Generating an initial condition for a Langevin equation with memory is a non trivial issue. We introduce a generalisation of the Laplace transform as a useful tool for solving this problem, in which a limit procedure may send the extension of memory effects to arbitrary times in the past. This method allows us to compute average position, work, their variances and the entropy production rate of a particle dragged in a complex fluid by an harmonic potential, which could represent the effect of moving optical tweezers. For initial conditions in equilibrium we generalise the results by van Zon and Cohen, finding the variance of the work for generic protocols of the trap. In addition, we study a particle dragged for a long time captured in an optical trap with constant velocity in a steady state. Our formulas open the door to thermodynamic uncertainty relations in systems with memory.
The generalised Langevin equation with a retarded friction and a double-well potential is solved. The random force is modelled by a multiplicative noise with long jumps. Probability density distributions converge with time to a distribution similar to a Gaussian but tails have a power-law form. Dependence of the mean first passage time on model parameters is discussed. Properties of the stochastic resonance, emerging as a peak in the plot of the spectral amplification against the temperature, are discussed for various sets of the model parameters. The amplification rises with the memory and is…
Recent advances in single particle tracking and supercomputing techniques demonstrate the emergence of normal or anomalous, viscoelastic diffusion in conjunction with non-Gaussian distributions in soft, biological, and active matter systems. We here formulate a stochastic model based on a generalised Langevin equation in which non-Gaussian shapes of the probability density function and normal or anomalous diffusion have a common origin, namely a random parametrisation of the stochastic force. We perform a detailed analytical analysis demonstrating how various types of parameter distributions f…
Bistable systems present two degenerate metastable configurations separated by an energy barrier. Thermal or quantum fluctuations can promote the transition between the configurations at a rate which depends on the dynamical properties of the local environment (i.e., a thermal bath). In the case of classical systems, strong system-bath interaction has been successfully modelled by the Generalised Langevin Equation (GLE) formalism. Here we show that the efficient GLE algorithm introduced in Phys. Rev. B 89, 134303 (2014) can be extended to include some crucial aspects of the quantum fluctuation…
The Generalised Langevin Equation (GLE) method, as developed in Ref. [Phys. Rev. B 89, 134303 (2014)], is used to calculate the dissipative dynamics of systems described at the atomic level. The GLE scheme goes beyond the commonly used bilinear coupling between the central system and the bath, and permits us to have a realistic description of both the dissipative central system and its surrounding bath. We show how to obtain the vibrational properties of a realistic bath and how to convey such properties into an extended Langevin dynamics by the use of the mapping of the bath vibrational prope…
We consider the two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Ising model on a square lattice at the critical temperature $T_c$, under Monte-Carlo spin flip dynamics. The bulk magnetisation and the magnetisation of a tagged line in the 2D Ising model, and the bulk magnetisation and the magnetisation of a tagged plane in the 3D Ising model exhibit anomalous diffusion. Specifically, their mean-square displacement increases as power-laws in time, collectively denoted as $\sim t^c$, where $c$ is the anomalous exponent. We argue that the anomalous diffusion in all these quantities for the Ising model stems …
We derive a $c-$number Generalised Langevin Equation (GLE) describing the evolution of the expectation values $\left\langle x_{i}\right\rangle_{t}$ of the atomic position operators $x_{i}$ of an open system. The latter is coupled linearly to a harmonic bath kept at a fixed temperature. The equations of motion contain a non-Markovian friction term with the classical kernel {[}L. Kantorovich - PRB 78, 094304 (2008){]} and a zero mean \emph{non-Gaussian} random force with correlation functions that depend on the initial preparation of the open system. We used a density operator formalism without …
We use a Generalised Langevin Equation (GLE) scheme to study the thermal transport of low dimensional systems. In this approach, the central classical region is connected to two realistic thermal baths kept at two different temperatures [H. Ness et al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 93}, 174303 (2016)]. We consider model Al systems, i.e. one-dimensional atomic chains connected to three-dimensional baths. The thermal transport properties are studied as a function of the chain length $N$ and the temperature difference $ΔT$ between the baths. We calculate the transport properties both in the linear response …
We investigate the nature of the effective dynamics and statistical forces obtained after integrating out nonequilibrium degrees of freedom. To be explicit, we consider the Rouse model for the conformational dynamics of an ideal polymer chain subject to steady driving. We compute the effective dynamics for one of the many monomers by integrating out the rest of the chain. The result is a generalized Langevin dynamics for which we give the memory and noise kernels and the effective force, and we discuss the inherited nonequilibrium aspects.
For reaction-diffusion processes with at most bimolecular reactants, we derive well-behaved, numerically tractable, exact Langevin equations that govern a stochastic variable related to the response field in field theory. Using duality relations, we show how the particle number and other quantities of interest can be computed. Our work clarifies long-standing conceptual issues encountered in field-theoretical approaches and paves the way for systematic numerical and theoretical analyses of reaction-diffusion problems.
We present a novel hybrid but thermodynamic approach to provide an alternative to the Langevin equation by using system-intrinsic (SI) microwork done by the Brownian particle in the kth microstate (realization). The corresponding SI-microforce is unique to the microstate and determines the microscopic equation of motion for it. Being a thermodynamic approach, the equipartition theorem is always satisfied and no additional stochastic Langevin force is needed. We determine instantaneous and long-time averages of useful quantities and thus provide a new unified approach to the fluctuating motion …
Climate science employs a hierarchy of models, trading the tractability of simplified energy balance models (EBMs) against the detail of Global Circulation Models. Since the pioneering work of Hasselmann, stochastic EBMs have allowed treatment of climate fluctuations and noise. However, it has recently been claimed that observations motivate heavy-tailed temporal response functions in global mean temperature to perturbations. Our complementary approach exploits the correspondence between Hasselmann's EBM and the original mean-reverting stochastic model in physics, Langevin's equation of 1908. …
Distributed order fractional Langevin-like equations are introduced and applied to describe anomalous diffusion without unique diffusion or scaling exponent. It is shown that these fractional Langevin equations of distributed order can be used to model the kinetics of retarding subdiffusion whose scaling exponent decreases with time, and the strongly anomalous ultraslow diffusion with mean square displacement which varies asymptoically as a power of logarithm of time.
We study the thermodynamic entropy as a Noether invariant in a stochastic process. Following the Onsager theory, we consider the Langevin equation for a thermodynamic variable in a thermally isolated system. By analyzing the Martin-Siggia-Rose-Janssen-de Dominicis action of the Langevin equation, we find that this action possesses a continuous symmetry in quasi-static processes, which leads to the thermodynamic entropy as the Noether invariant for the symmetry.
Transition of a system between two states is an important but difficult problem in natural science. In this article we study the transition problem in the framework of transition path ensemble. Using the overdamped Langevin method, we introduce the path integral formulation of the transition probability and obtain the equation for the minimum action path in the transition path space. For the effective sampling in the transition path ensemble, we derive a conditional overdamped Langevin equation. In two exactly solvable models, the free particle system and the harmonic system, we present the ex…
Subdiffusive behavior of one-dimensional stochastic systems can be described by time-subordinated Langevin equations. The corresponding probability density satisfies the time-fractional Fokker-Planck equations. In the homogeneous systems the power spectral density of the signals generated by such Langevin equations has power-law dependency on the frequency with the exponent smaller than 1. In this paper we consider nonhomogeneous systems and show that in such systems the power spectral density can have power-law behavior with the exponent equal to or larger than 1 in a wide range of intermedia…
We extend the Langevin approach to a class of driving noises whose generating processes have independent increments with super-heavy-tailed distributions. The time-dependent generalized Fokker-Planck equation that corresponds to the first-order Langevin equation driven by such a noise is derived and solved exactly. This noise generates two probabilistic states of the system, survived and absorbed, that are equivalent to those for a classical particle in an absorbing medium. The connection between the rate of absorption and the super-heavy-tailed distribution of the increments is established an…
Approximate analytical solutions of the modified Langevin equation are obtained. These solutions are relatively simple and enough accurate. They are illustrated by considering a mean-field model of a system with interacting superparamagnetic particles. Within the framework of this model system we derived analytical approximate formulas for the temperature dependencies of the saturation and remnant magnetization, coercive force, initial magnetic susceptibility as well as for the law of approach to saturation. We obtained also some exact analytical relationships for the coercive force. We found …

We statistically examine long time sequences of Brownian motion for a nonequilibrium version of the Rayleigh piston model and confirm that the third cumulant of a long-time displacement for the nonequilibrium Brownian motion linearly increases with the observation time interval. We identify a multiplicative Langevin equation that can reproduce the cumulants of the long-time displacement up to at least the third order, as well as its mean, variance and skewness. The identified Langevin equation involves a velocity-dependent friction coefficient that breaks the time-reversibility and may act as …
Usually discussions on the question of interpretation in the Langevin equation with multiplicative white noise are limited to the Ito and Stratonovich prescriptions. In this work, a Langevin equation with multiplicative white noise and its Fokker-Planck equation are considered. From this Fokker-Planck equation a connection between the stationary solution and the Tsallis distribution is obtained for different orders of prescription in discretization rule for the stochastic integrals; the Tsallis index $q$ and the prescription parameter (λ) are determined with the drift and diffusion coefficient…
The problem of effective equations is reviewed and discussed. Starting from the classical Langevin equation, we show how it can be generalized to Hamiltonian systems with non-standard kinetic terms. A numerical method for inferring effective equations from data is discussed; this protocol allows to check the validity of our results. In addition we show that, with a suitable treatment of time series, such protocol can be used to infer effective models from experimental data. We briefly discuss the practical and conceptual difficulties of a pure data-driven approach in the building of models.
We present a heuristic derivation of Gaussian approximations for stochastic chemical reaction systems with distributed delay. In particular we derive the corresponding chemical Langevin equation. Due to the non-Markovian character of the underlying dynamics these equations are integro-differential equations, and the noise in the Gaussian approximation is coloured. Following on from the chemical Langevin equation a further reduction leads to the linear-noise approximation. We apply the formalism to a delay variant of the celebrated Brusselator model, and show how it can be used to characterise …
The validity of the Langevin equation (both classical and quantum) is studied in cases when not all the equations of motion are linear. In particular, a model is studied in which the interaction is bilinear in the environment variables. We conclude that the equation is valid only for frequencies close to the frequency of the system alone. If the equation of motion of the system alone is nonlinear, we are unable to find a condition for the validity of the Langevin equation.
We address the problem of a microscopic derivation of the Langevin equation for a weakly relativistic Brownian particle. A non-covariant Hamiltonian model is adopted, in which the free motion of particles is described relativistically, while their interaction is treated classically, i.e. by means of action-to-a-distance interaction potentials. Relativistic corrections to the classical Langevin equation emerge as nonlinear dissipation terms and originate from the nonlinear dependence of the relativistic velocity on momentum. On the other hand, similar nonlinear dissipation forces also appear as…
We recently showed that the dynamics of coarse-grained observables in systems out of thermal equilibrium are governed by the non-stationary generalized Langevin equation [J. Chem. Phys. 147, 214110 (2017), J. Chem. Phys. 150, 174118 (2019)]. The derivation we presented in these two articles was based on the assumption that the dynamics of the microscopic degrees of freedom was deterministic. Here we extend the discussion to stochastic microscopic dynamics. The fact that the non-stationary Generalized Langevin Equation also holds for stochastic processes implies that methods designed to estimat…
A generalized Langevin equation with fluctuating diffusivity (GLEFD) is proposed, and it is shown that the GLEFD satisfies a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation. If the memory kernel is a power law, the GLEFD exhibits anomalous subdiffusion, non-Gaussianity, and stretched-exponential relaxation. The case in which the memory kernel is given by a single exponential function is also investigated as an analytically tractable example. In particular, the mean-square displacement and the self-intermediate-scattering function of this system show plateau structures. A numerical scheme to integ…
The non--static generalized Langevin equation and its corresponding Fokker--Planck equation for the position of a viscous fluid particle were solved in closed form for a time dependent external force. Its solution for a constant external force was obtained analytically. The non--Markovian stochastic differential equation, associated to the dynamics of the position under a colored noise, was then applied to the description of the dynamics and persistence time of particles constrained within absorbing barriers. Comparisons with molecular dynamics were very satisfactory.
We consider the usual Langevin equation depending on an internal time. This parameter is substituted by a first passage time of a self-similar Markov process. Then the Gaussian process is parent, and the hitting time process is directing. The probability to find the resulting process at the real time is defined by the integral relationship between the probability densities of the parent and directing processes. The corresponding master equation becomes the fractional Fokker-Planck equation. We show that the resulting process has non-Markovian properties, all its moments are finite, the fluctua…
The generalized Langevin equation is widely used to model the influence of a heat bath upon a reactive system. This equation will here be studied from a geometric point of view. A dynamical phase space that represents all possible states of the system will be constructed, the generalized Langevin equation will be formally rewritten as a pair of coupled ordinary differential equations, and the fundamental geometric structures in phase space will be described. It will be shown that the phase space itself and its geometric structure depend critically on the preparation of the system: A system tha…
The Bayesian data analysis framework has been proven to be a systematic and effective method of parameter inference and model selection for stochastic processes. In this work we introduce an information content model check which may serve as a goodness-of-fit, like the chi-square procedure, to complement conventional Bayesian analysis. We demonstrate this extended Bayesian framework on a system of Langevin equations, where coordinate dependent mobilities and measurement noise hinder the normal mean squared displacement approach.
Diffusion in nonhomogeneous media is described by a dynamical process driven by a general Levy noise and subordinated to a random time; the subordinator depends on the position. This problem is approximated by a multiplicative process subordinated to a random time: it separately takes into account effects related to the medium structure and the memory. Density distributions and moments are derived from the solutions of the corresponding Langevin equation and compared with the numerical calculations for the exact problem. Both subdiffusion and enhanced diffusion are predicted. Distribution of t…
It is known that in the regime of superlinear diffusion, characterized by zero integral friction (vanishing integral of the memory function), the generalized Langevin equation may have non-ergodic solutions which do not relax to equilibrium values. It is shown that the equation may have non-ergodic (non-stationary) solutions even if the integral of the memory function is finite and diffusion is normal.
We show how a relativistic Langevin equation can be derived from a Lorentz-covariant version of the Caldeira-Leggett particle-bath Lagrangian. In one of its limits, we identify the obtained equation with the Langevin equation used in contemporary extensions of statistical mechanics to the near-light-speed motion of a Brownian particle in non-relativistic dissipative fluids. The proposed framework provides a more rigorous and first-principles form of the Langevin equation often quoted or postulated as ansatz in previous works. We then refine the aforementioned results by considering more terms …
From microscopic models, a Langevin equation can in general be derived only as an approximation. Two possible conditions to validate this approximation are studied. One is, for a linear Langevin equation, that the frequency of the Fourier transform should be close to the natural frequency of the system. The other is by the assumption of `slow' variables. We test this method by comparison with an exactly soluble model, and point out its limitations. We base our discussion on two approaches. The first is a direct, elementary treatment of Senitzky. The second is via a generalized Langevn equation…
We present an efficient method for simulating a stationary Gaussian noise with an arbitrary covariance function and then study numerically the impact of time-correlated noise on the time evolution of a 1 + 1 dimensional generalized Langevin equation by comparing also to analytical results. Finally, we apply our method to the generalized Langevin equation with an external harmonic and double-well potential.
Non-Markovian stochastic Langevin-like equations of motion are compared to their corresponding Markovian (local) approximations. The validity of the local approximation for these equations, when contrasted with the fully nonlocal ones, is analyzed in details. The conditions for when the equation in a local form can be considered a good approximation are then explicitly specified. We study both the cases of additive and multiplicative noises, including system dependent dissipation terms, according to the Fluctuation-Dissipation theorem.
