We focus on the many-body eigenstates across a localization-delocalization phase transition. To characterize the robustness of the eigenstates, we introduce the eigenstate overlaps $\mathcal{O}$ with respect to the different boundary conditions. In the ergodic phase, the average of eigenstate overlaps $\bar{\mathcal{O}}$ is exponential decay with the increase of the system size indicating the fragility of its eigenstates, and this can be considered as an eigenstate-version butterfly effect of the chaotic systems. For localized systems, $\bar{\mathcal{O}}$ is almost size-independent showing the strong robustness of the eigenstates and the broken of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. In addition, we find that the response of eigenstates to the change of boundary conditions in many-body localized systems is identified with the single-particle wave functions in Anderson localized systems. This indicates that the eigenstates of the many-body localized systems, as the many-body wave functions, may be independent of each other. We demonstrate that this is consistent with the existence of a large number of quasilocal integrals of motion in the many-body localized phase. Our results provide a new method to study localized and delocalized systems from the perspective of eigenstates.
We study theoretically the competition between directional asymmetric coupling and disorder in a one-dimensional array of quantum emitters chirally coupled through a waveguide mode. Our calculation reveals highly nontrivial phase diagram for the eigenstates spatial profile, nonmonotonously depending on the disorder and directionality strength. The increase of the coupling asymmetry drives the transition from Anderson localization in the bulk through delocalized states to chirality-induced localization at the array edge. Counterintuitively, this transition is not smeared by strong disorder but …
The interplay between interaction, disorder, and dissipation has shown a rich phenomenology. Here we investigate a disordered XXZ spin chain in contact with a bath which, alone, would drive the system towards a highly delocalized and coherent Dicke state. We show that there exist regimes for which the natural orbitals of the single-particle density matrix of the steady state are all localized in the presence of strong disorders, either for weak interaction or strong interaction. We show that the averaged steady-state occupation in the eigenbasis of the open system Hamiltonian could follow an e…
We study the (de)localization phenomena of one-component lattice fermions in spin backgrounds. The O(3) classical spin variables on sites fluctuate thermally through the ordinary nearest-neighbor coupling. Their complex two-component (CP$^1$-Schwinger boson) representation forms a composite U(1) gauge field on bond, which acts on fermions as a fluctuating hopping amplitude in a gauge invariant manner. For the case of antiferromagnetic (AF) spin coupling, the model has close relationship with the $t$-$J$ model of strongly-correlated electron systems. We measure the unfolded level spacing distri…

We propose a new approach to probing ergodicity and its breakdown in quantum many-body systems based on their response to a local perturbation. We study the distribution of matrix elements of a local operator between the system's eigenstates, finding a qualitatively different behaviour in the many-body localized (MBL) and ergodic phases. To characterize how strongly a local perturbation modifies the eigenstates, we introduce the parameter ${\cal G}(L)=\langle \ln (V_{nm}/δ) \rangle$, which represents a disorder-averaged ratio of a typical matrix element of a local operator $V$ to the energy le…

We consider the spatiotemporal evolution of a wave packet in disordered nonlinear Schrödinger and anharmonic oscillator chains. In the absence of nonlinearity all eigenstates are spatially localized with an upper bound on the localization length (Anderson localization). Nonlinear terms in the equations of motion destroy Anderson localization due to nonintegrability and deterministic chaos. At least a finite part of an initially localized wave packet will subdiffusively spread without limits. We analyze the details of this spreading process. We compare the evolution of single site, single mode …
In disordered two dimensional Chern insulators, a single bulk extended mode is predicted to exist per band, up to a critical disorder strength; all the other bulk modes are localized. This behavior contrasts strongly with topologically trivial two-dimensional phases, whose modes all become localized in the presence of disorder. Using a tight-binding model of a realistic photonic Chern insulator, we show that delocalized bulk eigenstates can be observed in an experimentally realistic setting. This requires the selective use of resonator losses to suppress topological edge states, and acquiring …
We examine the stability of marginally Anderson localized phase transitions between localized phases to the addition of many-body interactions, focusing in particular on the spin-glass to paramagnet transition in a disordered transverse field Ising model in one dimension. We find evidence for a perturbative instability of localization at finite energy densities once interactions are added, i.e. evidence for the relevance of interactions - in a renormalization group sense - to the non-interacting critical point governed by infinite randomness scaling. We introduce a novel diagnostic, the "susce…
In this paper, we investigate the driven dynamics of the localization transition in the non-Hermitian Aubry-André model with the periodic boundary condition. Depending on the strength of the quasi-periodic potential $λ$, this model undergoes a localization-delocalization phase transition. We find that the localization length $ξ$ satisfies $ξ\sim \varepsilon^{-ν}$ with $\varepsilon$ being the distance from the critical point and $ν=1$ being a universal critical exponent independent of the non-Hermitian parameter. In addition, from the finite-size scaling of the energy gap between the ground sta…
We study the energy minima of the fully-connected $m$-components vector spin glass model at zero temperature in an external magnetic field for $m\ge 3$. The model has a zero temperature transition from a paramagnetic phase at high field to a spin glass phase at low field. We study the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hessian in the minima of the Hamiltonian. The spectrum is gapless both in the paramagnetic and in the spin glass phase, with a pseudo-gap behaving as $λ^{m-1}$ in the paramagnetic phase and as $\sqrtλ$ in the spin glass phase. Despite the long-range nature of the model, the eig…
Motivated by the constrained many-body dynamics, the stability of the localization-delocalization properties to the inclusion of the soft constraints is addressed in random matrix models. These constraints are modeled by correlations in long-ranged hopping with Pearson correlation coefficient different from zero or unity. Counterintuitive robustness of delocalized phases, both ergodic and (multi)fractal, in these models is numerically observed and confirmed by the analytical calculations. First, matrix inversion trick is used to uncover the origin of such robustness. Next, to characterize delo…
Power-law random banded unitary matrices (PRBUM), whose matrix elements decay in a power-law fashion, were recently proposed to model the critical statistics of the Floquet eigenstates of periodically driven quantum systems. In this work, we numerically study in detail the statistical properties of PRBUM ensembles in the delocalization-localization transition regime. In particular, implications of the delocalization-localization transition for the fractal dimension of the eigenvectors, for the distribution function of the eigenvector components, and for the nearest neighbor spacing statistics …
We observe a singularity in the electronic properties of the Anderson Model of Localization with bounded diagonal disorder, which is clearly distinct from the well-established mobility edge (localization-delocalization transition) that occurs in dimensions $d>2$. We present results of numerical calculations for Anderson's original (box) distribution of onsite disorder in dimensions $d$ = 1, 2 and 3. To establish this hitherto unreported behavior, and to understand its evolution with disorder, we contrast the behavior of two different measures of the localization length of the electronic wavefu…
Uncorrelated disorder in generalized 3D Lieb models gives rise to the existence of bounded mobility edges, destroys the macroscopic degeneracy of the flat bands and breaks their compactly-localized states. We now introduce a mix of order and disorder such that this degeneracy remains and the compactly-localized states are preserved. We obtain the energy-disorder phase diagrams and identify mobility edges. Intriguingly, for large disorder the survival of the compactly-localized states induces the existence of delocalized eigenstates close to the original flat band energies -- yielding seemingly…
We analyze many-body localization (MBL) to delocalization transition in Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model of Ising spin glass (SG) in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. Based on energy resolved analysis, which is of relevance for a closed quantum system, we show that the quantum SK model has many-body mobility edges separating MBL phase which is non-ergodic and non-thermal from the delocalized phase which is ergodic and thermal. The range of the delocalized regime increases with increase in the strength of $Γ$ and eventually for $Γ$ larger than $Γ_{CP}$ the entire many-body spectrum is d…

The investigations of the spectral and dynamical delocalization-localization (DL) transition have revealed intriguing features in a wide range of non-Hermitian systems. The present study aims at exploring the spectral and dynamical properties in a non-Hermitian quasiperiodic system with asymmetric hopping in the presence of Rashba Spin-Orbit (RSO) interaction. In particular, in such systems, we have identified that the DL transition is associated with a concurrent change in the energy spectrum, where the eigenstates always break the time-reversal symmetry for all strenghts of the quasiperiodic…
We consider a one-dimensional quantum many-body system and investigate how the interplay between interaction and on-site disorder affects spatial localization and quantum correlations. The hopping amplitude is kept constant. To measure localization, we use the number of principal components (NPC), which quantifies the spreading of the system eigenstates over vectors of a given basis set. Quantum correlations are determined by a global entanglement measure $Q$, which quantifies the degree of entanglement of multipartite pure states. Our studies apply analogously to a one-dimensional system of i…
We propose a multi-scale diagonalization scheme to study disordered one-dimensional chains, in particular the transition between many-body localization (MBL) and the ergodic phase, expected to be governed by resonant spots. Our scheme focuses on the dichotomy MBL versus {ETH} (eigenstate thermalization hypothesis). We show that a few natural assumptions imply that the system is localized with probability one at criticality. On the ergodic side, delocalization is induced by a quantum avalanche seeded by large ergodic spots, whose size diverges at the transition. On the MBL side, the typical loc…
Conformational effect on electronic localization is critically investigated for the first time considering a double-stranded helical geometry (DSHG) subjected to an electric field. In the presence of electric field the DSHG behaves like a correlated disordered system whose site potentials are modulated in a cosine form like the well known Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model. The potential distribution can be modulated further by changing the orientation of the incident field. A similar kind of cosine modulation is also introduced in the inter-strand hopping integrals of the DSHG. Suitably adjusting…

We propose a method to study the transition to chaos in isolated quantum systems of interacting particles. It is based on the concept of delocalization of eigenstates in the energy shell, controlled by the Gaussian form of the strength function. We show that although the fluctuations of energy levels in integrable and non-integrable systems are principally different, global properties of the eigenstates may be quite similar, provided the interaction between particles exceeds some critical value. In this case the quench dynamics can be described analytically, demonstrating the universal statist…
We study deterministic power-law quantum hopping model with an amplitude $J(r) \propto - r^{-β}$ and local Gaussian disorder in low dimensions $d=1,2$ under the condition $d < β< 3d/2$. We demonstrate unusual combination of exponentially decreasing density of the "tail states" and localization-delocalization transition (as function of disorder strength $w$) pertinent to a small (vanishing in thermodynamic limit) fraction of eigenstates. At sub-critical disorder $w < w_c$ delocalized eigenstates with energies near the bare band edge co-exist with a strongly localized eigenstates in the same ene…
Isolated quantum systems at strong disorder can display many-body localization (MBL), a remarkable phenomena characterized by an absence of conduction even at finite temperatures. As the ratio of interactions to disorder is increased, one expects that an MBL phase will eventually undergo a dynamical phase transition to a delocalized phase. Here we constrain the nature of such a transition by exploiting the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy, as applied to the many-body eigenstates close to the transition in general dimensions. In particular, we show that at a putative continuous tran…
We theoretically study the response of a many-body localized system to a local quench from a quantum information perspective. We find that the local quench triggers entanglement growth throughout the whole system, giving rise to a logarithmic lightcone. This saturates the modified Lieb-Robinson bound for quantum information propagation in many-body localized systems previously conjectured based on the existence of local integrals of motion. In addition, near the localization-delocalization transition, we find that the final states after the local quench exhibit volume-law entanglement. We also…
We study the many-body localization (MBL) properties of a chain of interacting fermions subject to a quasiperiodic potential such that the non-interacting chain is always delocalized and displays multifractality. Contrary to naive expectations, adding interactions in this systems does not enhance delocalization, and a MBL transition is observed. Due to the local properties of the quasiperiodic potential, the MBL phase presents specific features, such as additional peaks in the density distribution. We furthermore investigate the fate of multifractality in the ergodic phase for low potential va…
We study effects of disorder on eigenstates of 1D two-component fermions with infinitely strong Hubbard repulsion. We demonstrate that the spin-independent (potential) disorder reduces the problem to the one-particle Anderson localization taking place at arbitrarily weak disorder. In contrast, a random magnetic field can cause reentrant many-body localization-delocalization transitions. Surprisingly weak magnetic field destroys one-particle localization caused by not too strong potential disorder, whereas at much stronger fields the states are many-body localized. We present numerical support …
Disorder plays a critical role in signal transport, by controlling the correlation of systems. In wave physics, disordered potentials suppress wave transport due to their localized eigenstates from random-walk scattering. Although the variation of localization with tunable disorder has been intensively studied as a bridge between ordered and disordered media, the general trend of disorder-enhanced localization has remained unchanged, failing in envisaging the existence of delocalization in highly-disordered potentials. Here, we propose the concept of 'metadisorder': tunable random-walk systems…
We study by exact diagonalization the localization properties of phonons in mass-disordered harmonic crystals of dimension $d=1,2,3$. We focus on the behavior of the typical Inverse Participation Ratio $Y_2(ω,L)$ as a function of the frequency $ω$ and of the linear length $L$ of the disordered samples. In dimensions $d=1$ and $d=2$, we find that the low-frequency part $ω\to 0$ of the spectrum satisfies the following finite-size scaling $L Y_2(ω,L)=F_{d=1}(L^{1/2} ω)$ in dimension $d=1$ and $L^2 Y_2(ω,L)=F_{d=2}((\ln L)^{1/2} ω)$ in dimension $d=2$, with the following conclusions (i) an eigenst…
We investigate the transition induced by disorder in a periodically-driven one-dimensional model displaying quantized topological transport. We show that, while instantaneous eigenstates are necessarily Anderson localized, the periodic driving plays a fundamental role in delocalizing Floquet states over the whole system, henceforth allowing for a steady state nearly-quantized current. Remarkably, this is linked to a localization/delocalization transition in the Floquet states of a one dimensional driven Anderson insulator, which occurs for periodic driving corresponding to a nontrivial loop in…
Many-body localization provides a mechanism to avoid thermalization in isolated interacting quantum systems. The breakdown of thermalization may be complete, when all eigenstates in the many-body spectrum become localized, or partial, when the so-called many-body mobility edge separates localized and delocalized parts of the spectrum. Previously, De Roeck \textit{et al.}[arXiv:1506.01505] suggested a possible instability of the many-body mobility edge in energy density. The local ergodic regions -- so called "bubbles" -- resonantly spread throughout the system, leading to delocalization. In or…
In this work we study the many-body localization (MBL) transition and relate it to the eigenstate structure in the Fock space. Besides the standard entanglement and multifractal probes, we introduce the radial probability distribution of eigenstate coefficients with respect to the Hamming distance in the Fock space from the wave function maximum and relate the cumulants of this distribution to the properties of the quasi-local integrals of motion in the MBL phase. We demonstrate non-self-averaging property of the many-body fractal dimension $D_q$ and directly relate it to the jump of $D_q$ as …
Characterizing the many-body localization (MBL) transition in strongly disordered and interacting quantum systems is an important issue in the field of condensed matter physics. We study the single particle Green's functions for a disordered interacting system in one dimension using exact diagnonalization in the infinite temperature limit and provide strong evidence that single particle excitations carry signatures of delocalization to MBL transition. In the delocalized phase, the typical values of the local density of states and the scattering rate are finite while in the MBL phase, the typic…
Thermalizing and localized many-body quantum systems present two distinct dynamical phases of matter. Recently, the fate of a localized system coupled to a thermalizing system viewed as a quantum bath received significant theoretical and experimental attention. In this work, we study a mobile impurity, representing a small quantum bath, that interacts locally with an Anderson insulator with a finite density of localized particles. Using static Hartree approximation to obtain an effective disorder strength, we formulate an analytic criterion for the perturbative stability of the localization. N…

We construct a solvable spin chain model of many-body localization (MBL) with a tunable mobility edge. This simple model not only demonstrates analytically the existence of mobility edges in interacting one-dimensional (1D) disordered systems, but also allows us to study their physics. By establishing a connection between MBL and a quantum central limit theorem (QCLT), we show that many-body localization-delocalization transitions can be visualized as tuning a mobility edge in the energy spectrum. Since the effective disorder strength for individual eigenstates depends on energy density, we id…
We analyze the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum particle coupled to local magnetic degrees of freedom that undergo a classical phase transition. Specifically, we consider a two-dimensional tight-binding model that interacts with a background of classical spins in thermal equilibrium, which are subject to Ising interactions and act as emergent, correlated disorder for the quantum particle. Particular attention is devoted to temperatures close to the ferromagnet-to-paramagnet transition. To capture the salient features of the classical transition, namely the effects of long-range correla…
The quantum random energy model provides a mean-field description of the equilibrium spin glass transition. We show that it further exhibits a many-body localization - delocalization (MBLD) transition when viewed as a closed quantum system. The mean-field structure of the model allows an analytically tractable description of the MBLD transition using the forward-scattering approximation and replica techniques. The predictions are in good agreement with the numerics. The MBLD lies at energy density significantly above the equilibrium spin glass transition, indicating that the closed system dyna…
