Many-body localisation in disordered systems in one spatial dimension is typically understood in terms of the existence of an extensive number of (quasi)-local integrals of motion (LIOMs) which are thought to decay exponentially with distance and interact only weakly with one another. By contrast, little is known about the form of the integrals of motion in disorder-free systems which exhibit localisation. Here, we explicitly compute the LIOMs for disorder-free localised systems, focusing on the case of a linearly increasing potential. We show that while in the absence of interactions, the LIOMs decay faster than exponentially, the addition of interactions leads to the formation of a slow-decaying plateau at short distances. We study how the localisation properties of the LIOMs depend on the linear slope, finding that there is a significant finite-size dependence, and present evidence that adding a weak harmonic potential does not result in typical many-body localisation phenomenology. By contrast, the addition of disorder has a qualitatively different effect, dramatically modifying the properties of the LIOMS.
An interacting system subjected to a strong linear potential can host a many-body localized (MBL) phase when being slightly perturbed. This so-called Wannier-Stark or `tilted-field' MBL phase inherits many properties from the well-investigated disordered MBL phase, and provides an alternative route to experimentally engineer interacting localized systems without quenched disorder. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of entanglement in a Wannier-Stark MBL system coupled to a dephasing environment. As an accessible entanglement proxy, we use the third Rényi negativity $R_3$, which reduces …
The optical analogues of Bloch oscillations and their associated Wannier-Stark ladders have been recently analyzed. In this paper we propose an elastic realization of these ladders, employing for this purpose the torsional vibrations of specially designed one-dimensional elastic systems. We have measured, for the first time, the ladder wave amplitudes, which are not directly accessible either in the quantum mechanical or optical cases. The wave amplitudes are spatially localized and coincide rather well with theoretically predicted amplitudes. The rods we analyze can be used to localize differ…
We calculate an exact expression for the probability propagator for a noisy electric field driven tight-binding lattice. The noise considered is a two-level jump process or a telegraph process (TP) which jumps randomly between two values $\pmμ$. In the absence of a static field and in the limit of zero jump rate of the noisy field we find that the dynamics yield Bloch oscillations with frequency $μ$, while with an additional static field $ε$ we find oscillatory motion with a superposition of frequencies $(ε\pm μ)$. On the other hand, when the jump rate is `rapid', and in the absence of a stati…
We study numerically the linear optical response of a quasiparticle moving on a one-dimensional disordered lattice in the presence of a linear bias. The random site potential is assumed to be long-range-correlated with a power-law spectral density $S(k) \sim 1/k^α$, $α> 0$. This type of correlations results in a phase of extended states at the band center, provided $α$ is larger than a critical value $α_c$ [F. A. B. F. de Moura and M. L. Lyra, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{81}, 3735 (1998)]. The width of the delocalized phase can be tested by applying an external electric field: Bloch-like oscillat…
We consider spinless fermions on a finite one-dimensional lattice, interacting via nearest-neighbor repulsion and subject to a strong electric field. In the non-interacting case, due to Wannier-Stark localization, the single-particle wave functions are exponentially localized even though the model has no quenched disorder. We show that this system remains localized in the presence of interactions and exhibits physics analogous to models of conventional many-body localization (MBL). In particular, the entanglement entropy grows logarithmically with time after a quench, albeit with a slightly di…
Recent work has focused on exploring many-body localization (MBL) in systems without quenched disorder: one such proposal is Stark MBL in which small perturbations to a strong linear potential yield localization. However, as with conventional MBL, it is challenging to experimentally distinguish between non-interacting localization and true MBL. In this paper we show that several existing experimental probes, designed specifically to differentiate between these scenarios, work similarly in the Stark MBL setting. In particular we show that a modified spin-echo response (DEER) shows clear signs o…
We investigate the relaxation dynamics of an interacting Stark-localized system coupled to a dephasing bath, and compare its behavior to the conventional disorder-induced many body localized system. Specifically, we study the dynamics of population imbalance between even and odd sites, and the growth of the von Neumann entropy. For a large potential gradient, the imbalance is found to decay on a time scale that grows quadratically with the Wannier-Stark tilt. For the non-interacting system, it shows an exponential decay, which becomes a stretched exponential decay in the presence of finite int…
We study the phenomenon of many-body localization (MBL) in an interacting system subjected to a combined DC as well as a square wave AC electric field. First, the condition for the dynamical localization, coherent destruction of Wannier-Stark localization and super Bloch oscillations in the non-interacting limit, are obtained semi-classically. In the presence of interactions (and a confining/disordered potential), a static field alone leads to "Stark many-body localization", for sufficiently large field strengths. We find that in the presence of an additional high-frequency AC field, there are…
The existence of localization and mobility edges in one-dimensional lattices is commonly thought to depend on disorder (or quasidisorder). We investigate localization properties of a disorder-free lattice subject to an equally spaced electric field. We analytically show that, even though the model has no quenched disorder, this system manifests an exact mobility edge and the localization regime extends to weak fields, in contrast to gigantic field for the localization of a usual Stark lattice. For strong fields, the Wannier-Stark ladder is recovered and the number of localized eigenstates is i…
We study numerically the intraband exciton relaxation in a one-dimensional lattice with scale-free disorder, in the presence of a linear bias. Exciton transport is considered as incoherent hoppings over the eigenstates of the static lattice. The site potential of the unbiased lattice is long-range-correlated with a power-law spectral density $S(k) \sim 1/k^α$, $α> 0$. The lattice supports a phase of extended states at the center of the band, provided $α$ is larger than a critical value $α_c$ [F. A. B. F. de Moura and M. L. Lyra, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{81}, 3735 (1998)]. When the bias is appl…
We study the relaxation dynamics of an extended Fermi-Hubbard chain with a strong Wannier-Stark potential tilt coupled to a bath. When the system is subjected to dephasing noise, starting from a pure initial state the system's total von Neumann entropy is found to grow monotonously. The scenario becomes rather different when the system is coupled to a thermal bath of finite temperature. Here, for sufficiently large field gradients and initial energies, the entropy peaks in time and almost reaches its largest possible value (corresponding to the maximally mixed state), long before the system re…

Interacting quantum many-body systems are usually expected to thermalise, in the sense that the evolution of local expectation values approach a stationary value resembling a thermal ensemble. This intuition is notably contradicted in systems exhibiting many-body localisation, a phenomenon receiving significant recent attention. One of its most intriguing features is that, in stark contrast to the non-interacting case, entanglement of states grows without limit over time, albeit slowly. In this work, we establish a novel link between quantum information theory and notions of condensed matter, …
In this work we demonstrate that non-random mechanisms that lead to single-particle localization may also lead to many-body localization, even in the absence of disorder. In particular, we consider interacting spins and fermions in the presence of a linear potential. In the non-interacting limit, these models show the well known Wannier-Stark localization. We analyze the fate of this localization in the presence of interactions. Remarkably, we find that beyond a critical value of the potential gradient, these models exhibit non-ergodic behavior as indicated by their spectral and dynamical prop…
