Green's function in non-Hermitian systems has recently been revealed to be capable of directional amplification in some cases. The exact formulas for end-to-end Green's functions are significantly important for studies of both non-Hermitian systems and their applications. In this work, based on the Widom's formula, we derive exact formulas for the end-to-end Green's functions of single-band systems which depend on the roots of a simple algebraic equation. These exact formulas allow direct and accurate comparisons between theoretical results and experimentally measured quantities. In addition, we verify the prior established integral formula in the bulk region to agree with the result in our framework. We also find that the speed at which the Green's functions in the bulk region approach the prior established integral formula is not slower than an exponential decay as the system size increases. The correspondence between the signal amplification and the non-Hermitian skin effect is confirmed.
Genuinely non-Hermitian topological phases can be realized in open systems with sufficiently strong gain and loss; in such phases, the Hamiltonian cannot be deformed into a gapped Hermitian Hamiltonian without energy bands touching each other. Comparing Green functions for periodic and open boundary conditions we find that, in general, there is no correspondence between topological invariants computed for periodic boundary conditions, and boundary eigenstates observed for open boundary conditions. Instead, we find that the non-Hermitian winding number in one dimension signals a topological pha…
A nonzero non-Hermitian winding number indicates that a gapped system is in a nontrivial topological class due to the non-Hermiticity of its Hamiltonian. While for Hermitian systems nontrivial topological quantum numbers are reflected by the existence of edge states, a nonzero non-Hermitian winding number impacts a system's bulk response. To establish this relation, we introduce the bulk Green function, which describes the response of a gapped system to an external perturbation on timescales where the induced excitations have not propagated to the boundary yet, and show that it will grow in sp…
The energy spectrum of bosonic excitations from a condensate is given by the spectrum of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian constructed from a bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian in general even though the system is essentially Hermitian. In other words, two types of non-Hermiticity can coexist: one from the bosonic BdG nature and the other from the open quantum nature. In this paper, we propose boundary-dependent dynamical instability. We first define the bosonic dissipative BdG Hamiltonian in terms of Green's function in Nambu space and discuss the correct particle-hole symmetry of the c…
Green's functions are fundamental quantities that determine the linear responses of physical systems. The recent developments of non-Hermitian systems, therefore, call for Green's function formulas of non-Hermitian bands. This task is complicated by the high sensitivity of energy spectrums to boundary conditions, which invalidates the straightforward generalization of Hermitian formulas. Here, based on the non-Bloch band theory, we obtain simple Green's function formulas of general one-dimensional non-Hermitian bands. Furthermore, in the large-size limit, these formulas dramatically reduce to …
Non-Hermitian skin effect, namely that the eigenvalues and eigenstates of a non-Hermitian tight-binding Hamiltonian have significant differences under open or periodic boundary conditions, is a remarkable phenomenon of non-Hermitian systems. Inspired by the presence of the non-Hermitian skin effect, we study the evolution of wave-packets in non-Hermitian systems, which can be determined using the single-particle Green's function. Surprisingly, we find that in the thermodynamical limit, the Green's function does not depend on boundary conditions, despite the presence of skin effect. We proffer …

We consider conditions for the existence of boundary modes in non-Hermitian systems with edges of arbitrary co-dimension. Through a universal formulation of formation criteria for boundary modes in terms of local Green functions, we outline a generic perspective on the appearance of such modes and generate corresponding dispersion relations. In the process, we explain the skin effect in both topological and non-topological systems, exhaustively generalizing bulk-boundary correspondence in the presence of non-Hermiticity. This is accomplished via a doubled Green's function, inspired by doubled …
We present an alternative approach to studying topology in open quantum systems, relying directly on Green's functions and avoiding the need to construct an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We define an energy-dependent Chern number based on the eigenstates of the inverse Green's function matrix of the system which contains, within the self-energy, all the information about the influence of the environment, interactions, gain or losses. We explicitly calculate this topological invariant for a system consisting of a single 2D Dirac cone and find that it is half-integer quantized when certai…
We numerically investigate the odd parity states of the green exciton series in cuprous oxide. Taking into account the coupling to the yellow series and especially to the yellow continuum, the green excitons are quasi-bound resonances with a finite lifetime which cannot be described with Hermitian operators. To calculate their positions and linewidths, we use the method of complex-coordinate rotation, leading to a non-Hermitian complex eigenvalue problem. We find that the behavior of the dominant P states is very well approximated by a modified Rydberg formula using a negative quantum defect. …
We relate topological properties of non-Hermitian systems and observables of quantum open systems by using the Keldysh path-integral method. We express Keldysh Green's functions in terms of effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians that contain all the relevant topological information. We arrive at a frequency dependent topological index that is linked to the response of the system to perturbations at a given frequency. We show how to detect a transition between different topological phases by measuring the response to local perturbations. Our formalism is exemplified in a 1D Hatano-Nelson model, h…
We demonstrate the occurrence of nodal non-Hermitian (NH) phases featuring exceptional degeneracies in chiral-symmetric disordered quantum wires, where NH physics naturally arises from the self-energy in a disorder-averaged Green's function description. Notably, we find that at least two nodal points in the clean Hermitian system are required for exceptional points to be effectively stabilized upon adding disorder. We identify and study experimental signatures of our theoretical findings both in the spectral functions and in mesoscopic quantum transport properties of the considered systems. Ou…
There is a common belief in the condensed matter community that bulk quantities become insensitive to the boundary condition in the infinite-volume limit. Here we reconsider this statement in terms of recent arguments of non-Hermitian skin effects, -strong dependence of spectra on boundary conditions for the non-Hermitian Hamiltonians-, in the traditional Green's function formalism. We find the criterion for quantities to be sensitive/insensitive against the boundary condition in Hermitian correlated/disordered systems, which is characterized by the residue theorem. We also discuss the uncerta…
Although the non-Bloch band theory is a milestone in elaborating bulk energy bands of non-Hermitian systems under the open-boundary condition (OBC), vital issues related to multivalued functions of non-Hermitian energy bands remain unsolved. In this paper, we anatomize the bulk properties of one-dimensional multiband non-Hermitian systems under OBC. We put forward the energy-band branches (EBBs) to settle the multivalued functions of non-Hermitian energy bands, which become gapped or gapless corresponding to disconnected or connected EBBs in the complex energy plane, where the branch points an…
A new perspective of the Green's function in a boundary value problem as the only eigenstate in an auxiliary formulation is introduced. In this treatment, the Green's function can be perceived as a defect state in the presence of a $δ$-function potential, the height of which depends on the Green's function itself. This approach is illustrated in one-dimensional and two-dimensional Helmholtz equation problems, with an emphasis on systems that are open and have a non-Hermitian potential. We then draw an analogy between the Green's function obtained this way and a chiral edge state circumventing …
We investigate the impact on basic quantum transport properties of disorder-induced exceptional points (EPs) that emerge in a disorder-averaged Green's function description of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals with spin- or orbital-dependent potential scattering. Remarkably, we find that EPs may promote the nearly vanishing conductance of a finite sample at the Dirac point to a sizable value that increases with disorder strength. This striking behavior exhibits a strong directional anisotropy that is closely related to the Fermi arcs connecting the EPs. We corroborate our results by numeri…
Quasi-particles described by Green's functions of equilibrium systems exhibit non-Hermitian topological phenomena because of their finite lifetime. This non-Hermitian perspective on equilibrium systems provides new insights into correlated systems and attracts much interest because of its potential to solve open questions in correlated compounds. In this paper, we provide a concise review of the non-Hermitian topological band structures for quantum many-body systems in equilibrium as well as their classification.

The topology of non-Hermitian systems is drastically shaped by the non-Hermitian skin effect, which leads to the generalized bulk-boundary correspondence and non-Bloch band theory. The essential part in formulations of bulk-boundary correspondence is a general and computable definition of topological invariants. In this paper, we introduce a construction of non-Hermitian topological invariants based directly on real-space wavefunctions, which provides a general and straightforward approach for determining non-Hermitian topology. As an illustration, we apply this formulation to several represen…
Constraints of internal symmetry on the non-Hermitian skin effect and bidirectional skin effect under the action of the Hermitian conjugate of time-reversal symmetry
The environmental influence is inevitable but often ignored in the study of electronic transport properties of small-scale systems. Such an environment-mediated interaction can generally be described by a parity-time symmetric non-Hermitian system with a balanced distribution of physical gain and loss. It is quite known in the literature that along with the conventional junction current, another current called bias-driven circular current can be established in a loop geometry depending upon the junction configuration. This current, further, induces a strong magnetic field that can even reach t…
In this letter we study the Hall conductance for a non-Hermitian Chern insulator and quantitatively describe how the Hall conductance deviates from a quantized value. We show the effects of the non-Hermitian terms on the Hall conductance are two folds. On one hand, it broadens the density-of-state of each band, because of which there always exists a non-universal bulk contribution. On the other hand, it adds decay term to the edge state, because of which the topological contribution also deviates from the quantized Chern number. We provides a simple formula for the topological contribution for…
We study the interplay of disorder and bandstructure topology in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl points. The spectrum of particles is given by the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix, which contains contributions from a Weyl Hamiltonian and complex self-energy due to electron elastic scattering on disorder. We find that the tilt-induced matrix structure of the self-energy gives rise to either a flat band or a nodal line segment at the interface of the electron and hole pockets in the bulk bandstructure of type-II Weyl semimetals depending on the Weyl cone incl…
