The non-trivial topological features in the energy band of non-Hermitian systems provide promising pathways to achieve robust physical behaviors in classical or quantum open systems. A key topological feature, unique to non-Hermitian systems, is the non-trivial winding of the energy band in the complex energy plane. Here we provide direct experimental demonstrations of such non-trivial winding, by implementing non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians along a frequency synthetic dimension formed in a ring resonator undergoing simultaneous phase and amplitude modulations, and by directly characterizing the complex band structures. Moreover, we show that the topological winding can be straightforwardly controlled by changing the modulation waveform. Our results open a pathway for the experimental synthesis and characterization of topologically non-trivial phases in non-conservative systems.
A nonzero non-Hermitian winding number indicates that a gapped system is in a nontrivial topological class due to the non-Hermiticity of its Hamiltonian. While for Hermitian systems nontrivial topological quantum numbers are reflected by the existence of edge states, a nonzero non-Hermitian winding number impacts a system's bulk response. To establish this relation, we introduce the bulk Green function, which describes the response of a gapped system to an external perturbation on timescales where the induced excitations have not propagated to the boundary yet, and show that it will grow in sp…
Non-Hermitian skin effects and exceptional points are topological phenomena characterized by integer winding numbers. In this study, we give methods to theoretically detect skin effects and exceptional points by generalizing inversion symmetry. The generalization of inversion symmetry is unique to non-Hermitian systems. We show that parities of the winding numbers can be determined from energy eigenvalues on the inversion-invariant momenta when generalized inversion symmetry is present. The simple expressions for the winding numbers allow us to easily analyze skin effects and exceptional point…
Non-Hermitian singularities are ubiquitous in non-conservative open systems. These singularities are often points of measure zero in the eigenspectrum of the system which make them difficult to access without careful engineering. Despite that, they can remotely induce observable effects when some of the system's parameters are varied along closed trajectories in the parameter space. To date, a general formalism for describing this process beyond simple cases is still lacking. Here, we bridge this gap and develop a general approach for treating this problem by utilizing the power of permutation…
Topology is central to understanding and engineering materials that display robust physical phenomena immune to imperfections. Different topological phases of matter are characterised by topological invariants. In energy-conserving (Hermitian) systems, these invariants are determined by the winding of eigenstates in momentum space. In non-Hermitian systems, a novel topological invariant is predicted to emerge from the winding of the complex eigenenergies. Here, we directly measure the non-Hermitian topological invariant arising from exceptional points in the momentum-resolved spectrum of excit…
Genuinely non-Hermitian topological phases can be realized in open systems with sufficiently strong gain and loss; in such phases, the Hamiltonian cannot be deformed into a gapped Hermitian Hamiltonian without energy bands touching each other. Comparing Green functions for periodic and open boundary conditions we find that, in general, there is no correspondence between topological invariants computed for periodic boundary conditions, and boundary eigenstates observed for open boundary conditions. Instead, we find that the non-Hermitian winding number in one dimension signals a topological pha…
The discovery of topological phases in non-Hermitian open classical and quantum systems challenges our current understanding of topological order. Non-Hermitian systems exhibit unique features with no counterparts in topological Hermitian models, such as failure of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence and non-Hermitian skin effect. Advances in the understanding of the topological properties of non-Hermitian lattices with translational invariance have been reported in several recent studies, however little is known about non-Hermitian quasicrystals. Here we disclose topological phases …
Both theoretical and experimental studies of topological phases in non-Hermitian systems have made a remarkable progress in the last few years of research. In this article, we review the key concepts pertaining to topological phases in non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with relevant examples and realistic model setups. Discussions are devoted to both the adaptations of topological invariants from Hermitian to non-Hermitian systems, as well as origins of new topological invariants in the latter setup. Unique properties such as exceptional points and complex energy landscapes lead to new topological in…
We analyze chiral topological edge modes in a non-Hermitian variant of the 2D Dirac equation. Such modes appear at interfaces between media with different "masses" and/or signs of the "non-Hermitian charge". The existence of these edge modes is intimately related to exceptional points of the bulk Hamiltonians, i.e., degeneracies in the bulk spectra of the media. We find that the topological edge modes can be divided into three families ("Hermitian-like", "non-Hermitian", and "mixed"), these are characterized by two winding numbers, describing two distinct kinds of half-integer charges carried …
Optical superlattices with sublattice symmetry subjected to a synthetic imaginary gauge field undergo a topological phase transition in the Bloch energy spectrum, characterized by the change of a spectral winding number. For a narrow gap, the phase transition is of universal form and described by a non-Hermitian Dirac equation with Lorentz-symmetry violation. A simple photonic system displaying such a phase transition is discussed, which is based on light coupling in co-propagating gratings.
Non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is a unique phenomenon studied intensively in non-Hermitian systems during the past few years. In this work, we discuss the energy dependence of NHSE by introducing nonreciprocity beyond the nearest-neighboring hopping in the one-dimensional lattices. The direction of NHSE reverses as the eigenenergy of the system under open boundary conditions (OBCs) sweeps across some critical energies. To characterize such a phenomenon, we introduce the concept of non-Hermitian skin effect edges, which separate the eigenstates localized at opposite ends of the lattice in the…
We show that the bulk-boundary correspondence for topological insulators can be modified in the presence of non-Hermiticity. We consider a one-dimensional tight-binding model with gain and loss as well as long-range hopping. The system is described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that encircles an exceptional point in momentum space. The winding number has a fractional value of 1/2. There is only one dynamically stable zero-energy edge state due to the defectiveness of the Hamiltonian. This edge state is robust to disorder due to protection by a chiral symmetry. We also discuss experimental rea…

We show that two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystals made of lossy material can exhibit non-trivial point gap topology in terms of topological winding in its complex frequency band structure. Such crystals can be either made of lossy isotropic media which is reciprocal, or lossy magneto-optical media which is non-reciprocal. We discuss the effects of reciprocity on the properties of the point gap topology. We also show that such a non-trivial point gap topology leads to non-Hermitian skin effect when the photonic crystal is truncated. In contrast to most previous studies on point gap t…
The bulk-boundary correspondence is among the central issues of non-Hermitian topological states. We show that a previously overlooked `non-Hermitian skin effect' necessitates redefinition of topological invariants in a generalized Brillouin zone. The resultant phase diagrams dramatically differ from the usual Bloch theory. Specifically, we obtain the phase diagram of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, whose topological zero modes are determined by the non-Bloch winding number instead of the Bloch-Hamiltonian-based topological number. Our work settles the issue of the breakdown of conve…
In non-Hermitian quasicrystals, mobility edges (ME) separating localized and extended states in complex energy plane can arise as a result of non-Hermitian terms in the Hamiltonian. Such ME are of topological nature, i.e. the energies of localized and extended states exhibit distinct topological structures in the complex energy plane. However, depending on the origin of non-Hermiticity, i.e. asymmetry of hopping amplitudes or complexification of the incommensurate potential phase, different winding numbers are introduced, corresponding to different transport features in the bulk of the lattice…
We present a numerical study of Anderson localization in disordered non-Hermitian lattice models with flat bands. Specifically we consider one-dimensional stub and two-dimensional kagome lattices that have a random scalar potential and a uniform imaginary vector potential and calculate the spectra of the complex energy, the participation ratio, and the winding number as a function of the strength of the imaginary vector potential, $h$. The flat-band states are found to show a double transition from localized to delocalized and back to localized states with $h$, in contrast to the dispersive-ba…
We provide a systematic study of non-Hermitian topologically charged systems. Starting from a Hermitian Hamiltonian supporting Weyl points with arbitrary topological charge, adding a non-Hermitian perturbation transforms the Weyl points to one-dimensional exceptional contours. We analytical prove that the topological charge is preserved on the exceptional contours. In contrast to Hermitian systems, the addition of gain and loss allows for a new class of topological phase transition: when two oppositely charged exceptional contours touch, the topological charge can dissipate without opening a g…
