We report a very high precision interferometric sensor with resolution up to ~λ/1024, exploiting hollow photonic bandgap waveguide-based geometry for the first time. Here sensing has been measured by a complete switching in the direction of the outgoing beam, owing to transverse momentum oscillation phenomena. Using a 1.32 μm source and core-width of 7.25 μm, a complete switching cycle is obtained even due to a small change of ~1 nm in the core-width. Using hollow-core photonic bandgap waveguide, Talbot effect, revivals of the initial phase, oscillation in the transverse momentum along with multi-mode interference served as the backbone of the design. The ultra-sensitive multi-mode interferometric sensor based on photonic crystals will certainly open up a paradigm shift in interferometer-based sensing technologies toward device-level applications in photonic sensing/switching and related precision measurement systems.
Densely integrated active photonics is key for next generation on-chip networks for addressing both footprint and energy budget concerns. However, the weak light-matter interaction in traditional active Silicon optoelectronics mandates rather sizable device lengths. The ideal active material choice should avail high index modulation while being easily integrated into Silicon photonics platforms. Indium tin oxide (ITO) offers such functionalities and has shown promising modulation capacity recently. Interestingly, the nanometer-thin unity-strong index modulation of ITO synergistically combines …

Photonic crystals can integrate plasmonic materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO) in their structure. Exploiting ITO plasmonic properties it is possible to tune the photonic band gap of the photonic crystal upon the application of an external stimuli. In this work, we have fabricated a one-dimensional multilayer photonic crystal via radiofrequency sputtering and we have triggered its optical response with ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Upon photoexcitation we observe a change in the refractive index of indium tin oxide. Such effect has been used to create a photonic crystal that change it…
Beam combiners are important components of an optical/infrared astrophysical interferometer, with many variants as to how to optimally combine two or more beams of light to fringe-track and obtain the complex fringe visibility. One such method is the use of an integrated optics chip that can instantaneously provide the measurement of the visibility without temporal or spatial modulation of the optical path. Current asymmetric planar designs are complex, resulting in a throughput penalty, and so here we present developments into a three dimensional triangular tricoupler that can provide the req…
A method for designing physically path length matched, three-dimensional photonic circuits is described. We focus specifically on the case where all the waveguides are uniquely routed from the input to output; a problem which has not been addressed to date and allows for the waveguides to be used in interferometric measurements. Circuit elements were fabricated via the femtosecond laser direct-write technique. We demonstrate via interferometric methods that the fabricated circuits were indeed optically path length matched to within 45 um which is within the coherence length required for many a…
Ultrathin solar cells reduce material usage and allow the use of lower-quality materials thanks to their one order of magnitude smaller thickness than their conventional counterparts. However, efficient photonic light-trapping is required to harvest the incident light efficiently for an otherwise insufficient absorber thickness. Quasi-random photonic crystals are predicted to have high efficient light-trapping while being more robust under angle and thickness variations than simple photonic crystals. Here we experimentally demonstrate a light-trapping solution based on quasi-random photonic cr…
In this work, we have developed a method to generate ultra-short pulses below the Fourier limit, extending the concept previously worked in reference 1 for generating sub-diffractive Gaussian beams. Alternatively, we introduce new alternatives based on a temporally non-symmetrical interference to narrow ultrashort pulses allowing, sub-Fourier scales. The experimental setup scheme is simple and versatile being able to work with high-power laser sources and ultra-short pulses with a broad bandwidth at any central wavelength. The results presented, are promising and help to enlighten new routes a…
We propose a method for ultra-sensitive displacement and phase metrology based on the interferometric evanescent wave excitation of nano-antennas. We show that with a proper choice of nano-antenna, tiny displacements or relative phase variations can be converted into sensitive scattering direction changes in the Fourier $k$-space. These changes stem from the strong position dependence of the imaginary Poynting vector orientation within interfering evanescent waves. Using strongly-evanescent standing waves, high sensitivity is achieved in the nano-antenna's zero scattering direction, which vari…
Chiral light matter interaction enables new fundamental researches and applications of light. The interaction has traditionally faced challenges in low directionality and efficiency based on spin orbit interaction of light in microscopic waveguides. It is pivotal to exploit photonic integrated circuits to efficiently engineer photonic chiral behavior. Here, we present ultra directional high efficient chiral coupling in silicon photonic circuits based on low order to high order mode conversion and interference. We show that the directionality of chiral coupling, in principle, can approach minus…
Integrated photonic sensors can provide large scale, flexible detection schemes. Photonic crystal slabs (PCS) offer a miniaturized platform for wideband, sensitive ultrasound detection by exploiting the photoelastic effect in water. However, poor modal overlap with the sensing medium and non-negligible absorption loss of the aqueous medium have previously limited PCS sensor performance. In this study, we detail the development and optimization of a PCS-based acoustic sensor, by adding to it a low-loss high-index polymer cladding layer. Exploiting a mode-optimized TM-like optical resonance pres…
Photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE), a technique specifically developed for fabricating highquality large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), has enabled fabrication of a series of building blocks of PICs ranging from high-quality (high-Q) microresonators and low-loss waveguides to electrooptically (EO) tunable lasers and waveguide amplifiers. Aiming at high-throughput manufacturing of the PIC devices and systems, we have developed an ultra-high-speed high-resolution laser lithography fabrication system employing a high repetiti…
Integrated photonics is a powerful platform that can improve the performance and stability of optical systems, while providing low-cost, small-footprint and scalable alternatives to implementations based on free-space optics. While great progress has been made on the development of low-loss integrated photonics platforms at telecom wavelengths, visible wavelength range has received less attention. Yet, many applications utilize visible or near-visible light, including those in optical imaging, optogenetics, and quantum science and technology. Here we demonstrate an ultra-low loss integrated vi…
Microresonators (MRs) are key components in integrated optics. As a result, the estimation of their energy storage capacity as measured by the quality factor (Q) is crucial. However, in MR with high/ultra-high Q, the surface-wall roughness dominates the intrinsic Q and generates a coupling between counter-propagating modes. This splits the usual sharp single resonance and makes difficult the use of classical methods to assess Q. Here, we theoretically show that an interferometric excitation can be exploited in a Cavity Ring-Down (CRD) method to measure the ultimate Q of a MR. In fact, under su…
We demonstrate a novel method to measure the Nth-order (N=1, 2, 3, 4) interferometric autocorrelation with high sensitivity and temporal resolution. It is based on the combination of linear absorption and nonlinear detection in a superconducting nanodetector, providing much higher efficiency than methods based on all-optical nonlinearities. Its temporal resolution is only limited by the quasi-particle energy relaxation time, which is directly measured to be in the 20 ps range for the NbN films used in this work. We present a general model of interferometric autocorrelation with these nonlinear…
We demonstrate ultrasound detection with 500-$μ\mathrm{m}$-diameter photonic-crystal slab (PCS) sensors fabricated from CMOS-compatible technology. An ultrasound signal impinging a PCS sensor causes a local modulation of the refractive index (RI) of the medium (water) in which the PCS is immersed, resulting in a periodic spectral shift of the optical resonance of the PCS. The acoustic sensitivity is found to scale with the index sensitivity $S$ and quality factor $Q$. A noise equivalent pressure (NEP) of 650 Pa with averaging (7.4 Pa$/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$) and relative wavelength shifts of up t…
Light sources with ultra-low energy consumption and high performance are required to realize optical interconnects for on-chip communication. The lasers are InP-based bonded on Si and comprise a buried heterostructure active region and lateral p-i-n junction. The static characteristics and the thermal properties of the lasers have…
Photonic generation of radio-frequency signals has shown significant advantages over the electronic counterparts, allowing the high precision generation of radio-frequency carriers up to the terahertz-wave region with flexible bandwidth for radar applications. Great progress has been made in photonics-based radio-frequency waveform generation. However, the approaches that rely on sophisticated benchtop digital microwave components, such as synthesizers and digital-to-analog converters have limited achievable bandwidth and thus resolution for radar detections. In this work, we demonstrate three ultra-compact integrated-photonics devices, which are designed via a machine-learning algorithm coupled with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. Through digitizing the design domain into "binary pixels" these digital metamaterials are readily manufacturable as well. By showing a variety of devices (beamsplitters and waveguide bends), we showcase the generality of our approach. With an area footprint smaller than ${λ_0}^2$, our designs are amongst the smallest reported to-date. Our method combines machine learning with digital metamaterials to enabl…
We demonstrate generation of 7.6 fs near-UV pulses centered at 400 nm via 8-fold soliton-effect self-compression in an Ar-filled hollow-core kagomé-style photonic crystal fiber with ultrathin core walls. Analytical calculations of the effective compression length and soliton order permit adjustment of the experimental parameters, and numerical modelling of the nonlinear pulse dynamics in the fiber accurately predict the spectro-temporal profiles of the self-compressed pulses. After compensation of phase distortion introduced by the optical elements along the beam path from the fiber to the dia…
We fabricated two dimensional photonic crystal structures in zinc oxide films with focused ion beam etching. Lasing is realized in the near ultraviolet frequency at room temperature under optical pumping. From the measurement of lasing frequency and spatial profile of the lasing modes, as well as the photonic band structure calculation, we conclude that lasing occurs in the strongly localized defect modes near the edges of photonic band gap. These defect modes originate from the structure disorder unintentionally introduced during the fabrication process.
Great potential of photonic band-gap (PBG) structures for the development of continuous wave ultraviolet all-solid-state laser, including UV femtosecond pulse source, as well as for increase of output laser power at short-wave optical range is shown. The basic idea is a decrease of the laser threshold via suppression of the spontaneous emission in the active medium by means of embedding it into 2D or 3D PBG structure having the midgap frequency close to the frequency of the laser transition. Different schemes of 2D and 3D photonic crystal laser for ultraviolet range are proposed.
We studied numerically and experimentally the effects of structural disorder on the performance of ultraviolet photonic crystal slab lasers. Optical gain selectively amplifies the high-quality modes of the passive system. For these modes, the in-plane and out-of-plane leakage rates may be automatically balanced in the presence of disorder. The spontaneous optimization of in-plane and out-of-plane confinement of light in a photonic crystal slab may lead to a reduction of the lasing threshold.
We demonstrate experimentally an air-slot mode-gap photonic crystal cavity with quality factor of 15,000 and modal volume of 0.02 cubic wavelengths, based on the design of an air-slot in a width-modulated line-defect in a photonic crystal slab. The origin of the high Q air-slot cavity mode is the mode-gap effect from the slotted photonic crystal waveguide mode with negative dispersion. The high Q cavities with ultrasmall mode volume are important for applications such as cavity quantum electrodynamics, nonlinear optics and optical sensing.
Lithium Niobate on insulator (LNOI) photonics promises to combine the excellent nonlinear properties of Lithium Niobate with the high complexity achievable by high contrast waveguides. However, to date, fabrication challenges have resulted in high-loss and sidewall-angled waveguides, limiting its applicability. We report LNOI single mode waveguides with ultra low propagation loss of 0.4 dB/cm and sidewall angle of 75°. Our results open the route to a highly efficient photonic platform with applications ranging from high-speed telecommunication to quantum technology.
We demonstrate fast (up to 20 GHz), low power (5 $μW$) modulation of photonic crystal (PC) cavities in GaAs containing InAs quantum dots. Rapid modulation through blue-shifting of the cavity resonance is achieved via free carrier injection by an above-band picosecond laser pulse. Slow tuning by several linewidths due to laser-induced heating is also demonstrated.
Slow light propagation in structured materials is a highly promising approach for realizing on-chip integrated photonic devices based on enhanced optical nonlinearities. One of the most successful research avenues consists in engineering the band dispersion of light-guiding photonic crystal (PC) structures. The primary goal of such devices is to achieve slow-light operation over the largest possible bandwidth, with large group index, minimal index dispersion, and constant transmission spectrum. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of to date record high GBP in silicon-based couple…
Direct access to the electric field of light provides a subcycle view of the polarization response of matter, thus enabling sensitive metrology in physics, chemistry, and medicine. Optical-field sampling techniques take advantage of some process that lasts much less than an optical cycle of the measured light wave. Most of them rely on the generation of free electrons either by a weak extreme ultraviolet pulse or by a strong optical pulse. The ability of such techniques to detect weak signals is limited by undesirable effects associated with ionization. An alternative is all-optical methods, w…
We study the coupling between photonic molecules and waveguides in photonic crystal slab structures using finite-difference time-domain method and coupled mode theory. In a photonic molecule with two cavities, the coupling of cavity modes results in two super-modes with symmetric and anti-symmetric field distributions. When two super-modes are excited simultaneously, the energy of electric field oscillates between the two cavities. To excite and probe the energy oscillation, we integrate photonic molecule with two photonic crystal waveguides. In coupled structure, we find that the quality fact…
We demonstrate photonic crystal nanobeam cavities that support both TE- and TM-polarized modes, each with a Quality factor greater than one million and a mode volume on the order of the cubic wavelength. We show that these orthogonally polarized modes have a tunable frequency separation and a high nonlinear spatial overlap. We expect these cavities to have a variety of applications in resonance-enhanced nonlinear optics.

We demonstrate, by theory and experiment, the ultrafast tilting of the dispersion curve of a photonic-crystal waveguide following the absorption of a femtosecond pump pulse. By shaping the pump-beam cross section with a nanometric shadow mask, different waveguide eigenmodes acquire different spatial overlap with the perturbing pump, leading to a local flattening of the dispersion by up to 11 %. We find that such partial mode perturbation can be used to adiabatically compress the spectrum of a light pulse traveling through the waveguide.
We present ultrafast all-optical switching measurements of Si woodpile photonic band gap crystals. The crystals are spatially homogeneously excited, and probed by measuring reflectivity over an octave in frequency (including the telecom range) as a function of time. After 300 fs, the complete stop band has shifted to higher frequencies as a result of optically excited free carriers. The switched state relaxes quickly with a time constant of 18 ps. We present a quantitative analysis of switched spectra with theory for finite photonic crystals. The induced changes in refractive index are well de…
In the work, the new method for the design of the wavelength division multiplexer on the basis of 2D photonic crystal integrated circuit for the ultra-short pulses channel separation is proposed and investigated. For the method approbation, there was synthesized the device in which the wideband filters are used for the channel separation. As it was expected, the device effectively separates 50 fs pulse channels with 1.31 and 1.55 microns wavelengths. …

The ITU-T grid frequencies are generated by taking advantage of multiple four-wave mixing processes. We experimentally obtained 250 products spanning over 200nm by launching 03 strong pump signals. Simulations based on Split-Step Fourier Method have been carried out in order to investigate and improve the performance of this nonlinear optical device.
We demonstrate second harmonic generation in photonic crystal nanocavities fabricated in the semiconductor gallium phosphide. We observe second harmonic radiation at 750 nm with input powers of only nanowatts coupled to the cavity and conversion efficiency $P_{\rm out}/P_{\rm in, coupled}^2 = 430%/{\rm W}$. The large electronic band gap of GaP minimizes absorption loss, allowing efficient conversion. Our results are promising for integrated, low-power light sources and on-chip reduction of input power in other nonlinear processes.
We present a 1.16-\mum-radius disk cavity with ultrahigh quality (Q) factor by embedding the disk into a sunflower-type circular photonic crystal (CPC). The band gap of the CPC reduces the bending loss of the whispering-gallery mode of the disk, leading to a simulated Q of 10^7, at least one order of magnitude higher than a bare disk of the same size. The design is experimentally verified with a record high loaded Q of 7.4 \times 10^5 measured from an optimized device fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator substrate.
Resistance thermometry provides a time-tested method for taking temperature measurements. However, fundamental limits to resistance-based approaches has produced considerable interest in developing photonic temperature sensors to leverage advances in frequency metrology and to achieve greater mechanical and environmental stability. Here we show that silicon-based optical ring resonator devices can resolve temperature differences of 1 mK using the traditional wavelength scanning methodology. An even lower noise floor of 80 microkelvin for measuring temperature difference is achieved in the side…
We have developed a novel integrated platform for liquid photonics based on liquid core optical fiber (LCOF). This design is useful for realizing a position-controlled cavity in a photonic crystal. H…
Photonic crystal nanobeam cavities are versatile platforms of interest for optical communications, optomechanics, optofluidics, cavity QED, etc. In a previous work \cite{quan10}, we proposed a deterministic method to achieve ultrahigh \emph{Q} cavities. This follow-up work provides systematic analysis and verifications of the deterministic design recipe and further extends the discussion to air-mode cavities. We demonstrate designs of dielectric-mode and air-mode cavities with $Q>10^9$, as well as cavities with both high-\emph{Q} ($>10^7$) and high on-resonance transmissions ($T>95%$).
We describe the strong optomechanical dynamical interactions in ultrahigh-Q/V slot-type photonic crystal cavities. The dispersive coupling is based on a mode-gap photonic crystal cavities with light localization in an air mode with 0.02(lambda/n)3 modal volumes while preserving optical cavity Q up to 5 x 106. The mechanical mode is modeled to have fundamental resonance omega_m/2pi of 460 MHz and a quality factor Qm estimated at 12,000. For this slot-type optomechanical cavity, the dispersive coupling gom is numerically computed at up to 940 GHz/nm (Lom of 202 nm) for the fundamental optomechan…
We present ultrafast optical switching experiments on 3D photonic band gap crystals. Switching the Si inverse opal is achieved by optically exciting free carriers by a two-photon process. We …
Ultra-high frequency acoustic resonances ($\backsim$2 GHz) trapped within the glass core ($\backsim$1 $μ$m diameter) of a photonic crystal fiber are selectively excited through electrostriction using laser pulses of duration 100 ps and energy 500 pJ. Using precisely timed sequences of such driving pulses, we achieve coherent control of the acoustic resonances by constructive or destructive interference, demonstrating both enhancement and suppression of the vibrations. A sequence of 27 resonantly-timed pulses provides a 100-fold increase in the amplitude of the vibrational mode. The results are…

Low-noise frequency conversion of single photons is a critical tool in establishing fibre-based quantum networks. Furthermore, we discuss how pump tuning can mitigate realistic discrepancies in device fabrication. This enables a single highly adaptable frequency conversion interface to link disparate nodes in a quantum network via the telecoms band.
