This paper presents robust discontinuous Galerkin methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on moving meshes. High-order accurate arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulations are proposed in a unified framework for both monolithic as well as projection or splitting-type Navier-Stokes solvers. The framework is flexible, allows implicit and explicit formulations of the convective term, and adaptive time-stepping. The Navier-Stokes equations with ALE transport term are solved on the deformed geometry storing one instance of the mesh that is updated from one time step to the next. Discretization in space is applied to the time discrete equations so that all weak forms and mass matrices are evaluated at the end of the current time step. This design ensures that the proposed formulations fulfill the geometric conservation law automatically, as is shown theoretically and demonstrated numerically by the example of the free-stream preservation test. We discuss the peculiarities related to the imposition of boundary conditions in intermediate steps of projection-type methods and the ingredients needed to preserve high-order accuracy. We show numerically that the formulations proposed in this work maintain the formal order of accuracy of the Navier-Stokes solvers. Moreover, we demonstrate robustness and accuracy for under-resolved turbulent flows.
We present a high-order accurate reconstructed discontinuous Galerkin (rDG) method in arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation, for solving two-dimensional compressible flows on moving and deforming domains with unstructured curved meshes. The Taylor basis functions in use are defined on the time-dependent domain, on which also the integration and computations are performed. A third order ESDIRK3 scheme is employed for the temporal integration. The Geometric Conservation Law (GCL) is satisfied by modifying the grid velocity terms on the right-hand side of the discretized equations at Ga…
Permeability estimation of porous media from direct solving Navier--Stokes equation has a wide spectrum of applications in petroleum industry. In this paper, we utilize a pressure-correction projection algorithm in conjunction with the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for space discretization to build an incompressible Navier--Stokes simulator and to use this simulator to calculate permeability of real rock sample. The proposed method is accurate, numerically robust, and exhibits the potential for tackling realistic problems.
Both compressible and incompressible Navier-Stokes solvers can be used and are used to solve incompressible turbulent flow problems. In the compressible case, the Mach number is then considered as a solver parameter that is set to a small value, $\mathrm{M}\approx 0.1$, in order to mimic incompressible flows. This strategy is widely used for high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present work raises the question regarding the computational efficiency of compressible DG solvers as compared to a genuinely incompressible formulation. Our…
We present a new method for approximating solutions to the incompressible miscible displacement problem in porous media. At the discrete level, the coupled nonlinear system has been split into two linear systems that are solved sequentially. The method is based on a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the Darcy flow, which produces a mass--conservative flux approximation, and a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the transport equation. The resulting method is high order accurate. Due to the implicit treatment of the system of partial differential equations, we observe co…
We investigate novel fitted finite element approximations for two-phase Navier--Stokes flow. In particular, we consider both Eulerian and Arbitrary Lagrangian--Eulerian (ALE) finite element formulations. The moving interface is approximated with the help of parametric piecewise linear finite element functions. The bulk mesh is fitted to the interface approximation, so that standard bulk finite element spaces can be used throughout. The meshes describing the discrete interface in general do not deteriorate in time, which means that in numerical simulations a smoothing or a remeshing of the inte…
In this paper the author reviews a version of the global Galerkin that was developed and applied in a series of earlier publications. The method is based on divergence-free basis functions satisfying all the linear and homogeneous boundary conditions. The functions are defined as linear superpositions of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second klinds that are combined into divergence free vectors. The description and explanations of treatment of boundary conditions inhomogeneities and singularities are given. Possible implementation for steady state solvers, path-continuation, stabil…
We propose a new Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. The method is designed as a generalization of the semi-Lagrangian (SL) DG method for linear advection problems proposed in [J. Sci. Comput. 73: 514-542, 2017], which is formulated based on an adjoint problem and tracing upstream cells by tracking characteristics curves highly accurately. In the SLDG method, depending on the velocity field, upstream cells could be of arbitrary shape. Thus, a more sophisticated approximation to sides of the upstream cells is required to get high order approximation. For example, quadra…
In this paper we consider a conservative discretization of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. We propose an extension of Arakawa's classical finite difference scheme for fluid flow in the vorticity-stream function formulation to a high order discontinuous Galerkin approximation. In addition, we show numerical simulations that demonstrate the accuracy of the scheme and verify the conservation properties, which are essential for long time integration. Furthermore, we discuss the massively parallel implementation on graphic processing units.
In this work we exploit agglomeration based $h$-multigrid preconditioners to speed-up the iterative solution of discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations. As a distinctive feature $h$-coarsened mesh sequences are generated by recursive agglomeration of a fine grid, admitting arbitrarily unstructured grids of complex domains, and agglomeration based discontinuous Galerkin discretizations are employed to deal with agglomerated elements of coarse levels. Both the expense of building coarse grid operators and the performance of the resulting multigrid iterati…
The present paper addresses the numerical solution of turbulent flows with high-order discontinuous Galerkin methods for discretizing the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The efficiency of high-order methods when applied to under-resolved problems is an open issue in literature. This topic is carefully investigated in the present work by the example of the 3D Taylor-Green vortex problem. Our implementation is based on a generic high-performance framework for matrix-free evaluation of finite element operators with one of the best realizations currently known. We present a methodology to …
We present a solution to the conservation form (Eulerian form) of the quantum hydrodynamic equations which arise in chemical dynamics by implementing a mixed/discontinuous Galerkin (MDG) finite element numerical scheme. We show that this methodology is stable, showing good accuracy and a remarkable scale invariance in its solution space. In addition the MDG method is robust, adapting well to various initial-boundary value problems of particular significance in a range of physical and chemical applications. We further show explicitly how to recover the Lagrangian frame (or pathline) solutions.
A parametric reduced order model based on proper orthogonal decomposition with Galerkin projection has been developed and applied for the modeling of heat transport in T-junction pipes which are widely found in nuclear power plants. Thermal mixing of different temperature coolants in T-junction pipes leads to temperature fluctuations and this could potentially cause thermal fatigue in the pipe walls. The novelty of this paper is the development of a parametric ROM considering the three dimensional, incompressible, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the heat transport equation in a f…
A well-established numerical approach to solve the Navier--Stokes equations for incompressible fluids is Chorin's projection method, whereby the fluid velocity is explicitly updated, and then an elliptic problem for the pressure is solved, which is used to orthogonally project the velocity field to maintain the incompressibility constraint. In this paper, we develop a mathematical correspondence between Newtonian fluids in the incompressible limit and hypo-elastoplastic solids in the slow, quasi-static limit. Using this correspondence, we formulate a new fixed-grid, Eulerian numerical method f…
We present a new method for simulating incompressible immiscible two-phase flow in porous media. The semi-implicit method decouples the wetting phase pressure and saturation equations. The equations are discretized using a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method. The proposed method is of high order, conserves global/local mass balance, and the number of globally coupled degrees of freedom is significantly reduced compared to standard interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods. Several numerical examples illustrate the accuracy and robustness of the method. These examples include…
In this paper we present energy-conserving, mixed discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and continuous Galerkin (CG) schemes for the solution of a broad class of physical systems described by Hamiltonian evolution equations. These systems often arise in fluid mechanics (incompressible Euler equations) and plasma physics (Vlasov--Poisson equations and gyrokinetic equations), for example. The dynamics is described by a distribution function that evolves given a Hamiltonian and a corresponding Poisson bracket operator, with the Hamiltonian itself computed from field equations. Hamiltonian systems have seve…
The aim of this paper is to compare a hyperelastic with a hypoelastic model describing the Eulerian dynamics of solids in the context of non-linear elastoplastic deformations. Specifically, we consider the well-known hypoelastic Wilkins model, which is compared against a hyperelastic model based on the work of Godunov and Romenski. First, we discuss some general conceptual differences between the two approaches. Second, a detailed study of both models is proposed, where differences are made evident at the aid of deriving a hypoelastic-type model corresponding to the hyperelastic model and a pa…
Soft solids in fluids find wide range of applications in science and engineering, especially in the study of biological tissues and membranes. In this study, an Eulerian finite volume approach has been developed to simulate fully resolved incompressible hyperelastic solids immersed in a fluid. We have adopted the recently developed reference map technique (RMT) by Valkov et. al (J. Appl. Mech., 82, 2015) and assessed multiple improvements for this approach. These modifications maintain the numerical robustness of the solver and allow the simulations without any artificial viscosity in the solid…
The purpose of the present paper is to compare two semi-Lagrangian methods in the context of the four-dimensional Vlasov--Poisson equation. More specifically, our goal is to compare the performance of the more recently developed semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin scheme with the de facto standard in Eulerian Vlasov simulation (i.e. using cubic spline interpolation). To that end, we perform simulations for nonlinear Landau damping and a two-stream instability and provide benchmarks for the SeLaLib and sldg codes (both on a workstation and using MPI on a cluster). We find that the semi-Lagra…

In this paper we first review the development of high order ADER finite volume and ADER discontinuous Galerkin schemes on fixed and moving meshes, since their introduction in 1999 by Toro et al. We show the modern variant of ADER based on a space-time predictor-corrector formulation in the context of ADER discontinuous Galerkin schemes with a posteriori subcell finite volume limiter on fixed and moving grids, as well as on space-time adaptive Cartesian AMR meshes. We then present and discuss the unified symmetric hyperbolic and thermodynamically compatible (SHTC) formulation of continuum mecha…
We present a hybrid particle/grid approach for simulating incompressible fluids on collocated velocity grids. We interchangeably use particle and grid representations of transported quantities to balance efficiency and accuracy. A novel Backward Semi-Lagrangian method is derived to improve accuracy of grid based advection. Our approach utilizes the implicit formula associated with solutions of Burgers' equation. We solve this equation using Newton's method enabled by $C^1$ continuous grid interpolation. We enforce incompressibility over collocated, rather than staggered grids. Our projection t…
