Well-posedness and exponential decay for the Euler-Bernoulli beam conveying fluid equation with non-constant velocity and dynamical boundary conditions
In this paper, we consider an Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with time-varying internal fluid. We assume that the fluid is moving with non-constant velocity and dynamical boundary conditions are satisfied. We prove the existence and uniqueness of global solution under suitable assumptions on the tension of beam and on the parameters of the problem. Afterwards, we establish the exponential stability of the solution by introducing a suitable Lyapunov functional.
We give a determination of the equivalence group of Euler-Bernoulli equation and of one of its generalizations, and thus derive some symmetry properties of this equation.
In this paper, we discuss Bernoulli's principle to the 3-dimensional incompressible Euler equation in a bounded local Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a Lipschitz boundary. Using topological properties of the level set and Morse-Sard theorem, we will prove Bernoulli's principle on Sobolev space.
We study a Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with localized discontinuous structural damping. As our main result, we prove that the associated $C_0$-semigroup $(S(t))_{t\geq0}$ is of Gevrey class $δ>24$ for $t>0$, hence immediately differentiable. Moreover, we show that $(S(t))_{t\geq0}$ is exponentially stable.
We show that the linear brittle Griffith energy on a thin rectangle $Γ$-converges after rescaling to the linear one-dimensional brittle Euler-Bernoulli beam energy. In contrast to the existing literature, we prove a corresponding sharp compactness result, namely a suitable weak convergence after subtraction of piecewise rigid motions with the number of jumps bounded by the energy
We consider the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with a local Kelvin-Voigt dissipation type in the interval $(-1,1)$. The coefficient damping is only effective in $(0,1)$ and is degenerating near the $0$ point with a speed at least equal to $x^α$ where $α\in(0,5)$. We prove that the semigroup corresponding to the system is polynomially stable and the decay rate depends on the degeneracy speed $α$.
We consider an inhomogeneous Euler-Bernoulli (EB) beam of length $L$ clamped at both ends and subject to : an external frictional damping and a thermal effect (Fourier law). We prove the well-posedness of the model and analyze the behavior of the solution as $t \rightarrow + \infty.$ The existence is proved using semigroup theory, and the exponential stabilization of solutions is obtained considering multiplier technique. A numerical illustration of the energy decay is given, based on initial data close to a real physical experiment.
Euler-Bernoulli beams from a symmetry standpoint-characterization of equivalent equations
(Proceedings of the Royal Society London A413(1987)235-250)

The main goal in this work is to prove the exponential decay of the semigroup associated with a thermoelastic system composed of an Euler-Bernoulli type equation that models the transverse oscillation of a homogeneous microbeam with axial movement and in which a viscous damping is acting. In addition, to this microbeam has been endowed with a thermal effect given by the Coleman-Gurtin model which depends essentially on past history, representing an improvement of Fourier, Cattaneo, and Green-Naghdi models. To achieve these goals, we will use mainly multiplicative techniques and standard tools …
We are concerned with the inverse problem of determining both the potential and the damping coefficient in a dissipative wave equation from boundary measurements. We establish stability estimates of logarithmic type when the measurements are given by the operator who maps the initial condition to Neumann boundary trace of the solution of the corresponding initial-boundary value problem. We build a method combining an observability inequality together with a spectral decomposition. We also apply this method to a clamped Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. Finally, we indicate how the present approac…
We study the initial-boundary value problem for an Euler-Bernoulli beam model with discontinuous bending stiffness laying on a viscoelastic foundation and subjected to an axial force and an external load both of Dirac-type. The corresponding model equation is fourth order partial differential equation and involves discontinuous and distributional coefficients as well as a distributional right-hand side. Moreover the viscoelastic foundation is of Zener type and described by a fractional differential equation with respect to time. We show how functional analytic methods for abstract variational …
This paper is concerned with the stability analysis of a lossless Euler-Bernoulli beam that carries a tip payload which is coupled to a nonlinear dynamic feedback system. This setup comprises nonlinear dynamic boundary controllers satisfying the nonlinear KYP lemma as well as the interaction with a nonlinear passive environment. Global-in-time wellposedness and asymptotic stability is rigorously proven for the resulting closed-loop PDE-ODE system. The analysis is based on semigroup theory for the corresponding first order evolution problem. For the large-time analysis, precompactness of the tr…
In this paper we will study the asymptotic behaviour of the energy decay of a transmission plate equation with force and moment feedback. Precisly, we shall prove that the energy decay at least logarithmically over the time. The method consist to use the classical second order Carleman estimate to estabish a resolvent estimate which provide by the famous Burq's result [Bur98] the kind of decay above mentionned.
In this paper, we investigate the energy decay of hyperbolic systems of wave-wave, wave-Euler- Bernoulli beam and beam-beam types. The two equations are coupled through boundary connection with only one localized non-smooth fractional Kelvin-Voigt damping. First, we reformulate each system into an augmented model and using a general criteria of Arendt-Batty, we prove that our models are strongly stable. Next, by using frequency domain approach, combined with multiplier technique and some interpolation inequalities, we establish different types of polynomial energy decay rate which depends on t…
We study the asymptotic behaviour for a system consisting of a clamped flexible beam that carries a tip payload, which is attached to a nonlinear damper and a nonlinear spring at its end. Characterizing the omega-limit sets of the trajectories, we give a necessary condition under which the system is asymptotically stable. In the case when this condition is not satisfied, we show that the beam deflection approaches a non-decaying time-periodic solution.
In this work we investigate a very weak solution to the initial-boundary value problem of an Euler-Bernoulli beam model. We allow for bending stiffness, axial- and transversal forces as well as for initial conditions to be irregular functions or distributions. We prove the well-posedness of this problem in the very weak sense. More precisely, we define the very weak solution to the problem and show its existence and uniqueness. For regular enough coefficients we show consistency with the weak solution. Numerical analysis shows that the very weak solution coincides with the weak solution, when …
In this paper we will study the asymptotic behaviour of the energy decay of a transmission plate equation with locally distributed Kelvin-Voigt feedback. Precisly, we shall prove that the energy decay at least logarithmically over the time. The originality of this method comes from the fact that using a Carleman estimate for a transmission second order system which will be derived from the plate equation to establish a resolvent estimate which provide, by the famous Burq's result [Bur98], the kind of decay mentionned above.
We consider $N$ Euler-Bernoulli beams and $N$ strings alternatively connected to one another and forming a particular network which is a chain beginning with a string. We study two stabilization problems on the same network and the spectrum of the corresponding conservative system: the characteristic equation as well as its asymptotic behavior are given. We prove that the energy of the solutions of the first dissipative system tends to zero when the time tends to infinity under some irrationality assumptions of the length of the strings and beams. On another hand we prove a polynomial decay re…
We present a mathematical and numerical analysis on a control model for the time evolution of a multi-layered piezoelectric cantilever with tip mass and moment of inertia, as developed by Kugi and Thull [31]. This closed-loop control system consists of the inhomogeneous Euler-Bernoulli beam equation coupled to an ODE system that is designed to track both the position and angle of the tip mass for a given reference trajectory. This dynamic controller only employs first order spatial derivatives, in order to make the system technically realizable with piezoelectric sensors. From the literature i…
We consider a chain of Euler-Bernoulli beams with spatial dependent mass density, modulus of elasticity and area moment which are interconnected in dissipative or conservative ways and prove uniform exponential energy decay of the coupled system for suitable dissipative boundary conditions at one end and suitable conservative boundary conditions at the other end. We thereby generalise some results of G. Chen, M.C. Delfour, A.M. Krall and G. Payre from the 1980's to the case of spatial dependence of the parameters.
We study a planar thin brittle beam subject to elastic deformations and cracks described in terms of a nonlinear Griffith energy functional acting on $SBV$ deformations of the beam. In particular we consider the case in which elastic bulk contributions due to finite bending of the beam are comparable to the surface energy which is necessary to completely break the beam into several large pieces. In the limit of vanishing aspect ratio we rigorously derive an effective Griffith-Euler-Bernoulli functional which acts on piecewise $W^{2,2}$ regular curves representing the midline of the beam. The e…
The main contribution of this paper is the extension of the well-known boundary-control strategy based on structural invariants to the control of infinite-dimensional systems with in-domain actuation. The systems under consideration, governed by partial differential equations, are described in a port-Hamiltonian setting making heavy use of the underlying jet-bundle structure, where we restrict ourselves to systems with 1-dimensional spatial domain and 2nd-order Hamiltonian. To show the applicability of the proposed approach, we develop a dynamic controller for an Euler-Bernoulli beam actuated …
In this paper, a new formulation for the three dimensional Euler equations is derived. Since the Euler system is hyperbolic-elliptic coupled in a subsonic region, so an effective decoupling of the hyperbolic and elliptic modes is essential for any development of the theory. The key idea in our formulation is to use the Bernoulli's law to reduce the dimension of the velocity field by defining new variables $(1,β_2=\frac{u_2}{u_1},β_3=\frac{u_3}{u_1})$ and replacing $u_1$ by the Bernoulli's function $B$ through $u_1^2=\frac{2(B-h(ρ))}{1+β_2^2+β_3^2}$. We find a conserved quantity for flows with …
Let a fourth and a second order evolution equations be coupled via the interface by transmission conditions, and suppose that the first one is stabilized by a localized distributed feedback. What will then be the effect of such a partial stabilization on the decay of solutions at infinity? Is the behavior of the first component sufficient to stabilize the second one? The answer given in this paper is that sufficiently smooth solutions decay logarithmically at infinity even the feedback dissipation affects an arbitrarily small open subset of the interior. The method used, in this case, is based…
This contribution is concerned with the motion planning for underactuated Euler-Bernoulli beams. The design of the feedforward control is based on a differential parametrization of the beam, where all system variables are expressed in terms of a free time function and its infinitely many derivatives. In the paper, we derive an advantageous representation of the set of all formal differential parametrizations of the beam. Based on this representation, we identify a well-known parametrization, for the first time without the use of operational calculus. This parametrization is a flat one, as the …
Complications exist when solving the field equation in the nonlocal field. This has been attributed to the complexity of deriving explicit forms of the nonlocal boundary conditions. Thus, the paradoxes in the existing solutions of the nonlocal field equation have been revealed in recent studies. In the present study, a new methodology is proposed to easily determine the elastic nonlocal fields from their local counterparts without solving the field equation. This methodology depends on the iterative-nonlocal residual approach in which the sum of the nonlocal fields is treaded as a residual fie…
On Wave-Like Differential Equations in General Hilbert Space. The Functional Analytic Investigation of Euler-Bernoulli Bending Vibrations of a Beam as an Application in Engineering Science
We construct non-vanishing steady solutions to the Euler equations (for some metric) with analytic Bernoulli function in each three-manifold where they can exist: graph manifolds. Using the theory of integrable systems, any admissible Morse-Bott function can be realized as the Bernoulli function of some non-vanishing steady Euler flow. This can be interpreted as an inverse problem to Arnold's structure theorem and yields as a corollary the topological classification of such solutions. Finally, we prove that the topological obstruction holds without the non-vanishing assumption: steady Euler fl…
