The study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties originally arose from arithmetic geometry, but many problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are purely Lie-theoretic in nature. This survey deals with recent progress on several important problems on affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain twisted orbital integrals arising from the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The main tools include the Base Change Fundamental Lemma and $q$-analogues of the Kostant partition functions. This paper studies affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine flag manifold of GL_2. At first we determine all such varieties up to isomorphy. After this we investigate the representations of the sigma-stabilizer of an element b of the group on the etale cohomology of the affine Deligne-Lusztig variety X_w(b). We describe such representations as inductions from compact subgroups and in terms of noncuspidal representations.

In this paper we study higher Deligne--Lusztig representations of reductive groups over finite quotients of discrete valuation rings. At even levels, we show that these geometrically constructed representations coincide with certain induced representations in the generic case; this gives a solution to a problem raised by Lusztig. The Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to the Coxeter classes of the algebraic groups 2A2, 2B2 and 2G2 are affine algebraic curves. We produce explicit projective models of the closures of these curves. Furthermore for $d$ the Coxeter number of these groups, we find polynomials for each of these models that cut out the $\F_q$-points, the $\F_{q^d}$-points and the $\F_{q^{d+1}}$-points, and demonstrate a relation satisfied by these polynomials.

We prove a conjecture made by Drinfeld-Wang and Gaitsgory on the Deligne-Lusztig duality for D-modules on $Bun_G(X)$. We investigate Siegel modular varieties in positive characteristic with Iwahori level structure. On these spaces, we have the Newton stratification, and the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification; one would like to understand how these stratifications are related to each other. We give a simple description of all KR strata which are entirely contained in the supersingular locus as disjoint unions of Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We also give an explicit numerical description of the KR stratification in terms of abelian varieties.
