The Kuramoto model of coupled phase oscillators with inertia on Erdos-Renyi graphs is analyzed in this work. For a system with intrinsic frequencies sampled from a bimodal distribution we identify a variety of two cluster patterns and study their stability. To this end, we decompose the description of the cluster dynamics into two systems: one governing the (macro) dynamics of the centers of mass of the two clusters and the second governing the (micro) dynamics of individual oscillators inside each cluster. The former is a low-dimensional ODE whereas the latter is a system of two coupled Vlasov PDEs. Stability of the cluster dynamics depends on the stability of the low-dimensional group motion and on coherence of the oscillators in each group. We show that the loss of coherence in one of the clusters leads to the loss of stability of a two-cluster state and to formation of chimera states. The analysis of this paper can be generalized to cover states with more than two clusters and to coupled systems on W-random graphs. Our results apply to a model of a power grid with fluctuating sources.
The Kuramoto--Sakaguchi model is a modification of the well-known Kuramoto model that adds a phase-lag paramater, or "frustration" to a network of phase-coupled oscillators. The Kuramoto model is a flow of gradient type, but adding a phase-lag breaks the gradient structure, significantly complicating the analysis of the model. We present several results determining the stability of phase-locked configurations: the first of these gives a sufficient condition for stability, and the second a sufficient condition for instability. (In fact, the instability criterion gives a count, modulo 2, of the …
Inspired by the Deffuant and Hegselmann-Krause models of opinion dynamics, we extend the Kuramoto model to account for confidence bounds, i.e., vanishing interactions between pairs of oscillators when their phases differ by more than a certain value. We focus on Kuramoto oscillators with peaked, bimodal distribution of natural frequencies. We show that, in this case, the fixed-points for the extended model are made of certain numbers of independent clusters of oscillators, depending on the length of the confidence bound -- the interaction range -- and the distance between the two peaks of the …
We consider a variation of the Kuramoto model with dynamic coupling, where the coupling strengths are allowed to evolve in response to the phase difference between the oscillators, a model first considered by Ha, Noh and Park. In particular we study the stability of fixed points for this model. We demonstrate a somewhat surprising fact: namely that the fixed points of this model, as well as their stability, can be completely expressed in terms of the fixed points and stability of the analogous classical Kuramoto problem where the coupling strengths are fixed to a constant (the same for all edg…
We examine a modification of the Kuramoto model for phase oscillators coupled on a network. Here, two populations of oscillators are considered, each with different network topologies, internal and cross-network couplings and frequencies. Additionally, frustration parameters for the interactions of the cross-network phases are introduced. This may be regarded as a model of competing populations: internal to any one network phase synchronisation is a target state, while externally one or both populations seek to frequency synchronise to a phase in relation to the competitor. We conduct fixed po…
Now a standard in Nonlinear Sciences, the Kuramoto model is the perfect example of the transition to synchrony in heterogeneous systems of coupled oscillators. While its basic phenomenology has been sketched in early works, the corresponding rigorous validation has long remained problematic and was achieved only recently. This paper reviews the mathematical results on asymptotic stability of stationary solutions in the continuum limit of the Kuramoto model, and provides insights into the principal arguments of proofs. This review is complemented with additional original results, various exampl…
When the natural frequencies are allocated symmetrically in the Kuramoto model there exists an invariant torus of dimension [N/2]+1 (N is the population size). A global phase shift invariance allows to reduce the model to $N-1$ dimensions using the phase differences, and doing so the invariant torus becomes [N/2]-dimensional. By means of perturbative calculations based on the renormalization group technique, we show that this torus is asymptotically stable at small coupling if N is odd. If N is even the torus can be stable or unstable depending on the natural frequencies, and both possibilitie…
The Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model for coupled phase oscillators with phase-frustration is often studied in the thermodynamic limit of infinitely many oscillators. Here we extend a model reduction method based on collective coordinates to capture the collective dynamics of finite size Kuramoto-Sakaguchi models. We find that the inclusion of the effects of rogue oscillators is essential to obtain an accurate description, in contrast to the original Kuramoto model where we show that their effects can be ignored. We further introduce a more accurate ansatz function to describe the shape of synchronized…
We uncover a solvable generalization of the Kuramoto model in which shears (or nonisochronicities) and natural frequencies are distributed and statistically dependent. We show that the strength and sign of this dependence greatly alter synchronization and yield qualitatively different phase diagrams. The Ott-Antonsen ansatz allows us to obtain analytical results for a specific family of joint distributions. We also derive, using linear stability analysis, general formulae for the stability border of incoherence.
The cluster synchronization (CS) is a very important characteristic for the higher harmonic cou- pling Kuramoto system. A novel method from the symmetry transformation is provided, and it gives CS a profoundly mathematical explanation and clear physical annotation. Detailed numerical studies for the order parameters in various conditions confirm the theoretical predictions from this new view of the symmetry transformation. The work is very beneficial to the further study on CS in various systems.
The cluster synchronization is a very important characteristic for the higher harmonic coupling Kuramoto system. A novel transformation is provided, and it gives cluster synchronization by the periodic properties of the density function. The periodic properties of the density function also make the cluster sections' boundaries barrier-like, which helps to explain the sensitiveness of cluster synchronization on the initial conditions of the oscillators. Detailed numerical studies confirm the theoretical predictions from this new view of the symmetry transformation. The work is very beneficial t…
We present a collective coordinate approach to study the collective behaviour of a finite ensemble of $N$ stochastic Kuramoto oscillators using two degrees of freedom; one describing the shape dynamics of the oscillators and one describing their mean phase. Contrary to the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$ in which the mean phase of the cluster of globally synchronized oscillators is constant in time, the mean phase of a finite-size cluster experiences Brownian diffusion with a variance proportional to $1/N$. This finite-size effect is quantitatively well captured by our collective coordinate a…
We study a variant of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model in which oscillators are divided into two groups, each characterized by its coupling constant and phase lag. Specifically, we consider the case that one coupling constant is positive and the other negative, and calculate numerically the traveling speed of two clusters emerging in the system and average separation between them as well as the order parameters for positive and negative oscillators, as the two coupling constants, phase lags, and the fraction of positive oscillators are varied. An expression explaining the dependence of the traveling s…
We investigate the dynamics of large, globally-coupled systems of Kuramoto oscillators with heterogeneous interaction delays. For the case of exponentially distributed time delays we derive the full stability diagram that describes the bifurcations in the system. Of particular interest is the onset of hysteresis where both the incoherent and partially synchronized states are stable for a range of coupling strengths -- this occurs at a codimension-two point at the intersection between a Hopf bifucration and saddle-node bifurcation of cycles. By studying this codimension-two point we find the fu…
We study two groups of nonidentical Kuramoto oscillators with differing frequency distributions. Coupling between the groups is repulsive, while coupling between oscillators of the same group is attractive. This asymmetry of interactions leads to an interesting synchronization behavior. For small coupling strength, the mean-fields of both groups resemble a more weakly coupled Kuramoto model. After increasing the coupling strength beyond a threshold, they reach the Bellerophon state of multiple clusters of averagely entrained oscillators. A further increase in the coupling strength then asympto…
Inspired by our recent work that relates bus bunching as a phenomenon of synchronisation of phase oscillators, we construct a model of Kuramoto oscillators that follows an analogous interaction mechanism of local unidirectional coupling. In the bus loop system, we can introduce a no-boarding policy as a form of kicking force to achieve a stable staggered (anti-bunched) state. For Kuramoto oscillators, it turns out that such stable anti-bunched states can exist (without any additional kicking force) if the number of oscillators are at least five. This correspondence between the bus loop system …
We study the synchronisation properties of the Kuramoto model of coupled phase oscillators on a general network. Here we distinguish the ability of such a system to self-synchronise from the stability of this behaviour. While self-synchronisation is a consequence of genuine non-perturbative dynamics, the stability in dynamical systems is usually accessible by fluctuations about a fixed point, here taken to be the synchronised solution. We examine this problem in terms of modes of the graph Laplacian, by which the absolute Lyapunov stability of the synchronised fixed point is readily demonstrat…
Consider any network of $n$ identical Kuramoto oscillators in which each oscillator is coupled bidirectionally with unit strength to at least $μ(n-1)$ other oscillators. There is a critical value of the connectivity, $μ_c$, such that whenever $μ>μ_c$, the system is guaranteed to converge to the all-in-phase synchronous state for almost all initial conditions, but when $μ<μ_c$, there are networks with other stable states. The precise value of the critical connectivity remains unknown, but it has been conjectured to be $μ_c=0.75$. In 2020, Lu and Steinerberger proved that $μ_c\leq 0.7889$, and Y…
We explore chaos in the Kuramoto model with multimodal distributions of the natural frequencies of oscillators and provide a comprehensive description under what conditions chaos occurs. For a natural frequency distribution with $M$ peaks it is typical that there is a range of coupling strengths such that oscillators belonging to each peak form a synchronized cluster, but the clusters do not globally synchronize. We use collective coordinates to describe the inter- and intra-cluster dynamics, which reduces the Kuramoto model to $2M-1$ degrees of freedom. We show that under some assumptions, th…
In his classical work, Kuramoto analytically described the onset of synchronization in all-to-all coupled networks of phase oscillators with random intrinsic frequencies. Specifically, he identified a critical value of the coupling strength, at which the incoherent state loses stability and a gradual build-up of coherence begins. Recently, Kuramoto's scenario was shown to hold for a large class of coupled systems on convergent families of deterministic and random graphs. Guided by these results, in the present work, we study several model problems illustrating the link between network topology…

Repulsive oscillator networks can exhibit multiple cooperative rhythms, including chimera and cluster splay states. Yet, understanding which rhythm prevails remains challenging. Here, we address this fundamental question in the context of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi networks of identical rotators with higher-order coupling. Through analysis and numerics, we show that three-cluster splay states with two distinct coherent clusters and a solitary oscillator are the prevalent rhythms in networks with an odd number of units. We denote such tripod patterns cyclops states with the solitary oscillator reminisc…
The Kuramoto model with high-order coupling has recently attracted some attention in the field of coupled oscillators in order, for instance, to describe clustering phenomena in sets of coupled agents. Instead of considering interactions given directly by the sine of oscillators' angle differences, the interaction is given by the sum of sines of integer multiples of these angle differences. This can be interpreted as a Fourier decomposition of a general $2π$-periodic interaction function. We show that in the case where only one multiple of the angle differences is considered, which we refer to…
We consider the Kuramoto model of an ensemble of interacting oscillators allowing for an arbitrary distribution of frequencies and coupling strengths. We define a family of traveling wave states as stationary in a rotating frame, and derive general equations for their parameters. We suggest empirical stability conditions which, for the case of incoherence, become exact. In addition to making new theoretical predictions, we show that many earlier results follow naturally from our general framework. The results are applicable in scientific contexts ranging from physics to biology.
We study the effects of Janus oscillators in a system of phase oscillators in which the coupling constants take both positive and negative values. Janus oscillators may also form a cluster when the other ones are ordered and we calculate numerically the traveling speed of three clusters emerging in the system and average separations between them as well as the order parameters for three groups of oscillators, as the coupling constants and the fractions of positive and Janus oscillators are varied. An expression explaining the dependence of the traveling speed on these parameters is obtained an…
Scientists have been considering the Kuramoto model to understand the mechanism behind the appearance of collective behaviour, such as frequency synchronisation (FS) as a paradigm, in real-world networks with a finite number of oscillators. A major current challenge is to obtain an analytical solution for the phase-angles. Here, we provide an approximate analytical solution for this problem by deriving a master solution for the finite-size Kuramoto model, without imposing any restriction on the distribution of the natural frequencies of the oscillators. The master solution embodies all particu…
Synchronisation of coupled oscillators is a ubiquitous phenomenon, occurring in topics ranging from biology and physics, to social networks and technology. A fundamental and long-time goal in the study of synchronisation has been to find low-order descriptions of complex oscillator networks and their collective dynamics. However, for the Kuramoto model - the most widely used model of coupled oscillators - this goal has remained surprisingly challenging, in particular for finite-size networks. Here, we propose a model reduction framework that effectively captures synchronisation behaviour in co…
Synchronization in systems of coupled Kuramoto oscillators may depend on their natural frequencies, coupling, and underlying networks. In this paper, we reduce the alternatives to only one by considering identical oscillators where the only parameter that is allowed to change is the underlying network. While such a model was analyzed over the past few decades by studying the size of the basin of attraction of the synchronized state on restricted families of graphs, here we address a qualitative question on general graphs. In an analogy to resistive networks with current sources, we describe an…

We analyse the collective behavior of a mean-field model of phase-oscillators of Kuramoto-Daido type coupled through pairwise interactions which depend on phase differences: the coupling function is composed of three harmonics. We provide convincing evidence of a transient but long-lasting chaotic collective chaos, which persists in the thermodynamic limit. The regime is analysed with the help of clever direct numerical simulations, by determining the maximum Lyapunov exponent and assessing the transversal stability to the self-consistent mean field. The structure of the invariant measure is f…
The Ott--Antonsen ansatz is a powerful tool to extract the behaviors of coupled phase oscillators, but it imposes a strong restriction on the initial condition. Herein, a systematic extension of the Ott--Antonsen ansatz is proposed to relax the restriction, enabling the systematic approximation of the behavior of a globally coupled phase oscillator system with an arbitrary initial condition. The proposed method is validated on the Kuramoto--Sakaguchi model of identical phase oscillators. The method yields cluster and chimera-like solutions that are not obtained by the conventional ansatz.
We study the global bifurcations of frequency weighted Kuramoto model in low-dimension for network of fully connected oscillators. To study the effect of non-zero-centered frequency distribution, we consider two symmetric Lorentzians as an example. We derive the stability diagram of the system and show that the infinite-dimensional problem reduces to a flow in four dimensions. Using the system symmetries, it can be further reduced to two dimensions. Using this analytic framework, we obtain bifurcation boundaries of the system, which is compatible with our numeric simulations. We show that the …
Models of learning typically focus on synaptic plasticity. However, learning is the result of both synaptic and myelin plasticity. Specifically, synaptic changes often co-occur and interact with myelin changes, leading to complex dynamic interactions between these processes. Here, we investigate the implications of these interactions for the coupling behavior of a system of Kuramoto oscillators. To that end, we construct a fully connected, one-dimensional ring network of phase oscillators whose coupling strength (reflecting synaptic strength) as well as conduction velocity (reflecting myelinat…
We consider the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model of identical coupled phase oscillators with a common noisy forcing. While common noise always tends to synchronize the oscillators, a strong repulsive coupling prevents the fully synchronous state and leads to a nontrivial distribution of oscillator phases. In previous numerical simulations, a formation of stable multicluster states has been observed in this regime. However we argue here, that because identical phase oscillators in the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model form a partially integrable system according to the Watanabe-Strogatz theory, the formation of…

Many coordination phenomena are based on a synchronisation process, whose global behaviour emerges from the interactions among the individual parts. Often in Nature, such self-organising mechanism allows the system to behave as a whole and thus grounding its very first existence, or expected functioning, on such process. There are however cases where synchronisation acts against the stability of the system; for instance in the case of engineered structures, resonances among sub parts can destabilise the whole system. In this Letter we propose an innovative control method to tackle the synchron…
Globally coupled ensembles of phase oscillators serve as useful tools for modeling synchronization and collective behavior in a variety of applications. As interest in the effects of simplicial interactions (i.e., non-additive, higher-order interactions between three or more units) continues to grow we study an extension of the Kuramoto model where oscillators are coupled via three-way interactions that exhibits novel dynamical properties including clustering, multistability, and abrupt desynchronization transitions. Here we provide a rigorous description of the stability of various multiclust…
The emergence of explosive synchronization has been reported as an abrupt transition in complex networks of first-order Kuramoto oscillators. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the nodes in a second-order Kuramoto model, perform a cascade of transitions toward a synchronous macroscopic state, which is a novel phenomenon that we call \textit{cluster explosive synchronization}. We provide a rigorous analytical treatment using a mean-field analysis in uncorrelated networks. Our findings are in good agreement with numerical simulations and fundamentally deepen the understanding of microscopic mec…
We explore the collective phase dynamics of Wien-bridge oscillators coupled resistively. We carefully analyze the behavior of two coupled oscillators, obtaining a transformation from voltage to effective phase. From the phase dynamics we show that the coupling can be quantitatively described by Sakaguchi's modification to the Kuramoto model. We also examine an ensemble of oscillators whose frequencies are taken from a flat distribution within a fixed frequency interval. We characterize in detail the synchronized cluster, its initial formation, as well as its effect on unsynchronized oscillator…

The Kuramoto model is a canonical model for understanding phase-locking phenomenon. It is well-understood that, in the usual mean-field scaling, full phase-locking is unlikely and that it is partially phase-locked states that are important in applications. Despite this, while there has been much attention given to the existence and stability of fully phase-locked states in the finite N Kuramoto model, the partially phase-locked states have received much less attention. In this paper, we present two related results. Firstly, we derive an analytical criterion that, for sufficiently strong coupli…
