We use purely topological tools to construct several infinite families of hyperbolic links in the 3-sphere that satisfy the Turaev-Viro invariant volume conjecture posed by Chen and Yang. To show that our links satisfy the volume conjecture, we prove that each has complement homeomorphic to the complement of a fundamental shadow link. These are links in connected sums of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$ for which the conjecture is known due to Belletti, Detcherry, Kalfagianni, and Yang. Our methods also verify the conjecture for several hyperbolic links with crossing number less than twelve. In addition, we show that every link in the $3$-sphere is a sublink of a link that satisfies the conjecture. As an application of our results, we extend the class of known examples that satisfy the AMU conjecture on quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. For example, we give explicit elements in the mapping class group of a genus $g$ surface with four boundary components for any $g$. For this, we use techniques developed by Detcherry and Kalfagianni which relate the Turaev-Viro invariant volume conjecture to the AMU conjecture.
We introduce an associative algebra Z[X,S] associated to a birack shadow and define enhancements of the birack counting invariant for classical knots and links via representations of Z[X,S] known as shadow modules. We provide examples which demonstrate that the shadow module enhanced invariants are not determined by the Alexander polynomial or the unenhanced birack counting invariants.
We introduce an algebra Z[X,S] associated to a pair (X,S) of a virtual birack X and X-shadow S. We use modules over Z[X,S] to define enhancements of the virtual birack shadow counting invariant, extending the birack shadow module invariants to virtual case. We repeat this construction for the twisted virtual case. As applications, we show that the new invariants can detect orientation reversal and are not determined by the knot group, the Arrow polynomial and the Miyazawa polynomial, and that the twisted version is not determined by the twisted Jones polynomial.
In 1993, Fenn, Rourke and Sanderson introduced rack spaces and rack homotopy invariants, and modifications to quandle spaces and quandle homotopy invariants were introduced by Nosaka in 2011. In this paper, we define the Cayley-type graph and the extended quandle space of a quandle in analogy to rack and quandle spaces. Moreover, we construct the shadow homotopy invariant of a classical link and prove that the shadow homotopy invariant is equal to the quandle homotopy invariant multiplied by the order of a quandle.
We study the asymptotic expansion conjecture of the relative Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants proposed in \cite{WY4} for all pairs $(M,L)$ satisfying the property that $M\setminus L$ is homeomorphic to some fundamental shadow link complement. The hyperbolic cone structure of such $(M,L)$ can be described by using the logarithmic holonomies of the meridians of some fundamental shadow link. We show that when the logarithmic holonomies are sufficiently small and all cone angles are less than $π$, the asymptotic expansion conjecture of $(M,L)$ is true. Especially, we verify the asymptotic expansion c…
We introduce a topological combinatorial game called the Link Smoothing Game. The game is played on the shadow of a link diagram and legal moves consist of smoothing precrossings. One player's goal is to keep the diagram connected while the other player's goal is to disconnect the shadow. We make significant progress towards a complete classification of link shadows into outcome classes by capitalizing on the relationship between link shadows and the planar graphs associated to their checkerboard colorings.
K. Cho and S. Nelson introduced the notion of a quandle coloring quiver, which is a quiver-valued link invariant, and a quandle cocycle quiver which is an enhancement of the quandle coloring quiver by assigning to each vertex a weight computed using a quandle 2-cocycle. In this paper, we study quandle coloring quivers using dihedral quandles and introduce the notions of a shadow quandle coloring quiver and a shadow quandle cocycle quiver, which are shadow versions of the quandle coloring quiver and the quandle cocycle quiver. We show that, when we use a dihedral quandle of prime order, the qua…
Eisermann has shown that the Jones polynomial of a $n$-component ribbon link $L\subset S^3$ is divided by the Jones polynomial of the trivial $n$-component link. We improve this theorem by extending its range of application from links in $S^3$ to colored knotted trivalent graphs in $\#_g(S^2\times S^1)$, the connected sum of $g\geqslant 0$ copies of $S^2\times S^1$. We show in particular that if the Kauffman bracket of a knot in $\#_g(S^2\times S^1)$ has a pole in $q=i$ of order $n$, the ribbon genus of the knot is at least $\frac {n+1}2$. We construct some families of knots in $\#_g(S^2\times…
We construct elements of the third quandle homology groups of knot quandles, which are called the shadow fundamental classes. They play the same roles for the shadow quandle cocycle invariants of knots as the fundamental classes of knot quandles does for the quandle cocycle invariants. As an application of the shadow fundamental classes, we show the relation between the shadow quandle cocycle invariants and the based shadow quandle cocycle invariants. Moreover, we will show, for a prime knot, that any third quandle homology classes are considered as images of the shadow fundamental classes of …
Turaev's shadow can be seen locally as the Stein factorization of a stable map. In this paper, we define the notion of stable map complexity for a compact orientable 3-manifold bounded by (possibly empty) tori counting, with some weights, the minimal number of singular fibers of codimension 2 of stable maps into the real plane, and prove that this number equals the minimal number of vertices of its branched shadows. In consequence, we give a complete characterization of hyperbolic links in the 3-sphere whose exteriors have stable map complexity 1 in terms of Dehn surgeries, and also give an ob…
We propose the Volume Conjecture for the relative Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of a closed oriented $3$-manifold with a colored framed link inside it whose asymptotic behavior is related to the volume and the Chern-Simons invariant of the hyperbolic cone metric on the manifold with singular locus the link and cone angles determined by the coloring. We prove the conjecture in the case that the ambient $3$-manifold is obtained by doing an integral surgery along some components of a fundamental shadow link and the complement of the link in the ambient manifold is homeomorphic to the fundamental …
A shadowed polyhedron is a simple polyhedron equipped with half integers on regions, called gleams, which represents a compact, oriented, smooth 4-manifold. The polyhedron is embedded in the 4-manifold and it is called a shadow of that manifold. A subpolyhedron of a shadow represents a possibly singular subsurface in the 4-manifold. In this paper, we focus on contractible shadows obtained from the unit disk by attaching annuli along generically immersed closed curves on the disk. In this case, the 4-manifold is always a 4-ball. Milnor fibers of plane curve singularities and complexified real l…
We extend the definition of the colored Jones polynomials to framed links and trivalent graphs in S^3 # k S^2 X S^1 using a state-sum formulation based on Turaev's shadows. Then, we prove that the natural extension of the Volume Conjecture is true for an infinite family of hyperbolic links.
We compute the asymptotical growth rate of a large family of $U_q(sl_2)$ $6j$-symbols and we interpret our results in geometric terms by relating them to volumes of hyperbolic truncated tetrahedra. We address a question which is strictly related with S.Gukov's generalized volume conjecture and deals with the case of hyperbolic links in connected sums of $S^2\times S^1$. We answer this question for the infinite family of fundamental shadow links.
In the present article we determine and characterize completely the support genus, the binding number and the norm of a page of an open book under the following restrictions: M is a rational homology sphere which can be realized as the link of a surface singularity. Moreover, we restrict ourselves to the collection of those open book decompositions which can be realized as Milnor fibrations determined by some analytic germ (the so-called Milnor open books).
We explain how, starting with a stack of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane in type IIA string theory, one can, via T-duality and the topological-holomorphic nature of the relevant worldvolume theories, relate (i) the lattice models realized by Costello's 4d Chern-Simons theory, (ii) links in 3d analytically-continued Chern-Simons theory, (iii) the quantum geometric Langlands correspondence realized by Kapustin-Witten using 4d N = 4 gauge theory and its quantum group modification, and (iv) the Gaitsgory-Lurie conjecture relating quantum groups/affine Kac-Moody algebras to Whittaker D-modules/W-a…
We realize a given (monic) Alexander polynomial by a (fibered) hyperbolic arborescent knot and link of any number of components, and by infinitely many such links of at least 4 components. As a consequence, a Mahler measure minimizing polynomial, if it exists, is realized as the Alexander polynomial of a fibered hyperbolic link of at least 2 components. For given polynomial, we give also an upper bound on the minimal hyperbolic volume of knots/links, and contrarily, construct knots of arbitrarily large volume, which are arborescent, or have given free genus at least 2.
We show that a link in an open book can be realized as a strongly quasipositive braid if and only if it bounds a Legendrian ribbon with respect to the associated contact structure. This generalizes a result due to Baader and Ishikawa for links in the three-sphere. We highlight some related techniques for determining whether or not a link is strongly quasipositive, emphasizing applications to fibered links and satellites.
We show that the ungraded ruling invariants of a Legendrian link can be realized as certain coefficients of the Kauffman polynomial which are non-vanishing if and only if the upper bound for the Bennequin number given by the Kauffman polynomial is sharp. This resolves positively a conjecture of Fuchs. Using similar methods a result involving the upper bound given by the HOMFLY polynomial and 2-graded rulings is proved.
We investigate several topological and combinatorial properties of line arrangements. We associate to a line arrangement a link obtained by intersecting the arrangement with some sphere. Several topics are discussed: (a) some link configurations can be realized by complex line arrangements but not by real line arrangements; (b) if we intersect the arrangements with a vertical band instead of a sphere, what link configurations can be obtained? (c) relations between link configurations obtained by bands and spheres.
By use of a variety of techniques (most based on constructions of quasipositive knots and links, some old and others new), many smooth 3-manifolds are realized as transverse intersections of complex surfaces in complex 3-space with strictly pseudoconvex 5-spheres. These manifolds not only inherit interesting intrinsic structures (eg, they have canonical Stein-fillable contact structures), they also have extrinsic structures of a knot-theoretical nature (eq, the 3-sphere arises in infinitely many distinct ways). This survey is not comprehensive; a number of questions are left open for future wo…
