We develop a theory for the nonlinear time domain response of a Weyl semimetal driven by an ultrafast optical pulse. At quadratic order in the driving field we find that the response near a band inversion transition contains a coherent oscillating component proportional field intensity and with a frequency that can be tuned over a wide range (from THz to the near IR) selected by the chemical potential. We illustrate the effect by calculating the induced current as a function of time for a model of a parity broken Weyl semimetal where large Berry curvature near the band inversion transition promotes this nonlinear response.
We show that in superlattices with a strong band inversion no hybridization gap exists. There are two points where the bands are crossing and the spectrum has a shape of Dirac cones. Due to the absence of the hybridization gap the optical absorption does not have a threshold and goes to zero gradually with the decrease of optical energy.
Based on first principles calculations, we predicate that Bi on a graphene derivate, $g$-C$_{14}$N$_3$, which involves a $3\times 3$ unit cell of graphene with four C atoms substituted by three N atoms, is a topological insulator with a gap of 50~meV. With the help of maximally localized Wannier functions, we find that the band inversion gap can be determined by examining a pair of interaction parameters between the two involved bands. Accordingly, a phase diagram for band inversion of topological materials as a function of the interactions is obtained. The conclusion also holds for Sb, Ir and…
We perform the scanning tunneling spectroscopy based superconductor-vacuum-superconductor analogue to the seminal McMillan and Rowell superconductor-insulator-superconductor device study of phonons in the archetypal elemental superconductor Pb [W. L. McMillan and J. M. Rowell, Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 108 (1965)]. We invert this spectroscopic data utilizing strong-coupling Eliashberg theory to obtain a local α^2F(ω) and find broad underlying agreement with the pioneering results, highlighted by previously unobserved electron-hole asymmetries and new fine structure which we discuss in terms of both…
We have developed an 8-band Effective Mass Approximation model that describes the zero field spin splitting in the band structure of zincblende heterostructures due to bulk inversion asymmetry (BIA). We have verified that our finite difference Hamiltonian transforms in almost all situations according to the true $D_{2d}$ or $C_{2v}$ symmetry of [001] heterostructures. This makes it a computationally efficient tool for the accurate description of the band structure of heterostructures for spintronics. We first compute the band structure for an AlSb/GaSb/AlSb quantum well (QW), which presents on…
We propose a straightforward and effective approach for quantifying the band inversion induced by spin-orbit coupling in band insulators. In this approach we define a quantity as a function of wavevector in the Brillouin zone measuring the spillage between the occupied states of a system with and without SOC. Plots of the spillage throughout the BZ provide a ready indication of the number and location of band inversions driven by SOC. To illustrate the method, we apply this approach to the 2D Kane-Mele model, a 2D Bi bilayer with applied Zeeman field, and to first-principles calculations of so…
Depositing Au on a graphene derivate, which involves substituting four C atoms with three N atoms in a $3\times 3$ cell graphene, we realized a topological insulator of the Kane-Mele model with a gap of 50~meV surrounding the Dirac point of graphene. In this material, we observed an anomalous band inversion (BI) protected by the symmetry with character $e$ of group C$_{\rm 3V}$. The symmetry constrains two $e$ bands with mirror-symmetry combination (MSC) and mirror-antisymmetry combination (MAC) of Au and N orbitals degenerate at $Γ$, whereas the interaction of $π^*$ of graphene on the $e$-MAC…
Type-II Weyl fermion nodes, located at the touching points between electron and hole pockets, have been recently predicted to occur in distorted octahedral ($T'$) transition metal dichalcogenide semimetals, contingent upon the condition that the layered crystal has the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic ($T'_{or}$) stacking. Here, we report on the emergence of two shear Raman bands activated by inversion symmetry breaking in $T'$-MoTe$_2$ due to sample cooling. Polarization and crystal orientation resolved measurements further point to a phase transition from the monoclinic ($T'_{mo}$) structure …
The band inversion has led to rich physical effects in both topological insulators and topological semimetals. It has been found that the inverted band structure with the Mexican-hat dispersion could enhance the interband correlation leading to a strong intrinsic plasmon excitation. Its frequency ranges from several $\mathrm{meV}$ to tens of $\mathrm{meV}$ and can be effectively tuned by the external fields. The electron-hole asymmetric term splits the peak of the plasmon excitation into double peaks. The fate and properties of this plasmon excitation can also act as a probe to characterize th…
We characterize non-Hermitian band structures by symmetry indicator topological invariants. Enabled by crystalline inversion symmetry, these indicators allow us to short-cut the calculation of conventional non-Hermitian topological invariants. In particular, we express the three-dimensional winding number of point-gapped non-Hermitian systems, which is defined as an integral over the whole Brillouin zone, in terms of symmetry eigenvalues at high-symmetry momenta. Furthermore, for time-reversal symmetric non-Hermitian topological insulators, we find that symmetry indicators characterize the ass…
We have found out that the band inversion in a silicene quantum dot (QD), in perpendicular magnetic $B$ and electric $Δ_z$ fields, drastically depends on the strength of the magnetic field. We study the energy spectrum of the silicene QD where the electric field provides a tunable band gap $Δ$. Boundary conditions introduce chirality, so that negative and positive angular momentum $m$ zero Landau level (ZLL) edge states show a quite different behavior regarding the band-inversion mechanism underlying the topological insulator transition. We show that, whereas some ZLLs suffer band inversion at…
Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator with large gap is highly desirable for potential spintronics application. Here we realize electrically tunable QSH insulator with large gap in van der Waals heterobilayer of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) and hexagonal BAs. When the type II band alignment gets inverted in an electric field, the hybridization by interlayer hopping between the spin-valley locked valence band edges in TMD and the BAs conduction band edges leads to a stacking-configuration dependent topological band inversion. In the non-interacting limit, the double spin degenera…
The use of relative twist angle between adjacent atomic layers in a van der Waals heterostructure, has emerged as a new degree of freedom to tune electronic and optoelectronic properties of devices based on 2D materials. Using ABA-stacked trilayer (TLG) graphene as the model system, we show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the band structures of 2D materials are systematically tunable depending on their relative alignment angle between hexagonal BN (hBN), even at very large twist angles. Moreover, addition or removal of the hBN substrate results in an inversion of the K and K' valley in …
Recent realizations of exotic topological states in condensed matter and cold atoms have advanced the exploration for topological characteristics, such as invariant topological orders and band inversion. Here we construct a 1D optical diatomic system made of split ring resonators with electric-magnetic couplings to implement the topological features. We experimentally measure the dispersion relationship and sub-lattice pseudo-spin vectors by detecting field strength distributions, which determines the accompanying winding number of bulk band as the topological order. The sub-lattice pseudo-spi…
Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations were studied under high magnetic field in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ nanostructures grown by Chemical Vapor Transport, for different bulk carrier densities ranging from $3\times10^{19}\text{cm}^{-3}$ to $6\times10^{17}\text{cm}^{-3}$. The contribution of topological surface states to electrical transport can be identified and separated from bulk carriers and massive two-dimensional electron gas. Band bending is investigated, and a crossover from upward to downward band bending is found at low bulk density, as a result of a competition between bulk and interface doping. These r…

We study a special class of topological phase transitions in two dimensions described by the inversion of bands with relative angular momentum higher than 1. A band inversion of this kind, which is protected by rotation symmetry, separates the trivial insulator from a Chern insulating phase with higher Chern number, and thus generalizes the quantum Hall transition described by a Dirac fermion. Higher angular momentum band inversions are of special interest, as the non-vanishing density of states at the transition can give rise to interesting many-body effects. Here we introduce a series of min…
Non-Hermitian skin effects and exceptional points are topological phenomena characterized by integer winding numbers. In this study, we give methods to theoretically detect skin effects and exceptional points by generalizing inversion symmetry. The generalization of inversion symmetry is unique to non-Hermitian systems. We show that parities of the winding numbers can be determined from energy eigenvalues on the inversion-invariant momenta when generalized inversion symmetry is present. The simple expressions for the winding numbers allow us to easily analyze skin effects and exceptional point…
We investigate the 3.45-eV luminescence band of spontaneously formed GaN nanowires on Si(111) by photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. This band is found to be particularly prominent for samples synthesized at comparatively low temperatures. At the same time, these samples exhibit a peculiar morphology, namely, isolated long nanowires are interspersed within a dense matrix of short ones. Cathodoluminescence intensity maps reveal the 3.45-eV band to originate primarily from the long nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy shows that these long nanowires are either Ga polar…
In a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) the inversion of the bulk valence and conduction bands is a necessary condition to observe surface metallic states. Solid solutions of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te have been shown to be TCI, where band inversion occurs as a result of the band gap evolution upon alloying with Sn. The origins of this band inversion remain unclear. Herein the role of Sn insertion into the PbTe matrix is investigated for the $p$-type Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te series with $x$ = 0, 0.35, 0.60, and 1.00 via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transport measurements. $^{207}$Pb, $^{119}$Sn…
A topological boundary can be formed at the interface between a trivial and a topological insulator. The difference in the topological index across the junction leads to robust gapless surface states. Optical studies of these states are scarce in the literature, the reason being the difficulty to isolate their response from that of the bulk. In this work, we propose to deposit a $δ$ layer of donor impurities in close proximity to a topological boundary to help detecting gapless surface states. As we will show, gapless surface states are robust against this perturbation and they enhance intraba…
In commonly employed models for 2D topological insulators, bulk gapless states are well known to form at the band inversion points where the degeneracy of the states is protected by symmetries. It is thus sometimes quite tempting to consider this feature, the occurrence of gapless states, a result of the band inversion process under protection of the symmetries. Similarly, the band inversion process might even be perceived as necessary to induce 2D topological phase transitions. To clarify these misleading perspectives, we propose a simple model with a flexible Chern number to demonstrate that…
Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) are systems with topologically protected in-gap boundary states localized at their $(d-n)$-dimensional boundaries, with $d$ the system dimension and $n$ the order of the topology. This work proposes a rather universal dynamics-based characterization of one large class of $Z$-type HOTIs without specifically relying on any symmetry considerations. The key element of our innovative approach is to connect quantum quench dynamics with nested configurations of the so-called band inversion surfaces (BISs) of momentum-space Hamiltonians as a sum of operators…
Black phosphorous (BP) is a layered semiconductor with high carrier mobility, anisotropic optical response and wide bandgap tunability. In view of its application in optoelectronic devices, understanding transient photo-induced effects is crucial. Here, we investigate by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy BP in its pristine state and in the presence of Stark splitting, chemically induced by Cs ad-sorption. We show that photo-injected carriers trigger bandgap renormalization and a concurrent valence band attening caused by Pauli blocking. In the biased sample, photoexcitation l…
We prove the existence of higher-order topological insulators in: {\it i}) fourfold rotoinversion invariant bulk crystals, and {\it ii}) inversion-symmetric systems with or without an additional three-fold rotation symmetry. These states of matter are characterized by a non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant, which we define in terms of symmetric hybrid Wannier functions of the filled bands, and can be readily calculated from the knowledge of the crystalline symmetry labels of the bulk band structure. The topological invariant determines the generic presence or absence of protected c…
We experimentally investigate transport through the side junction between a niobium superconductor and the mesa edge of a two-dimensional system, realized in an InAs/GaSb double quantum well with band inversion. We demonstrate, that different transport regimes can be achieved by variation of the mesa step. We observe anomalous behavior of Andreev reflection within a finite low-bias interval, which is invariant for both transport regimes. We connect this behavior with the transition from retro- (at low biases) to specular (at high ones) Andreev reflection channels in an InAs/GaSb double quantum…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of LaSb and CeSb, a candidate of topological insulator. Using soft-x-ray photons, we have accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and revealed that the band inversion at the Brillouin-zone corner - a prerequisite for realizing topological-insulator phase - is absent in both LaSb and CeSb. Moreover, unlike the ARPES data obtained with soft-x-ray photons, those with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons were found to suffer significant $k_z$ broadening. These results suggest that LaSb and CeSb are topologicall…
A band gap for electronic states in crystals governs various properties of solids, such as transport, optical and magnetic properties. Its estimation and control have been an important issue in solid state physics. The band gap can be controlled externally by various parameters, such as pressure, atomic compositions and external field. Sometimes, the gap even collapses by tuning some parameter. In the field of topological insulators, such closing of the gap at a time-reversal invariant momentum indicates a band inversion, i.e. it leads to a topological phase transition from a normal insulator …
Whereas the concept of topological band-structures was developed originally for insulators with a bulk bandgap, it has become increasingly clear that the prime consequences of a non-trivial topology -- spin-momentum locking of surface states -- can also be encountered in gapless systems. Concentrating on the paradigmatic example of mercury chalcogenides HgX (X = Te, Se, S), we show that the existence of helical semimetals, i.e. semimetals with topological surface states, critically depends on the presence of crystal inversion symmetry. An infinitesimally small broken inversion symmetry (BIS) r…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on EuIn2As2 which is predicted to be an axion insulator in the antiferromagnetic state. By utilizing soft-x-ray and vacuum-ultraviolet photons, we revealed a three-dimensional hole pocket centered at the Gamma point of bulk Brillouin zone together with a heavily hole-doped surface state in the paramagnetic phase. Upon entering the antiferromagnetic phase, the band structure exhibits a marked reconstruction characterized by the emergence of a "M"-shaped bulk band near the Fermi level. The qualitative agreement with first-principles ban…
We theoretically demonstrate how competition between band inversion and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) results in nontrivial evolution of band topology, taking antiperovskite Ba$_3$SnO as a prototype material. A key observation is that when the band inversion dominates over SOC, there appear "twin" Dirac cones in the band structure. Due to the twin Dirac cones, the band shows highly peculiar structure in which the upper cone of one of the twin continuously transforms to the lower cone of the other. Interestingly, the relative size of the band inversion and SOC is controlled in this series of antipe…
Band inversions are key to stabilising a variety of novel electronic states in solids, from topological surface states in inverted bulk band gaps of topological insulators to the formation of symmetry-protected three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl points and nodal-line semimetals. Here, we create a band inversion not of bulk states, but rather between manifolds of surface states. We realise this by aliovalent substitution of Nb for Zr and Sb for S in the ZrSiS family of nonsymmorphic semimetals. Using angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory, we show how two pairs of surface stat…
Several IV-VI semiconductor compounds made of heavy atoms, such as Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te, may undergo band-inversion at the $L$ point of the Brillouin zone upon variation of their chemical composition. This inversion gives rise to topologically distinct phases, characterized by a change in a topological invariant. In the framework of the $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theory, band-inversion can be viewed as a change of sign of the fundamental gap. A two-band model within the envelope-function approximation predicts the appearance of midgap interface states with Dirac cone dispersions in band-inver…
Two-dimensional ($2$D) semi-Dirac systems, such as $2$D black phosphorus and arsenene, can exhibit a rich topological phase transition between insulating, semi-Dirac, and band inversion phases when subjected to an external modulation. How these phase transitions manifest within the quantum transport and shot noise signatures remain an open question thus far. Here, we show that the Fano factor converges to the universal $F\approx0.179$ at the semi-Dirac phase, and transits between the sub-Poissonian ($F\approx1/3$) and the Poissonian shot noise ($F\approx1$) limit at the band inversion and the …
Three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) represent novel states of quantum matters in which surface states are protected by time-reversal symmetry and an inversion occurs between bulk conduction- and valence-bands. However, the bulk-band inversion which is intimately tied to the topologically nontrivial nature of 3D TIs has rarely been investigated by experiments. Besides, 3D massive Dirac fermions with nearly near band dispersions were seldom observed in TIs. Recently, a van der Waals crystal, ZrTe5, was theoretically predicted to be a TI. Here, we report an infrared transmission stu…
We have experimentally realized novel space-time inversion (P-T) invariant Z2-type topological semimetal-bands, via an analogy between the momentum space and a controllable parameter space in superconducting quantum circuits. By measuring the whole energy spectrum of system, we imaged clearly an exotic tunable gapless band structure of topological semimetals. Two topological quantum phase transitions from a topological semimetal to two kinds of insulators can be manipulated by continuously tuning the different parameters in the experimental setup, one of which captures the Z2 topology of the P…
Nodal superconductors without inversion symmetry exhibit nontrivial topological properties, manifested by topologically protected flat-band edge states. Here we study the effects of breaking translational symmetry, crucial to the definition of the topological invariant. We show using large-scale numerical simulations that bulk-edge correspondence remains valid in the presence of edge roughness and strong edge disorder. Moderately strong nonmagnetic disorder shifts some of the edge states away from zero energy, but does not change their total number. Strong spin-independent edge disorder, on th…

We study translationally-invariant insulators with inversion symmetry that fall outside the established classification of topological insulators. These insulators are not required to have gapless boundary modes in the energy spectrum. However, they do exhibit protected modes in the entanglement spectrum localized on the cut between two entangled regions. Their entanglement entropy cannot be made to vanish adiabatically, and hence the insulators can be called topological. There is a direct connection between the inversion eigenvalues of the band structure and the mid-gap states in the entanglem…
We construct a general theory of $Z_2$ topological phase transitions in two-dimensional systems with time-reversal symmetry. We investigate the possibilities of $Z_2$ topological phase transitions at band inversions at all high-symmetry points in $k$-space in all the 80 layer groups. We exclude the layer groups with inversion symmetry because the $Z_2$ topological phase transition is known to be associated with band inversions with an exchange of parities. Among the other layer groups, we find 21 layer groups with insulator-to-insulator transitions with band inversion, and this problem is fina…
Optical and Hall-effect measurements have been performed on single crystals of Pb$_{0.77}$Sn$_{0.23}$Se, a IV-VI mixed chalcogenide. The temperature dependent (10--300 K) reflectance was measured over 40--7000 cm$^{-1}$ (5--870 meV) with an extension to 15,500 cm$^{-1}$ (1.92 eV) at room temperature. The reflectance was fit to the Drude-Lorentz model using a single Drude component and several Lorentz oscillators. The optical properties at the measured temperatures were estimated via Kramers-Kronig analysis as well as by the Drude-Lorentz fit. The carriers were p-type with the carrier density d…
We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of a ternary phase change material, namely Ge2Sb2Te5, epitaxially grown on Si(111) in the metastable cubic phase. The observed upper bulk valence band shows a minimum at Gamma-bar being 0.3 eV below the Fermi level E_F and a circular Fermi contour around Gamma-bar with a dispersing diameter of 0.27-0.36 Anstroms^-1. This is in agreement with density functional theory calculations of the Petrov stacking sequence in the cubic phase which exhibits a topological surface state. The topologically trivial cubic KH stacking shows a valence band maximum …
Here we report on Landau level spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 34 T performed on a thin film of topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ epitaxially grown on a BaF$_2$ substrate. The observed response is consistent with the picture of a direct-gap semiconductor in which charge carriers closely resemble massive Dirac particles. The fundamental band gap reaches $E_g=(175\pm 5)$~meV at low temperatures and it is not located on the trigonal axis, thus displaying either six or twelvefold valley degeneracy. Notably, our magneto-optical data do not indicate any band inversion. This suggests that the …
Methods to generate spin-polarised electronic states in non-magnetic solids are strongly desired to enable all-electrical manipulation of electron spins for new quantum devices. This is generally accepted to require breaking global structural inversion symmetry. In contrast, here we present direct evidence from spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for a strong spin polarisation of bulk states in the centrosymmetric transition-metal dichalcogenide WSe$_2$. We show how this arises due to a lack of inversion symmetry in constituent structural units of the bulk crystal where the ele…
Higher-order topological phases (HOTPs) hold gapped bulk bands and topological boundary states localized in boundaries with codimension higher than one. In this paper, we provide a unified construction and topological characterization of HOTPs for the full Altland-Zirnbauer tenfold symmetry classes, based on a method known as nested band inversion surfaces (BISs). Specifically, HOTPs built on this method are decomposed into a series of subsystems, and higher-order topological boundary states emerges from the interplay of their first-order topology. Our analysis begins with a general discussion…
We examine different topological phases in three-dimensional non-centrosymmetric superconductors with time-reversal symmetry by using three different types of topological invariants. Due to the bulk boundary correspondence, a non-zero value of any of these topological numbers indicates the appearance of zero-energy Andreev surface states. We find that some of these boundary modes in nodal superconducting phases are dispersionless, i.e., they form a topologically protected flat band. The region where the zero-energy flat band appears in the surface Brillouin zone is determined by the projection…
For materials near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators (TIs), their band topology depends on the band alignment, with the inverted (normal) band corresponding to the strong (weak) TI phase. Here, taking the anisotropic transition-metal pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$ as an example, we show that the band inversion manifests itself as a second extremum (band gap) in the layer stacking direction, which can be probed experimentally via magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Specifically, we find that the band anisotropy of ZrTe$_5$ features a slow dispersion in the layer stacking dir…
Moiré materials have become one of the most active fields in material science in recent years due to their high tunability, and their unique properties emerge from the Moiré-scale structure modulation. Here, we propose twisted bilayer Bi$_2$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_3$ as a new Moiré material where the Moiré-scale modulation induces a topological phase transition. We show, in twisted bilayer Bi$_2$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_3$, a topological insulator domain and a normal insulator domain coexist in the Moiré lattice structure, and edge states on the domain boundary make nearly flat bands that dominate the …
Zak phase, which refers to the Berry's phase picked up by a particle moving across the Brillouin zone, characterizes the topological properties of Bloch bands in one-dimensional periodic system. Here the Zak phase in dimerized one-dimensional locally resonant metamaterials is investigated. It is found that there are some singular points in the bulk band across which the Bloch states contribute π to the Zak phase, whereas while in the rest of the band the contribution is nearly zero. These singular points associated with zero reflection are caused by two different mechanisms: the dimerization-i…
By examining organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 which is described by a nearest neighbors tight-binding model it is shown that because of inversion symmetry, each component of a wave function (WF) exhibits nodal lines (NLs) in the Brillouin zone. In the absence of any band crossing, each NL connects two time reversal invariant momenta (TRIM) as partners. In the presence of a pair of Dirac points (band crossing), for each band that crosses and for each WF component there is a NL that connects the pair of Dirac points via a TRIM without partner. This second kind of NL leads to a discontinuo…
We show that the Wannier obstruction and the fragile topology of the nearly flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene at magic angle are manifestations of the nontrivial topology of two-dimensional real wave functions characterized by the Euler class. To prove this, we examine the generic band topology of two dimensional real fermions in systems with space-time inversion $I_{ST}$ symmetry. The Euler class is an integer topological invariant classifying real two band systems. We show that a two-band system with a nonzero Euler class cannot have an $I_{ST}$-symmetric Wannier representation. Moreove…
Macroscopic two-dimensional sonic crystals with inversion symmetry are studied to reveal higher-order topological physics in classical wave systems. By tuning a single geometry parameter, the band topology of the bulk and the edges can be controlled simultaneously. The bulk band gap forms an acoustic analog of topological crystalline insulators with edge states which are gapped due to symmetry reduction on the edges. In the presence of mirror symmetry, the band topology of the edge states can be characterized by the Zak phase, illustrating the band topology in a hierarchy of dimensions, which …
We establish the angle-resolved thermal emission spectroscopy (ARTES) as a new platform to characterize the intrinsic eigenmode properties of non-Hermitian systems. This method can directly map the dispersion of meta-crystals within the light cone with a high angular resolution. To illustrate its usefulness, we demonstrate the existence of bound states in the continuum (BICs) and non-Hermitian Fermi arcs in a planar corrugated meta-crystal by measuring its angle-resolved thermal emission spectra. We show that change in the thickness of the meta-crystal can induce a band inversion between a BIC…
We study the phase diagram of a model quantum spin Hall system as a function of band inversion and band-coupling strength, demonstrating that when band hybridization is weak, an interaction-induced nematic insulator state emerges over a wide range of band inversion. This property is a consequence of the long-range Coulomb interaction, which favors interband phase coherence that is weakly dependent on momentum and therefore frustrated by the single-particle Hamiltonian at the band inversion point. For weak band hybridization, interactions convert the continuous gap closing topological phase tra…
