We consider a general class of scalar tensor theories in three dimensions whose action contains up to second-order derivatives of the scalar field with coupling functions that only depend on the standard kinetic term of the scalar field, thus ensuring the invariance under the constant shift of the scalar field. For this model, we show that the field equations for a stationary metric ansatz together with a purely radial scalar field can be fully integrated. The kinetic term of the scalar field solution is shown to satisfy an algebraic relation depending only on the coupling functions, and hence is constant while the metric solution is nothing but the BTZ metric with an effective cosmological constant fixed in terms of the coupling functions. As a direct consequence the thermodynamics of the solution is shown to be identical to the BTZ one with an effective cosmological constant, despite the presence of a scalar field. Finally, the expression of the semi-classical entropy of this solution is also confirmed through a generalized Cardy-like formula involving the mass of the scalar soliton obtained from the black hole by means of a double Wick rotation.
We employ a recently developed mode-sum regularization method to compute the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field in the Kerr background metric (describing a stationary spinning black hole). More specifically, we consider a minimally-coupled massless scalar field in the Unruh vacuum state, the quantum state corresponding to an evaporating black hole. The computation is done here for the case $a=0.7M$, using two different variants of the method: $t$-splitting and $φ$-splitting, yielding good agreement between the two (in the domain where both are applicable). We briefly discuss …
Comments on the hidden symmetries of the spinning point particle in Kerr-Newman, D = 5 minimal gauged supergravity and higher dimensional spacetimes with Killing-Yano torsion
The open question of whether a black hole can become tidally deformed by an external gravitational field has profound implications for fundamental physics, astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. Love tensors characterize the tidal deformability of compact objects such as astrophysical (Kerr) black holes under an external static tidal field. We prove that all Love tensors vanish identically for a Kerr black hole in the nonspinning limit or for an axisymmetric tidal perturbation. In contrast to this result, we show that Love tensors are generically nonzero for a spinning black hole. Spec…
In this work we have investigated various properties of a spinning gyroscope in the context of Horndeski theories. In particular, we have focused on two specific situations --- (a) when the gyroscope follows a geodesic trajectory and (b) when it is endowed with an acceleration. In both these cases, besides developing the basic formalism, we have also applied the same to understand the motion of a spinning gyroscope in various static and spherically symmetric spacetimes pertaining to Horndeski theories. Starting with the Schwarzschild de-Sitter spacetime as a warm up exercise, we have presented…
We study a supersymmetric, rotating, electrically charged black hole in AdS$_{4}$ which is a solution of four-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. Using holography we show that the free energy on $S^3$ and the superconformal index of the dual three-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ SCFT, in the planar limit, are related in a simple universal way. This result applies to large classes of SCFTs constructed from branes in string and M-theory which we discuss in some detail. For theories of class $\mathcal R$, which arise from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on hyperbolic three-manifolds, we show that the super…
We consider a procedure for directly constructing general tree-level four-particle scattering amplitudes of massive spinning particles that are consistent with the usual requirements of Lorentz invariance, unitarity, crossing symmetry, and locality. There are infinitely many such amplitudes, but we can isolate interesting theories by bounding the high-energy growth of the tree amplitudes within the effective field theory. This allows us to set model-independent lower bounds on the growth of tree-level amplitudes in any effective field theory with a given particle content and any interaction te…
We study out-of-time ordered four-point functions in two dimensional conformal field theories by suitably analytically continuing the Euclidean correlator. For large central charge theories with a sparse spectrum, chaotic dynamics is revealed in an exponential decay; this is seen directly in the contribution of the vacuum block to the correlation function. However, contributions from individual non-vacuum blocks with large spin and small twist dominate over the vacuum block. We argue, based on holographic intuition, that suitable summations over such intermediate states in the block decomposit…
We explore AdS/CFT correspondence between geodesic Witten diagrams and conformal blocks (conformal partial waves) with an external symmetric traceless tensor field. We derive an expression for the conformal partial wave with an external spin-1 field and show that this expression is equivalent to the amplitude of the geodesic Witten diagram. We also show the equivalence by using conformal Casimir equation in embedding formalism. Furthermore, we extend the construction of the amplitude of the geodesic Witten diagram to an external arbitrary symmetric traceless tensor field. We show our construct…
In this paper, we use the exact renormalisation in the context of tensor models and tensorial group field theories. As a byproduct, we rederive Gaussian universality for random tensors and provide a general power counting for Abelian tensorial field theories with a closure constraint, leading us to a only five renormalizable theories.
The exact solution of a system of bilinear identities derived in the first part of our work [Nucl.Phys.A 938 (2015) 59] for the case of real Grassmann-odd tensor aggregate of the type $(S,V_μ,\!\,^{\ast}T_{μν},A_μ, P)$ is obtained. The consistency of the solution with a corresponding system of bilinear identities including both the tensor variables and their derivatives $(\dot{S},\dot{V}_μ,\!\,^{\ast}\dot{T}_{μν},\dot{A}_μ,\dot{P})$ is considered. The alternative approach in solving of the algebraic system based on introducing complex tensor quantities is discussed. This solution is used in co…
We construct conformal three-point functions in momentum space with a general tensor and conserved currents of spin $1$ and $2$. While conformal correlators in momentum space have been studied especially in the connection with cosmology, correlators involving a tensor of general spin and scaling dimension have not been studied very much yet. Such a direction is unavoidable when we go beyond three-point functions because general tensors always appear as an intermediate state. In this paper, as a first step, we solve the Ward-Takahashi identities for correlators of a general tensor and conserved…
We obtain numerical solutions for rotating topological solitons of the nonlinear $σ$-model in three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space. Two types of solutions, $i)$ and $ii)$, are found. The $σ$-model fields are everywhere well defined for both types of solutions, but they differ in their space-time domains. Any time slice of the space-time for the type $i)$ solution has a causal singularity, despite the fact that all scalars constructed the curvature tensor are bounded functions. No evidence of a horizon is seen for any of the solutions, and therefore the type $i)$ solutions have naked singular…
We reconsider the issue of whether scalar-tensor theories can admit stable wormhole configurations supported by a non-trivial radial profile for the scalar field. Using a recently proposed effective theory for perturbations around static, spherically symmetric backgrounds, we show that scalar-tensor theories of "beyond Horndeski" type can have wormhole solutions that are free of ghost and gradient instabilities. Such solutions are instead forbidden within the more restrictive "Horndeski" class of theories.
