Over the last few decades, existing Partial Differential Equation (PDE) solvers have demonstrated a tremendous success in solving complex, non-linear PDEs. Although accurate, these PDE solvers are computationally costly. With the advances in Machine Learning (ML) technologies, there has been a significant increase in the research of using ML to solve PDEs. The goal of this work is to develop an ML-based PDE solver, that couples important characteristics of existing PDE solvers with ML technologies. The two solver characteristics that have been adopted in this work are: 1) the use of discretization-based schemes to approximate spatio-temporal partial derivatives and 2) the use of iterative algorithms to solve linearized PDEs in their discrete form. In the presence of highly non-linear, coupled PDE solutions, these strategies can be very important in achieving good accuracy, better stability and faster convergence. Our ML-solver, DiscretizationNet, employs a generative CNN-based encoder-decoder model with PDE variables as both input and output features. During training, the discretization schemes are implemented inside the computational graph to enable faster GPU computation of PDE residuals, which are used to update network weights that result into converged solutions. A novel iterative capability is implemented during the network training to improve the stability and convergence of the ML-solver. The ML-Solver is demonstrated to solve the steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in 3-D for several cases such as, lid-driven cavity, flow past a cylinder and conjugate heat transfer.
A conservative primitive variable discrete exterior calculus (DEC) discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations is performed. An existing DEC method (Mohamed, M. S., Hirani, A. N., Samtaney, R. (2016). Discrete exterior calculus discretization of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations over surface simplicial meshes. Journal of Computational Physics, 312, 175-191) is modified to this end, and is extended to include the energy-preserving time integration and the Coriolis force to enhance its applicability to investigate the late time behavior of flows on rotating surfaces, i.e., that of the pla…
A semi-implicit fractional-step method that uses a staggered node layout and radial basis function-finite differences (RBF-FD) to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is developed. Polyharmonic splines (PHS) with polynomial augmentation (PHS+poly) are used to construct the global differentiation matrices. A systematic parameter study identifies a combination of stencil size, PHS exponent, and polynomial degree that minimizes the truncation error for a wave-like test function on scattered nodes. Classical modified wavenumber analysis is extended to RBF-FDs on heterogeneous node dist…
Although the Navier-Stokes equation (NSE) is derived under angular-momentum conservation (AMC), numerical simulation methods often lack it. Here, we reveal that AMC violations result from implementation of the degenerated viscous terms of NSE. To maintain AMC, these degenerated terms must be separately integrated in accordance with their stress origins. As observed in particle-based hydrodynamics methods, the violation causes artificial rotations in multi-component fluids with different viscosities. At the interface between two fluids or with a mobile solid object, AMC must be satisfied, where…
We investigate novel fitted finite element approximations for two-phase Navier--Stokes flow. In particular, we consider both Eulerian and Arbitrary Lagrangian--Eulerian (ALE) finite element formulations. The moving interface is approximated with the help of parametric piecewise linear finite element functions. The bulk mesh is fitted to the interface approximation, so that standard bulk finite element spaces can be used throughout. The meshes describing the discrete interface in general do not deteriorate in time, which means that in numerical simulations a smoothing or a remeshing of the inte…
We present a detailed description and verification of a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DG) for the multi-component chemically reacting compressible Navier-Stokes equations that retains the desirable properties of DG, namely discrete conservation and high-order accuracy in smooth regions of the flow. Pressure equilibrium between adjacent elements is maintained through the consistent evaluation of the thermodynamics model and the resulting weak form, as well as the proper choice of nodal basis. As such, the discretization does not generate unphysical pressure oscillations in smoot…
High-order methods and hybrid turbulence models have independently shown promise as means of decreasing the computational cost of scale-resolving simulations. The objective of this work is to develop the combination of these methods and analyze the effects of high-order discretizations on hybrid turbulence models, particularly with respect the optimal model parameters and the relative accuracy benefits compared to approaches such as under-resolved direct numerical simulation (URDNS). We employ the Partially-Averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) approach using the flux reconstruction scheme on the flow…
This paper describes the total energy formulation of the compressible reacting Navier-Stokes equations which is solved numerically using a fully conservative discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DG). Previous applications of DG to the compressible reacting Navier-Stokes equations required nonconservative fluxes or stabilization methods in order to suppress unphysical oscillations in pressure that led to the failure of simple test cases. In this paper, we demonstrate that material interfaces with a temperature discontinuity result in numerical unphysical pressure oscillations if the sp…
Permeability estimation of porous media from direct solving Navier--Stokes equation has a wide spectrum of applications in petroleum industry. In this paper, we utilize a pressure-correction projection algorithm in conjunction with the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for space discretization to build an incompressible Navier--Stokes simulator and to use this simulator to calculate permeability of real rock sample. The proposed method is accurate, numerically robust, and exhibits the potential for tackling realistic problems.
A novel numerical scheme including time and spatial discretization is offered for coupled Cahn-Hilliard and Navier-Stokes governing equation sys-tem in this paper. Variable densities and viscosities are considered in the nu-merical scheme. By introducing an intermediate velocity in both Cahn-Hilliard equation and momentum equation, the scheme can keep discrete energy law. A decouple approach based on pressure stabilization is implemented to solve the Navier-Stokes part, while the stabilization or convex splitting method is adopt-ed for the Cahn-Hilliard part. This novel scheme is totally decou…
This article aims at developing a high order pressure-based solver for the solution of the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes system at all Mach numbers. We propose a cell-centered discretization of the governing equations that splits the fluxes into a fast and a slow scale part, that are treated implicitly and explicitly, respectively. A novel semi-implicit discretization is proposed for the kinetic energy as well as the enthalpy fluxes in the energy equation, hence avoiding any need of iterative solvers. The implicit discretization yields an elliptic equation on the pressure that can be solved fo…
In this paper we consider a conservative discretization of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. We propose an extension of Arakawa's classical finite difference scheme for fluid flow in the vorticity-stream function formulation to a high order discontinuous Galerkin approximation. In addition, we show numerical simulations that demonstrate the accuracy of the scheme and verify the conservation properties, which are essential for long time integration. Furthermore, we discuss the massively parallel implementation on graphic processing units.
The Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes (CHNS) system provides a computationally tractable model that can be used to effectively capture interfacial dynamics in two-phase fluid flows. In this work, we present a semi-implicit, projection-based finite element framework for solving the CHNS system. We use a projection-based semi-implicit time discretization for the Navier-Stokes equation and a fully-implicit time discretization for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. We use a conforming continuous Galerkin (cG) finite element method in space equipped with a residual-based variational multiscale (RBVMS) formulati…
This paper introduces a formally second-order direction-splitting method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq system in a spherical shell region. The equations are solved on overset Yin-Yang grids, combined with spherical coordinate transforms. This approach allows to avoid the singularities at the poles and keeps the grid size relatively uniform. The downside is that the spherical shell is subdivided into two equally sized, overlapping subdomains that requires the use of Schwarz-type iterations. The temporal second order accuracy is achieved via an Artificial Compressibilit…
We investigate theoretically and numerically the use of the Least-Squares Finite-element method (LSFEM) to approach data-assimilation problems for the steady-state, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our LSFEM discretization is based on a stress-velocity-pressure (S-V-P) first-order formulation, using discrete counterparts of the Sobolev spaces $H({\rm div}) \times H^1 \times L^2$ respectively. Resolution of the system is via minimization of a least-squares functional representing the magnitude of the residual of the equations. A simple and immediate approach to extend this solver to data…
Recently, relaxation methods have been developed to guarantee the preservation of a single global functional of the solution of an ordinary differential equation. Here, we generalize this approach to guarantee local entropy inequalities for finitely many convex functionals (entropies) and apply the resulting methods to the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Based on the unstructured $hp$-adaptive SSDC framework of entropy conservative or dissipative semidiscretizations using summation-by-parts and simultaneous-approximation-term operators, we develop the first discretizations for …
This paper presents robust discontinuous Galerkin methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on moving meshes. High-order accurate arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulations are proposed in a unified framework for both monolithic as well as projection or splitting-type Navier-Stokes solvers. The framework is flexible, allows implicit and explicit formulations of the convective term, and adaptive time-stepping. The Navier-Stokes equations with ALE transport term are solved on the deformed geometry storing one instance of the mesh that is updated from one time step to the next. Discr…
This study proposes an algorithm for modeling compressible flows in spherical shells in nearly incompressible and weakly compressible regimes based on an implicit direction splitting approach. The method retains theoretically expected convergence rates and remains stable for extremely small values of the characteristic Mach number. The staggered spatial discretization on the MAC stencil, commonly used in numerical methods for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, was found to be convenient for the discretization of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations written in the non-conservative form…
