We study the mathematical structure of the notion of measurement space, which extends aspects of noncommutative topology that are based on quantale theory. This yields a geometric model of physical measurements that provides a realist picture, yet also operational, such that measurements and classical information arise interdependently as primitive concepts. A derived notion of classical observer caters for a mathematical formulation of Bohr's classical/quantum divide. Two important classes of measurement spaces are obtained, respectively from C*-algebras and from second-countable locally compact open sober topological groupoids. The latter yield measurements of classical type and relate to Schwinger's notion of selective measurement. We show that the measurement space associated to the reduced C*-algebra of any second-countable locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid is canonically equipped with a classical observer, and we establish a correspondence between properties of the observer and properties of the groupoid.
Analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations in the frames of the algebraic approach to systems of partial differential equations (formal theory of differential equations) is presented.
This paper is concerned with constructive and structural aspects of euclidean field theory. We present a C*-algebraic approach to lattice field theory. Concepts like block spin transformations, action, effective action, and continuum limits are generalized and reformulated within the C*-algebraic setup. Our approach allows to relate to each family of lattice models a set of continuum limits which satisfies reflexion positivity and translation invariance which suggests a guideline for constructing euclidean field theory models. The main purpose of the present paper is to combine the concepts of…
Algebraic approach to quantum non - separability is applied to the case of two qubits. It is based on the partition of the algebra of observables into independent subalgebras and the tensor product structure of the Hilbert space is not exploited. Even in this simple case, such general formulation has some advantages. Using algebraic formalism we can explicitly show the relativity of the notion of entanglement to the observables measured in the system and characterize separable and non - separable pure states. As a universal measure of non - separability of pure states we propose to take so cal…
We describe the freedom of choosing a square root in massive gravity from algebraic point of view. This contribution is based on the talk given by one of us (AG) at the Geometric Foundations of Gravity conference in Tartu in August 2017.
The paper presents mathematical models of quasicrystals with particular attention given to cut-and-project sets. We summarize the properties of higher-dimensional quasicrystal models and then focus on the one-dimensional ones. For the description of their properties we use the methods of combinatorics on words.
To appear in Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, published by Elsevier in early 2006. Comments/corrections welcome. The article surveys topological aspects in gauge theories.
We present a description of two dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theory on the plane and on compact surfaces, examining the topological, geometric and probabilistic aspects.
We discuss some fundamental properties of the XXZ spin chain, which are important in the algebraic Bethe-ansatz derivation for the multiple-integral representations of the spin-s XXZ correlation function with an arbitrary product of elementary matrices. For instance, we construct Hermitian conjugate vectors in the massless regime and introduce the spin-s Hermitian elementary matrices.
This paper describes a framework in which techniques from arithmetic algebraic geometry are used to formulate a direct and intrinsic link between the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and aspects of the underlying conformal field theory. As an application the algebraic number field determined by the fusion rules of the conformal field theory is derived from the number theoretic structure of the cohomological Hasse-Weil L-function determined by Artin's congruent zeta function of the algebraic variety. In this context a natural number theoretic characterization arises for the quantum dimensions i…
An algebraic characterization of vacuum states in Minkowski space is given which relies on recently proposed conditions of geometric modular action and modular stability for algebras of observables associated with wedge-shaped regions. In contrast to previous work, continuity properties of these algebras are not assumed but derived from their inclusion structure. Moreover, a unique continuous unitary representation of spacetime translations is constructed from these data. Thus the dynamics of relativistic quantum systems in Minkowski space is encoded in the observables and state and requires n…
In the last decade, the development of new ideas in quantum theory, including geometric and deformation quantization, the non-Abelian Berry factor, super- and BRST symmetries, non-commutativity, has called into play the geometric techniques based on the deep interplay between algebra, differential geometry and topology. The present book aims at being a guide to advanced differential geometric and topological methods in quantum mechanics. Their main peculiarity lies in the fact that geometry in quantum theory speaks mainly the algebraic language of rings, modules, sheaves and categories. Geomet…
A generalized version of the TKNN-equations computing Hall conductances for generalized Dirac-like Harper operators is derived. Geometrically these equations relate Chern numbers of suitable (dual) bundles naturally associated to spectral projections of the operators.
Using the shuffle structure of the graphs, we introduce a new kind of the Hopf algebraic structure for tagged graphs with, or without loops. Like a quantum group structure, its product is non-commutative. With the help of the Hopf algebraic structure, after taking account symmetry of the tagged graphs, we reconstruct the topological recursion on spectral curves proposed by B. Eynard and N. Orantin, which includes the one-loop equations of various matrix integrals as special cases.
In this paper, a supersymmetric extension of the minimal surface equation is formulated. Based on this formulation, a Lie superalgebra of infinitesimal symmetries of this equation is determined. A classification of the one-dimensional subalgebras is performed, which results in a list of 143 conjugacy classes with respect to action by the supergroup generated by the Lie superalgebra. The symmetry reduction method is used to obtain invariant solutions of the supersymmetric minimal surface equation. The classical minimal surface equation is also examined and its group-theoretical properties are c…
In this article, we define a non-commutative deformation of the "symplectic invariants" of an algebraic hyperelliptical plane curve. The necessary condition for our definition to make sense is a Bethe ansatz. The commutative limit reduces to the symplectic invariants, i.e. algebraic geometry, and thus we define non-commutative deformations of some algebraic geometry quantities. In particular our non-commutative Bergmann kernel satisfies a Rauch variational formula. Those non-commutative invariants are inspired from the large N expansion of formal non-hermitian matrix models. Thus they are expe…
We present an exactly solvable lattice Hamiltonian to realize gapped boundaries of Kitaev's quantum double models for Dijkgraaf-Witten theories. We classify the elementary excitations on the boundary, and systematically describe the bulk-to-boundary condensation procedure. We also present the parallel algebraic/categorical structure of gapped boundaries.
The notion of a topological phase of an insulator is based on the concept of homotopy between Hamiltonians. It therefore depends on the choice of a topological space to which the Hamiltonians belong. We advocate that this space should be the $C^*$-algebra of observables. We relate the symmetries of insulators to graded real structures on the observable algebra and classify the topological phases using van Daele's formulation of $K$-theory. This is related but not identical to Thiang's recent approach to classify topological phases by $K$-groups in Karoubi's formulation.
In this article, we solve the loop equations of the β-random matrix model, in a way similar to what was found for the case of hermitian matrices β=1. For β=1, the solution was expressed in terms of algebraic geometry properties of an algebraic spectral curve of equation y^2=U(x). For arbitrary β, the spectral curve is no longer algebraic, it is a Schroedinger equation ((\hbar\partial)^2-U(x)).ψ(x)=0 where \hbar\propto (\sqrtβ-1/\sqrtβ). In this article, we find a solution of loop equations, which takes the same form as the topological recursion found for β=1. This allows to define natural gene…
In this thesis, we study aspects of entanglement theory of quantum field theories from an algebraic point of view. The main motivation is to gain insights about the general structure of the entanglement in QFT, towards a definition of an entropic version of QFT. In the opposite direction, we are also interested in exploring any consequence of the entanglement in algebraic QFT. This may help us to reveal unknown features of QFT, with the final aim of finding a dynamical principle which allows us to construct non-trivial and rigorous models of QFT. The algebraic approach is the natural framework…
It is well-known that classical two-dimensional topological field theories are in one-to-one correspondence with commutative Frobenius algebras. An important extension of classical two-dimensional topological field theories is provided by open-closed two-dimensional topological field theories. In this paper we extend open-closed two-dimensional topological field theories to nonorientable surfaces. We call them Klein topological field theories(KTFT). We prove that KTFTs bijectively correspond to algebras with certain additional structures, called structure algebras. Semisimple structure algebra…
In this paper, we discuss the properties of the generating functions of spin Hurwitz numbers. In particular, for spin Hurwitz numbers with arbitrary ramification profiles, we construct the weighed sums which are given by Orlov's hypergeometric solutions of the 2-component BKP hierarchy. We derive the closed algebraic formulas for the correlation functions associated with these tau-functions, and under reasonable analytical assumptions we prove the loop equations (the blobbed topological recursion). Finally, we prove a version of topological recursion for the spin Hurwitz numbers with the spin …
We describe the algebraic ingredients of a proof of the conjecture of Frenkel and Ip that the category of positive representations $\mathcal{P}_λ$ of the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$ is closed under tensor products. Our results generalize those of Ponsot and Teschner in the rank 1 case of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. In higher rank, many nontrivial features appear, the most important of these being a surprising connection to the quantum integrability of the open Coxeter-Toda lattice. We show that the closure under tensor products follows from the orthogonality and completeness of the To…
Certain geometric properties of submanifolds of configuration space are numerically investigated for classical lattice phi^4 models in one and two dimensions. Peculiar behaviors of the computed geometric quantities are found only in the two-dimensional case, when a phase transition is present. The observed phenomenology strongly supports, though in an indirect way, a recently proposed topological conjecture about a topology change of the configuration space submanifolds as counterpart of a phase transition.
