We study the metastable minima of the Curie-Weiss Potts model with three states, as a function of the inverse temperature, and for arbitrary vector-valued external fields. Extending the classic work of Ellis/Wang and Wang we use singularity theory to provide the global structure of metastable (or local) minima. In particular, we show that the free energy has up to four local minimizers (some of which may at the same time be global) and describe the bifurcation geometry of their transitions under variation of the parameters.
We extend the main theorem of arXiv:1301.6911 about the fluctuations in the Curie-Weiss model of SOC. We present a short proof using the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation with the self-normalized sum of the random variables.
We discuss a Curie-Weiss model with two groups in the critical regime. This is the region where the central limit theorem does not hold any more but the mean magnetization still goes to zero as the number of spins grows. We show that the total magnetization normalized by $N^{3/4}$ converges to a non-trivial distribution which is not Gaussian, just as in the single-group Curie-Weiss model.
We analyze the Glauber dynamics for a bi-populated Curie-Weiss model. We obtain the limiting behavior of the empirical averages in the limit of infinitely many particles. We then characterize the phase space of the model in absence of magnetic field and we show that several phase transitions in the inter-groups interaction strength occur.
In this paper we study the moderate deviations for the magnetization of critical Curie-Weiss model. Chen, Fang and Shao considered a similar problem for non-critical model by using Stein method. By direct and simple arguments based on Laplace method, we provide an explicit formula of the error and deduce a Cramér-type result.
We build and study a multidimensional version of the Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality we have designed in arXiv:1301.6911. For symmetric distributions satisfying some integrability condition, we prove that the sum $S_n$ of the randoms vectors in the model has a typical critical behaviour. The fluctuations are of order $n^{3/4}$ and the limiting law has a density proportional to the exponential of a fourth-degree polynomial.
We study a multi-group version of the mean-field or Curie-Weiss spin model. For this model, we show how, analogously to the classical (single-group) model, the three temperature regimes are defined. Then we use the method of moments to determine for each regime how the vector of the group magnetisations behaves asymptotically. Some possible applications to social or political sciences are discussed.
We define a multi-group version of the mean-field spin model, also called Curie-Weiss model. It is known that, in the high temperature regime of this model, a central limit theorem holds for the vector of suitably scaled group magnetisations, that is the sum of spins belonging to each group. In this article, we prove a local central limit theorem for the group magnetisations in the high temperature regime.
We pursue the study of the Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality we designed in arXiv:1301.6911. We extend our results to more general interaction functions and we prove that, for a class of symmetric distributions satisfying a Cramér condition $(C)$ and some integrability hypothesis, the sum $S_{n}$ of the random variables behaves as in the typical critical generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model. The fluctuations are of order $n^{3/4}$ and the limiting law is $k \exp(-λx^{4})\,dx$ where $k$ and $λ$ are suitable positive constants. In arXiv:1301.6911 we obtained these results only for d…
In this paper, we introduce a Markov process whose unique invariant distribution is the Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality (SOC) we designed in arXiv:1301.6911. In the Gaussian case, we prove rigorously that it is a dynamical model of SOC: the fluctuations of the sum $S_{n}(\,\cdot\,)$ of the process evolve in a time scale of order $\sqrt{n}$ and in a space scale of order $n^{3/4}$ and the limiting process is the solution of a "critical" stochastic differential equation.
This paper studies a generalization of the Curie-Weiss model (the Ising model on a complete graph) to quantum mechanics. Using a natural probabilistic representation of this model, we give a complete picture of the phase diagram of the model in the parameters of inverse temperature and transverse field strength. Further analysis computes the critical exponent for the decay of the order parameter in the approach to the critical curve and gives useful stability properties of a variational problem associated with the representation.
We discuss a Curie-Weiss model with two groups with different coupling constants within and between groups. For the total magnetisations in each group, we show bivariate laws of large numbers and a central limit theorem which is valid in the high temperature regime. In the critical regime, the total magnetisation normalised by $N^{3/4}$ converges to a non-trivial distribution which is not Gaussian, just as in the single-group Curie-Weiss model. Finally, we prove a kind of a `law of large numbers' in the low temperature regime, more precisely we prove that the empirical magnetisation converges …
Hochstättler, Kirsch, and Warzel showed that the semicircle law holds for generalized Curie-Weiss matrix ensembles at or above the critical temperature. We extend their result to the case of subcritical temperatures for which the correlations between the matrix entries are stronger. Nevertheless, one may use the concept of approximately uncorrelated ensembles that was first introduced in the paper mentioned above. In order to do so one needs to remove the average magnetization of the entries by an appropriate modification of the ensemble that turns out to be of rank 1 thus not changing the lim…
We try to design a simple model exhibiting self-organized criticality, which is amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. To this end, we modify the generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model by implementing an automatic control of the inverse temperature. For a class of symmetric distributions whose density satisfies some integrability conditions, we prove that the sum $S_n$ of the random variables behaves as in the typical critical generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model. The fluctuations are of order $n^{3/4}$, and the limiting law is $C\exp(-λx^4)\,dx$ where $C$ and $λ$ are suitable positive cons…
In this paper we study the metastable behavior of one of the simplest disordered spin system, the random field Curie-Weiss model. We will show how the potential theoretic approach can be used to prove sharp estimates on capacities and metastable exit times also in the case when the distribution of the random field is continuous. Previous work was restricted to the case when the random field takes only finitely many values, which allowed the reduction to a finite dimensional problem using lumping techniques. Here we produce the first genuine sharp estimates in a context where entropy is importa…
In this paper, we thoroughly analyze the energy landscape of the Curie-Weiss-Potts model, which is a ferromagnetic spin system consisting of q $\ge$ 3 spins defined on complete graphs. In particular, for the Curie-Weiss-Potts model with q $\ge$ 3 spins and zero external field, we completely characterize all critical temperatures and phase transitions in view of the global structure of the energy landscape. We observe that there are three critical temperatures and four different regimes for q < 5, whereas there are four critical temperatures and five different regimes for q $\ge$ 5. Our analysi…
We try to design a simple model exhibiting self-organized criticality, which is amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. To this end, we modify the generalized Ising Curie-Weiss model by implementing an automatic control of the inverse temperature. With the help of exact computations, we show that, in the case of a centered Gaussian measure with positive variance $σ^{2}$, the sum $S_n$ of the random variables has fluctuations of order $n^{3/4}$ and that $S_n/n^{3/4}$ converges to the distribution $C \exp(-x^{4}/(4σ^4))\,dx$ where $C$ is a suitable positive constant.
We consider the Ising model on a dense Erdős--Rényi random graph, $\mathcal G(N,p)$, with $p>0$ fixed---equivalently, a disordered Curie--Weiss Ising model with $\mbox{Ber}(p)$ couplings---at zero temperature. The disorder may induce local energy minima in addition to the two uniform ground states. In this paper we prove that, starting from a typical initial configuration, the zero-temperature dynamics avoids all such local minima and absorbs into a predetermined one of the two uniform ground states. We relate this to the local MINCUT problem on dense random graphs; namely with high probabilit…
By using a formal analogy between statistical mechanics of mean field spin systems and analytical mechanics of viscous liquids -at first pointed out by Francesco Guerra, then recently developed by the authors- we give the thermodynamic limit of the free energy and the critical behavior of Curie Weiss models for a certain class of generalized spin variables. Then, with the same techniques, we give a complete picture of the bipartite Curie-Weiss model, dealing with the same class of generalized spins. Ultimately we analyze further the existence of a minmax principle for the latter which mirrors …
We consider a spin system with pure two spin Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Hamiltonian with Curie-Weiss interaction. The model where the spins are spherically symmetric was considered by \citet{Baiklee16} and \citet{Baikleewu18} which shows a two dimensional phase transition with respect to temperature and the coupling constant. In this paper we prove a result analogous to \citet{Baiklee16} in the "paramagnetic regime" when the spins are i.i.d. Rademacher. We prove the free energy in this case is asymptotically Gaussian and can be approximated by a suitable linear spectral statistics. Unlike the sph…
We study the critical behavior for inhomogeneous versions of the Curie-Weiss model, where the coupling constant $J_{ij}(β)$ for the edge $ij$ on the complete graph is given by $J_{ij}(β)=βw_iw_j/(\sum_{k\in[N]}w_k)$. We call the product form of these couplings the rank-1 inhomogeneous Curie-Weiss model. This model also arises (with inverse temperature $β$ replaced by $\sinh(β)$) from the annealed Ising model on the generalized random graph. We assume that the vertex weights $(w_i)_{i\in[N]}$ are regular, in the sense that their empirical distribution converges and the second moment converges a…
The propagation of molecular chaos, a tool of classical kinetic theory, is generalized to apply to quantum systems of distinguishable particles. We prove that the Curie-Weiss model of ferromagnetism propagates molecular chaos and derive the effective dynamics of a single-spin state in the mean-field limit. Our treatment differs from the traditional approach to mean-field spin models in that it concerns the dynamics of single-particle states instead of the dynamics of infinite-particle states.
A single-sort continuum Curie-Weiss system of interacting particles is studied. The particles are placed in the space $\mathbb{R}^d$ divided into congruent cubic cells. For a region $V\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ consisting of $N\in \mathbb{N}$ cells, every two particles contained in $V$ attract each other with intensity $J_1/N$. The particles contained in the same cell are subjected to binary repulsion with intensity $J_2>J_1$. For fixed values of the temperature, the interaction intensities, and the chemical potential the thermodynamic phase is defined as a probability measure on the space of occup…
An analog of the continuum Widom-Rowlinson model is introduced and studied. Its two-component version is a gas of point particles of types 0 and 1 placed in $\mathds{R}^d$, in which like particles do not interact and unlike particles contained in a vessel of volume $V$ repel each other with intensity $a/V$. The one-component version is a gas of particles with multi-particle interactions of Curie-Weiss type. Its thermodynamic behavior is obtained by integrating out the coordinates of one of the components of the two-component version. In the grand canonical setting, a rigorous theory of phase t…
Let $(W,W')$ be an exchangeable pair. Assume that \[E(W-W'|W)=g(W)+r(W),\] where $g(W)$ is a dominated term and $r(W)$ is negligible. Let $G(t)=\int_0^tg(s)\,ds$ and define $p(t)=c_1e^{-c_0G(t)}$, where $c_0$ is a properly chosen constant and $c_1=1/\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-c_0G(t)}\,dt$. Let $Y$ be a random variable with the probability density function $p$. It is proved that $W$ converges to $Y$ in distribution when the conditional second moment of $(W-W')$ given $W$ satisfies a law of large numbers. A Berry-Esseen type bound is also given. We use this technique to obtain a Berry-Esseen er…
In this contribution we give a pedagogic introduction to the newly introduced adaptive interpolation method to prove in a simple and unified way replica formulas for Bayesian optimal inference problems. Many aspects of this method can already be explained at the level of the simple Curie-Weiss spin system. This provides a new method of solution for this model which does not appear to be known. We then generalize this analysis to a paradigmatic inference problem, namely rank-one matrix estimation, also refered to as the Wigner spike model in statistics. We give many pointers to the recent liter…
A version of the continuum Widom-Rowlinson model is introduced and studied. It is a two-component gas of point particles placed in $\mathbf{R}^d$ in which like particles do not interact and unlike particles contained in a given vessel of volume $V$ repel each other with intensity $a/V$. This model is thermodynamically equivalent to a one-component gas with multi-particle interaction. For both models, a rigorous theory of a phase transition is presented and the ways of its construction in the framework of the grand canonical formalism are outlined.
We consider the Curie-Weiss model at a given initial temperature in vanishing external field evolving under a Glauber spin-flip dynamics corresponding to a possibly different temperature. We study the limiting conditional probabilities and their continuity properties and discuss their set of points of discontinuity (bad points). We provide a complete analysis of the transition between Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian behavior as a function of time, extending earlier work for the case of independent spin-flip dynamics. For initial temperature bigger than one we prove that the time-evolved measure stay…
We study ensembles of random symmetric matrices whose entries exhibit certain correlations. Examples are distributions of Curie-Weiss-type. We provide a criterion on the correlations ensuring the validity of Wigner's semicircle law for the eigenvalue distribution measure. In case of Curie-Weiss distributions this criterion applies above the critical temperature (i.e. $β<1$). We also investigate the largest eigenvalue of certain ensembles of Curie-Weiss type and find a transition in its behavior at the critical temperature.
Consider the nearest-neighbor Ising model on $Λ_n:=[-n,n]^d\cap\mathbb{Z}^d$ at inverse temperature $β\geq 0$ with free boundary conditions, and let $Y_n(σ):=\sum_{u\inΛ_n}σ_u$ be its total magnetization. Let $X_n$ be the total magnetization perturbed by a critical Curie-Weiss interaction, i.e., \begin{equation*} \frac{d F_{X_n}}{d F_{Y_n}}(x):=\frac{\exp[x^2/\left(2\langle Y_n^2 \rangle_{Λ_n,β}\right)]}{\left\langle\exp[Y_n^2/\left(2\langle Y_n^2\rangle_{Λ_n,β}\right)]\right\rangle_{Λ_n,β}}, \end{equation*} where $F_{X_n}$ and $F_{Y_n}$ are the distribution functions for $X_n$ and $Y_n$ respe…
In this paper we consider the problem of parameter estimation in the $p$-spin Curie-Weiss model, for $p \geq 3$. We provide a complete description of the limiting properties of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimates of the inverse temperature and the magnetic field given a single realization from the $p$-spin Curie-Weiss model, complementing the well-known results in the 2-spin case (Comets and Gidas (1991)). Our results unearth various new phase transitions and surprising limit theorems, such as the existence of a 'critical' curve in the parameter space, where the limiting distribution of the …
Among the Markov chains breaking detailed-balance that have been proposed in the field of Monte-Carlo sampling in order to accelerate the convergence towards the steady state with respect to the detailed-balance dynamics, the idea of 'Lifting' consists in duplicating the configuration space into two copies $σ=\pm$ and in imposing directed flows in each copy in order to explore the configuration space more efficiently. The skew-detailed-balance Lifted-Markov-chain introduced by K. S. Turitsyn, M. Chertkov and M. Vucelja [Physica D Nonlinear Phenomena 240 , 410 (2011)] is revisited for the Curie…
We perform a detailed study of Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions for the Curie-Weiss model subject to independent spin-flip dynamics ("infinite-temperature" dynamics). We show that, in this setup, the program outlined in van Enter, Fernández, den Hollander and Redig can be fully completed, namely that Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions are equivalent to bifurcations in the set of global minima of the large-deviation rate function for the trajectories of the magnetization conditioned on their endpoint. As a consequence, we show that the time-evolved model is non-Gibbs if and only if this set is not a single…
In this paper, we derive the large deviations principle for the Potts model on the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ as $n$ increases to infinity. Next, for the Potts model on $K_{n,n}$, we provide an extension of the method of aggregate path coupling that was originally developed in Kovchegov et al 2011 for the mean-field Blume-Capel model and in Kovchegov and Otto 2015 for a general mean-field setting that included the Generalized Curie-Weiss-Potts model analyzed in Cuff et al 2012. We use the aggregate path coupling method to identify and prove the interface value $β_s$ separating the rapi…
A hamiltonian model is solved, which satisfies all requirements for a realistic ideal quantum measurement. The system S is a spin-$\half$, whose $z$-component is measured through coupling with an apparatus A=M+B, consisting of a magnet $\RM$ formed by a set of $N\gg 1$ spins with quartic infinite-range Ising interactions, and a phonon bath $\RB$ at temperature $T$. Initially A is in a metastable paramagnetic phase. The process involves several time-scales. Without being much affected, A first acts on S, whose state collapses in a very brief time. The mechanism differs from the usual decoherenc…
Increasing tensor powers of the $k\times k$ matrices $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$ are known to give rise to a continuous bundle of $C^*$-algebras over $I=\{0\}\cup 1/\mathbb{N}\subset[0,1]$ with fibers $A_{1/N}=M_k({\mathbb{C}})^{\otimes N}$ and $A_0=C(X_k)$, where $X_k=S(M_k({\mathbb{C}}))$, the state space of $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$, which is canonically a compact Poisson manifold (with stratified boundary). Our first result is the existence of a strict deformation quantization of $X_k$ à la Rieffel, defined by perfectly natural quantization maps $Q_{1/N}: \tilde{A}_0\rightarrow A_{1/N}$ (where $\tilde{A…
We investigate the effect of disorder on the Curie-Weiss model with Glauber dynamics. In particular, we study metastability for spin-flip dynamics on the Erdős-Rényi random graph $ER_n(p)$ with $n$ vertices and with edge retention probability $p \in (0,1)$. Each vertex carries an Ising spin that can take the values $-1$ or $+1$. Single spins interact with an external magnetic field $h \in (0,\infty)$, while pairs of spins at vertices connected by an edge interact with each other with ferromagnetic interaction strength $1/n$. Spins flip according to a Metropolis dynamics at inverse temperature …
We study Glauber dynamics for the mean-field (Curie-Weiss) Potts model with $q\geq 3$ states and show that it undergoes a critical slowdown at an inverse-temperature $β_s(q)$ strictly lower than the critical $β_c(q)$ for uniqueness of the thermodynamic limit. The dynamical critical $β_s(q)$ is the spinodal point marking the onset of metastability. We prove that when $β<β_s(q)$ the mixing time is asymptotically $C(β, q) n \log n$ and the dynamics exhibits the cutoff phenomena, a sharp transition in mixing, with a window of order $n$. At $β=β_s(q)$ the dynamics no longer exhibits cutoff and its …
We study the $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on the $n$-vertex complete graph known as the mean-field (Curie-Weiss) model. We analyze the Swendsen-Wang algorithm which is a Markov chain that utilizes the random cluster representation for the ferromagnetic Potts model to recolor large sets of vertices in one step and potentially overcomes obstacles that inhibit single-site Glauber dynamics. Long et al. studied the case $q=2$, the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the mean-field ferromagnetic Ising model, and showed that the mixing time satisfies: (i) $Θ(1)$ for $β<β_c$, (ii) $Θ(n^{1/4})$ for $β=β…
Recent works unraveled an intriguing finite-time dynamical phase transition in the thermal relaxation of the mean field Curie-Weiss model. The phase transition reflects a sudden switch in the dynamics. Its existence in systems with a finite range of interaction, however, remained unclear. Here we demonstrate the dynamical phase transition for nearest-neighbor Ising systems on the square and Bethe lattices through extensive computer simulations and by analytical results. Combining large-deviation techniques and Bethe-Guggenheim theory we prove the existence of the dynamical phase transition for…
