There is a close relationship between the embedded topology of complex plane curves and the (group-theoretic) arithmetic of elliptic curves. In a recent paper, we studied the topology of some arrangements of curves which include a special smooth component, via the torsion properties induced by the divisors in the special curve associated to the remaining components, which is an arithmetic property. When this special curve has maximal flexes, there is a natural isomorphism between its Jacobian variety and the degree zero part of its Picard group. In this paper we consider curve arrangements which contain a special smooth component with a maximal flex and exploit these properties to obtain Zariski tuples which show the interplay between topology, geometry and arithmetic.
Based on a recent work by Thomas Bauer reproving the existence of Zariski decompositions for surfaces, we construct a b-divisorial analogue of Zariski decomposition in all dimensions.
We study the divisorial Zariski decomposition on varieties whose first Chern class is zero. We first prove that any exceptional divisor is contractible (up to a birational map that is an isomorphism in codimension one). We then characterize prime exceptional divisors on holomorphic symplectic manifolds.
In this note we consider the problem of integrality of Zariski decompositions for pseudoeffective integral divisors on algebraic surfaces. We show that while sometimes integrality of Zariski decompositions forces all negative curves to be $(-1)$-curves, there are examples where this is not true.
In this paper we study the embedded topology of reducible plane curves having a smooth irreducible component. In previous studies, the relation between the topology and certain torsion classes in the Picard group of degree zero of the smooth component was implicitly considered. We formulate this relation clearly and give a criterion for distinguishing the embedded topology in terms of torsion classes. Furthermore, we give a method of systematically constructing examples of curves where our criterion is applicable, and give new examples of Zariski tuples.
We give a relation between the existence of a Zariski decomposition and the behavior of the restricted volume of a big divisor on a smooth (complex) projective variety. Moreover, we give an analytic description of the restricted volume in the line of Boucksom's work. It enables us to define the restricted volume of a transcendental class on a compact Kähler manifold in natural way. The relation can be extended to a transcendental class.
We study graded rings associated to big divisors on LC pairs whose difference with the log-canonical divisor is nef. For divisors that are positive enough at the LC centers of the pair, we prove the finite generation of such rings if the pair is DLT or the dimension is low, given that a Zariski decomposition exists.
We give an example that the volume of an $\mathbb{R}$-divisor on a family of complex smooth surfaces jumps at infinite many prime divisors in the base. Our example follows the construction in \cite{1}.
In this paper we study Zariski Decomposition with support in a negative definite cycle, a variation introduced by Y. Miyaoka. We provide two extensions of the original statement, which was originally meant for effective $\Q$-divisors: we can either state it for any $\Q$-divisor, or we can take the support to be in any cycle. Ultimately, we present a new approach to Zariski Decomposition of pseudo-effective $\Q$-divisors, which consists in iterating Zariski Decomposition with support.
In this paper, we establish the Zariski decompositions of arithmetic R-divisors of continuous type on arithmetic surfaces and investigate several properties. We also develop the general theory of arithmetic R-divisors on arithmetic varieties.
Using currents with minimal singularities, we construct pointwise minimal multiplicities for a real pseudo-effective $(1,1)$-class $α$ on a compact complex $n$-fold $X$, which are the local obstructions to the numerical effectivity of $α$. The negative part of $α$ is then defined as the real effective divisor $N(α)$ whose multiplicity along a prime divisor $D$ is just the generic multiplicity of $α$ along $D$, and we get in that way a divisorial Zariski decomposition of $α$ into the sum of a class $Z(α)$ which is nef in codimension 1 and the class of its negative part $N(α)$, which is exceptio…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the close relation between Okounkov bodies and Zariski decompositions of pseudoeffective divisors on smooth projective surfaces. Firstly, we completely determine the limiting Okounkov bodies on such surfaces, and give applications to Nakayama constants and Seshadri constants. Secondly, we study how the shapes of Okounkov bodies change as we vary the divisors in the big cone.
Zariski decompositions play an important role in the theory of algebraic surfaces. For making geometric use of the decomposition of a given divisor, one needs to pass to a multiple of the divisor in order to clear denominators. It is therefore an intriguing question whether the surface has a 'universal denominator' that can be used to simultaneously clear denominators in all Zariski decompositions on the surface. We prove in this paper that, somewhat surprisingly, this condition of bounded Zariski denominators is equivalent to the bounded negativity of curves that is addressed in the Bounded N…
We show that any pseudo-effective divisor on a normal surface decomposes uniquely into its "integral positive" part and "integral negative" part, which is an integral analog of Zariski decompositions. By using this decomposition, we give three applications: a vanishing theorem of divisors on surfaces (a generalization of Kawamata-Viehweg and Miyaoka vanishing theorems), Reider-type theorems of adjoint linear systems on surfaces (including a log version and a relative version of the original one) and extension theorems of morphisms defined on curves on surfaces (generalizations of Serrano and P…
This paper is an enhancement of the previous note "Explicit computations of Zariski decompositions on P_Z^1". In this paper, we observe several properties of a certain kind of an arithmetic divisor D on the n-dimensional projective space over Z and give the exact form of the Zariski decomposition of D on the projective line over Z. Further, we show that, if n>=2 and D is big and non-nef, then, for any birational morphism f: X --> P^n_Z of projective, generically smooth and normal arithmetic varieties, we can not expect a suitable Zariski decomposition of f^*(D). We also give a concrete constru…
We prove that, on a smooth threefold, pseudoeffective divisors with closed and one-dimensional diminished base locus have birationally a Fujita-Zariski decomposition.
Let $X$ be a normal variety. Assume that for some reduced divisor $D \subset X$, logarithmic 1-forms defined on the snc locus of $(X, D)$ extend to a log resolution $\tilde X \to X$ as logarithmic differential forms. We prove that then the Lipman-Zariski conjecture holds for $X$. This result applies in particular if $X$ has log canonical singularities. Furthermore, we give an example of a 2-form defined on the smooth locus of a three-dimensional log canonical pair $(X, \emptyset)$ which acquires a logarithmic pole along an exceptional divisor of discrepancy zero, thereby improving on a similar…
In this article, we generalize several fundamental results for arithmetic divisors, such as the continuity of the volume function, the generalized Hodge index theorem, Fujita's approximation theorem for arithmetic divisors and Zariski decompositions for arithmetic divisors on arithmetic surfaces, to the case of the adelic arithmetic divisors.
In this paper, we study the geometry of trisections on certain rational elliptic surfaces. We utilize Mumford representations of semi-reduced divisors in order to construct trisections and related plane curves with interesting properties explicitly. As a result we are able to construct new examples of Zariski pairs. Especially, we show the existence of a family of Zariski pairs that degenerate to the same conic-line arrangement.
The purpose of this paper is to exhibit infinite families of conjugate projective curves in a number field whose complement have the same abelian fundamental group, but are non-homeomorphic. In particular, for any $d>3$ we find Zariski tuples parametrized by the $d$-roots of unity up to complex conjugation. As a consequence, for any divisor $m$ of $d$, $m\neq 1,2,3,4,6$, we find arithmetic Zariski $\frac{ϕ(m)}{2}$-tuples with coefficients in the corresponding cyclotomic field. These curves have abelian fundamental group and they are distinguished using a linking invariant.
We exhibit a pseudoeffective R-divisor D_λon the blow-up of P^3 at nine very general points which lies in the closed movable cone and has negative intersections with a set of curves whose union is Zariski dense. It follows that the diminished base locus B_-(D_λ) = \bigcup_{A ample}} B(D_λ+A) is not closed and that D_λdoes not admit a Zariski decomposition in even a very weak sense. By a similar method, we construct an R-divisor on the family of blow-ups of P^2 at ten distinct points, which is nef on a very general fiber but fails to be nef over countably many prime divisors in the base.
We consider a version of the Lipman-Zariski conjecture for logarithmic vector fields and logarithmic $1$-forms on pairs. Let $(X,D)$ be a pair consisting of a normal complex variety $X$ and an effective Weil divisor $D$ such that the sheaf of logarithmic vector fields (or dually the sheaf of reflexive logarithmic $1$-forms) is locally free. We prove that in this case the following holds: If $(X,D)$ is dlt, then $X$ is necessarily smooth and $\lfloor D\rfloor $ is snc. If $(X,D)$ is lc or the logarithmic $1$-forms are locally generated by closed forms, then $(X,\lfloor D\rfloor)$ is toroidal.
This is the second part of our work on Zariski decomposition structures, where we compare two different volume type functions for curve classes. The first function is the polar transform of the volume for ample divisor classes. The second function captures the asymptotic geometry of curves analogously to the volume function for divisors. We prove that the two functions coincide, generalizing Zariski's classical result for surfaces to all varieties. Our result confirms the log concavity conjecture of the first named author for weighted mobility of curve classes in an unexpected way, via Legendr…
We study the cone of Moriwaki divisors on \bar{M}_g by means of augmented base loci. Using a result of Moriwaki, we prove that an R-divisor D satisfies the strict Moriwaki inequalities if and only if the augmented base locus of D is contained in the boundary of \bar{M}_g. Then we draw some interesting consequences on the Zariski decomposition of divisors on \bar{M}_g, on the minimal model program of \bar{M}_g and on the log canonical models \bar{M}_g(α).
The purpose of this paper is two-fold. We first prove a series of results, concerned with the notion of Zariski multiplicity, mainly for non-singular algebraic curves. These results are required in the paper "A Theory of Branches for Algebraic Curves",(*), where, following Severi, we introduced the notion of the "branch" of an algebraic curve. Secondly, we use results from the cited paper, (*), in order to develop a refined theory of g_{n}^{r} on an algebraic curve. The refinement depends critically on relacing the notion of a point with a branch. This allows us to construct a theory of diviso…
In this note we introduce a Waldschmidt decomposition of divisors which might be viewed as a generalization of Zariski decomposition based on the effectivity rather than the nefness of divisors. As an immediate application we prove a recursive formula providing new effective lower bounds on Waldschmidt constants of very general points in projective spaces. We use these bounds in order to verify Demailly's conjecture in a number of new cases.
For a projective variety X, a line bundle L on X and r a natural number we consider the r-th Brill-Noether locus W^r(L,X):={η\in Pic^0(X)|h^0(L+η)\geq r+1}: we describe its natural scheme structure and compute the Zariski tangent space. If X is a smooth surface of maximal Albanese dimension and C is a curve on X, we define a Brill-Noether number ρ(C, r) and we prove, under some mild additional assumptions, that if ρ(C, r) is non negative then W^r(C,X) is nonempty of dimension bigger or equal to ρ(C,r). As an application, we derive lower bounds for h^0(K_D) for a divisor D that moves linearly o…
We continue with our study of the arithmetic geometry of toric varieties. In this text, we study the positivity properties of metrized R-divisors in the toric setting. For a toric metrized R-divisor, we give formulae for its arithmetic volume and its chi-arithmetic volume, and we characterize when it is arithmetically ample, nef, big or pseudo-effective, in terms of combinatorial data. As an application, we prove a Dirichlet's unit theorem on toric varieties, we give a characterization for the existence of a Zariski decomposition of a toric metrized R-divisor, and we prove a toric arithmetic F…
A 'prehomogeneous vector space' is a rational representation $ρ:G\to\mathrm{GL}(V)$ of a connected complex linear algebraic group $G$ that has a Zariski open orbit $Ω\subset V$. Mikio Sato showed that the hypersurface components of $D:=V\setminus Ω$ are related to the rational characters $H\to\mathrm{GL}(\mathbb{C})$ of $H$, an algebraic abelian quotient of $G$. Mimicking this work, we investigate the 'additive functions' of $H$, the homomorphisms $Φ:H\to (\mathbb{C},+)$. Each such $Φ$ is related to an 'additive relative invariant', a rational function $h$ on $V$ such that $h\circ ρ(g)-h=Φ(g)$…
We show that minimal models of $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial NQC log canonical generalised pairs exist, assuming the existence of minimal models of smooth varieties. More generally, we prove that on a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial NQC log canonical generalised pair $ (X,B+M) $ we can run an MMP with scaling of an ample divisor which terminates, assuming that it admits an NQC weak Zariski decomposition or that $K_X+B+M$ is not pseudoeffective. As a consequence, we establish several existence results for minimal models and Mori fibre spaces.
Given a curve $C$ and a linear system $\ell$ on $C$, the secant locus $V_e^{e-f}( \ell )$ parametrises effective divisors of degree $e$ which impose at most $e-f$ conditions on $\ell$. For $E \to C$ a vector bundle of rank $r$, we define determinantal subschemes $H_e^{e-f} ( \ell ) \subseteq \mathrm{Hilb}^e ( \mathbb{P} E )$ and $Q_e^{e-f} (V) \subseteq \mathrm{Quot}^{0, e} ( E^* )$ which generalise $V_e^{e-f} ( \ell )$, giving several examples. We describe the Zariski tangent spaces of $Q_e^{e-f} (V)$, and give examples showing that smoothness of $Q_e^{e-f} (V)$ is not necessarily controlled …
The following divisors in the space Sym^{12} P^1 of twelve points on P^1 are actually the same: (A) the possible locus of the twelve nodal fibers in a rational elliptic fibration (i.e. a pencil of plane cubic curves); (B) degree 12 binary forms that can be expressed as a cube plus a square; (C) the locus of the twelve tangents to a smooth plane quartic from a general point of the plane; (D) the branch locus of a degree 4 map from a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve to P^1; (E) the branch locus of a degree 3 map from a genus 4 curve to P^1 induced by a theta-characteristic; and several more. The corr…
