The homogeneous electron gas is one of the most studied model systems in condensed matter physics. It is also at the basis of the large majority of approximations to the functionals of density functional theory. As such, its exchange-correlation energy has been extensively studied, and is well-known for systems of 1, 2, and 3 dimensions. Here, we extend this model and compute the exchange and correlation energy, as a function of the Wigner-Seitz radius $r_s$, for arbitrary dimension $D$. We find a very different behavior for reduced dimensional spaces ($D=1$ and 2), our three dimensional space, and for higher dimensions. In fact, for $D > 3$, the leading term of the correlation energy does not depend on the logarithm of $r_s$ (as for $D=3$), but instead scales polynomialy: $ -c_D /r_s^{γ_D}$, with the exponent $γ_D=(D-3)/(D-1)$. In the large-$D$ limit, the value of $c_D$ is found to depend linearly with the dimension. In this limit, we also find that the concepts of exchange and correlation merge, sharing a common $1/r_s$ dependence.
We derive exact equations for a broken scale invariance of the homogeneous electron gas HEG, and show that they lead to a closed non-linear integral equation for the density- density correlation function when evaluated to leading order in the 1/N expansion. More generally, the identity leads to a sequence of more refined systems of equations, which close on a finite number of one plasmon irreducible (1PLI) correlation functions.

The functional-renormalization-group aided density-functional theory (FRG-DFT) is applied to the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas (2DHEG). The correlation energy of the 2DHEG is derived as a function of the Wigner-Seitz radius $ r_{\rm s} $ directly. We find that our correlation energy completely reproduces the exact behavior at the high-density limit. For finite density, the result of FRG-DFT shows good agreement with the Monte Carlo (MC) results in the high-density region, although the discrepancy between FRG-DFT and MC results becomes larger as the system becomes more dilute. Our st…

Implying perturbation theory, the impact of the dipole dipole interaction (DDI) on the thermodynamic properties of a homogeneous electron gas at zero temperature is investigated. Through the second quantization formalism, the analytic expressions for the ground state energy and the DDI energy are obtained. In this paper, the DDI energy has similarities with the previous works done by others. We show that its general behavior depends on density and the total angular momentum. Especially, it is found that the DDI energy has a highly state-dependent behavior. With the growth of density, the magni…
The Hartree-Fock ground state of the Homogeneous Electron Gas is never translation invariant, even at high densities. As proved by Overhauser, the (paramagnetic) free Fermi Gas is always unstable under the formation of spin or charge density waves. We give here the first explicit bound on the energy gain due to the breaking of translational symmetry. Our bound is exponentially small at high density, which justifies posteriori the use of the non-interacting Fermi Gas as a reference state in the large-density expansion of the correlation energy of the Homogeneous Electron Gas. We are also able t…
