We investigate the role of ligand states in the electronic properties of CaFe2As2 using high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) at different sample temperatures. Experimental results indicate that the binding energy of Ca is close to that for 2+ charge state of Ca atoms and the other constituent elements, Fe and As possess electronic configuration close to that in elemental systems. No difference is observed in the As 3p core level spectra with the change of emission angle and/or the change in sample temperature. This is surprising as the Ca atoms at the cleaved sample surface reorganizes itself to form linear structures which is expected to influence Ca-As hybridization leading to significant difference in surface and bulk electronic structures. Moreover, CaFe2As2 undergoes structural and magnetic phase transition at 170 K, and strong Fe-As hybridization provides pathways for electron dynamics. Clearly, further studies are required to resolve these puzzling observations.
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on BaFe2As2, a parent compound of the FeAs-based superconductors. In the magnetic ordering state, there is no gap opening observed on the Fermi surface. Instead, dramatic band structure reorganization occurs across the magnetic transition. The appearance of the singular Fermi spots near (pi,pi) is the most prominent signature of magnetic ordering. These observations provide direct evidence that the magnetic ordering state of BaFe2As2 is distinct from the conventional spin-density-wave state. They reflect the electr…
We report the first comprehensive high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeFeAsO, a parent compound of FeAs-based high temperature superconductors with a mangetic/structural transition at $\sim$150 K. In the magnetic ordering state, four hole-like Fermi surface sheets are observed near $Γ$(0,0) and the Fermi surface near M(+/-$π$,+/-$π$) shows a tiny electron-like pocket at M surrounded by four Dirac cone-like strong spots. The unusual Fermi surface topology deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. The electronic signature of the magnetic/structural transit…
We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the band structure of BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2, two of the parent compounds of the iron arsenic high temperature superconductors. We find clear evidence for band back folding and hybridization demonstrating that conduction electrons are strongly affected by the emergence of magnetic order. Our high quality data revealed that although the Fermi surface is strongly three-dimensional, it does indeed have long parallel segments along the kz direction that can lead to the emergence of magnetic order. More interestingly, we find very unu…
The Nernst effect has recently proven as a sensitive probe for detecting unusual normal state properties of unconventional superconductors. Here we present a systematic study of the Nernst effect of the iron pnictide superconductor \laf with a particular focus on its evolution upon doping. For the parent compound we observe a huge negative Nernst coefficient accompanied with a severe violation of the Sondheimer cancellation in the spin density wave (SDW) ordered state. Surprisingly, an unusual and enhanced Nernst signal is also found at underdoping ($x=0.05$) despite the presence of bulk super…
Mn-based superconductor is rare and recently reported in quasi-one-dimensional KMn$_6$Bi$_5$ with [Mn$_6$Bi$_5$]-columns under high pressure. Here we report the synthesis, magnetic properties, electrical resistivity, and specific heat capacity of the newly-discovered quasi-one-dimensional NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ single crystal. Compared with other AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs), NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ has larger intra-column Bi-Bi bond length, which may result in the two decoupled antiferromagnetic transitions at 47.3 K and 52.3 K. The relatively lower antiferromagnetic transition temperatures make NaMn$_6$…
The parent compound of an unconventional superconductor must contain unusual correlated electronic and magnetic properties of its own. In the high-Tc potassium intercalated FeSe, there has been significant debate regarding what the exact parent compound is. Our studies unambiguously show that the Fe-vacancy ordered K2Fe4Se5 is the magnetic, Mott insulating parent compound of the superconducting state. Non-superconducting K2Fe4Se5 becomes a superconductor after high temperature annealing, and the overall picture indicates that superconductivity in K2-xFe4+ySe5 originates from the Fe-vacancy ord…
We have synthesized two new Eu-based compounds, EuSr2Bi2S4F4 and Eu2SrBi2S4F4 which are derivatives of Eu3Bi2S4F4, an intrinsic superconductor with Tc = 1.5 K. They belong to a tetragonal structure (SG: I4/mmm, Z = 2), similar to the parent compound Eu3Bi2S4F4. Our structural and 151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy studies show that in EuSr2Bi2S4F4, Eu-atoms exclusively occupy the crystallographic 2a-sites. In Eu2SrBi2S4F4, 2a-sites are fully occupied by Eu-atoms and the other half of Eu-atoms and Sr-atoms together fully occupy 4e-sites in a statistical distribution. In both compounds Eu atoms occupy…
We report a state-of-the-art photoemission (ARPES) study of high quality single crystals of the NaxCoO2 series focusing on the fine details of the low-energy states. The Fermi velocity is found to be small (< 0.5 eV.A) and only weakly anisotropic over the Fermi surface at all dopings setting the size of the pair wavefunction to be on the order of 10-20 nanometers. In the low doping regime the exchange inter-layer splitting vanishes and two dimensional collective instabilities such as 120-type fluctuations become kinematically allowed. Our results suggest that the unusually small Fermi velocity…
Recent superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) over 100 K for monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 have renewed interest in the bulk parent compound. In KCl:AlCl3 flux-transport-grown crystals of FeSe0.94Be0.06, FeSe0.97Be0.03 and, for comparison, FeSe, this work reports doping of FeSe using Be, among the smallest of possible dopants, corresponding to an effective chemical pressure. According to lattice parameter measurements, 6% Be doping shrank the tetragonal FeSe lattice equivalent to a physical pressure of 0.75 GPa. Using this flux-transport method of sample preparation, 6% of Be was the maximum …
We report the first photoemission study of Fe$_{1+x}$Te - the host compound of the newly discovered iron-chalcogenide superconductors (maximum T$_c$ $\sim$ 27K). Our results reveal a pair of nearly electron-hole compensated Fermi pockets, strong Fermi velocity renormalization and an absence of a spin-density-wave gap. A shadow hole pocket is observed at the X-point of the Brillouin zone which is consistent with a long-range ordered magneto-structural groundstate. No signature of Fermi surface nesting instability associated with Q=($π$/2, $π$/2) is observed. Our results collectively reveal that…
We report the observation of an unusual $B$ dependence of transverse magnetoresistance (MR) in the PrFeAsO, one of the parent compound of pnictide superconductors. Below the spin density wave transition, MR is large, positive and increases with decreasing temperature. At low temperatures, MR increases linearly with $B$ up to 14 T. For $T$$\geq$40 K, MR vs $B$ curve develops a weak curvature in the low-field region which indicates a crossover from $B$ linear to $B^2$ dependence as $B$$\rightarrow$0. The $B$ linear MR originates from the Dirac cone states and has been explained by the quantum me…
The unusual temperature dependence of the resistivity and its in-plane anisotropy observed in the Fe-based superconducting materials, particularly Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, has been a longstanding puzzle. Here we consider the effect of impurity scattering on the temperature dependence of the average resistivity within a simple two-band model of a dirty spin density wave metal. The sharp drop in resistivity below the Néel temperature $T_N$ in the parent compound can only be understood in terms of a Lifshitz transition following Fermi surface reconstruction upon magnetic ordering. We show …
Electronic structure calculations are used to analyze the electronic and magnetic properties in {K$_{2}$Fe$_{4+x}$Se$_{5}$}. Fe atoms can be divided into two distinct groups. The $x{=}0$ (parent) compound forms an insulating, collinear, local moment phase with high N{é}el temperature. We show that large biquadratic exchange coupling and exchange-elastic interactions stabilize the magnetic order. For $x{>}0$ the additional Fe atoms fill vacancy sites. They form impurity bands for small $x$, which broaden as $x$ increases. They determine the states at the Fermi level and may be viewed as a magne…
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the electronic structure of CaFe$_2$As$_2$ in previously unexplored collapsed tetragonal (CT) phase. This unusual phase of the iron arsenic high temperature superconductors was hard to measure as it exists only under pressure. By inducing internal strain, via the post growth, thermal treatment of the single crystals, we were able to stabilize the CT phase at ambient-pressure. We find significant differences in the Fermi surface topology and band dispersion data from the more commo…
We present the first comprehensive derivation of the intrinsic electronic phase diagram of the iron-oxypnictide superconductors in the normal state based on the analysis of the electrical resistivity $ρ$ of both LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ for a wide range of doping. Our data give clear-cut evidence for unusual normal state properties in these new materials. In particular, the emergence of superconductivity at low doping levels is accompanied by distinct anomalous transport behavior in $ρ$ of the normal state which is reminiscent of the spin density wave (SDW) signature in th…
We investigated the out-of-plane transport properties of parent and chemically substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ for various types of substitution. Based on the studies of Hall coefficient and chemical-substitution effect, we have clarified the origin for the unusual temperature dependence of out-of-plane resistivity $ρ_c(T)$ in the high-temperature paramagnetic-tetragonal phase. Electron (hole) carriers have an incoherent (coherent) character, which is responsible for non-metallic (metallic) $ρ_c(T)$. Although both of electron and hole contributions are almost comparable, a slightly larger contr…
The parent compound of the copper-oxide high temperature superconductors is a Mott insulator. Superconductivity is realized by doping an appropriate amount of charge carriers. How a Mott insulator transforms into a superconductor is crucial in understanding the unusual physical properties of high temperature superconductors and the superconductivity mechanism. Here we report high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurement on heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d system. The electronic structure of the lightly-doped samples exhibit a number of characteristics: existence of an energy gap…
In the copper-oxide parent compounds of the high-transition-temperature superconductors, the valence electrons are localized, one per copper site, due to strong intraatomic Coulomb repulsion. A symptom of the localization is antiferromagnetism, where the spins of localized electrons alternate between up and down. The superconductivity appears when mobile 'holes' are doped into this insulating state, and it coexists with antiferromagnetic fluctuations. In one approach to the coexistence, the holes are believed to self-organize into 'stripes' that alternate with antiferromagnetic (insulating) re…
