Given a complete real-valued field $k$ of residue characteristic zero, we study properties of a differential form $ω$ on a smooth proper $k$-analytic curve $X$. In particular, we associate to $(X,ω)$ a natural tropical reduction datum combining tropical data of $(X,ω)$ and algebra-geometric reduction data over the residue field $\widetilde{k}$. We show that this datum satisfies natural compatibility condition, and prove a lifting theorem asserting that any compatible tropical reduction datum lifts to an actual pair $(X,ω)$. In particular, we obtain a short proof of the main result of a work [BCGGM20] by Bainbridge, Chen, Gendron, Grushevsky, and Möller.
Given a complete real-valued field $k$ of residue characteristic zero, we study properties of a meromorphic $q$-differential form $ξ$ (a section of $Ω_X^{\otimes q}$) on a smooth proper $k$-analytic curve $X$. In particular, we associate to $(X,ξ)$ a natural tropical reduction datum combining tropical-geometric data over the value group of $|k^\times|$ and algebro-geometric reduction data over the residue field $\widetilde{k}$. We show that this datum satisfies natural compatibility conditions, and prove a lifting theorem asserting that any compatible tropical reduction datum lifts to an actua…
This work continues the study of residually wild morphisms $f\colon Y\to X$ of Berkovich curves initiated by Cohen, Temkin and Trushin in [CTT16]. The different function $δ_f$ introduced in [CTT16] is the primary discrete invariant of such covers. When $f$ is not residually tame, it provides a non-trivial enhancement of the classical invariant of $f$ consisting of morphisms of reductions $\widetilde{f}\colon \widetilde{Y}\to\widetilde{X}$ and metric skeletons $Γ_f\colon Γ_Y\toΓ_X$. In this paper we interpret $δ_f$ as the norm of the canonical trace section $τ_f$ of the dualizing sheaf $ω_f$, a…
Let K be an algebraically closed, complete non-Archimedean field. The purpose of this paper is to carefully study the extent to which finite morphisms of algebraic K-curves are controlled by certain combinatorial objects, called skeleta. A skeleton is a metric graph embedded in the Berkovich analytification of X. A skeleton has the natural structure of a metrized complex of curves. We prove that a finite morphism of K-curves gives rise to a finite harmonic morphism of a suitable choice of skeleta. We use this to give analytic proofs of stronger "skeletonized" versions of some foundational resu…
Let $C$ be a curve over a complete discretely valued field $K$. We give tropical descriptions of the weight function attached to a pluricanonical form on $C$ and the essential skeleton of $C$. We show that the Laplacian of the weight function equals the pluricanonical divisor on Berkovich skeleta, and we describe the essential skeleton of $C$ as a combinatorial skeleton of the Berkovich skeleton of the minimal $snc$-model. In particular, if $C$ has semi-stable reduction, then the essential skeleton coincides with the minimal skeleton. As an intermediate step, we describe the base loci of logar…
Given a generically étale morphism $f\colon Y\to X$ of quasi-smooth Berkovich curves, we define a different function $δ_f\colon Y\to[0,1]$ that measures the wildness of the topological ramification locus of $f$. This provides a new invariant for studying $f$, which cannot be obtained by the usual reduction techniques. We prove that $δ_f$ is a piecewise monomial function satisfying a balancing condition at type 2 points analogous to the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula, and show that $δ_f$ can be used to explicitly construct the simultaneous skeletons of $X$ and $Y$. As an application, we use …
In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for computing p-adic integrals on bad reduction hyperelliptic curves. For bad reduction curves, there are two notions of p-adic integration: Berkovich-Coleman integrals which can be performed locally; and abelian integrals with desirable number-theoretic properties. By covering a bad reduction hyperelliptic curve by annuli and basic wide open sets, we reduce the computation of Berkovich-Coleman integrals to the known algorithms on good reduction hyperelliptic curves. These are due to Balakrishnan, Bradshaw, and Kedlaya, and to Balakrishnan and Besser fo…
Special covers are metacyclic covers of the projective line, with Galois group of order pm, which have a specific type of bad reduction to characteristic p. Such covers arise in the study of the arithmetic of Galois covers of the projective line with three branch points. Our results provide a classification of all special covers in terms of certain lifting data in characteristic p.
Let K be an algebraically closed field which is complete with respect to a nontrivial, non-Archimedean valuation and let Λbe its value group. Given a smooth, proper, connected K-curve X and a skeleton Γof the Berkovich analytification X^\an, there are two natural real tori which one can consider: the tropical Jacobian Jac(Γ) and the skeleton of the Berkovich analytification Jac(X)^\an. We show that the skeleton of the Jacobian is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of the skeleton as principally polarized tropical abelian varieties. In addition, we show that the tropicalization of a classic…
We apply the theory of the radius of convergence of a p-adic connection to the special case of the direct image of the constant connection via a finite morphism of compact p-adic curves, smooth in the sense of rigid geometry. In the case of an etale covering of curves with good reduction, we get a lower bound for that radius and obtain a new geometric proof of a variant of the p-adic Rolle theorem of Robert and Berkovich. We take this opportunity to clarify the relation between our notion of radius of convergencand the more intrinsic one used by Kedlaya
We construct liftings of reduction maps from CM points to supersingular points for general quaternion algebras and use these liftings to establish a precise correspondence between CM points on indefinite quaternion algebras with a given conductor and CM points on certain corresponding totally definite quaternion algebras.
A proof based on reduction to finite fields of Esnault-Viehweg's stronger version of Sommese Vanishing Theorem for $k$-ample line bundles is given. This result is used to give different proofs of isotriviality results of A. Parshin and L. Migliorini.
Proves that if a curve has totally split reduction and the corresponding skeleton (as a metric graph) is a chain of loops with generic edge lengths, then every divisor on the graph with imposed ramification at the rightmost vertex $p$ of the skeleton lifts to a divisor class on the curve with the same ramification at some point $P$ that retracts to $p$, extending the work of Cartwright-Jensen-Payne. Gives a positive answer to lifting proper tropical intersections within a polytopal domain in an analytic torus.
A key tool in the study of algebraic surfaces and their moduli is Brieskorn's simultaneous resolution for families of algebraic surfaces with simple (du Val or ADE) singularities. In this paper we show that a similar statement holds for families of curves with at worst simple (ADE) singularities. For a family $\mathscr X\to B$ of ADE curves, we give an explicit and natural resolution of the rational map $B\to \bar M_g$. Moreover, we discuss a lifting of this map to the moduli stack $ \bar {\mathcal M}_g$, i.e. a simultaneous semi-stable reduction for the family $\mathscr X/B$. In particular, w…
We prove existence and nonexistence results for certain differential forms in positive characteristic, called {\em good deformation data}. Some of these results are obtained by reduction modulo $p$ of Belyi maps. As an application, we solve the local lifting problem for groups with Sylow $p$-subgroup of order $p$.
In this paper we generalize correspondence theorems of Mikhalkin and Nishinou-Siebert providing a correspondence between algebraic and parameterized tropical curves. We also give a description of a canonical tropicalization procedure for algebraic curves motivated by Berkovich's construction of skeletons of analytic curves. Under certain assumptions, we construct a one-to-one correspondence between algebraic curves satisfying toric constraints and certain combinatorially defined objects, called "stacky tropical reductions", that can be enumerated in terms of tropical curves satisfying linear c…
For a K3 surface of finite height over a field of odd characteristic, there exists a smooth lifting to the ring of Witt vectors such that the reduction map from the Picard group of the generic fiber to the Picard group of the special fiber is isomorphic. In this paper, using this result, we give a criterion for a K3 surface of finite height over a field of odd characteristic to be an Enriques K3 surface or to be a K3 surface in terms of the Neron-Severi lattice. Then we show every Kummer surface has an Enriques involution. We also give a classification of K3 surfaces of Picard rank of 20 over …
We prove equidistribution of Weierstrass points on Berkovich curves. Let $X$ be a smooth proper curve of positive genus over a complete algebraically closed non-Archimedean field $K$ of equal characteristic zero with a non-trivial valuation. Let $L$ be a line bundle of positive degree on $X$. The Weierstrass points of powers of $L$ are equidistributed according to the Zhang-Arakelov measure on the analytification $X^{an}$. This provides a non-Archimedean analogue of a theorem of Mumford and Neeman. Along the way we provide a description of the reduction of Weierstrass points, answering a quest…

This paper originated as an appendix to the paper "Topology and Geometry of the Berkovich Ramification Locus for Rational Functions, II" by Xander Faber arXiv:1104.0943v2 [math.NT]. It may however be read independently. We prove a variant of Alain Robert's p-adic Rolle theorem, via the theory of the radius of convergence of p-adic connections and the theory of semistable reduction of p-adic curves. We carefully compare the present author's notion [Inv. Math. 182 (2010)] of radius of convergence, of a connection on a p-adic curve X, normalized by the choice of a semistable model of X, with Kedl…
