The energy band attraction (EBA) caused by the non-orthogonal eigenvectors is a unique phenomenon in the non-Hermitian (NH) system. However, restricted by the required tight-binding approximation and meticulously engineered complex potentials, such effect has not been experimentally demonstrated. Here, an experimentally verifiable model is proposed based on the photonic counterpart of the all-dielectric Mie-resonator lattice in a parallel-plate transmission line. Through theoretical derivation, we directly connect the transmission spectra with eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the NH Hamiltonians. By precisely tuning the resonance loss of the Mie-resonators, the evolution of the EBA effect in two-level NH systems, from gapped bands, gapless bands to flat bands, is directly observed for the first time. Furthermore, such effect can be extended to a graphene-like two-dimensional NH system. Our works show a metamaterial approach towards NH topological photonics and offer a deeper understanding of band theory in open systems.
The antiferromagnet is a closed Hermitian system, we find that its excitations, even in the absence of dissipation, can be viewed as a non-Hermitian system with dissipative coupling. Consequently, the antiferromagnetic resonance spectrum does not show the typical level repulsion, but shows the level attraction -- a characteristic behavior often observed in non-Hermitian systems. Such behavior is because the antiferromagnetic ground state is $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric. This new understanding on antiferromagnetic resonance also explains the mysterious enhancement of antiferromagnetic damping rate.…
Absence of level repulsion between extended states in random non-Hermitian systems is demonstrated. As a result, the general Wigner-Dyson distributions of level spacing of diffusive metals in the usual Hermitian systems is replaced by the Poisson distribution for quasiparticle level spacing of non-Hermitian disordered metals in the thermodynamic limit of infinite system size. This is a very surprising result because Poisson statistics is universally true for the Anderson insulators where energy eigenstates do not overlap with each other so that energy levels are independent from each other. For…
We study an anisotropic two-dimensional non-Hermitian Lieb lattice, where the staggered gain and loss present in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The intra-cell nonreciprocal coupling generates magnetic flux enclosed in the unit cell of the Lieb lattice and creates nontrivial topology. The active and dissipative topological edge states are along the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The two-dimensional non-Hermitian Lieb lattice also supports passive topological corner state. At appropriate magnetic flux, the non-Hermiticity can alter the corner state from …
The usual concepts of topological physics, such as the Berry curvature, cannot be applied directly to non-Hermitian systems. We show that another object, the quantum metric, which often plays a secondary role in Hermitian systems, becomes a crucial quantity near exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems, where it diverges in a way that fully controls the description of wavepacket trajectories. The quantum metric behaviour is responsible for a constant acceleration with a fixed direction, and for a non-vanishing constant velocity with a controllable direction. Both contributions are independe…
Absolute negative mobility (ANM) in nonequilibrium systems depicts the possibility of particles propagating toward the opposite direction of an external force. We uncover in this work a phenomenon analogous to ANM regarding eigenstate localization and particle transport in non-Hermitian systems under the influence of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). A coherent coupling between two non-Hermitian chains individually possessing the same preferred direction of NHSE is shown to cause a direction reversal of NHSE for all eigenmodes. This concept is further investigated in terms of time evolutio…
The non-trivial topological features in the energy band of non-Hermitian systems provide promising pathways to achieve robust physical behaviors in classical or quantum open systems. A key topological feature, unique to non-Hermitian systems, is the non-trivial winding of the energy band in the complex energy plane. Here we provide direct experimental demonstrations of such non-trivial winding, by implementing non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians along a frequency synthetic dimension formed in a ring resonator undergoing simultaneous phase and amplitude modulations, and by directly characterizin…
We propose a one-dimensional Floquet ladder that possesses two distinct topological transport channels with opposite directionality. The transport channels occur due to a $\mathbb Z_2$ non-Hermitian Floquet topological phase that is protected by time-reversal symmetry. The signatures of this phase are two pairs of Kramers degenerate Floquet quasienergy bands that are separated by an imaginary gap. We discuss how the Floquet ladder can be implemented in a photonic waveguide lattice and show that the direction of transport in the resulting waveguide structure can be externally controlled by focu…
Green's functions are fundamental quantities that determine the linear responses of physical systems. The recent developments of non-Hermitian systems, therefore, call for Green's function formulas of non-Hermitian bands. This task is complicated by the high sensitivity of energy spectrums to boundary conditions, which invalidates the straightforward generalization of Hermitian formulas. Here, based on the non-Bloch band theory, we obtain simple Green's function formulas of general one-dimensional non-Hermitian bands. Furthermore, in the large-size limit, these formulas dramatically reduce to …
The conventional bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down in non-Hermitian systems. In this paper, we reestablish the bulk-boundary correspondence in one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems by applying the scattering theory, which is a systematical way in various symmetry classes. Based on the scattering theory, it is discovered that the topological invariant can be obtained by solving a generalized eigenproblem without calculating the generalized Brillouin zone. As a direct consequence, we unveil a new type of topological phase transition without typical bulk enengy gap closing and an unstable …
Based on a general transport theory for non-reciprocal non-Hermitian systems and a topological model that encompasses a wide range of previously studied models, we (i) provide conditions for effects such as reflectionless and transparent transport, lasing, and coherent perfect absorption, (ii) identify which effects are compatible and linked with each other, and (iii) determine by which levers they can be tuned independently. For instance, the directed amplification inherent in the non-Hermitian skin effect does not enter the spectral conditions for reflectionless transport, lasing, or coheren…
We investigate non-Hermitian elastic lattices characterized by non-local feedback control interactions. In one-dimensional lattices, we show that the proportional control interactions produce complex dispersion relations characterized by gain and loss in opposite propagation directions. Depending on the non-local nature of the control interactions, the resulting non-reciprocity occurs in multiple frequency bands characterized by opposite non-reciprocal behavior. The dispersion topology is also investigated with focus on winding numbers and non-Hermitian skin effect, which manifests itself thro…
The topology of non-Hermitian systems is drastically shaped by the non-Hermitian skin effect, which leads to the generalized bulk-boundary correspondence and non-Bloch band theory. The essential part in formulations of bulk-boundary correspondence is a general and computable definition of topological invariants. In this paper, we introduce a construction of non-Hermitian topological invariants based directly on real-space wavefunctions, which provides a general and straightforward approach for determining non-Hermitian topology. As an illustration, we apply this formulation to several represen…
In Hermitian topological systems, the bulk-boundary correspondence strictly constraints boundary transport to values determined by the topological properties of the bulk. We demonstrate that this constraint can be lifted in non-Hermitian Floquet insulators. Provided that the insulator supports an anomalous topological phase, non-Hermiticity allows us to modify the boundary states independently of the bulk, without sacrificing their topological nature. We explore the ensuing possibilities for a Floquet topological insulator with non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry, where the helical transport …
Topological features embedded in ancient braiding and knotting arts endow significant impacts on our daily life and even cutting-edge science. Recently, fast growing efforts are invested to the braiding topology of complex Bloch bands in non-Hermitian systems. This new classification of band topology goes far beyond those established in Hermitian counterparts. Here, we present the first acoustic realization of the topological non-Hermitian Bloch braids, based on a two-band model easily accessible for realizing any desired knot structure. The non-Hermitian bands are synthesized by a simple bina…
Non-Hermitian systems exhibiting topological properties are attracting growing interest. In this work, we propose an algorithm for solving the ground state of a non-Hermitian system in the matrix product state (MPS) formalism based on a companion Hermitian Hamiltonian. If the eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian system are known, the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian can be directly constructed and solved using Hermitian variational methods. When the eigenvalues are unknown, a gradient descent along with the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian yields both the ground state eigenenergy and the eigenstate.…
In this letter we study the Hall conductance for a non-Hermitian Chern insulator and quantitatively describe how the Hall conductance deviates from a quantized value. We show the effects of the non-Hermitian terms on the Hall conductance are two folds. On one hand, it broadens the density-of-state of each band, because of which there always exists a non-universal bulk contribution. On the other hand, it adds decay term to the edge state, because of which the topological contribution also deviates from the quantized Chern number. We provides a simple formula for the topological contribution for…
We perform a comparative study for the magnetization dynamics within linear response theory of one and two dimensional massive Dirac electrons, after switching on either a real (hermitian) or an imaginary (non-hermitian) magnetic field. While hermitian dc magnetic fields polarize the spins in the direction of the external magnetic field, non-hermitian magnetic fields induce only off diagonal response. An imaginary dc magnetic field perpendicular to the mass term induces finite magnetization in the third direction only according to the right hand rule. This can be understood by analyzing the no…
We demonstrate that crystal defects can act as a probe of intrinsic non-Hermitian topology. In particular, in point-gapped systems with periodic boundary conditions, a pair of dislocations may induce a non-Hermitian skin effect, where an extensive number of Hamiltonian eigenstates localize at only one of the two dislocations. An example of such a phase are two-dimensional systems exhibiting weak non-Hermitian topology, which are adiabatically related to a decoupled stack of Hatano-Nelson chains. Moreover, we show that strong two-dimensional point-gap topology may also result in a dislocation r…
Quantum chaos in hermitian systems concerns the sensitivity of long-time dynamical evolution to initial conditions. The skin effect discovered recently in non-hermitian systems reveals the sensitivity to the spatial boundary condition even deeply in bulk. In this letter, we show that these two seemingly different phenomena can be unified through space-time duality. The intuition is that the space-time duality maps unitary dynamics to non-unitary dynamics and exchanges the temporal direction and spatial direction. Therefore, the space-time duality can establish the connection between the sensit…
Green's function in non-Hermitian systems has recently been revealed to be capable of directional amplification in some cases. The exact formulas for end-to-end Green's functions are significantly important for studies of both non-Hermitian systems and their applications. In this work, based on the Widom's formula, we derive exact formulas for the end-to-end Green's functions of single-band systems which depend on the roots of a simple algebraic equation. These exact formulas allow direct and accurate comparisons between theoretical results and experimentally measured quantities. In addition, …
We introduce and investigate material junctions as a generic and tuneable electronic platform for the realization of exotic non-Hermitian (NH) topological states of matter, where the NH character is induced by the surface self-energy of a thermal reservoir. As a conceptually rich and immediately experimentally realizable example, we consider a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) coupled to a ferromagnetic lead. Remarkably, the symmetry protected TI is promoted in a dissipative fashion to a non-symmetry protected NH Weyl phase with no direct Hermitian counterpart and which exhibits rob…
The skin effect and topological edge states in non-Hermitian system have been well-studied, and the second-order skin effect and corner modes have also been proposed in non-Hermitian system recently. In this paper, we construct the nested tight-binding formalism to research the second-order corner modes analytically, which is a direct description of the generic non-Hermitian tight-binding model without other assumptions. Within this formalism, we obtain the exact solutions of second-order topological zero-energy corner modes for the non-Hermitian four-band model. We validate the nested tight-b…
We study the interplay of disorder and bandstructure topology in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl points. The spectrum of particles is given by the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix, which contains contributions from a Weyl Hamiltonian and complex self-energy due to electron elastic scattering on disorder. We find that the tilt-induced matrix structure of the self-energy gives rise to either a flat band or a nodal line segment at the interface of the electron and hole pockets in the bulk bandstructure of type-II Weyl semimetals depending on the Weyl cone incl…
We study theoretically a junction of a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric non-Hermitian superconductor (PTS) placed between two conventional superconductors. We show that due to non-Hermitian electron-electron interaction in the PTS region and the combination of symmetries, only discrete values of phases of the conventional superconductors yield solutions for Andreev bound states. Remarkably, in the case of $0$ and $π$, we obtain growing and decaying in time Andreev bound states. For $π/2$ and $3π/2$, there is a Majorana zero mode penetrating through the junction in only one direction forming a quasipar…
Within the expanding field of non-Hermitian physics, non-Hermitian pumping has emerged as a key phenomenon, epitomized through the skin effect via extensive boundary mode accumulation modifying the conventional Bloch picture. Beyond redefining bulk-boundary correspondences, we show that non-Hermitian pumping induces an unprecedented type of spectral topology: it admits a classification in terms of graph topology, which is distinct from conventional topological classifications of the eigenstate or energy Riemann surface. Each topological class is characterized by a conformally invariant configu…
We investigate the ground state and quantum dynamics of an interacting bosonic chain with the nonreciprocal hopping. In sharp contrast to its Hermitian counterpart, the ground state can support Mott insulators in systems with noninteger filling due to the competition between nonreciprocal hopping and the on-site interaction. For the quantum dynamics, conservation laws for non-Hermitian systems manifest a stark difference from their Hermitian counterpart. In particular, for any Hermitian operator that commutes with the Hamiltonian operator, its expectation value is guaranteed to be nonconserved…
