evolution with structural and material parameters of the system. Th…
A theory of light diffraction from planar quasicrystalline lattice with resonant scatterers is presented. Rich structure, absent in the periodic case, is found in specular reflection spectra, and interpreted as a specific kind of Wood anomalies, characteristic for quasicrystals. The theory is applied to semiconductor quantum dots arranged in Penrose tiling.

This paper reports a versatile, roll-to-roll and backend compatible technique for the fabrication of high-index-contrast photonic structures on both silicon and plastic substrates. The fabrication technique combines low-temperature chalcogenide glass film deposition and resist-free single-step thermal nanoimprint to process low-loss (1.6 dB/cm), sub-micron single-mode waveguides with a smooth surface finish using simple contact photolithography. Using this approach, the first chalcogenide glass micro-ring resonators are fabricated by thermal nanoimprint. The devices exhibit an ultra-high quali…
A metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide for electromagnetic energy transport utilizing dispersion engineering to dramatically increase lateral energy confinement via a two-dimensional pattern of Au dots on an optically thin Si membrane is described. Using finite-difference time-domain simulations and coupled-mode theory, we show that phase-matched evanescent excitation from conventional fiber tapers is possible with efficiencies > 90 % for realistic geometries. Energy loss in this waveguide is mainly due to material absorption, allowing for 1/e energy decay distances of about 2 mm for excitatio…
Complex photonic integrated circuits (PIC) may have strongly non-planar topologies that require waveguide crossings (WGX) when realized in single-layer integration platforms. The number of WGX increases rapidly with the complexity of the circuit, in particular when it comes to highly interconnected optical switch topologies. Here, we present a concept for WGX-free PIC that rely on 3D-printed freeform waveguide overpasses (WOP). We experimentally demonstrate the viability of our approach using the example of a $4 \times 4$ switch-and-select (SAS) circuit realized on the silicon photonic platfor…
The polarizations of topological edge modes in the vicinity of optical Weyl points were numerically studied in chiral photonic crystals. We investigated two kinds of rotationally stacked woodpile structures in which planar rod arrays were vertically stacked one-by-one with an in-plane rotation angle of 60 or 45 degrees. Both structures showed pairs of optical Weyl points having topological numbers of opposite signs for photonic bands in low orders. Topological edge states derived from the Weyl points appeared below the light line, and were strongly confined at the air interfaces in a length sh…
We study light propagation in a photonic system that shows stepwise evolution in a discretized environment. It resembles a discrete-time version of photonic waveguide arrays or quantum walks. By introducing controlled photon losses to our experimental setup, we observe unexpected effects like sub-exponential energy decay and formation of complex fractal patterns. This demonstrates that the interplay of linear losses, discreteness and energy gradients leads to genuinely new coherent phenomena in classical and quantum optical experiments. Moreover, the influence of decoherence is investigated.
The demonstration of an optical fiber based probe for efficiently exciting the waveguide modes of high-index contrast planar photonic crystal (PC) slabs is presented. Utilizing the dispersion of the PC, fiber taper waveguides formed from standard silica single-mode optical fibers are used to evanescently couple light into the guided modes of a patterned silicon membrane. A coupling efficiency of approximately 95% is obtained between the fiber taper and a PC waveguide mode suitably designed for integration with a previously studied ultra-small mode volume high-Q PC resonant cavity [1]. The micr…
The fabrication processes of silicon nitride photonic devices used in foundries require low temperature deposition, which typically leads to high propagation losses. Here, we show that propagation loss as low as 0.42 dB/cm can be achieved using foundry compatible processes by solely reducing waveguide surface roughness. By post-processing the fabricated devices using rapid thermal anneal (RTA) and furnace anneal, we achieve propagation losses down to 0.28 dB/cm and 0.06 dB/cm, respectively. These low losses are comparable to the conventional devices using high temperature, high-stress low-pres…
Integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonic circuits have recently emerged as a promising candidate for advanced photonic functions such as high-speed modulation, nonlinear frequency conversion and frequency comb generation. For practical applications, optical interfaces that feature low fiber-to-chip coupling losses are essential. So far, the fiber-to-chip loss (commonly > 10 dB) dominates the total insertion losses of typical LN photonic integrated circuits, where on-chip propagation losses can be as low as 0.03 - 0.1 dB/cm. Here we experimentally demonstrate a low-loss mode size converter for …
The evanescent coupling from a photonic crystal resonator to a micron-thick optical fiber is investigated in detail by using a 3D-FDTD method. Properly designed photonic crystal cavity and taper structures are proposed, and optimal operating conditions are found to enhance the coupling strength while suppressing other cavity losses including the coupling to the slab propagating mode and to the higher-order fiber mode. In simulation, the coupling into the fundamental fiber mode is discriminated from other cavity losses by spatial and parity filtering of the FDTD results. The coupling efficiency…
On-chip optical waveguides with low propagation losses and precisely engineered group velocity dispersion (GVD) are important to nonlinear photonic devices such as soliton microcombs. Yet, despite intensive research efforts, nonlinear integrated photonic platforms still feature propagation losses orders of magnitude higher than in standard optical fiber. The tight confinement and high index contrast of integrated waveguides make them highly susceptible to fabrication induced surface roughness. Therefore, microresonators with ultra-high Q factors are, to date, only attainable in polished bulk c…
On-chip chiral quantum light-matter interfaces, which support directional interactions, provide a promising platform for efficient spin-photon coupling, non-reciprocal photonic elements, and quantum logic architectures. We present full-wave three-dimensional calculations to quantify the performance of conventional and topological photonic crystal waveguides as chiral emitter-photon interfaces. Specifically, the ability of these structures to support and enhance directional interactions while suppressing subsequent backscattering losses is quantified. Broken symmetry waveguides, such as the non…
Relativistic electrons in a structured medium generate radiative losses such as Cherenkov and transition radiation that act as a virtual light source, coupling to the photonic densities of states. The effect is most pronounced when the imaginary part of the dielectric function is zero, a regime where in a non-retarded treatment no loss or coupling can occur. Maps of the resultant energy losses as a sub-5nm electron probe scans across finite waveguide structures reveal spatial distributions of optical modes in a spectral domain ranging from near-infrared to far ultraviolet.
The authors study the ultrafast switching-on and -off of planar GaAs/AlAs microcavities. Up to 0.8% refractive index changes are achieved by optically exciting free carriers at 1720 nm and a pulse energy of 1.8 micro Joules. The cavity resonance is dynamically tracked by measuring reflectivity versus time delay with tunable laser pulses, and is found to shift by as much as 3.3 linewidths within a few picoseconds. The switching-off occurs with a decay time of around 50 ps. The authors derive the dynamic behavior of the carrier density and of the complex refractive index. They propose that the i…
The study of topological phases of light suggests novel opportunities for creating robust optical structures and on-chip photonic devices which are immune against scattering losses and structural disorder. However, many recent demonstrations of topological effects in optics employ structures with relatively large scales. Here we discuss the physics and realisation of topological photonics on small scales, with the dimensions often smaller or comparable with the wavelength of light. We highlight the recent experimental demonstrations of small-scale topological states based on arrays of resonant…
We study semi-analytically the light emission and absorption properties of arbitrary stratified photonic structures with embedded two-dimensional magnetoelectric point scattering lattices, as used in recent plasmon-enhanced LEDs and solar cells. By employing dyadic Green's function for the layered structure in combination with Ewald lattice summation to deal with the particle lattice, we develop an efficient method to study the coupling between planar 2D scattering lattices of plasmonic, or metamaterial point particles, coupled to layered structures. Using the `array scanning method' we deal w…

We report here a monolithic photonic integration of light emitting diode (LED) with waveguide and photodetector to build a highly-integrated photonic system to perform functionalities on the GaN-on-silicon platform. Suspended p-n junction InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are used for device fabrication. Part of the LED emission is coupled into suspended waveguide and then, the guided light laterally propagates along the waveguide and is finally sensed by the photodetector. Planar optical communication experimentally demonstrates that the proof-of-concept monolithic photonic integration …

Chipscale microresonators with integrated planar optical waveguides are useful building blocks for linear, nonlinear and quantum optical devices. Loss reduction through improving fabrication processes has resulted in several integrated micro resonator platforms attaining quality (Q) factors of several millions. However only few studies have investigated design-dependent losses, especially with regard to the resonator coupling section. Here we investigate design-dependent parasitic losses, described by the coupling ideality, of the commonly employed microresonator design consisting of a microri…

In this paper, we propose an asymmetric distribution of a hexagonal lattice for achieving near-zero group velocity with negative group delay. This study reports the effect of the continuous geometric perturbation on the photonic band diagram and consequently its impact on phase velocity, group velocity, and effective refractive index. We provide a promising method for modifying the photonic band diagram for obtaining an exotic dispersion diagram. With this obtaining a broadband spanning from E to L band that envelop of light pulse traverse with almost zero velocity is promising enough to apply…
Metamaterials made of periodic arrangements of electric permittivity and magnetic permeability and arrays of resonators can provide optic properties unexperienced in conventional materials, such as negative refractive index which can be used to achieve superlensing and cloaking. Developing new simpler structures with richer electromagnetic (EM) properties and wider working frequency bands is highly demanded for fast light-based information transfer and information processing. In the present work, we propose theoretically that a honeycomb-structured LC circuit with short-range textures in induc…
Photonic topological insulators are a promising photonic platform due to the possibility of unidirectional edge states with insensitivity to bending, fabrication imperfections or environmental fluctuation. Here we demonstrate highly efficient unidirectional photonic edge mode propagation facilitated by an optical analogue of the quantum valley Hall effect. With an all-dielectric kagome lattice design, we demonstrate broadband suppressed reflection in the presence of sharp corners and further show negligible vertical losses in a semiconductor-based device at telecommunication wavelengths.
