We explore AdS/CFT correspondence between geodesic Witten diagrams and conformal blocks (conformal partial waves) with an external symmetric traceless tensor field. We derive an expression for the conformal partial wave with an external spin-1 field and show that this expression is equivalent to the amplitude of the geodesic Witten diagram. We also show the equivalence by using conformal Casimir equation in embedding formalism. Furthermore, we extend the construction of the amplitude of the geodesic Witten diagram to an external arbitrary symmetric traceless tensor field. We show our construction agrees with the known result of the conformal partial waves.
We present an expression for the four-point conformal blocks of symmetric traceless operators of arbitrary spin as an integral over a pair of geodesics in Anti-de Sitter space, generalizing the geodesic Witten diagram formalism of Hijano et al [arXiv:1508.00501] to arbitrary spin. As an intermediate step in the derivation, we identify a convenient basis of bulk three-point interaction vertices which give rise to all possible boundary three point structures. We highlight a direct connection between the representation of the conformal block as a geodesic Witten diagram and the shadow operator fo…
We show the AdS/CFT correspondence between the conformal partial wave and the geodesic Witten diagram with anti-symmetric exchange. To this end, we introduce the embedding space formalism for anti-symmetric fields in AdS. Then we prove that the geodesic Witten diagram satisfies the conformal Casimir equation and the appropriate boundary condition. Furthermore, we discuss the connection between the geodesic Witten diagram and the shadow formalism by using the split representation of harmonic function for anti-symmetric fields. We also discuss the 3pt geodesic Witten diagrams and its extension t…
We develop the embedding formalism for odd dimensional Dirac spinors in AdS and apply it to the (geodesic) Witten diagrams including fermionic degrees of freedom. We first show that the geodesic Witten diagram (GWD) with fermion exchange is equivalent to the conformal partial waves associated with the spin one-half primary field. Then, we explicitly demonstrate the GWD decomposition of the Witten diagram including the fermion exchange with the aid of the split representation. The geodesic representation of CPW indeed gives the useful basis for computing the Witten diagrams.
We develop a new embedding-space formalism for AdS$_4$ and CFT$_3$ that is useful for evaluating Witten diagrams for operators with spin. The basic variables are Killing spinors for the bulk AdS$_4$ and conformal Killing spinors for the boundary CFT$_3$. The more conventional embedding space coordinates $X^I$ for the bulk and $P^I$ for the boundary are bilinears in these new variables. We write a simple compact form for the general bulk-boundary propagator, and, for boundary operators of spin $\ell \geq 1$, we determine its conservation properties at the unitarity bound. In our CFT$_3$ formali…
We develop a systematic framework to compute the conformal partial wave expansions (CPWEs) of tree-level four-point Witten diagrams with totally symmetric external fields of arbitrary mass and integer spin in AdS$_{d+1}$. Employing this framework, we determine the CPWE of a generic exchange Witten diagram with spinning exchanged field. As an intermediate step, we diagonalise the linear map between spinning three-point conformal structures and spinning cubic couplings in AdS. As a concrete application, we compute all exchange diagrams in the type A higher-spin gauge theory on AdS$_{d+1}$, which…
We extend the work of \cite{Ferrara:1971vh},\cite{Ferrara:1973vz}, to obtain an integral expression of OPE blocks for spinning primaries in CFT$_{2}$. We observe, when the OPE blocks are made out of conserved spinning primaries, the integral becomes a product of two copies of weighted AdS$_{2}$ fields, smeared along geodesics. In this way, conserved current OPE blocks in CFT$_{2}$ have a different representation in terms of AdS$_{2}$ geodesic operators, in stead of viewing them as AdS$_{3}$ geodesic operators. We also show, how this representation can be related to AdS$_{3}$ massless higher sp…
The geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in the Euclidean Taub-NUT space is analysed. The generalized Killing equations for spinning space are investigated and the constants of motion are derived in terms of the solutions of these equations. A simple exact solution, corresponding to trajectories lying on a cone, is given.
We dimensionally reduce the four-derivative corrections to the parity-conserving part of the D9-brane effective action involving all orders of the gauge field, to obtain corrections to the actions for the lower-dimensional Dp-branes. These corrections involve the second fundamental form and correspond to a non-geodesic embedding of the Dp-brane into (flat) ten-dimensional space. In addition, we study the transformation of the corrections under the Seiberg-Witten map relating the ordinary and non-commutative theories. A speculative discussion about the higher-order terms in the derivative expan…
We give a systematic procedure to evaluate conformal partial waves involving symmetric tensors for an arbitrary CFT$_d$ using geodesic Witten diagrams in AdS$_{d+1}$. Using this procedure we discuss how to draw a line between the tensor structures in the CFT and cubic interactions in AdS. We contrast this map to known results using three-point Witten diagrams: the maps obtained via volume versus geodesic integrals differ. Despite these differences, we show how to decompose four-point exchange Witten diagrams in terms of geodesic diagrams, and we discuss the product expansion of local bulk fiel…
We revisit the so-called "Geodesic Witten Diagrams" (GWDs) \cite{ScalarGWD}, proposed to be the holographic dual configuration of scalar conformal partial waves, from the perspectives of CFT operator product expansions. To this end, we explicitly consider three point GWDs which are natural building blocks of all possible four point GWDs, discuss their gluing procedure through integration over spectral parameter, and this leads us to a direct identification with the integral representation of CFT conformal partial waves. As a main application of this general construction, we consider the hologr…
In this work we explore the geodesic deviations of spinning test particles in a string inspired Einstein-Kalb Ramond background. Such a background is known to be equivalent to a spacetime geometry with torsion. We have shown here that the antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field has significant effect on the geodesic deviation of a spinning test particle. A search for an observational evidence of such an effect in astrophysical experiments may lead to a better undestanding of the geometry of the background spacetime.
We use the formalism of geodesic Witten diagrams to study the holographic realization of the conformal block expansion for entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals. The agreement between the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and the identity block contribution has a dual realization as the product of bulk to boundary propagators. Quantum bulk corrections instead arise from stripped higher order diagrams and back-reaction effects; these are also mapped to the structure for $G_N^0$ terms found in \cite{Faulkner:2013ana}, with the former identified as the bulk entanglement entropy across the Ryu-Takay…
This paper studies various properties of the Pomeransky-Sen'kov doubly-spinning black ring spacetime. I discuss the structure of the ergoregion, and then go on to demonstrate the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for null, zero energy geodesics, which exist in the ergoregion. These geodesics are used to construct geometrically motivated coordinates that cover the black hole horizon. Finally, I relate this weak form of separability to the existence of a conformal Killing tensor in a particular 4-dimensional spacetime obtained by Kaluza-Klein reduction, and show that a related conform…
The motion of spinning massless particles in gravitationally curved backgrounds is revisited by considering new types of constraints. Those constraints guarantee zero mass ($P_μP^μ=0$) and they allow for the possibility of trajectories which are not simply null geodesics. To exemplify this previously unknown possibility, the equations of motion are solved for radial motion in Schwarzschild background. It is found that the particle experiences a spin-induced energy shift, which is proportional to the Hawking temperature of the black hole background.
We develop a new method for decomposing Witten diagrams into conformal blocks. The steps involved are elementary, requiring no explicit integration, and operate directly in position space. Central to this construction is an appealingly simple answer to the question: what object in AdS computes a conformal block? The answer is a "geodesic Witten diagram," which is essentially an ordinary exchange Witten diagram, except that the cubic vertices are not integrated over all of AdS, but only over bulk geodesics connecting the boundary operators. In particular, we consider the case of four-point func…
In this paper we discuss geodesic Witten diagrams in generic holographic conformal field theories with boundary or defect. Boundary CFTs allow two different decompositions of two-point functions into conformal blocks: boundary channel and ambient channel. Building on earlier work, we derive a holographic dual of the boundary channel decomposition in terms of bulk-to-bulk propagators on lower dimensional AdS slices. In the situation in which we can treat the boundary or defect as a perturbation around pure AdS spacetime, we obtain the leading corrections to the two-point function both in bounda…
Using a geometry wider than Riemannian one, the parameterized absolute parallelism (PAP-) geometry, we derived a new curve containing two parameters. In the context of the geometrization philosophy, this new curve can be used as a trajectory of charged spinning test particle in any unified field theory constructed in the PAP-space. We show that imposing certain conditions on the two parameters, the new curve can be reduced to a geodesic curve giving the motion of a scalar test particle or/and a modified geodesic giving the motion of neutral spinning test particle in gravitational field. The ne…
In an alternative interpretation, the Seiberg-Witten map is shown to be induced by a field dependent co-ordinate transformation connecting noncommutative and ordinary space-times. Furthermore, following our previous ideas, it has been demonstrated here that the above (field dependent co-ordinate) transformation can occur naturally in the Batalin-Tyutin extended space version of the relativistic spinning particle model, (in a particular gauge). There is no need to postulate the space-time non-commutativity in an {\it ad hoc} way: It emerges from the spin degrees of freedom.
The equations of motion for the position and spin of a classical particle coupled to an external electromagnetic and gravitational potential are derived from an action principle. The constraints insuring a correct number of independent spin components are automatically satisfied. In general the spin is not Fermi-Walker transported nor does the position follow a geodesic, although the deviations are small for most situations.
We develop a systematic approach to evaluating AdS loop amplitudes based on the spectral (or "split") representation of bulk-to-bulk propagators, which re-expresses loop diagrams in terms of spectral integrals and higher-point tree diagrams. In this work we focus on 2pt one-loop Witten diagrams involving totally symmetric fields of arbitrary mass and integer spin. As an application of this framework, we study the contribution to the anomalous dimension of higher-spin currents generated by bubble diagrams in higher-spin gauge theories on AdS.
In this article, an alternative interpretation of the Seiberg-Witten map in non-commutative field theory is provided. We show that the Seiberg-Witten map can be induced in a geometric way, by a field dependent co-ordinate transformation that connects noncommutative and ordinary space-times. Furthermore, in continuation of our earlier works, it has been demonstrated here that the above (field dependent co-ordinate) transformations are present in a gauge fixed version of the relativistic spinning particle model, embedded in the Batalin-Tyutin extended space. We emphasize that the space-time non-…
In this paper we consider both Abelian as well as non-Abelian T-duals of the Klebanov-Witten background and inspect their various Penrose limits. We show that these backgrounds admit pp-wave solutions in the neighbourhood of appropriate null geodesics. We study the quantization of closed string propagating on some of the resulting pp-wave backgrounds and comment on the probable field theory duals.
The geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in Euclidean Taub-NUT space is analysed. The constants of motion are expressed in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. Some previous results from the literature are corrected.
In this paper we discuss geodesic Witten diagrams in general holographic conformal field theories with boundary or defect. In boundary or defect conformal field theory, two-point functions are non-trivial and can be decomposed into conformal blocks in two distinct ways; ambient channel decomposition and boundary channel decomposition. In our previous work we only consider two-point functions of same operators. We generalize our previous work to a situation where operators in two-point functions are different. We obtain two distinct decomposition for two-point functions of different operators.
We review the geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in curved spaces. Investigating the generalized Killing equations for spinning spaces, we express the constants of motion in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. The general results are applied to the case of the four-dimensional Euclidean Taub-NUT spinning space. A simple exact solution, corresponding to trajectories lying on a cone, is given.
Conformal mapping techniques are used to determine analytically the geodesics on the Seiberg-Witten Riemann surface which correspond to the BPS dyon states in N=2 SUSY QCD with gauge group SU(2) and up to three flavors of massless fundamental matter. The results are exact for zero and two flavors, and approximate in the weak-coupling limit for one and three flavors. The presence of states of magnetic charge 2, in the three-flavor case only, is confirmed.
In this work we present a systematic study of AdS$_{d+1}$ loop amplitudes for gluons and gravitons using momentum space techniques. Inspired by the recent progress in tree level computation, we construct a differential operator that can act on a scalar factor in order to generate gluon and graviton loop integrands: this systematizes the computation for any given loop level Witten diagram. We then give a general prescription in this formalism, and discuss it for bubble, triangle, and box diagrams.
We give a holographic description of global conformal blocks in two dimensional conformal field theory on the sphere and on the torus. We show that the conformal blocks for one-point functions on the torus can be written as Witten diagrams in thermal AdS. This is accomplished by deriving a general conformal Casimir equation for global conformal blocks, and showing that Witten diagrams obey the same equation. We study the semi-classical limit of n-point conformal blocks, and show that these equal the action of a network of bulk world-lines obeying appropriate geodesic equations. We give an alte…
We consider the dynamics of the motion of a particle of mass M and spin J in AdS_3. The study reveals the presence of different dynamical sectors depending on the relative values of M, J and the AdS_3 radius R. For the subcritical M^2 R^2-J^2 >0 and supercritical M^2 R^2-J^2<0 cases, it is seen that the equations of motion give the geodesics of AdS_3. For the critical case M^2R^2=J^2 there exist extra gauge transformations which further reduce the physical degrees of freedom, and the motion corresponds to the geodesics of AdS_2. This result should be useful in the holographic interpretation of…
We show that the frame of the Kerr spinning particle consists of two topologically coupled strings. One of them is the Kerr singular ring representing a string with an orientifold world-sheet. It has electromagnetic excitations (traveling waves), which corresponds to the old model of the Kerr's microgeon. The excitations induce the appearance of the extra axial string which is topologically coupled to the Kerr circular string and is a carrier of pp-waves and fermionic zero modes. This string can be described by the Witten field model for superconducting strings.
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are used for investigations of influence of the spin-gravity coupling on a highly relativistic spinning particle in Schwarzschild's field. It is established that interaction of the particle spin with the gravitomagnetic components of the field, estimated in the proper frame of the particle, causes the large acceleration of the spinning particle relative to geodesic free fall. As a result the accelerated charged spinning particle can generate intensive electromagnetic radiation when its velocity is highly relativistic. The significant contribution of the highl…
We investigate a class of gravitational pp-waves which represent the exterior vacuum field of spinning particles moving with the speed of light. Such exact spacetimes are described by the original Brinkmann form of the pp-wave metric including the often neglected off-diagonal terms. We put emphasis on a clear physical and geometrical interpretation of these off-diagonal metric components. We explicitly analyze several new properties of these spacetimes associated with the spinning character of the source, such as rotational dragging of frames, geodesic deviation, impulsive limits and the corre…
The problem of a regular matter source for the Kerr spinning particle is discussed. A class of minimal deformations of the Kerr-Newman solution is considered obeying the conditions of regularity and smoothness for the metric and its matter source. It is shown that for charged source corresponding matter forms a rotating bag-like core having (A)dS interior and smooth domain wall boundary. Similarly, the requirement of regularity of the Kerr-Newman electromagnetic field leads to superconducting properties of the core. We further consider the U(I) x U'(I) field model (which was used by Witten to …
The idea that the quantum space-time of microphysics may be fractal everywhere was intensively investigated recently, and several authors have presented the geodesic equations of different fractal space - times. In the present work we obtain the geodesic and the geodesic deviation equations in fractal space-times by using the Bazanski method. We also extend this approach to obtain the equations of motion for spinning and spinning charged particles in the above-mentioned spaces, in a similar way to their counterparts in Riemannian geometry.
We extend the Mellin representation of conformal field theory (CFT) to allow for conformal boundaries and interfaces. We consider the simplest holographic setup dual to an interface CFT - a brane filling an $AdS_{d}$ subspace of $AdS_{d+1}$ - and perform a systematic study of Witten diagrams in this setup. As a byproduct of our analysis, we show that geodesic Witten diagrams in this geometry reproduce interface CFT$_d$ conformal blocks, generalizing the analogous statement for CFTs with no defects.
We give a review of the works devoted to the treatment of the Kerr super black hole solution as a spinning particle. The real, complex and stringy structures of the Kerr and super-Kerr geometries are discussed, as well as the recent results on the regular matter source for the Kerr spinning particle. It is shown that the source has to represent a rotating bag-like bubble having (A)dS interior and a smooth domain wall boundary. The given by Morris supersymmetric generalization of the U(I) x U'(I) field model (which was used by Witten to describe cosmic superconducting strings) is considered, an…
Using a field theory generalization of the spinning top motion, we construct nonabelian generalizations of the sine-Gordon theory according to each symmetric spaces. A Lagrangian formulation of these generalized sine-Gordon theories is given in terms of a deformed gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action which also accounts for integrably perturbed coset conformal field theories. As for physical applications, we show that they become precisely the effective field theories of self-induced transparency in nonlinear optics. This provides a dictionary between field theory and nonlinear optics.
A new method to compute correlation functions in AdS$_{d+1}$ in general dimension is introduced, considering a particle quantised in the worldline formalism of quantum field theory, coupled to bulk fields, in particular gravity, quantised in the standard manner. This gives a systematic two-parameter perturbative expansion organised by small parameters $G_N$ and the inverse mass of the particle, complementary to the usual Witten diagram expansion. This connects closely to CFT language, with the geodesic Witten diagram representation of global conformal blocks emerging naturally, and for two dim…
The low-energy limit of string theory contains an anomaly-canceling correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action, which defines an effective theory: Chern-Simons (CS) modified gravity. The CS correction consists of the product of a scalar field with the Pontryagin density, where the former can be treated as a background field (non-dynamical formulation) or as an evolving field (dynamical formulation). Many solutions of general relativity persist in the modified theory; a notable exception is the Kerr metric, which has sparked a search for rotating black hole solutions. Here, for the first time, w…
We construct a new class of differential operators that naturally act on AdS harmonic functions. These are weight shifting operators that change the spin and dimension of AdS representations. Together with CFT weight shifting operators, the new operators obey crossing equations that relate distinct representations of the conformal group. We apply our findings to the computation of Witten diagrams, focusing on the particular case of cubic interactions and on massive, symmetric and traceless fields. In particular we show that tree level 4-point Witten diagrams with arbitrary spins, both in the e…
We study a holographic construction of conformal blocks in the Regge limit of four-point scalar correlation functions by using coordinates of the two-sided Rindler-AdS black hole. As a generalization of geodesic Witten diagrams, we construct diagrams with four external scalar fields in the Rindler-AdS black hole by integrating over two half-geodesics between the centers of Penrose diagrams and points at the AdS boundary. We demonstrate that late-time behaviors of the diagrams coincide with the Regge behaviors of conformal blocks. We also point out their relevance with the pole-skipping phenome…
