Given an edge-coloured graph, we say that a subgraph is rainbow if all of its edges have different colours. Let $\operatorname{ex}(n,H,$rainbow-$F)$ denote the maximal number of copies of $H$ that a properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices can contain if it has no rainbow subgraph isomorphic to $F$. We determine the order of magnitude of $\operatorname{ex}(n,C_s,$rainbow-$C_t)$ for all $s,t$ with $s\not =3$. In particular, we answer a question of Gerbner, Mészáros, Methuku and Palmer by showing that $\operatorname{ex}(n,C_{2k},$rainbow-$C_{2k})$ is $Θ(n^{k-1})$ if $k\geq 3$ and $Θ(n^2)$ if $k=2$. We also determine the order of magnitude of $\operatorname{ex}(n,P_\ell,$rainbow-$C_{2k})$ for all $k,\ell\geq 2$, where $P_\ell$ denotes the path with $\ell$ edges.
The rainbow Turán number, a natural extension of the well studied traditional Turán number, was introduced in 2007 by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. The rainbow Turán number of a graph $H$, $ex^{*}(n,H)$, is the largest number of edges for an $n$ vertex graph $G$ which can be properly edge colored with no rainbow $H$ subgraph. We explore the reduction method for finding upper bounds on rainbow Turán numbers, and use this to inform results for the rainbow Turán numbers of double stars, caterpillars, and perfect binary trees. In addition, we define $k$-unique colorings and the related …
An edge-coloured path is rainbow if its edges have distinct colours. For a connected graph $G$, the rainbow connection number (resp. strong rainbow connection number) of $G$ is the minimum number of colours required to colour the edges of $G$ so that, any two vertices of $G$ are connected by a rainbow path (resp. rainbow geodesic). These two graph parameters were introduced by Chartrand, Johns, McKeon and Zhang in 2008. Krivelevich and Yuster generalised this concept to the vertex-coloured setting. Similarly, Liu, Mestre and Sousa introduced the version which involves total-colourings. Dorbec,…
Let $F$ be a fixed graph. The rainbow Turán number of $F$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices that has a proper edge-coloring with no rainbow copy of $F$ (where a rainbow copy of $F$ means a copy of $F$ all of whose edges have different colours). The systematic study of such problems was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. In this paper, we show that the rainbow Turán number of a path with $k+1$ edges is less than $\left(\frac{9k}{7}+2\right) n$, improving an earlier estimate of Johnston, Palmer and Sarkar.
An edge-colored graph is rainbow if all its edges are colored with distinct colors. For a fixed graph $H$, the rainbow Turán number $\mathrm{ex}^{\ast}(n,H)$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with no rainbow copy of $H$. We study the rainbow Turán number of even cycles, and prove that for every fixed $\varepsilon > 0$, there is a constant $C(\varepsilon)$ such that every properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with at least $C(\varepsilon) n^{1 + \varepsilon}$ edges contains a rainbow cycle of even length at most $2 \lceil \frac{\ln …
Alon and Shikhelman initiated the systematic study of the following generalized Turán problem: for fixed graphs $H$ and $F$ and an integer $n$, what is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph? An edge-colored graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colors. The rainbow Turán number of $F$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán problems was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. Motivated by the above problems, we study the followi…
Given graphs $F$ and $H$, the generalized rainbow Turán number $\text{ex}(n,F,\text{rainbow-}H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph with a proper edge-coloring that contains no rainbow copy of $H$. B. Janzer determined the order of magnitude of $\text{ex}(n,C_s,\text{rainbow-}C_t)$ for all $s\geq 4$ and $t\geq 3$, and a recent result of O. Janzer implied that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. We prove the corresponding upper bound for the remaining cases, showing that $\text{ex}(n,C_3,\text{rainbow-}C_{2k+1})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This matches the known…
An edge-colored graph $F$ is rainbow if each edge of $F$ has a unique color. The rainbow Turán number $ex^*(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán numbers was introduced by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, and Verstraëte in 2007. In this paper we focus on $ex^*(n,P_5)$. While several recent papers have investigated rainbow Turán numbers for $\ell$-edge paths $P_{\ell}$, exact results have only been obtained for $\ell < 5$, and $P_5$ represents one of the smallest cases left open i…
We show that for any integer $t\geq 2$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with more than $n^{1+o(1)}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_t$. Note that this bound on the number of edges is sharp up to the $o(1)$ error term. This is a rainbow analogue of some classical results on clique subdivisions and extends some results on rainbow Turán numbers. Our method relies on the framework introduced by Sudakov and Tomon[2020] which we adapt to find robust expanders in the coloured setting.
An edge-colored graph is said to contain a rainbow-$F$ if it contains $F$ as a subgraph and every edge of $F$ is a distinct color. The problem of maximizing edges among $n$-vertex properly edge-colored graphs not containing a rainbow-$F$, known as the rainbow Turán problem, was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We investigate a variation of this problem with the additional restriction that the graph is planar, and we denote the corresponding extremal number by $\ex_{\p}^*(n,F)$. In particular, we determine $\ex_{\p}^*(n,P_5)$, where $P_5$ denotes the $5$-vertex path.
An edge-colored graph $F$ is {\it rainbow} if each edge of $F$ has a unique color. The {\it rainbow Turán number} $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán numbers was introduced by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, and Verstraëte. Johnson and Rombach introduced the following rainbow-version of generalized Turán problems: for fixed graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H,F)$ denote the maximum number of rainbow copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex properly edge-colored gra…
For a fixed graph $F$, we would like to determine the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain a {\emph rainbow copy} of $F$, that is, a copy of $F$ all of whose edges receive a different color. This maximum, denoted by $ex^*(n,F)$, is the {\emph rainbow Turán number} of $F$, and its systematic study was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte in 2007. We determine $ex^*(n,F)$ exactly when $F$ is a forest of stars, and give bounds on $ex^*(n,F)$ when $F$ is a path with $k$ edges, disproving a conjecture in Keevash et al.
Considering a natural generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem, we prove that for any fixed positive integers $r,s$ with $r<s$, there are graphs on $n$ vertices containing $n^{r}e^{-O(\sqrt{\log{n}})}=n^{r-o(1)}$ copies of $K_s$ such that any $K_r$ is contained in at most one $K_s$. We also give bounds for the generalized rainbow Turán problem $\operatorname{ex}(n, H,$rainbow-$F)$ when $F$ is complete. In particular, we answer a question of Gerbner, Mészáros, Methuku and Palmer, showing that there are properly edge-coloured graphs on $n$ vertices with $n^{r-1-o(1)}$ copies of $K_r$ such t…
For a fixed graph $F$, we would like to determine the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain a rainbow copy of $F$, that is, a copy of $F$ all of whose edges receive a different color. This maximum, denoted by $ex^*(n, F)$, is the rainbow Turán number of $F$. We show that $ex^*(n,P_k)\geq \frac{k}{2}n + O(1)$ where $P_k$ is a path on $k\geq 3$ edges, generalizing a result by Maamoun and Meyniel and by Johnston, Palmer and Sarkar. We show similar bounds for brooms on $2^s-1$ edges and diameter $\leq 10$ and a few other caterpillars of sma…
The rainbow Turán number $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We prove that for any integer $k\geq 2$, $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This is tight and establishes a conjecture of Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We use the same method to prove several other conjectures in various topics. First, we prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn(\log n)^4$ edges contains a rainbow cycle. …
We study the following problem. How many distinct copies of $H$ can an $n$-vertex graph $G$ have, if $G$ does not contain a rainbow $F$, that is, a copy of $F$ where each edge is contained in a different copy of $H$? The case $H=K_r$ is equivalent to the Turán problem for Berge hypergraphs, which has attracted several researchers recently. We also explore the connection of our problem to the so-called generalized Turán problems. We obtain several exact results. In the particularly interesting symmetric case where $H=F$, we completely solve the case $F$ is the 3-edge path, and asymptitically so…
We introduce a notion of rainbow saturation and the corresponding rainbow saturation number. This is the saturation version of the rainbow Turán numbers whose systematic study was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, and Verstraëte. We give examples of graphs for which the rainbow saturation number is bounded away from the ordinary saturation number. This includes all complete graphs $K_n$ for $n\geq 4$, and several bipartite graphs. It is notable that there are non-bipartite graphs for which this is the case, as this does not happen when it comes to the rainbow extremal number versus the tr…

A subgraph of an edge-coloured complete graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colours. In 1980 Hahn conjectured that every properly edge-coloured complete graph $K_n$ has a rainbow Hamiltonian path. Although this conjecture turned out to be false, it was widely believed that such a colouring always contains a rainbow cycle of length almost $n$. In this paper, improving on several earlier results, we confirm this by proving that every properly edge-coloured $K_n$ has a rainbow cycle of length $n-O(n^{3/4})$. One of the main ingredients of our proof, which is of independent int…
A spanning tree of an edge-colored graph is rainbow provided that each of its edges receives a distinct color. In this paper we consider the natural extremal problem of maximizing and minimizing the number of rainbow spanning trees in a graph $G$. Such a question clearly needs restrictions on the colorings to be meaningful. For edge-colorings using $n-1$ colors and without rainbow cycles, known in the literature as JL-colorings, there turns out to be a particularly nice way of counting the rainbow spanning trees and we solve this problem completely for JL-colored complete graphs $K_n$ and comp…
Given integers $r \geq 2$, $k \geq 3$ and $2 \leq s \leq \binom{k}{2}$, and a graph $G$, we consider $r$-edge-colorings of $G$ with no copy of a complete graph $K_k$ on $k$ vertices where $s$ or more colors appear, which are called $\mathcal{P}_{k,s}$-free $r$-colorings. We show that, for large $n$ and $r \geq r_0(k,s)$, the $(k-1)$-partite Turán graph $T_{k-1}(n)$ on $n$ vertices yields the largest number of $\mathcal{P}_{k,s}$-free $r$-colorings among all $n$-vertex graphs, and that it is the unique graph with this property.
A path in an edge-colored graph is rainbow if no two edges of it are colored the same, and the graph is rainbow-connected if there is a rainbow path between each pair of its vertices. The minimum number of colors needed to rainbow-connect a graph $G$ is the rainbow connection number of $G$, denoted by $\text{rc}(G)$. A simple way to rainbow-connect a graph $G$ is to color the edges of a spanning tree with distinct colors and then re-use any of these colors to color the remaining edges of $G$. This proves that $\text{rc}(G) \le |V(G)|-1$. We ask whether there is a stronger connection between tr…
We describe a method that we believe may be foundational for a comprehensive theory of generalised Turan problems. The cornerstone of our approach is a quasirandom counting lemma for quasirandom hypergraphs, which extends the standard counting lemma by not only counting copies of a particular configuration but also showing that these copies are evenly distributed. We demonstrate the power of the method by proving a conjecture of Mubayi on the codegree threshold of the Fano plane, that any 3-graph on n vertices for which every pair of vertices is contained in more than n/2 edges must contain a …
For two graphs $G$ and $H$, write $G \stackrel{\mathrm{rbw}}{\longrightarrow} H$ if $G$ has the property that every {\sl proper} colouring of its edges yields a {\sl rainbow} copy of $H$. We study the thresholds for such so-called {\sl anti-Ramsey} properties in randomly perturbed dense graphs, which are unions of the form $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p)$, where $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with edge-density at least $d$, and $d$ is a constant that does not depend on $n$. Our results in this paper, combined with our results in a companion paper, determine the threshold for the property $G \cup \mathbb{G…
We call a $4$-cycle in $K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, n_{3}}$ multipartite, denoted by $C_{4}^{\text{multi}}$, if it contains at least one vertex in each part of $K_{n_{1}, n_{2}, n_{3}}$. The Turán number $\text{ex}(K_{n_{1},n_{2},n_{3}}, C_{4}^{\text{multi}})$ $\bigg($ respectively, $\text{ex}(K_{n_{1},n_{2},n_{3}},\{C_{3}, C_{4}^{\text{multi}}\})$ $\bigg)$ is the maximum number of edges in a graph $G\subseteq K_{n_{1},n_{2},n_{3}}$ such that $G$ contains no $C_{4}^{\text{multi}}$ $\bigg($ respectively, $G$ contains neither $C_{3}$ nor $C_{4}^{\text{multi}}$ $\bigg)$. We call a $C^{multi}_4$ rainbow if a…
Motivated by anti-Ramsey numbers introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1975, we study the anti-Ramsey problem when host graphs are plane triangulations. Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. Analogous to anti-Ramsey numbe…
An edge-colored graph $G$ is $k$-color connected if, between each pair of vertices, there exists a path using at least $k$ different colors. The $k$-color connection number of $G$, denoted by $cc_{k}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to color the edges of $G$ so that $G$ is $k$-color connected. First, we prove that let $H$ be a subdivision of a connected graph $G$, then $cc_{k}(H)\leq cc_{k}(G)$. Second, we give sufficient conditions to guarantee that $cc_{k}(G)=k$ in terms of minimum degree and the number of edges for 2-connected graphs. As a byproduct, we show that almost all graph…
We study Ramsey-type problems in Gallai-colorings. Given a graph $G$ and an integer $k\ge1$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $gr_k(K_3,G)$ is the least positive integer $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains either a rainbow triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. It turns out that $gr_k(K_3, G)$ behaves more nicely than the classical Ramsey number $r_k(G)$. However, finding exact values of $gr_k (K_3, G)$ is far from trivial. In this paper, we prove that $gr_k(K_3, C_9)= 4\cdot 2^k+1$ for all $k\ge1$. This new result provides partial evidence fo…
A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is \textit{singular} if the vertices of $H$ either have the same degree in $G$ or have pairwise distinct degrees in $G$. The largest number of edges of a graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a singular copy of $H$ is denoted by $T_S(n,H)$. Caro and Tuza [Theory and Applications of Graphs, 6 (2019), 1--32] obtained the asymptotics of $T_S(n,H)$ for every graph $H$, but determined the exact value of this function only in the case $H=K_3$ and $n\equiv 2$ (mod 4). We determine $T_S(n,K_3)$ for all $n\equiv 0$ (mod 4) and $n\equiv 1$ (mod 4), and also $T_S(n,K_{r+1})$ f…
