Spoken language understanding has been addressed as a supervised learning problem, where a set of training data is available for each domain. However, annotating data for each domain is both financially costly and non-scalable so we should fully utilize information across all domains. One existing approach solves the problem by conducting multi-domain learning, using shared parameters for joint training across domains. We propose to improve the parameterization of this method by using domain-specific and task-specific model parameters to improve knowledge learning and transfer. Experiments on 5 domains show that our model is more effective for multi-domain SLU and obtain the best results. In addition, we show its transferability by outperforming the prior best model by 12.4\% when adapting to a new domain with little data.

To capture salient contextual information for spoken language understanding (SLU) of a dialogue, we propose time-aware models that automatically learn the latent time-decay function of the history without a manual time-decay function. We also propose a method to identify and label the current speaker to improve the SLU accuracy. In experiments on the benchmark dataset used in Dialog State Tracking Challenge 4, the proposed models achieved significantly higher F1 scores than the state-of-the-art contextual models. Finally, we analyze the effectiveness of the introduced models in detail. The ana…
Spoken language understanding (SLU) is an essential component in conversational systems. Most SLU component treats each utterance independently, and then the following components aggregate the multi-turn information in the separate phases. In order to avoid error propagation and effectively utilize contexts, prior work leveraged history for contextual SLU. However, the previous model only paid attention to the content in history utterances without considering their temporal information and speaker roles. In the dialogues, the most recent utterances should be more important than the least recen…
Spoken language understanding (SLU) is a key component of task-oriented dialogue systems. SLU parses natural language user utterances into semantic frames. Previous work has shown that incorporating context information significantly improves SLU performance for multi-turn dialogues. However, collecting a large-scale human-labeled multi-turn dialogue corpus for the target domains is complex and costly. To reduce dependency on the collection and annotation effort, we propose a Context Encoding Language Transformer (CELT) model facilitating exploiting various context information for SLU. We explo…

Despite the great success of spoken language understanding (SLU) in high-resource languages, it remains challenging in low-resource languages mainly due to the lack of labeled training data. The recent multilingual code-switching approach achieves better alignments of model representations across languages by constructing a mixed-language context in zero-shot cross-lingual SLU. However, current code-switching methods are limited to implicit alignment and disregard the inherent semantic structure in SLU, i.e., the hierarchical inclusion of utterances, slots, and words. In this paper, we propose…

Current researches on spoken language understanding (SLU) heavily are limited to a simple setting: the plain text-based SLU that takes the user utterance as input and generates its corresponding semantic frames (e.g., intent and slots). Unfortunately, such a simple setting may fail to work in complex real-world scenarios when an utterance is semantically ambiguous, which cannot be achieved by the text-based SLU models. In this paper, we first introduce a new and important task, Profile-based Spoken Language Understanding (ProSLU), which requires the model that not only relies on the plain text…
Employing pre-trained language models (LM) to extract contextualized word representations has achieved state-of-the-art performance on various NLP tasks. However, applying this technique to noisy transcripts generated by automatic speech recognizer (ASR) is concerned. Therefore, this paper focuses on making contextualized representations more ASR-robust. We propose a novel confusion-aware fine-tuning method to mitigate the impact of ASR errors to pre-trained LMs. Specifically, we fine-tune LMs to produce similar representations for acoustically confusable words that are obtained from word conf…
Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) is an essential part of the spoken dialogue system, which typically consists of intent detection (ID) and slot filling (SF) tasks. Recently, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) based methods achieved the state-of-the-art for SLU. It is noted that, in the existing RNN-based approaches, ID and SF tasks are often jointly modeled to utilize the correlation information between them. However, we noted that, so far, the efforts to obtain better performance by supporting bidirectional and explicit information exchange between ID and SF are not well studied. In addition,…

Spoken Language Translation (SLT) is becoming more widely used and becoming a communication tool that helps in crossing language barriers. One of the challenges of SLT is the translation from a language without gender agreement to a language with gender agreement such as English to Arabic. In this paper, we introduce an approach to tackle such limitation by enabling a Neural Machine Translation system to produce gender-aware translation. We show that NMT system can model the speaker/listener gender information to produce gender-aware translation. We propose a method to generate data used in ad…
The success of interactive dialog systems is usually associated with the quality of the spoken language understanding (SLU) task, which mainly identifies the corresponding dialog acts and slot values in each turn. By treating utterances in isolation, most SLU systems often overlook the semantic context in which a dialog act is expected. The act dependency between turns is non-trivial and yet critical to the identification of the correct semantic representations. Previous works with limited context awareness have exposed the inadequacy of dealing with complexity in multiproned user intents, whi…
Query rewriting (QR) systems are widely used to reduce the friction caused by errors in a spoken language understanding pipeline. However, the underlying supervised models require a large number of labeled pairs, and these pairs are hard and costly to be collected. Therefore, We propose an augmentation framework that learns patterns from existing training pairs and generates rewrite candidates from rewrite labels inversely to compensate for insufficient QR training data. The proposed framework casts the augmentation problem as a sequence-to-sequence generation task and enforces the optimizatio…

In a customer service system, dialogue summarization can boost service efficiency by automatically creating summaries for long spoken dialogues in which customers and agents try to address issues about specific topics. In this work, we focus on topic-oriented dialogue summarization, which generates highly abstractive summaries that preserve the main ideas from dialogues. In spoken dialogues, abundant dialogue noise and common semantics could obscure the underlying informative content, making the general topic modeling approaches difficult to apply. In addition, for customer service, role-speci…

Due to the lack of publicly available resources, conversation summarization has received far less attention than text summarization. As the purpose of conversations is to exchange information between at least two interlocutors, key information about a certain topic is often scattered and spanned across multiple utterances and turns from different speakers. This phenomenon is more pronounced during spoken conversations, where speech characteristics such as backchanneling and false-starts might interrupt the topical flow. Moreover, topic diffusion and (intra-utterance) topic drift are also more …
Spoken language understanding (SLU) is an essential component in conversational systems. Considering that contexts provide informative cues for better understanding, history can be leveraged for contextual SLU. However, most prior work only paid attention to the related content in history utterances and ignored the temporal information. In dialogues, it is intuitive that the most recent utterances are more important than the least recent ones, and time-aware attention should be in a decaying manner. Therefore, this paper allows the model to automatically learn a time-decay attention function w…
We present a novel approach to dialogue state tracking and referring expression resolution tasks. Successful contextual understanding of multi-turn spoken dialogues requires resolving referring expressions across turns and tracking the entities relevant to the conversation across turns. Tracking conversational state is particularly challenging in a multi-domain scenario when there exist multiple spoken language understanding (SLU) sub-systems, and each SLU sub-system operates on its domain-specific meaning representation. While previous approaches have addressed the disparate schema issue by l…

In the last few years, Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have proved effective on several NLP tasks. Despite such great success, their ability to model \emph{sequence labeling} is still limited. This lead research toward solutions where RNNs are combined with models which already proved effective in this domain, such as CRFs. In this work we propose a solution far simpler but very effective: an evolution of the simple Jordan RNN, where labels are re-injected as input into the network, and converted into embeddings, in the same way as words. We compare this RNN variant to all the other RNN model…
For many low-resource or endangered languages, spoken language resources are more likely to be annotated with translations than with transcriptions. Recent work exploits such annotations to produce speech-to-translation alignments, without access to any text transcriptions. We investigate whether providing such information can aid in producing better (mismatched) crowdsourced transcriptions, which in turn could be valuable for training speech recognition systems, and show that they can indeed be beneficial through a small-scale case study as a proof-of-concept. We also present a simple phoneti…
In this paper, we explore the benefits of incorporating context into a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN-T) based Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) model to improve the speech recognition for virtual assistants. Specifically, we use meta information extracted from the time at which the utterance is spoken and the approximate location information to make ASR context aware. We show that these contextual information, when used individually, improves overall performance by as much as 3.48% relative to the baseline and when the contexts are combined, the model learns complementary features and the rec…
Speech pre-training has primarily demonstrated efficacy on classification tasks, while its capability of generating novel speech, similar to how GPT-2 can generate coherent paragraphs, has barely been explored. Generative Spoken Language Modeling (GSLM) \cite{Lakhotia2021} is the only prior work addressing the generative aspects of speech pre-training, which replaces text with discovered phone-like units for language modeling and shows the ability to generate meaningful novel sentences. Unfortunately, despite eliminating the need of text, the units used in GSLM discard most of the prosodic inf…

Neural conversation systems generate responses based on the sequence-to-sequence (SEQ2SEQ) paradigm. Typically, the model is equipped with a single set of learned parameters to generate responses for given input contexts. When confronting diverse conversations, its adaptability is rather limited and the model is hence prone to generate generic responses. In this work, we propose an {\bf Ada}ptive {\bf N}eural {\bf D}ialogue generation model, \textsc{AdaND}, which manages various conversations with conversation-specific parameterization. For each conversation, the model generates parameters of …
We present a novel natural language generation system for spoken dialogue systems capable of entraining (adapting) to users' way of speaking, providing contextually appropriate responses. The generator is based on recurrent neural networks and the sequence-to-sequence approach. It is fully trainable from data which include preceding context along with responses to be generated. We show that the context-aware generator yields significant improvements over the baseline in both automatic metrics and a human pairwise preference test.

This work addresses the cross-corpora generalization issue for the low-resourced spoken language identification (LID) problem. We have conducted the experiments in the context of Indian LID and identified strikingly poor cross-corpora generalization due to corpora-dependent non-lingual biases. Our contribution to this work is twofold. First, we propose domain diversification, which diversifies the limited training data using different audio data augmentation methods. We then propose the concept of maximally diversity-aware cascaded augmentations and optimize the augmentation fold-factor for ef…

The acoustic and linguistic features are important cues for the spoken language identification (LID) task. Recent advanced LID systems mainly use acoustic features that lack the usage of explicit linguistic feature encoding. In this paper, we propose a novel transducer-based language embedding approach for LID tasks by integrating an RNN transducer model into a language embedding framework. Benefiting from the advantages of the RNN transducer's linguistic representation capability, the proposed method can exploit both phonetically-aware acoustic features and explicit linguistic features for LI…
