Boundary obstructed topological insulators are an unusual class of higher-order topological insulators with topological characteristics determined by the so-called Wannier bands. Boundary obstructed phases can harbor hinge/corner modes, but these modes can often be destabilized by a phase transition on the boundary instead of the bulk. While there has been much work on the stability of topological insulators in the presence disorder, the topology of a disordered Wannier band, and disorder-induced Wannier transitions have not been extensively studied. In this work, we focus on the simplest example of a Wannier topological insulator: a mirror-symmetric $π$-flux ladder in 1D. We find that the Wannier topology is robust to disorder, and derive a real-space renormalization group procedure to understand a new type of strong disorder-induced transition between non-trivial and trivial Wannier topological phases. We also establish a connection between the Wannier topology of the ladder and the energy band topology of a related system with a physical boundary cut, something which has generally been conjectured for clean models, but has not been studied in the presence of disorder.
The optical analogues of Bloch oscillations and their associated Wannier-Stark ladders have been recently analyzed. In this paper we propose an elastic realization of these ladders, employing for this purpose the torsional vibrations of specially designed one-dimensional elastic systems. We have measured, for the first time, the ladder wave amplitudes, which are not directly accessible either in the quantum mechanical or optical cases. The wave amplitudes are spatially localized and coincide rather well with theoretically predicted amplitudes. The rods we analyze can be used to localize differ…
We study numerically the linear optical response of a quasiparticle moving on a one-dimensional disordered lattice in the presence of a linear bias. The random site potential is assumed to be long-range-correlated with a power-law spectral density $S(k) \sim 1/k^α$, $α> 0$. This type of correlations results in a phase of extended states at the band center, provided $α$ is larger than a critical value $α_c$ [F. A. B. F. de Moura and M. L. Lyra, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{81}, 3735 (1998)]. The width of the delocalized phase can be tested by applying an external electric field: Bloch-like oscillat…
We propose a general method of constructing Wannier functions in disordered systems directly out of energy eigenstates. This method consists of two successive operations: (i) a phase transformation setting the proper localization center; (ii) the mixing of adjacent states in energy to sufficiently minimize the spread of the Wannier functions. The latter operation can be well approximated by a band matrix, further facilitating the calculation. Detailed implementation of our method is illustrated with one dimensional systems; the generalization to higher dimensions is straightforward.
We study antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with strong bond randomness, using the real space renormalization group method. We find the low-temperature spin susceptibility of the system follows non-universal power laws, and the ground state spin-spin correlation is short-ranged. Our results suggest that there is no phase transition when the bond randomness increases from zero; for strong enough randomness the system is in a Griffith region with divergent spin susceptibility and short-range spin-spin correlation.
We study the appearance of bound states in the spin gap of spin-1/2 ladders induced by weak bond disorder. Starting from the strong-coupling limit, i.e., the limit of weakly coupled dimers, we perform a projection on the single-triplet subspace and derive the position of bound states for the single impurity problem of one modified coupling as well as for small impurity clusters. The case of a finite concentration of impurities is treated with the coherent-potential approximation in the strong-coupling limit and compared with numerical results. Furthermore, we analyze the details in the structu…
We discuss the effect of weak bond-disorder in two-leg spin ladders on the dispersion relation of the elementary triplet excitations with a particular focus on the appearance of bound states in the spin gap. Both the cases of modified exchange couplings on the rungs and the legs of the ladder are analyzed. Based on a projection on the single-triplet subspace, the single-impurity and small cluster problems are treated analytically in the strong-coupling limit. Numerically, we study the problem of a single impurity in a spin ladder by exact diagonalization to obtain the low-lying excitations. At…
The influence of nonmagnetic doping on the thermodynamic properties of two-leg S = 1/2 spin ladders is studied in this paper. It is shown that, for a weak interchain coupling, the problem can be mapped onto a model of random mass Dirac (Majorana) fermions. We investigate in detail the structure of the fermionic states localized at an individual mass kink (zero modes) in the framework of a generalized Dirac model. The low-temperature thermodynamic properties are dominated by these zero modes. We use the single-fermion density of states, known to exhibit the Dyson singularity in the zero-energy …
We examine the interplay of interaction and disorder for a Heisenberg spin ladder system with random fields. We identify many-body localized states based on the entanglement entropy scaling, where delocalized and localized states have volume and area laws, respectively. We first establish the quantum phase transition at a critical random field strength $h_c \sim 8.5\pm 0.5$, where all energy eigenstates are localized beyond that value. Interestingly, the entanglement entropy and fluctuation of the bipartite magnetization show distinct probability distributions which characterize different quan…
We study effects of weak nonlineary on localization of waves in disordered Stark ladder corresponding to propagation in presence of disorder and a static field. Our numerical results show that nonlinearity leads to delocalization with subdiffusive spreading along the ladder. The exponent of spreading remains close to its value in absence of the static field.
An interacting system subjected to a strong linear potential can host a many-body localized (MBL) phase when being slightly perturbed. This so-called Wannier-Stark or `tilted-field' MBL phase inherits many properties from the well-investigated disordered MBL phase, and provides an alternative route to experimentally engineer interacting localized systems without quenched disorder. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of entanglement in a Wannier-Stark MBL system coupled to a dephasing environment. As an accessible entanglement proxy, we use the third Rényi negativity $R_3$, which reduces …
Low temperature properties of antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with bond randomness and site dilution (or doping with nonmagnetic impurities) are studied using the real-space renormalization-group technique. We find that for non zero doping concentrations the systems are driven into a phase dominated by large effective spins, i.e. the Large Spin phase. The susceptibility follows a universal Curie-like 1/T behavior at low temperature, regardless of the doping concentrations (as long as it is nonzero) and the strength of bond randomness. Very similar behavior has been found in ladders t…
The effect of quenched disorder on the low-energy properties of various antiferromagnetic spin ladder models is studied by a numerical strong disorder renormalization group method and by density matrix renormalization. For strong enough disorder the originally gapped phases with finite topological or dimer order become gapless. In these quantum Griffiths phases the scaling of the energy, as well as the singularities in the dynamical quantities are characterized by a finite dynamical exponent, z, which varies with the strength of disorder. At the phase boundaries, separating topologically disti…
We discuss the conditions under which an anomaly occurs in conductance and localization length of Anderson model on a lattice. Using the ladder hamiltonian and analytical calculation of average conductance we find the set of resonance conditions which complements the $π$-coupling rule for anomalies. We identify those anomalies that might vanish due to the symmetry of the lattice or the distribution of the disorder. In terms of the dispersion relation it is known from strictly one-dimensional model that the lowest order (i.e., the most strong) anomalies satisfy the equation $E(k)=E(3k)$. We sho…
We study spreading wave packets in a disordered nonlinear ladder with broken time-reversal symmetry induced by synthetic gauge fields. The model describes the dynamics of interacting bosons in a disordered and driven optical ladder within a mean-field approximation. The second moment of the wave packet $m_{2} = g t^α$ grows subdiffusively with the universal exponent $α\simeq 1/3$ similar to the time-reversal case. However the prefactor $g$ is strongly modified by the field strength and shows a non-monotonic dependence. For a weak field, the prefactor increases since time-reversal enhanced back…

We demonstrate the existence of exact atypical many-body eigenstates in a class of disordered, interacting one-dimensional quantum systems that includes the Fermi-Hubbard model as a special case. These atypical eigenstates, which generically have finite energy density and are exponentially many in number, are populated by noninteracting excitations. They can exhibit Anderson localization with area-law eigenstate entanglement or, surprisingly, ballistic transport at any disorder strength. These properties differ strikingly from those of typical eigenstates nearby in energy, which we show give r…
One dimensional free-fermions and hard-core bosons are often considered to be equivalent. Indeed, when restricted to nearest-neighbor hopping on a chain the particles cannot exchange themselves, and therefore hardly experience their own statistics. Apart from the off-diagonal correlations which depends on the so-called Jordan-Wigner string, real-space observables are similar for free-fermions and hard-core bosons on a chain. Interestingly, by coupling only two chains, thus forming a two-leg ladder, particle exchange becomes allowed, and leads to a totally different physics between free-fermion…
We study a quantum particle coupled to hard-core bosons and propagating on disordered ladders with $R$ legs. The particle dynamics is studied with the help of rate equations for the boson-assisted transitions between the Anderson states. We demonstrate that for finite $R < \infty$ and sufficiently strong disorder the dynamics is subdiffusive, while the two-dimensional planar systems with $R\to \infty$ appear to be diffusive for arbitrarily strong disorder. The transition from diffusive to subdiffusive regimes may be identified via statistical fluctuations of resistivity. The corresponding dist…
We consider one-dimensional bosonic chains with a repulsive boson-boson interaction that decays exponentially on large length-scales. This model describes transport of Cooper-pairs in a Josepshon junction array, or transport of magnetic flux quanta in quantum-phase-slip ladders, i.e. arrays of superconducting wires in a ladder-configuration that allow for the coherent tunnelling of flux quanta. In the low-frequency, long wave-length regime these chains can be mapped to an effective model of a one-dimensional elastic field in a disordered potential. The onset of transport in these systems, when…
We study disorder-free many-body localization in the flat-band Creutz ladder, which was recently realized in cold-atoms in an optical lattice. In a non-interacting case, the flat-band structure of the system leads to a Wannier wavefunction localized on four adjacent lattice sites. In the flat-band regime both with and without interactions, the level spacing analysis exhibits Poisson-like distribution indicating the existence of disorder-free localization. Calculations of the inverse participation ratio support this observation. Interestingly, this type of localization is robust to weak disorde…
The energy spectra of quasi-one dimensional quasiperiodic ladder networks are analyzed within a tight binding description. In particular, we show that if a selected set of sites in each strand of a ladder is tunnel-coupled to quantum dots attached from a side, absolutely continuous subbands can be generated in the spectrum if one tunes the dot potential and the dot-strand coupling appropriately. Typical cases with two and three strand Fibonacci ladders in the off diagonal model are discussed in details. We also discuss the possibility of re-entrant insulator-metal transition for a general n-st…
We study synchronization in disordered arrays of Josephson junctions. In the first half of the paper, we consider the relation between the coupled resistively- and capacitively shunted junction (RCSJ) equations for such arrays and effective phase models of the Winfree type. We describe a multiple-time scale analysis of the RCSJ equations for a ladder array of junctions \textit{with non-negligible capacitance} in which we arrive at a second order phase model that captures well the synchronization physics of the RCSJ equations for that geometry. In the second half of the paper, motivated by rece…
Quasi-one-dimensional spin-Peierls and spin-ladder systems are characterized by a gap in the spin-excitation spectrum, which can be modeled at low energies by that of Dirac fermions with a mass. In the presence of disorder these systems can still be described by a Dirac fermion model, but with a random mass. Some peculiar properties, like the Dyson singularity in the density of states, are well known and attributed to creation of low-energy states due to the disorder. We take one step further and study single-particle correlations by means of Berezinskii's diagram technique. We find that, at l…
We investigate the effect of disordered vacancies on the normal-state electronic structure of the newly discovered alkali-intercalated iron selenide superconductors. To this end we use a recently developed Wannier function based method to calculate from first principles the configuration-averaged spectral function <A(k,w)> of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 with disordered Fe and K vacancies. We find that the disorder can suppress the expected Fermi surface reconstruction without completely destroying the Fermi surface. More interestingly, the disorder effect raises the chemical potential significantly, giving e…
Experimental realizations of disorder in optical lattices generate a distribution of the Bose-Hubbard (BH) parameters, like on-site potentials, hopping strengths, and interaction energies. We analyze this distribution for bosons in a bichromatic quasi-periodic potential by determining the generalized Wannier functions and calculating the corresponding BH parameters. Using a local mean-field cluster analysis, we study the effect of the corresponding disorder on the phase diagrams. We find a substantial amount of disorder in the hopping strengths, which produces strong deviations from the phase …
