Recently, the possibility to tune the critical current of conventional metallic superconductors via electrostatic gating was shown in wires, Josephson weak-links and superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions. Here we exploit such a technique to demonstrate a gate-controlled vanadium-based Dayem nano-bridge operated as a \emph{half-wave} rectifier at $3$ K. Our devices exploit the gate-driven modulation of the critical current of the Josephson junction, and the resulting steep variation of its normal-state resistance, to convert an AC signal applied to the gate electrode into a DC one across the junction. All-metallic superconducting gated rectifiers could provide the enabling technology to realize tunable photon detectors and diodes useful for superconducting electronics circuitry.
We report on the fabrication and characterization of microSQUID devices based on nanoscale vanadium/copper/vanadium Josephson weak links. Magnetically driven quantum interference patterns have been measured for temperatures in the 0.24 - 2 K range. As magnetometers, these devices obtain flux-to-voltage transfer function values as high as 450 microV/Phi_0 leading to promising magnetic flux resolution Phi_N < 3 microPhi_0 / Hz^(1/2), being here limited by the room temperature preamplification stage. Significant improvements in the flux noise performance figures, which are already competitive wit…
Control of the Josephson current by varying a gate current has recently been demonstrated in both 4-terminal and 3-terminal junctions. We show that, when the the gates are weakly coupled to the Josephson junction, the Josephson current versus gate current (or versus gate voltage) relation is the same for both the 4- and 3- terminal geometries. At low temperature, the supercurrent switches abruptly as a function of the gate voltage, but only slowly as a function of the gate current.
Coherent operation of gate-voltage-controlled hybrid transmon qubits (gatemons) based on semiconductor nanowires was recently demonstrated. Here we experimentally investigate the anharmonicity in epitaxial InAs-Al Josephson junctions, a key parameter for their use as a qubit. Anharmonicity is found to be reduced by roughly a factor of two compared to conventional metallic junctions, and dependent on gate voltage. Experimental results are consistent with a theoretical model, indicating that Josephson coupling is mediated by a small number of highly transmitting modes in the semiconductor juncti…
We study the normal state conductance and the Josephson current in a superconductor-2DEG-superconductor structure where the size/shape of the 2DEG-region can be modified by an additional side-gate electrode. The considered transport properties follow from the retarded Green function which we compute by employing a tight-binding-like representation of the Hamiltonian in the 2DEG region. Our model studies offer a qualitative demonstration of the recently observed effects caused by side-gate modulation.
Carbon nanotube (CNT) Josephson junctions in the open quantum dot limit exhibit superconducting switching currents which can be controlled with a gate electrode. Shapiro voltage steps can be observed under radiofrequency current excitations, with a damping of the phase dynamics that strongly depends on the gate voltage. These measurements are described by a standard RCSJ model showing that the switching currents from the superconducting to the normal state are close to the critical current of the junction. The effective dynamical capacitance of the nanotube junction is found to be strongly gat…
Josephson junctions with three or more superconducting leads have been predicted to exhibit topological effects in the presence of few conducting modes within the interstitial normal material. Such behavior, of relevance for topologically-protected quantum bits, would lead to specific transport features measured between terminals, with topological phase transitions occurring as a function of phase and voltage bias. Although conventional, two-terminal Josephson junctions have been studied extensively, multi-terminal devices have received relatively little attention to date. Motivated in part by…
In a Josephson phase qubit the coherent manipulations of the computational states are achieved by modulating an applied ac current, typically in the microwave range. In this work we show that it is possible to find optimal modulations of the bias current to achieve high-fidelity gates. We apply quantum optimal control theory to determine the form of the pulses and study in details the case of a NOT-gate. To test the efficiency of the optimized pulses in an experimental setup, we also address the effect of possible imperfections in the pulses shapes, the role of off-resonance elements in the Ha…
We measure the non-dissipative supercurrent in a single InAs self-assembled quantum dot (QD) coupled to superconducting leads. The QD occupation is both tuned by a back-gate electrode and lateral side-gate. The geometry of the side-gate allows tuning of the QD-lead tunnel coupling in a region of constant electron number with appropriate orbital state. Using the side-gate effect we study the competition between Kondo correlations and superconducting pairing on the QD, observing a decrease in the supercurrent when the Kondo temperature is reduced below the superconducting energy gap in qualitati…
We demonstrate top-gate tunable Josephson junction like behavior in the two dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ interface. A combination of global back-gating and local top-gating is used to define the junctions, providing an efficient way for much finer spatial control over the properties of the interface, as compared to back-gating alone. The variation of critical currents and zero bias resistances with temperature shows that the junctions behave like short, overdamped weak links. This technique could be an important tool to illuminate the nature of superconductivity in the L…
We present a study of a graphene-based Josephson junction with dedicated side gates carved from the same sheet of graphene as the junction itself. These side gates are highly efficient, and allow us to modulate carrier density along either edge of the junction in a wide range. In particular, in magnetic fields in the $1-2$ Tesla range, we are able to populate the next Landau level, resulting in Hall plateaus with conductance that differs from the bulk filling factor. When counter-propagating quantum Hall edge states are introduced along either edge, we observe supercurrent localized along that…
We report on the first realization of Nb-based \textit{all-metallic} gated Dayem nano-bridge field-effect transistors (Nb-FETs). These Josephson devices operate up to a temperature of $\sim 3$ K, and exhibit full suppression of the supercurrent thanks to the application of a control gate voltage. The dependence of the kinetic inductance and of the transconductance on gate voltage promises a performance already on par with so far realized metallic Josephson transistors, and let to foresee the implementation of a superconducting digital logic based on Nb-FETs. We conclude by showing the practica…
We demonstrate an Al superconducting quantum interference device in which the Josephson junctions are implemented through gate-controlled proximitized Cu mesoscopic weak-links. The latter behave analogously to genuine superconducting metals in terms of the response to electrostatic gating, and provide a good performance in terms of current-modulation visibility. We show that, through the application of a static gate voltage, we are able to modify the interferometer current-flux relation in a fashion which seems compatible with the introduction of $π$-channels within the gated weak-link. Our re…
Dissipation is ubiquitous in quantum systems, and its interplay with fluctuations is critical to maintaining quantum coherence. We experimentally investigate the dissipation dynamics in single-walled carbon nanotubes coupled to superconductors. The voltage-current characteristics display gate-tunable hysteresis, with sizes that perfectly correlate with the normal state resistance RN, indicating the junction undergoes a periodic modulation between underdamped and overdamped regimes. Surprisingly, when a device's Fermi-level is tuned through a local conductance minimum, we observe a gate-control…
Josephson junctions made of closely-spaced conventional superconductors on the surface of 3D topological insulators have been proposed to host Andreev bound states (ABSs) which can include Majorana fermions. Here, we present an extensive study of the supercurrent carried by low energy ABSs in Nb/Bi$_2$Se$_3$/Nb Josephson junctions in various SQUIDs as we modulate the carrier density in the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ barriers through electrostatic top gates. As previously reported, we find a precipitous drop in the Josephson current at a critical value of the voltage applied to the top gate. This drop has be…
Motivated by recent experiments revealing superconductivity in MoS$_2$, we investigate the Josephson effect in the monolayer MoS$_2$ at the presence of an exchange splitting. We show that the supercurrent reversal known as $0-π$ transition can occur by varying the doping via gate voltages. This is in contrast to common superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor junctions in which successive $0-π$ transition take place with the variation of junction length or temperature. In fact for the case of MoS$_2$ we find that both the amplitude and the period of oscillations show a dependence on the dopin…
We theoretically investigate the mapping of the supercurrent distribution in a planar superconductor-normal-superconductor junction in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field via the scanning gate microscopy technique. We find that the distribution of counter-propagating supercurrents aligned in Josephson vortices can be mapped by the change of the critical current induced by the tip of the scanning probe, if the flux in the junction is set close to maxima of the Fraunhofer pattern. Instead, when the magnetic field drives the junction to a supercurrent minimum in the Fraunhofer pattern,…
Novel physical phenomena arising at the interface of complex oxide heterostructures offer exciting opportunities for the development of future electronic devices. Using the prototypical LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface as a model system, we employ a single-step lithographic process to realize gate tunable Josephson junctions through a combination of lateral confinement and local side gating. The action of the side gates is found to be comparable to that of a local back gate, constituting a robust and efficient way to control the properties of the interface at the nanoscale. We demonstrate that th…

The critical current response to an applied out-of-plane magnetic field in a Josephson junction provides insight into the uniformity of its current distribution. In Josephson junctions with semiconducting weak links, the carrier density and, therefore the overall current distribution could be modified electrostatically via metallic gates. Here, we show local control of the current distribution in an epitaxial Al-InAs Josephson junction equipped with five mini-gates. We demonstrate that not only can the junction width be electrostatically defined but also we can locally adjust the current profi…
Superconducting diodes are a recently-discovered quantum analogueue of classical diodes. The superconducting diode effect relies on the breaking of both time-reversal and inversion symmetry. As a result, the critical current of a superconductor can become dependent on the direction of the applied current. The combination of these ingredients naturally occurs in proximitized semiconductors under a magnetic field, which is also predicted to give rise to exotic physics such as topological superconductivity. In this work, we use InSb nanowires proximitized by Al to investigate the superconducting …
We investigate critical current noise in short ballistic graphene Josephson junctions in the open-circuit gate-voltage limit within the McWorther model. We find flicker noise in a wide frequency range and discuss the temperature dependence of the noise amplitude as a function of the doping level. At the charge neutrality point we find a singular temperature dependence $T^{-3}$, strikingly different from the linear dependence expected for short ballistic graphene Josephson junctions under fixed gate voltage.
We derive, via fourth order perturbation theory, an expression for the Josephson current through a gated interacting quantum dot. We analyze our expression for two different models of the superconductor-dot-superconductor (SDS) system. When the matrix elements connecting dot and leads are featureless constants, we compute the Josephson coupling J_c as a function of the gate voltage and Coulomb interaction. In the diffusive dot limit, we compute the probability distribution P(J_c) of Josephson couplings. In both cases, pi junction behavior (J_c < 0) is possible, and is not simply dependent on t…
In a standard Josephson junction the current is zero when the phase difference between the superconducting leads is zero. This condition is protected by parity and time-reversal symmetries. However, the combined presence of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field breaks these symmetries and can lead to a finite supercurrent even when the phase difference is zero. This is the so called anomalous Josephson effect -- the hallmark effect of superconducting spintronics --and can be characterized by the corresponding anomalous phase shift ($ϕ_0$). We report the observation of a tunable anomalous Jose…
Stochastic switching-current distribution in a graphene-based Josephson junction exhibits a crossover from the classical to quantum regime, revealing the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of a Josephson phase particle at low temperatures. Microwave spectroscopy measurements indicate a multi-photon absorption process occurring via discrete energy levels in washboard potential well. The crossover temperature for MQT and the quantized level spacing are controlled with the gate voltage, implying its potential application to gate-tunable superconducting quantum bits.
Graph states are a special kind of multiparticle entangled state with great potential for applications in quantum information technologies, especially in measurement-based quantum computers. These states cause significant reductions of the number of qubits needed for a given computation, leading to shorter execution time. Here we propose a simple scheme for generating such graph states by using special gate operations, i.e., control-phase and swap gate operations, inherent in superconducting quantum nanocircuits.
One-dimensional Majorana modes are predicated to form in Josephson junctions based on three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs). While observations of supercurrents in Josephson junctions made on bulk-insulating TI samples are recently reported, the Fraunhofer patters observed in such TI-based Josephson junctions, which sometimes present anomalous features, are still not well understood. Here we report our study of highly gate-tunable TI-based Josephson junctions made of one of the most bulk-insulating TI materials, BiSbTeSe2, and Al. The Fermi level can be tuned by gating across the Dira…

We report transport measurements on Josephson junctions consisting of Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) thin films contacted by superconducting Nb electrodes. For a device with junction length L = 134 nm, the critical supercurrent Ic can be modulated by an electrical gate which tunes the carrier type and density of the TI film. Ic can reach a minimum when the TI is near the charge neutrality regime with the Fermi energy lying close to the Dirac point of the surface state. In the p-type regime the Josephson current can be well described by a short ballistic junction model. In the n-type regime …
The discovery that a gate electrode suppresses the supercurrent in purely metallic systems is missing a complete physical understanding of the mechanisms at play. We here study the origin of this reduction in a Superconductor-Normal metal-Superconductor Josephson junction by performing, on the same device, a detailed investigation of the gate-dependent switching probability together with the local tunnelling spectroscopy of the normal metal. We demonstrate that high energy electrons leaking from the gate trigger the reduction of the critical current which is accompanied by an important broaden…
We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study of the proximity effect in InAs nanowires connected to superconducting electrodes. We fabricate and investigate devices with suspended gate-controlled nanowires and nonsuspended nanowires, with a broad range of lengths and normal-state resistances. We analyze the main features of the current-voltage characteristics: the Josephson current, excess current, and subgap current as functions of length, temperature, magnetic field, and gate voltage, and compare them with theory. The Josephson critical current for a short-length device, L = 30…
We have developed a quantitative theory of Cooper pair pumping in gated one-dimensional arrays of Josephson junctions. The pumping accuracy is limited by quantum tunneling of Cooper pairs out of the propagating potential well and by direct supercurrent flow through the array. Both corrections decrease exponentially with the number N of junctions in the array, but give a serious limitation of accuracy for any practical array. The supercurrent at resonant gate voltages decreases with N only as sin(v/N)/N, where v is the Josephson phase difference across the array.
In the past two years, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has emerged as a uniquely versatile experimental platform that combines metallic, superconducting, magnetic and insulating phases in a single crystal. In particular the ability to tune the superconducting state with a gate voltage opened up intriguing prospects for novel device functionality. Here we present the first demonstration of a device based on the interplay between two distinct phases in adjustable regions of a single magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene crystal. We electrostatically define the superconducting and insulating …
We study Josephson effect in graphene superconductor- barrier- superconductor junctions with short and wide barriers of thickness $d$ and width $L$, which can be created by applying a gate voltage $V_0$ across the barrier region. We show that Josephson current in such graphene junctions, in complete contrast to their conventional counterparts, is an oscillatory function of both the barrier width $d$ and the applied gate voltage $V_0$. We also demonstrate that in the thin barrier limit, where $V_0 \to \infty$ and $d \to 0$ keeping $V_0 d$ finite, such an oscillatory behavior can be understood i…
The superconducting proximity effect in semiconductor nanowires has recently enabled the study of new superconducting architectures, such as gate-tunable superconducting qubits and multiterminal Josephson junctions. As opposed to their metallic counterparts, the electron density in semiconductor nanosystems is tunable by external electrostatic gates providing a highly scalable and in-situ variation of the device properties. In addition, semiconductors with large $g$-factor and spin-orbit coupling have been shown to give rise to exotic phenomena in superconductivity, such as $φ_0$ Josephson jun…
Gate-tunable semiconductor-superconductor nanowires with superconducting leads form exotic Josephson junctions that are a highly desirable platform for two types of qubits: those with topological superconductivity (Majorana qubits) and those based on tunable anharmonicity (gatemon qubits). Controlling their behavior, however, requires understanding their electrostatic environment and electronic structure. Here we study gated InAs nanowires with epitaxial aluminum shells. By measuring current-phase relations (CPR) and comparing them with analytical and numerical calculations, we show that we ca…
The Hamiltonian operator for an unbiased array of Josephson junctions with gate voltages is constructed when only Cooper pair tunnelling and charging effects are taken into account. The supercurrent through the system and the pumped current induced by changing the gate voltages periodically are discussed with an emphasis on the inaccuracies in the Cooper pair pumping. Renormalisation of the Hamiltonian operator is used in order to reliably parametrise the effects due to inhomogeneity in the array and non-ideal gating sequences. The relatively simple model yields an explicit, testable predictio…
Josephson junctions with graphene as the weak link between superconductors have been intensely studied in recent years, with respect to both fundamental physics and potential applications. However, most of the previous work was based on mechanically exfoliated graphene, which is not compatible with mass production. Here we present our research using graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) as the weak link of Josephson junctions. We demonstrate that CVD-graphene-based Josephson junctions with Nb electrodes can work effectively without any thermal hysteresis from 1.5 K down to a base …
Gate-tunable Josephson junctions (JJs) are the backbone of superconducting classical and quantum computation. Typically, these systems exploit low charge concentration materials, and present technological diffculties limiting their scalability. Surprisingly, electric field modulation of supercurrent in metallic wires and JJs has been recently demonstrated. Here, we report the realization of titanium-based monolithic interferometers which allow tuning both JJs independently via voltage bias applied to capacitively-coupled electrodes. Our experiments demonstrate full control of the amplitude of …
We examine the phase diagram of an ordered one-dimensional Josephson array of small grains. The average grain charge in such a system can be tuned by means of gate voltage. At small grain-to-grain conductance, this system is strongly correlated because of the charge discreteness constraint (Coulomb blockade). At the gate voltages in the vicinity of the charge degeneracy points, we find new phases equivalent to a commensurate charge density wave and to a repulsive Luttinger liquid. The existence of these phases can be probed through a special dependence of the Josephson current on the gate volt…
