Let $V$ denote an $r$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, the finite field of $q^n$ elements. Then $V$ is also an $rn$-dimension vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. An $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U$ of $V$ is $(h,k)_q$-evasive if it meets the $h$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-subspaces of $V$ in $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of dimension at most $k$. The $(1,1)_q$-evasive subspaces are known as scattered and they have been intensively studied in finite geometry, their maximum size has been proved to be $\lfloor rn/2 \rfloor$ when $rn$ is even or $n=3$.
We investigate the maximum size of $(h,k)_q$-evasive subspaces, study two duality relations among them and provide various constructions. In particular, we present the first examples, for infinitely many values of $q$, of maximum scattered subspaces when $r=3$ and $n=5$. We obtain these examples in characteristics $2$, $3$ and $5$.
Given positive integers $k\leq d$ and a finite field $\mathbb{F}$, a set $S\subset\mathbb{F}^{d}$ is $(k,c)$-subspace evasive if every $k$-dimensional affine subspace contains at most $c$ elements of $S$. By a simple averaging argument, the maximum size of a $(k,c)$-subspace evasive set is at most $c |\mathbb{F}|^{d-k}$. When $k$ and $d$ are fixed, and $c$ is sufficiently large, the matching lower bound $Ω(|\mathbb{F}|^{d-k})$ is proved by Dvir and Lovett. We provide an alternative proof of this result using the random algebraic method. We also prove sharp upper bounds on the size of $(k,c)$-e…
In this work we describe an explicit, simple, construction of large subsets of F^n, where F is a finite field, that have small intersection with every k-dimensional affine subspace. Interest in the explicit construction of such sets, termed subspace-evasive sets, started in the work of Pudlak and Rodl (2004) who showed how such constructions over the binary field can be used to construct explicit Ramsey graphs. More recently, Guruswami (2011) showed that, over large finite fields (of size polynomial in n), subspace evasive sets can be used to obtain explicit list-decodable codes with optimal r…
We revisit and extend the connections between $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear rank-metric codes and evasive $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^k$. We give a unifying framework in which we prove in an elementary way how the parameters of a rank-metric code are related to special geometric properties of the associated evasive subspace, with a particular focus on the generalized rank weights. In this way, we can also provide alternative and very short proofs of known results on scattered subspaces. We then use this simplified point of view in order to get a geometric characterization of near…
Maximum scattered subspaces are not only objects of intrinsic interest in finite geometry but also powerful tools for the construction of MRD-codes, projective two-weight codes, and strongly regular graphs. In 2018 Csajbók, Marino, Polverino, and Zanella introduced a new family of maximum scattered subspaces in $\mathbb{F}_{q^6} \times \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$ arising from polynomials of type $f_b(x)=bx^q+x^{q^4}$ for certain choices of $b \in \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$. Throughout characterizations for $f_{b_2}(x)$ and $f_{b_1}(x)$ giving rise to equivalent maximum scattered subspaces, the authors conjecture…
The maximum size $A_2(8,6;4)$ of a binary subspace code of packet length $v=8$, minimum subspace distance $d=6$, and constant dimension $k=4$ is $257$, where the $2$ isomorphism types are extended lifted maximum rank distance codes. In finite geometry terms the maximum number of solids in $\operatorname{PG}(7,2)$, mutually intersecting in at most a point, is $257$. The result was obtained by combining the classification of substructures with integer linear programming techniques. This implies that the maximum size $A_2(8,6)$ of a binary mixed-dimension code of packet length $8$ and minimum sub…
It is shown that the maximum size $A_2(8,6;4)$ of a binary subspace code of packet length $v=8$, minimum subspace distance $d=4$, and constant dimension $k=4$ is at most $272$. In Finite Geometry terms, the maximum number of solids in $\operatorname{PG}(7,2)$, mutually intersecting in at most a point, is at most $272$. Previously, the best known upper bound $A_2(8,6;4)\le 289$ was implied by the Johnson bound and the maximum size $A_2(7,6;3)=17$ of partial plane spreads in $\operatorname{PG}(6,2)$. The result was obtained by combining the classification of subspace codes with parameters $(7,17…
A set of lines through the origin is called equiangular if every pair of lines defines the same angle, and the maximum size of an equiangular set of lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ was studied extensively for the last 70 years. In this paper, we study analogous questions for $k$-dimensional subspaces. We discuss natural ways of defining the angle between $k$-dimensional subspaces and correspondingly study the maximum size of an equiangular set of $k$-dimensional subspaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our bounds extend and improve a result of Blokhuis.
It is shown that the maximum size of a binary subspace code of packet length $v=6$, minimum subspace distance $d=4$, and constant dimension $k=3$ is $M=77$; in Finite Geometry terms, the maximum number of planes in $\operatorname{PG}(5,2)$ mutually intersecting in at most a point is $77$. Optimal binary $(v,M,d;k)=(6,77,4;3)$ subspace codes are classified into $5$ isomorphism types, and a computer-free construction of one isomorphism type is provided. The construction uses both geometry and finite fields theory and generalizes to any $q$, yielding a new family of $q$-ary $(6,q^6+2q^2+2q+1,4;3)…
Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Suppose that $\mathscr{F}$ is an intersecting family of $m$-dimensional subspaces of $V$. The covering number of $\mathscr{F}$ is the minimum dimension of a subspace of $V$ which intersects all elements of $\mathscr{F}$. In this paper, we give the tight upper bound for the size of $\mathscr{F}$ whose covering number is $m$, and describe the structure of $\mathscr{F}$ which reaches the upper bound. Moreover, we determine the structure of an maximum intersecting family of singular linear space with the maximum cover…

Let $n$ be a positive integer, $q$ a power of a prime, and $\mathcal{L}_n(q)$ the poset of subspaces of an $n$-dimensional vector space over a field with $q$ elements. This poset is a normalized matching poset and the set of subspaces of dimension $\left\lfloor n/2 \right\rfloor$ or those of dimension $\left\lceil n/2 \right\rceil$ are the only maximum-sized anti-chains in this poset. Strengthening this well-known and celebrated result, we show that, except in the case of $\mathcal{L}_3(2)$, these same collections of subspaces are the only maximum-sized families in $\mathcal{L}_n(q)$ that avoi…
The set of all subspaces of a given dimension in a finite classical polar space has a structure of a symmetric association scheme. If the dimension is zero, this is the scheme of the collinearity graph of the space; If the dimension is maximum, it is the dual polar scheme. In this note, we determine the full automorphism group of this scheme.
Let $n\ge2$ and $d_1,\ldots,d_n\ge2$ be integers, and $\mathcal{F}$ be a field. A vector $u\in\mathcal{F}^{d_1}\otimes\cdots\otimes\mathcal{F}^{d_n}$ is called a product vector if $u=u^{[1]}\otimes\cdots\otimes u^{[n]}$ for some $u^{[1]}\in\mathcal{F}^{d_1},\ldots,u^{[n]}\in\mathcal{F}^{d_n}$. A basis composed of product vectors is called a product basis. In this paper, we show that the maximum dimension of subspaces of $\mathcal{F}^{d_1}\otimes\cdots\otimes\mathcal{F}^{d_n}$ with no product basis is equal to $d_1d_2\cdots d_n-2$ if either (i) $n=2$ or (ii) $n\ge3$ and $\#\mathcal{F}>\max\{d_i…
After a seminal paper by Shekeey (2016), a connection between maximum $h$-scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $V(r,q^n)$ and maximum rank distance (MRD) codes has been established in the extremal cases $h=1$ and $h=r-1$. In this paper, we propose a connection for any $h\in\{1,\ldots,r-1\}$, extending and unifying all the previously known ones. As a consequence, we obtain examples of non-square MRD codes which are not equivalent to generalized Gabidulin or twisted Gabidulin codes. Up to equivalence, we classify MRD codes having the same parameters as the ones in our connection. Also, we deter…
Let $\mathscr{P}$ be a symplectic polar space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, and $\mathscr{P}_m$ denote the set of all $m$-dimensional subspaces in $\mathscr{P}$. We say a $t$-intersecting subfamily of $\mathscr{P}_m$ is trivial if there exists a $t$-dimensional subspace contained in each member of this family. In this paper, we determine the structure of maximum sized non-trivial $t$-intersecting subfamilies of $\mathscr{P}_m$.
Let $f$ be an $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear function over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$. If the $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U= \{ (x^{q^t}, f(x)) : x\in \mathbb{F}_{q^n} \}$ defines a maximum scattered linear set, then we call $f$ a scattered polynomial of index $t$. As these polynomials appear to be very rare, it is natural to look for some classification of them. We say a function $f$ is an exceptional scattered polynomial of index $t$ if the subspace $U$ associated with $f$ defines a maximum scattered linear set in $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^{mn})$ for infinitely many $m$. Our main results are the complete classification…
Let $\mathscr{P}$ be a symplectic polar space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, and $\mathscr{P}_m$ denote the collection of all $k$-dimensional totally isotropic subspace in $\mathscr{P}$. Let $\mathscr{F}_1\subset\mathscr{P}_{m_1}$ and $\mathscr{F}_2\subset\mathscr{P}_{m_2}$ satisfy $\dim(F_1\cap F_2)\ge t$ for any $F_1\in\mathscr{F}_1$ and $F_2\in\mathscr{F}_2$. We say they are cross $t$-intersecting families. Moreover, we say they are trivial if each member of them contains a fixed $t$-dimensional totally isotropic subspace. In this paper, we show that cross $t$-intersecting families wit…
Let $n$ and $t$ be positive integers with $t<n$, and let $q$ be a prime power. A $\textit{partial $(t-1)$-spread}$ of ${\rm PG}(n-1,q)$ is a set of $(t-1)$-dimensional subspaces of ${\rm PG}(n-1,q)$ that are pairwise disjoint. Let $r=n\mbox{ mod } t$ and $0\leq r<t$. We prove that if $t>(q^r-1)/(q-1)$, then the maximum size, i.e., cardinality, of a partial $(t-1)$-spread of ${\rm PG}(n-1,q)$ is $(q^n-q^{t+r})/(q^t-1)+1$. This essentially settles a main open problem in this area. Prior to this result, this maximum size was only known for $r\in\{0,1\}$ and for $r=q=2$.
In [2] and [19] are presented the first two families of maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$. More recently in [23] and in [5], new examples of maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $V(2,q^n)$ have been constructed, but the equivalence problem of the corresponding linear sets is left open. Here we show that the $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets presented in [23] and in [5], for $n=6,8$, are new. Also, for $q$ odd, $q\equiv \pm 1,\,0 \pmod 5$, we present new examples of maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$, ari…
A partial $t$-spread in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is a collection of $t$-dimensional subspaces with trivial intersection such that each non-zero vector is covered at most once. We present some improved upper bounds on the maximum sizes.
Let $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ be the residue class ring of integers modulo $p^s$, where $p$ is a prime number and $s$ is a positive integer. Using matrix representation and the inner rank of a matrix, we study the intersection, join, dimension formula and dual subspaces on vector subspaces of $\mathbb{Z}^n_{p^s}$. Based on these results, we investigate the Grassmann graph $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$. $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ is a connected vertex-transitive graph, and we determine its valency, clique number and maximum cliques. Finally, we characterize the automorphisms of $G_{p^s}(n,m)$.
Let $d$ and $k$ be integers with $1 \leq k \leq d-1$. Let $Λ$ be a $d$-dimensional lattice and let $K$ be a $d$-dimensional compact convex body symmetric about the origin. We provide estimates for the minimum number of $k$-dimensional linear subspaces needed to cover all points in $Λ\cap K$. In particular, our results imply that the minimum number of $k$-dimensional linear subspaces needed to cover the $d$-dimensional $n \times \cdots \times n$ grid is at least $Ω(n^{d(d-k)/(d-1)-\varepsilon})$ and at most $O(n^{d(d-k)/(d-1)})$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is an arbitrarily small constant. This near…
We improve on the lower bound of the maximum number of planes of ${\rm PG}(8,q)$ mutually intersecting in at most one point leading to the following lower bound: ${\cal A}_q(9, 4; 3) \ge q^{12}+2q^8+2q^7+q^6+q^5+q^4+1$ for constant dimension subspace codes. We also construct two new non-equivalent $(6, (q^3-1)(q^2+q+1), 4; 3)_q$ constant dimension subspace orbit-codes.
We improve on the lower bound of the maximum number of planes in $\operatorname{PG}(8,q)\cong\F_q^{9}$ pairwise intersecting in at most a point. In terms of constant dimension codes this leads to $A_q(9,4;3)\ge q^{12}+ 2q^8+2q^7+q^6+2q^5+2q^4-2q^2-2q+1$. This result is obtained via a more general construction strategy, which also yields other improvements.
We denote by $\mathcal{P}_q$ the vector space of functions from a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ to itself, which can be represented as the space $\mathcal{P}_q := \mathbb{F}_q[x]/(x^q-x)$ of polynomial functions. We denote by $\mathcal{O}_n \subset \mathcal{P}_q$ the set of polynomials that are either the zero polynomial, or have at most $n$ distinct roots in $\mathbb{F}_q$. Given two subspaces $Y,Z$ of $\mathcal{P}_q$, we denote by $\langle Y,Z \rangle$ their span. We prove that the following are equivalent. A) Let $k, q$ integers, with $q$ a prime power and $2 \leq k \leq q$. Suppose that eith…
Linear codes in the projective space $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$, the set of all subspaces of the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, were first considered by Braun, Etzion and Vardy. The Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}_q(n,k)$ is the collection of all subspaces of dimension $k$ in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$. We study equidistant linear codes in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$ in this paper and establish that the normalized minimum distance of a linear code is maximum if and only if it is equidistant. We prove that the upper bound on the size of such class of linear codes is $2^n$ when $q=2$ as conjectured by Braun et al. Moreover, the c…
Linearized polynomials have attracted a lot of attention because of their applications in both geometric and algebraic areas. Let $q$ be a prime power, $n$ be a positive integer and $σ$ be a generator of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}\colon\mathbb{F}_q)$. In this paper we provide closed formulas for the coefficients of a $σ$-trinomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which ensure that the dimension of the kernel of $f$ equals its $σ$-degree, that is linearized polynomials with maximum kernel. As a consequence, we present explicit examples of linearized trinomials with maximum kernel and characteriz…
