We study a single station two-stage reneging queue with Poisson arrivals, exponential services, and two levels of exponential reneging behaviors, extending the popular Erlang A model that assumes a constant reneging rate. We derive approximate analytical formulas representing performance measures for our two-stage queue following the Markov chain decomposition approach. Our formulas not only give accurate results spanning the heavy-traffic to the light-traffic regimes, but also provide insight into capacity decisions.
For the M/M/1+M model at the law-of-large-numbers scale, the long run reneging count per unit time does not depend on the individual (i.e., per customer) reneging rate. This paradoxical statement has a simple proof. Less obvious is a large deviations analogue of this fact, stated as follows: The decay rate of the probability that the long run reneging count per unit time is atypically large or atypically small does not depend on the individual reneging rate. In this paper, the sample path large deviations principle for the model is proved and the rate function is computed. Next, large time asy…
This work considers a many-server queueing system in which impatient customers with i.i.d., generally distributed service times and i.i.d., generally distributed patience times enter service in the order of arrival and abandon the queue if the time before possible entry into service exceeds the patience time. The dynamics of the system is represented in terms of a pair of measure-valued processes, one that keeps track of the waiting times of the customers in queue and the other that keeps track of the amounts of time each customer being served has been in service. Under mild assumptions, essen…
We study a double-ended queue which consists of two classes of customers. Whenever there is a pair of customers from both classes, they are matched and leave the system immediately. The matching follows first-come-first-serve principle. If a customer from one class cannot be matched immediately, he/she will stay in a queue and wait for the upcoming arrivals from the other class. Thus there cannot be non-zero numbers of customers from both classes simultaneously in the system. We also assume that each customer can leave the queue without being matched because of impatience. The arrival processe…
This paper presents a heavy-traffic analysis of the behavior of a single-server queue under an Earliest-Deadline-First (EDF) scheduling policy in which customers have deadlines and are served only until their deadlines elapse. The performance of the system is measured by the fraction of reneged work (the residual work lost due to elapsed deadlines) which is shown to be minimized by the EDF policy. The evolution of the lead time distribution of customers in queue is described by a measure-valued process. The heavy traffic limit of this (properly scaled) process is shown to be a deterministic fu…
In this paper we consider a single-server, cyclic polling system with switch-over times and Poisson arrivals. The service disciplines that are discussed, are exhaustive and gated service. The novel contribution of the present paper is that we consider the reneging of customers at polling instants. In more detail, whenever the server starts or ends a visit to a queue, some of the customers waiting in each queue leave the system before having received service. The probability that a certain customer leaves the queue, depends on the queue in which the customer is waiting, and on the location of t…
The large-time behavior of a nonlinearly coupled pair of measure-valued transport equations with discontinuous boundary conditions, parameterized by a positive real-valued parameter $λ$, is considered. These equations describe the hydrodynamic or fluid limit of many-server queues with reneging (with traffic intensity $λ$), which model phenomena in diverse disciplines, including biology and operations research. For a broad class of reneging distributions with finite mean and service distributions with finite mean and hazard rate function that is either decreasing or bounded away from zero and i…
We consider a tandem queue with coupled processors, which is subject to global breakdowns. When the network is in the operating mode and both queues are non empty, the total service capacity is shared among the stations according to fixed proportions. When one of the stations becomes empty, the total service capacity is given to the non-empty station. Moreover, arrival rates depend on the state of the network. The system is described by a Markov modulated random walk in the quarter plane representing the number of jobs in the two stations and the state of the network. By applying the generatin…
We propose a method based on probabilistic arguments to study the convexity of the autocorrelation function of processes associated with a single server queue. To illustrate the power of the method we apply it in two cases: to the workload process seen by the customers of a GI/GI/1 queue, and to the workload process of a fluid queue fed by a general Lévy process.
We study a generalization of the $M/G/1$ system (denoted by $rM/G/1$) with independent and identically distributed (iid) service times and with an arrival process whose arrival rate $λ_0f(r)$ depends on the remaining service time $r$ of the current customer being served. We derive a natural stability condition and provide a stationary analysis under it both at service completion times (of the queue length process) and in continuous time (of the queue length and the residual service time). In particular, we show that the stationary measure of queue length at service completion times is equal to…
A result of Ward and Glynn (2005) asserts that the sequence of scaled offered waiting time processes of the $GI/GI/1+GI$ queue converges weakly to a reflected Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process (ROU) in the positive real line, as the traffic intensity approaches one. As a consequence, the stationary distribution of a ROU process, which is a truncated normal, should approximate the scaled stationary distribution of the offered waiting time in a $GI/GI/1+GI$ queue; however, no such result has been proved. We prove the aforementioned convergence, and the convergence of the moments, in heavy traffic, thus…
We provide the first algorithm that under minimal assumptions allows to simulate the stationary waiting-time sequence of a single-server queue backwards in time, jointly with the input processes of the queue (inter-arrival and service times). The single-server queue is useful in applications of DCFTP (Dominated Coupling From The Past), which is a well known protocol for simulation without bias from steady-state distributions. Our algorithm terminates in finite time assuming only finite mean of the inter-arrival and service times. In order to simulate the single-server queue in stationarity unt…
We study the asymptotics of the stationary sojourn time Z of a "typical customer" in a tandem of single-server queues. It is shown that, in a certain "intermediate" region of light-tailed service time distributions, Z may take a large value mostly due to a large value of a single service time of one of customers. Arguments used in the paper allow us to obtain also an elementary proof of the logarithmic asymptotics for the tail distribution of the stationary sojourn time in the whole class of light-tailed distributions.
We discuss a single-server multi-station alternating queue where the preparation times and the service times are auto- and cross-correlated. We examine two cases. In the first case, preparation and service times depend on a common discrete time Markov chain. In the second case, we assume that the service times depend on the previous preparation time through their joint Laplace transform. The waiting time process is directly analysed by solving a Lindley-type equation via transform methods. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the effect of the autocorrelation of and the cross-correla…
In this paper we present a stability criterion for finite measure-valued stochastic recursions, generalizing Loynes's Theorem to spaces of measures. This result provides conditions for the reach of a "total stationary state" for the queue with an infinity of servers and the single-server SRPT queue. Indeed, we give in both cases a condition of existence of a stationary measure-valued recursive sequence characterizing the queueing system exhaustively.
In this paper, we analyze a two-queue random time-limited Markov modulated polling model. In the first part of the paper, we investigate the fluid version: Fluid arrives at the two queues as two independent flows with deterministic rate. There is a single server that serves both queues at constant speeds. The server spends an exponentially distributed amount of time in each queue. After the completion of such a visit time to one queue, the server instantly switches to the other queue, i.e., there is no switchover time. For this model, we first derive the Laplace-Stieltjes Transform (LST) of th…
We provide power series approximations for a structured batch arrival single server retrial system with two infinite capacity weighted fair orbit queues, i.e., the re-transmission rate of an orbit depends on the state of the other orbit queue. We consider both exponential and arbitrary distributed service times. In both cases we obtain power series expansions of the generating functions of the stationary joint orbit queue-length distributions, and provide a recursive approach to calculate their coefficients. We also show how to obtain the generating function of the stationary joint orbit queue…
The mathematics of the finite single server queue with Poisson input and semi-Markov service times($M/SM/1/b$) is similar to that used for $BMAP/G/1/b$ systems. This observation results in new analytical formulas for a queue size in the $M/SM/1/b$ system. Both stationary and the transient solutions are considered
The main target of this paper is to present the Markov chain C that, not giving explicitly the queue lengths stationary probabilities, has the necessary information to its determination for open networks of queues with several classes of customers and exponential service times, allowing to overcome ingeniously this problem. The situation for closed networks, in the same conditions, much easier is also presented.
We consider Markovian multiserver retrial queues where a blocked customer has two opportunities for abandonment: at the moment of blocking or at the departure epoch from the orbit. In this queueing system, the number of customers in the system (servers and buffer) and that in the orbit form a level-dependent quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) process whose stationary distribution is expressed in terms of a sequence of rate matrices. Using a simple perturbation technique and a matrix analytic method, we derive Taylor series expansion for nonzero elements of the rate matrices with respect to the number…
Motivated by a capacity allocation problem within a finite planning period, we conduct a transient analysis of a single-server queue with Lévy input. From a cost minimization perspective, we investigate the error induced by using stationary congestion measures as opposed to time-dependent measures. Invoking recent results from fluctuation theory of Lévy processes, we derive a refined cost function, that accounts for transient effects. This leads to a corrected capacity allocation rule for the transient single-server queue. Extensive numerical experiments indicate that the cost reductions achie…
We investigate the transient and stationary queue-length distributions of a class of service systems with correlated service times. The classical $M^X/G/1$ queue with semi-Markov service times is the most prominent example in this class and serves as a vehicle to display our results. The sequence of service times is governed by a modulating process $J(t)$. The state of $J(\cdot)$ at a service initiation time determines the joint distribution of the subsequent service duration and the state of $J(\cdot)$ at the next service initiation. Several earlier works have imposed technical conditions, on…
We consider GI/Ph/n+M parallel-server systems with a renewal arrival process, a phase-type service time distribution, n homogenous servers, and an exponential patience time distribution with positive rate. We show that in the Halfin-Whitt regime, the sequence of stationary distributions corresponding to the normalized state processes is tight. As a consequence, we establish an interchange of heavy traffic and steady state limits for GI/Ph/n+M queues.
In this paper we investigate Gaussian queues in the light-traffic and in the heavy-traffic regime. The setting considered is that of a centered Gaussian process $X\equiv\{X(t):t\in\mathbb R\}$ with stationary increments and variance function $σ^2_X(\cdot)$, equipped with a deterministic drift $c>0$, reflected at 0: \[Q_X^{(c)}(t)=\sup_{-\infty<s\le t}(X(t)-X(s)-c(t-s)).\] We study the resulting stationary workload process $Q^{(c)}_X\equiv\{Q_X^{(c)}(t):t\ge0\}$ in the limiting regimes $c\to 0$ (heavy traffic) and $c\to\infty$ (light traffic). The primary contribution is that we show for both l…
We consider a pair of coupled queues driven by independent spectrally-positive Levy processes. With respect to the bi-variate workload process this framework includes both the coupled processor model and the two-server fluid network with independent Levy inputs. We identify the joint transform of the stationary workload distribution in terms of Wiener-Hopf factors corresponding to two auxiliary Levy processes with explicit Laplace exponents. We reinterpret and extend the ideas of Cohen and Boxma (1983) to provide a general and uniform result with a neat transform expression.
The paper analyzes the performance of tandem network of polling queue with setups. For a system with two-products and two-stations, we propose a new approach based on a partially-collapsible state-space characterization to reduce state-space complexity. In this approach, the size of the state-space is varied depending on the information needed to determine buffer levels and waiting times. We evaluate system performance under different system setting and comment on the numerical accuracy of the approach as well as provide managerial insights. Numerical results show that approach yields reliable…
A two-class Processor-Sharing queue with one impatient class is studied. Local exponential decay rates for its stationary distribution (N, M) are established in the heavy traffic regime where the arrival rate of impatient customers grows proportionally to a large factor A. This regime is characterized by two time-scales, so that no general Large Deviations result is applicable. In the framework of singular perturbation methods, we instead assume that an asymptotic expansion of the solution of associated Kolmogorov equations exists for large A and derive it in the form P(N = Ax, M = Ay) ~ g(x,y…
We analyze an M/M/1 queue with a service discipline in which customers, upon arriving when the server is busy, search a sequence of stations for a vacant station at which to wait, and in which the server, upon becoming free when one or more customers are waiting, searches the stations in the same order for a station occupied by a customer to serve. We show how to find complete asymptotic expansions for all the moments of the waiting time in the heavy traffic limit. We show in particular that the variance of the waiting time for this discipline is more similar to that of last-come-first-served …
We study a sequence of single server queues with customer abandonment (GI/GI/1+GI) under heavy traffic. The patience time distributions vary with the sequence, which allows for a wider scope of applications. It is known ([20, 18]) that the sequence of scaled offered waiting time processes converges weakly to a reflecting diffusion process with non-linear drift, as the traffic intensity approaches one. In this paper, we further show that the sequence of stationary distributions and moments of the offered waiting times, with diffusion scaling, converge to those of the limit diffusion process. Th…
This work deals with the stationary analysis of two-dimensional partially homogeneous nearest-neighbour random walks. Such type of random walks are characterized by the fact that the one-step transition probabilities are functions of the state-space. We show that its stationary behaviour is investigated by solving a finite system of linear equations, two matrix functional equations, and a functional equation with the aid of the theory of Riemann (-Hilbert) boundary value problems. This work is strongly motivated by emerging applications in flow level performance of wireless networks that give …
