We consider solutions $u\in W^{1,p}\big(Ω;\mathbb{R}^{N}\big)$ of the $p$-Laplacian PDE \begin{equation} \nabla\cdot\big(a(x)|Du|^{p-2}Du\big)=0,\notag \end{equation} for $x\inΩ\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}$, where $Ω$ is open and bounded. More generally, we consider solutions of the elliptic system \begin{equation} \nabla\cdot\left(a(x)g'\big(a(x)|Du|\big)\frac{Du}{|Du|}\right)=0\text{, }x\inΩ\notag \end{equation} as well as minimizers of the functional \begin{equation} \int_Ωg\big(a(x)|Du|\big)\ dx.\notag \end{equation} In each case, the coefficient map $a\ : \ Ω\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is only assumed to be of class $VMO(Ω)\cap L^{\infty}(Ω)$, which means that it may be discontinuous. Without assuming that $x\mapsto a(x)$ has any weak differentiability, we show that $u\in\mathscr{C}_{\text{loc}}^{0,α}(Ω)$ for each $0<α<1$. The preceding results are, in fact, a corollary of a much more general result, which applies to the functional \begin{equation} \int_Ωf\big(x,u,Du\big)\ dx\notag \end{equation} in case $f$ is only asymptotically convex.
We establish partial regularity for vector-valued solutions to inhomogeneous elliptic systems in divergence form where the coefficients are possibly discontinuous with respect to $x$. More precisely, we assume a VMO-condition with respect to the $x$ and continuity with respect to $u$ and prove Hölder continuity of the solutions outside of singular sets.
We establish partial regularity for vector-valued solutions to parabolic systems where the coefficients are possibly discontinuous with respect to (x,t). More precisely, we assume a VMO-condition with respect to the (x,t) and continuity with respect to u and prove Hölder continuity of the solutions outside of singular sets.
We study a class of nonlocal double phase problems with discontinuous coefficients. A local self-improving property and a higher Hölder continuity result for weak solutions to such problems are obtained under the assumptions that the associated coefficient functions are of type VMO (vanishing mean oscillation) and that the principal coefficient depends not only on the variables but also on the solution itself.
We prove higher regularity for nonlinear nonlocal equations with possibly discontinuous coefficients of VMO-type in fractional Sobolev spaces. While for corresponding local elliptic equations with VMO coefficients it is only possible to obtain higher integrability, in our nonlocal setting we are able to also prove a substantial amount of higher differentiability, so that our result is in some sense of purely nonlocal type. By embedding, we also obtain higher Hölder regularity for such nonlocal equations.
We present several results on the smoothness in $L_{p}$ sense of filtering densities under the Lipschitz continuity assumption on the coefficients of a partially observable diffusion processes. We obtain them by rewriting in divergence form filtering equation which are usually considered in terms of formally adjoint to operators in nondivergence form.
We study local boundedness and Hölder continuity of a parabolic equation involving the fractional $p$-Laplacian of order $s$, with $0<s<1$, $2\leq p < \infty$, with a general right hand side. We focus on obtaining precise Hölder continuity estimates. The proof is based on a perturbative argument using the already known Hölder continuity estimate for solutions to the equation with zero right hand side.
Applying the DeGiorgi Method the Holder continuity of the swirl is proved for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations from Lq(0,T;Lp) with 3/p+2/q < 1.
We study generalized fractional $p$-Laplacian equations to prove local boundedness and Hölder continuity of weak solutions to such nonlocal problems by finding a suitable fractional Sobolev-Poincaré inquality.
By borrowing ideas from the parabolic theory, we use a combination of De Giorgi's and Moser's methods to give some remarks on the proof of Hölder continuity of weak solutions of elliptic equations.
We study Hölder continuity for solutions of the $p$-Laplace equation. This is established through a method involving an ordinary differential inequality, in contrast to the classical proof of the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser Theorem which uses iteration of an inequality through concentric balls.
We show that bounded solutions of the quasilinear elliptic equation $Δ_{p(x)} u=g+div(\textbf{F})$ are locally Hölder continuous provided that the functions $g$ and $\textbf{F}$ are in suitable Lebesgue spaces.
We obtain new partial Hölder continuity results for solutions to divergence form elliptic systems with discontinuous coefficients, obeying $p(x)$-type nonstandard growth conditions. By an application of the method of $\mathcal{A}$-harmonic approximation, we are able to allow for both VMO-discontinuities in the coefficients, and the minimal $\log$-Hölder regularity assumption on the exponent function. In doing so, we recover a local version of the quantisation phenomenon characteristic continuous coefficient case.
We study the incompressible Euler equations in the $α$-modulation $M^{s,α}_{p,q}$ and Hölder $C^{1+σ}$ spaces on the plane. We show that for these spaces the associated data-to-solution map is not continuous on bounded sets.
In this paper, we consider non-local integro-differential equations under certain natural assumptions on the kernel, and obtain persistence of Hölder continuity for their solutions. In other words, we prove that a solution stays in $C^β$ for all time if its initial data lies in $C^β$. This result has an application for a fully non-linear problem, which is used in the field of image processing. The proof is in the spirit of the paper [18] of Kiselev and Nazarov where they established Hölder continuity of the critical surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation.
This work is concerned with both higher integrability and differentiability for linear nonlocal equations with possibly very irregular coefficients of VMO-type or even coefficients that are merely small in BMO. In particular, such coefficients might be discontinuous. While for corresponding local elliptic equations with VMO coefficients such a gain of Sobolev regularity along the differentiability scale is unattainable, it was already observed in previous works that gaining differentiability in our nonlocal setting is possible under less restrictive assumptions than in the local setting. In th…
We give a proof of the Hölder continuity of weak solutions of certain degenerate doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in measure spaces. We only assume the measure to be a doubling non-trivial Borel measure which supports a Poincaré inequality. The proof discriminates between large scales, for which a Harnack inequality is used, and small scales, that require intrinsic scaling methods.
We establish the local Hölder continuity for the nonnegative weak solutions of certain doubly nonlinear parabolic equations possessing a singularity in the time derivative part and a degeneracy in the principal part. The proof involves the method of intrinsic scaling and the setting is a measure space equipped with a doubling non-trivial Borel measure supporting a Poincaré inequality.
We consider multivalued maps between $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ open ($N \ge 2$) and a smooth, compact Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{N}$ locally minimizing the Dirichlet energy. An interior partial Hölder regularity result in the spirit of R. Schoen and K. Uhlenbeck is presented. Consequently a minimizer is Hölder continuous outside a set of Hausdorff dimension at most $N-3$. F. Almgren's original theory includes a global interior Hölder continuity result if the minimizers are valued into some $\mathbb{R}^m$. It cannot hold in general if the target is changed into a Riemannian manifold, since it …
We obtained the $C^α$ continuity for weak solutions of a class of ultraparabolic equations with measurable coefficients of the form $${\partial_t u} = \partial_x(a(x,y,t)\partial_x u) +b_0(x,y,t)\partial_x u+b(x,y,t)\partial_y u,$$ which generalized our recent results on KFP equations.
We consider a coupled system consisting of a degenerate porous medium type of Keller-Segel system and Stokes system modeling the motion of swimming bacteria living in fluid and consuming oxygen. We establish the global existence of weak solutions and Hölder continuous solutions in dimension three, under the assumption that the power of degeneracy is above a certain number depending on given parameter values. To show Hölder continuity of weak solutions, we consider a single degenerate porous medium equation with lower order terms, and via a unified method of proof, we obtain Hölder regularity, …
This article is about the convex solution $u$ of the Monge--Ampère equation on an at least 2-dimensional open bounded convex domain with Dirichlet boundary data and nonnegative bounded right-hand side. For convex functions with zero boundary data, an Alexandrov maximum principle $|u(x)| \leq C \operatorname{dist}(x,\partialΩ)^α$ is equivalent to (uniform) Hölder continuity with the same constant and exponent. Convex $α$-Hölder continuous functions are $W^{1,p}$ for $p < 1/(1{-}α)$. We prove Hölder continuity with the exponent $α=2/n$ for $n \geq 3$ and any $α\in (0,1)$ for $n=2$, provided that…
We show interior Hölder continuity for a class of quasi-linear degenerate reaction-diffusion equations. The diffusion coefficient in the equation has a porous medium type degeneracy and its primitive has a singularity. The reaction term is locally bounded except in zero. The class of equations we analyse is motivated by a model that describes the growth of biofilms. Our method is based on the original proof of interior Hölder continuity for the porous medium equation. We do not restrict ourselves to solutions that are limits in the weak topology of a sequence of approximate continuous solution…
We study the propagation of regularity of solutions to a three dimensional system of linear parabolic PDE known as the kinematic dynamo equations. The divergence free drift velocity is assumed to be at the critical regularity level with respect to the natural scaling of the equations.
We complete the study of the regularity for Trudinger's equation by proving that weak solutions are Hölder continuous also in the singular case. The setting is that of a measure space with a doubling non-trivial Borel measure supporting a Poincaré inequality. The proof uses the Harnack inequality and intrinsic scaling.
It is shown that the data to solution map for the hyperelastic rod equation is Hölder continuous from bounded sets of Sobolev spaces with exponent $s > 3/2$ measured in a weaker Sobolev norm with index $r < s$ in both the periodic and non-periodic cases. The proof is based on energy estimates coupled with a delicate commutator estimate and multiplier estimate.
We show the Hölder continuity of quasiminimizers of the energy functionals $\int f(x,u,\nabla u)\,dx$ with nonstandard growth under the general structure conditions $$ |z|^{p(x)} - b(x)|y|^{r(x)}-g(x) \leq f(x,y,z) \leq μ|z|^{p(x)} + b(x)|y|^{r(x)} + g(x). $$ The result is illustrated by showing that weak solutions to a class of $(A,B)$-harmonic equations $$ -{\rm div} A(x,u,\nabla u) = B(x,u,\nabla u), $$ are quasiminimizers of the variational integral of the above type and, thus, are Hölder continuous. Our results extend works by Chiadò Piat-Coscia, Fan-Zhao and Giusti-Giaquinta.
In this paper we study the regularity of weak solutions to an elliptic-parabolic system modeling natural network formation. The system is singular and involves cubic nonlinearity. Our investigation reveals that weak solutions are Hölder continuous when the space dimension $N$ is $2$. This is achieved via an inequality associated with the Stummel-Kato class of functions and refinement of a lemma originally due to S. Campanato and C. B. Morrey (\cite{G}, p. 86).
This paper deals with two separate but related results. First we consider weak solutions to a parabolic operator with Hörmander vector fields. Adapting the iteration scheme of Jürgen Moser for elliptic and parabolic equations in $\mathbb{R}^n$ we show a parabolic Harnack inequality. Then, after proving the Harnack inequality for weak solutions to equations of the form $u_t = \sum X_i (a_{ij} X_j u)$ we use this to show Hölder continuity. We assume the coefficients are bounded and elliptic. The iteration scheme is a tool that may be adapted to many settings and we extend this to nonlinear parab…
Locally bounded, local weak solutions to a special class of quasilinear, anisotropic, $p$-Laplacian type elliptic equations, are shown to be locally Hölder continuous. Homogeneous local upper bounds are established for local weak solutions to a general class of quasilinear anisotropic equations.
In these notes we consider solutions u to the evolution three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. Set w= curl u, the vorticity of u. Our study concerns mainly the relation between Holdercontinuity assumptions on the direction of the vorticity and induced space-time integrability regularity results for w. We discuss some related open problems, consistent with our calculations. We hope that our approach should help readers interesting in carrying on the investigation.

We address the persistence of Hölder continuity for weak solutions of the linear drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal pressure \[ u_t + b \cdot \grad u - \lap u = \grad p,\qquad \grad\cdot u =0 \] on $[0,\infty) \times \R^{n}$, with $n \geq 2$. The drift velocity $b$ is assumed to be at the critical regularity level, with respect to the natural scaling of the equations. The proof draws on Campanato's characterization of Hölder spaces, and uses a maximum-principle-type argument by which we control the growth in time of certain local averages of $u$. We provide an estimate that does not depend…
We show that solutions of time-dependent degenerate parabolic equations with super-quadratic growth in the gradient variable and possibly unbounded right-hand side are locally ${\mathcal C}^{0,α}$. Unlike the existing (and more involved) proofs for equations with bounded right-hand side, our arguments rely on constructions of sub- and supersolutions combined with improvement of oscillation techniques.
We discuss the regularity of solutions of 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by singular forces. The problem is motivated by the study of complex fluids modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing microscopic corpora embedded in the fluid. This leads naturally to bounded added stress and hence to $W^{-1,\infty}$ forcing of the Navier-Stokes equations.
In this work, Holder continuity is obtained for solutions to the nonlocal kinetic Fokker-Planck Equation, and to a family of related equations with general integro-differential operators. These equations can be seen as a generalization of the Fokker-Planck Equation, or as a linearization of non-cutoff Boltzmann. Difficulties arise because our equations are hypoelliptic, so we utilize the theory of averaging lemmas. Regularity is obtained using De Giorgi's method, so it does not depend on the regularity of initial conditions or coefficients. This work assumes stronger constraints on the nonloca…
This article studies the partial Hölder continuity of weak solutions to certain degenerate parabolic systems whose model is the differentiable parabolic $p(x,t)$-Laplacian system, \begin{equation*}\partial_t u-\operatorname{div}[μ(z)(1+|Du|^2)^{\frac{p(z)-2}{2}}Du]=0,\qquad p(z)\geq2.\end{equation*} Here, the exponential function $p(z)$ satisfies a logarithmic continuity condition. We show that if $μ(z)$ satisfies a certain VMO-type condition, then $u$ is locally Hölder continuous except for a measure zero set.
We examine the regularity of weak solutions of quasi-geostrophic (QG) type equations with supercritical ($α<1/2$) dissipation $(-Δ)^α$. This study is motivated by a recent work of Caffarelli and Vasseur, in which they study the global regularity issue for the critical ($α= 1/2$) QG equation \cite{CV}. Their approach successively increases the regularity levels of Leray-Hopf weak solutions: from $L^2$ to $L^\infty$, from $L^\infty$ to Hölder ($C^δ$, $δ>0$), and from Hölder to classical solutions. In the supercritical case, Leray-Hopf weak solutions can still be shown to be $L^\infty$, but it do…
We extend the celebrate De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory to a wide class of nonlinear equations driven by nonlocal, possibly degenerate, integro-differential operators, whose model is the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator on the Heisenberg-Weyl group $\mathbb{H}^n$. Amongst other results, we prove that the weak solutions to such a class of problems are bounded and Hölder continuous, by also establishing general estimates as fractional Caccioppoli-type estimates with tail and logarithmic-type estimates.
We construct an example showing that the solution map of the Euler equations is not continuous in the Hölder space from $C^{1,α}$ to $L^\infty_tC^{1,α}_x$ for any $0<α<1$. On the other hand we show that it is continuous when restricted to the little Hölder subspace $c^{1,α}$. We apply the latter to prove an ill-posedness result for solutions of the vorticity equations in Besov spaces near the critical space $B^1_{2,1}$. As a consequence we show that a sequence of best constants of the Sobolev embedding theorem near the critical function space is not continuous.
We provide several regularity results for non-homogeneous drift-diffusion equations with applications to general dissipative SQG. Our results unify in a rather simple way several previously known results. We build the estimates on an algebraic identity (for the refined energy argument) which relates any integral operator with pure powers of the laplacian.
In this paper we prove the boundedness and Hölder continuity of quasilinear elliptic problems involving variable exponents for a homogeneous Dirichlet and a nonhomogeneous Neumann boundary condition, respectively. The novelty of our work is the fact that we allow critical growth even on the boundary and so we close the gap in the papers of Fan-Zhao [Nonlinear Anal. 36 (1999), no. 3, 295--318.] and Winkert-Zacher [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. S 5 (2012), no. 4, 865--878.] in which the critical cases are excluded. Our approach is based on a modified version of De Giorgi's iteration technique…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{2}$ be a bounded, Lipschitz domain. We consider bounded, weak solutions ($u\in W^{1, 2}\cap L^{\infty}(Ω;\mathbb{R}^N)$) of the vector-valued, Euler-Lagrange system: \text{div } \big( A(x, u)Du\big)=g(x, u, Du)\quad\text{in }Ω. Under natural growth conditions on the principal part and the inhomogeneity, but without any further restriction on the growth of the inhomogeneity (for example, via a smallness condition), we use a blow-up argument to prove that every bounded, weak solution of the system is Hölder continuous. Since the dimension of $Ω$ is $2$ and $u\in W^{1, 2}…
This paper is concerned with Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions of second-order, fully non-linear elliptic integro-differential equations. Our results rely on two key ingredients: first we assume that, at each point of the domain, either the equation is strictly elliptic in the classical fully non-linear sense, or (and this is the most original part of our work) the equation is strictly elliptic in a non-local non-linear sense we make precise. Next we impose some regularity and growth conditions on the equation. These results are concerned with a large class of integro-differential opera…
The Hölder continuity of the solution to a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation arising from one dimensional super process is obtained. It is proved that the Hölder exponent in time variable is as close as to 1/4, improving the result of 1/10 in a recent paper by Li et al [3]. The method is to use the Malliavin calculus. The Hölder continuity in spatial variable x of exponent 1/2 is also obtained by using this new approach. This Hölder continuity result is sharp since the corresponding linear heat equation has the same Hölder continuity.
Here we generalize quasilinear parabolic $p-$Laplacian type equations to obtain the prototype equation as \[ u_t - \text{div} (g(|Du|)/ |Du| \cdot Du) = 0, \] where a nonnegative, increasing, and continuous function $g$ trapped in between two power functions $|Du|^{g_0 -1}$ and $|Du|^{g_1 -1}$ with $1<g_0 \leq g_1 < \infty$. Through this generalization in the setting from Orlicz spaces, we provide a uniform proof with a single geometric setting that a bounded weak solution is locally Hölder continuous considering $1 < g_0 \leq g_1 \leq 2$ and $2 \leq g_0 \leq g_1 < \infty$ separately. By using…
We continue to study regularity results for weak solutions of the large class of second order degenerate quasilinear equations of the form \begin{eqnarray} \text{div}\big(A(x,u,\nabla u)\big) = B(x,u,\nabla u)\text{ for }x\inΩ\nonumber \end{eqnarray} as considered in our previous paper giving local boundedness of weak solutions. Here we derive a version of Harnack's inequality as well as local Hölder continuity for weak solutions. The possible degeneracy of an equation in the class is expressed in terms of a nonnegative definite quadratic form associated with its principal part. No smoothness …
We consider Stokes system in bounded domains and we present conditions of given data, in particular, boundary data, which ensure Hölder continuity of solutions. For Hölder continuous solutions for the Stokes system the normal component of boundary data requires a bit more regular than boundary data of Hölder continuous solutions for the heat equation. We also construct an example, which shows that Hölder continuity is no longer valid, unless the proposed condition of boundary data is fulfilled. As an application, we consider a certain general types of nonlinear systems coupled to fluid equatio…
We consider equations involving a combination of local and nonlocal degenerate $p$-Laplace operators. The main contribution of the paper is almost Lipschitz regularity for the homogeneous equation and Hölder continuity with an explicit Hölder exponent in the general case. For certain parameters, our results also imply Hölder continuity of the gradient. In addition, we establish existence, uniqueness and local boundedness. The approach is based on an iteration in the spirit of Moser combined with an approximation method.
In this paper we obtain a Harnack type inequality for solutions to elliptic equations in divergence form with non-standard $p(x)-$type growth. A model equation is the inhomogeneous $p(x)-$laplacian. Namely, \[ Δ_{p(x)}u:=\mbox{div}\big(|\nabla u|^{p(x)-2}\nabla u\big)=f(x)\quad\mbox{in}\quadΩ\] for which we prove Harnack inequality when $f\in L^{q_0}(Ω)$ if $\max\{1,\frac N{p_{min}}\}<q_0\le \infty$. The constant in Harnack inequality depends on $u$ only through $\||u|^{p(x)}\|_{L^1(Ω)}^{p_{max}-p_{min}}$. Dependence of the constant on $u$ is known to be necessary in the case of variable $p(x)…
