Transfer learning enables solving a specific task having limited data by using the pre-trained deep networks trained on large-scale datasets. Typically, while transferring the learned knowledge from source task to the target task, the last few layers are fine-tuned (re-trained) over the target dataset. However, these layers are originally designed for the source task that might not be suitable for the target task. In this paper, we introduce a mechanism for automatically tuning the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for improved transfer learning. The pre-trained CNN layers are tuned with the knowledge from target data using Bayesian Optimization. First, we train the final layer of the base CNN model by replacing the number of neurons in the softmax layer with the number of classes involved in the target task. Next, the pre-trained CNN is tuned automatically by observing the classification performance on the validation data (greedy criteria). To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, experiments are conducted on three benchmark datasets, e.g., CalTech-101, CalTech-256, and Stanford Dogs. The classification results obtained through the proposed AutoTune method outperforms the standard baseline transfer learning methods over the three datasets by achieving $95.92\%$, $86.54\%$, and $84.67\%$ accuracy over CalTech-101, CalTech-256, and Stanford Dogs, respectively. The experimental results obtained in this study depict that tuning of the pre-trained CNN layers with the knowledge from the target dataset confesses better transfer learning ability. Current practice in convolutional neural networks (CNN) remains largely bottom-up and the role of top-down process in CNN for pattern analysis and visual inference is not very clear. In this paper, we propose a new method for structured labeling by developing convolutional pseudo-prior (ConvPP) on the ground-truth labels. Our method has several interesting properties: (1) compared with classical machine learning algorithms like CRFs and Structural SVM, ConvPP automatically learns rich convolutional kernels to capture both short- and long- range contexts; (2) compared with cascade classifiers l…
This paper introduces a new approach to automatically quantify the severity of knee OA using X-ray images. Automatically quantifying knee OA severity involves two steps: first, automatically localizing the knee joints; next, classifying the localized knee joint images. We introduce a new approach to automatically detect the knee joints using a fully convolutional neural network (FCN). We train convolutional neural networks (CNN) from scratch to automatically quantify the knee OA severity optimizing a weighted ratio of two loss functions: categorical cross-entropy and mean-squared loss. This jo…

This chapter presents the investigations and the results of feature learning using convolutional neural networks to automatically assess knee osteoarthritis (OA) severity and the associated clinical and diagnostic features of knee OA from X-ray images. Also, this chapter demonstrates that feature learning in a supervised manner is more effective than using conventional handcrafted features for automatic detection of knee joints and fine-grained knee OA image classification. In the general machine learning approach to automatically assess knee OA severity, the first step is to localize the regi…

As a mature technology, Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) is now widely employed in detecting rebar and other embedded elements in concrete structures. Manually recognizing rebar from GPR data is a time-consuming and error-prone procedure. Although there are several approaches to automatically detect rebar, it is still challenging to find a high resolution and efficient method for different rebar arrangements, especially for closely spaced rebar meshes. As an improved Convolution Neural Network (CNN), AlexNet shows superiority over traditional methods in image recognition domain. Thus, this paper…
Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have been very successful in skeleton-based human action recognition where the sequence of skeletons is modeled as a graph. However, most of the GCN-based methods in this area train a deep feed-forward network with a fixed topology that leads to high computational complexity and restricts their application in low computation scenarios. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically find a compact and problem-specific topology for spatio-temporal graph convolutional networks in a progressive manner. We have developed and trained a convolutional neural network to automatically and simultaneously segment optic disc, fovea and blood vessels. Fundus images were normalised before segmentation was performed to enforce consistency in background lighting and contrast. For every effective point in the fundus image, our algorithm extracted three channels of input from the neighbourhood of the point and forward the response across the 7 layer network. In average, our segmentation achieved an accuracy of 92.68 percent on the testing set from Drive database.
Since the convolutional neural networks are often trained with redundant parameters, it is possible to reduce redundant kernels or filters to obtain a compact network without dropping the classification accuracy. In this paper, we propose a filter pruning method using the hierarchical group sparse regularization. It is shown in our previous work that the hierarchical group sparse regularization is effective in obtaining sparse networks in which filters connected to unnecessary channels are automatically close to zero. Here, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) not only to classify images, but also to optimize the physical layout of the imaging device itself. We increase the classification accuracy of a microscope's recorded images by merging an optical model of image formation into the pipeline of a CNN. The resulting network …
Over the last couple of years, deep learning and especially convolutional neural networks have become one of the work horses of computer vision. One limiting factor for the applicability of supervised deep learning to more areas is the need for large, manually labeled datasets. In this paper we propose an easy to implement method we call guided labeling, which automatically determines which samples from an unlabeled dataset should be labeled. We show that using this procedure, the amount of samples that need to be labeled is reduced considerably in comparison to labeling images arbitrarily.
The severity of knee osteoarthritis is graded using the 5-point Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) scale where healthy knees are assigned grade 0, and the subsequent grades 1-4 represent increasing severity of the affliction. Although several methods have been proposed in recent years to develop models that can automatically predict the KL grade from a given radiograph, most models have been developed and evaluated on datasets not sourced from India. These models fail to perform well on the radiographs of Indian patients. In this paper, we propose a novel method using convolutional neural networks to auto…

Image representation of time-series introduces different feature types that are not available for 1D signals, and therefore TSC can be treated as texture image recognition task. Several recent works also automatically learn the features via directly exploiting Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). However, it may be insufficient to fully capture the intrinsic attributes of hazy images. To obtain effective features for single image dehazing, this paper p…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are state-of-the-art models for many image classification tasks. However, to recognize cancer subtypes automatically, training a CNN on gigapixel resolution Whole Slide Tissue Images (WSI) is currently computationally impossible.
