The eta-pairing states are a set of exactly known eigenstates of the Hubbard model on hypercubic lattices, first discovered by Yang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 2144 (1989)]. These states are not many-body scar states in the Hubbard model because they occupy unique symmetry sectors defined by the so-called "eta-pairing SU(2)" symmetry. We study an extended Hubbard model with bond-charge interactions, popularized by Hirsch [Physica C 158, 326 (1989)], where the eta-pairing states survive without the eta-pairing symmetry and become true scar states. We also discuss similarities between the eta-pairing states and exact scar towers in the spin-1 XY model found by Schecter and Iadecola [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 147201 (2019)], and systematically arrive at all nearest-neighbor terms that preserve such scar towers in 1D. We also generalize these terms to arbitrary bipartite lattices. Our study of the spin-1 XY model also leads us to several new scarred models, including a spin-1/2 $J_1-J_2$ model with Dzyaloshinkskii-Moriya interaction, in realistic quantum magnet settings in 1D and 2D.
We revisit the $η$-pairing states in Hubbard models and explore their connections to quantum many-body scars to discover a universal scars mechanism. $η$-pairing occurs due to an algebraic structure known as a Spectrum Generating Algebra (SGA), giving rise to equally spaced towers of eigenstates in the spectrum. We generalize the original $η$-pairing construction and show that several Hubbard-like models on arbitrary graphs exhibit SGAs, including ones with disorder and spin-orbit coupling. We further define a Restricted Spectrum Generating Algebra (RSGA) and give examples of perturbations to …
Motivated by recent observations of ergodicity breaking due to Hilbert space fragmentation in 1D Fermi-Hubbard chains with a tilted potential [Scherg et al., arXiv:2010.12965], we show that the same system also hosts quantum many-body scars in a regime $U\approx Δ\gg J$ at electronic filling factor $ν=1$. We numerically demonstrate that the scarring phenomenology in this model is similar to other known realisations such as Rydberg atom chains, including persistent dynamical revivals and ergodicity-breaking many-body eigenstates. At the same time, we show that the mechanism of scarring in the F…
We review the explanation for resonant neutron scattering experiments in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+δ}$ and $Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca_2 O_{8+δ}$ materials from the point of view of triplet excitation in the particle-particle channel, the pi excitation. Relation of these resonances to the superconducting condensation energy and their role in stabilizing the superconducting state is discussed. Due to the superconducting fluctuations, the pi resonance may appear as a broad peak above Tc. Analogue problem to the pi excitation for the case of s-wave pairing, the eta excitation, is considered in the strong coupling limit w…
For a class of generalized Hubbard models, we determine the maximal stability region for the superconducting eta-pairing ground state. We exploit the Optimized Ground State (OGS) approach and the Lanczos diagonalization procedure to derive a sequence of improved bounds. We show that some pieces of the stability boundary are asymptotic, namely independent on the OGS cluster size. In this way, necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained to realize superconductivity in terms of an eta-pairing ground state. The phenomenon is explained by studying the properties of certain exact eigenstates of…
We compute exactly the von Neumann entanglement entropy of the eta-pairing states - a large set of exact excited eigenstates of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. For the singlet eta-pairing states the entropy scales with the logarithm of the spatial dimension of the (smaller) partition. For the eta-pairing states with finite spin magnetization density, the leading term can scale as the volume or as the area-times-log, depending on the momentum space occupation of the Fermions with flipped spins. We also compute the corrections to the leading scaling. In order to study the eigenstate thermalization hypo…
We calculate real-space static correlation functions related to basic entities of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, which emerge from the exact Bethe-ansatz solution. These entities involve complex rearrangements of the original electrons. Basic ingredients are operators related to unoccupied, singly occupied with spin up or spin down and doubly occupied sites. The spatial decay of their correlation functions is determined using an approximate mean-field-like approach based on the Zou-Anderson transformation and DMRG results for the half-filled case. The nature and spatial extent of the corre…
Quantum many-body scar states are special eigenstates of nonintegrable models with distinctive entanglement features that give rise to infinitely long-lived coherent dynamics under quantum quenches from certain initial states. We elaborate on a construction of quantum many-body scar states in which they emerge from Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) states in systems with two layers, wherein the two layers are maximally entangled. We apply this construction to spin systems as well as systems of itinerant fermions and bosons and demonstrate how symmetries can be harnessed to enhance its versatility.…
We reanalyze the Hubbard-I approximation by showing that it is equivalent to an effective Hamiltonian describing Fermionic charge fluctuations, which can be solved by Bogoliubov transformation. As the most important correction in the limit of large U and weak spin correlations we augment this Hamiltonian by further effective particles, which describe composite objects of a Fermionic charge fluctuation and a spin-, density- or eta- excitation. The scheme is valid for positive and negative U. We present results for the single particle Green's function for the two-dimensional Hubbard model with a…
We study the symmetry properties of the Hubbard model with spin-orbit interactions of Rashba and Dresselhaus type. These interactions break the rotational symmetry in spin space, so that the magnetic order cannot be excluded by using the Bogoliubov inequality method. Nevertheless, we rigorously show that the existence of the magnetic long-range orders may be ruled out when the Rashba and Dresselhaus coupling constants are equal in modulus, whereas the eta-pairing can be always ruled out, regardless of the microscopic parameters of the model. These results are obtained by imposing locally the S…
A prime characterization of many-body localized (MBL) systems is the entanglement of their eigenstates; in contrast to the typical ergodic phase whose eigenstates are volume law, MBL eigenstates obey an area law. In this work, we show that a spin-disordered Hubbard model has both a large number of area-law eigenstates as well as a large number of eigenstates whose entanglement scales logarithmically with system size (log-law). This model, then, is a microscopic Hamiltonian which is neither ergodic nor many-body localized. We establish these results through a combination of analytic arguments b…
In this work, based on the Fredkin spin chain, we introduce a family of spin-$1/2$ many-body Hamiltonians with a three-site interaction featuring a fragmented Hilbert space with coexisting quantum many-body scars. The fragmentation results from an emergent kinetic constraint resembling the conserved spin configuration in the 1D Fermi-Hubbard model in the infinite onsite repulsion limit. To demonstrate the many-body scars, we construct an exact eigenstate that is in the middle of the spectrum within each fractured sub-sector displaying either logarithmic or area-law entanglement entropy. The in…
We report detailed results on ionization in metallic quantum--dot (QD) nanorings described by the extended Hubbard model at half filling obtained by exact numerical diagonalization. In spite of very strong electron correlations, the ionization spectra are astonishingly scarce. We attribute this scarcity to a hidden quasi--symmetry, generalizing thereby similar results on optical absorption recently reported [I. Baldea and L. S. Cederbaum, \prb {\bf 75}, 125323 (2007); {\bf 77}, 165339 (2008)]. Numerical results indicate that this hidden quasi--symmetry of the extended Hubbard model does not ev…
This thesis report deals with the 1D Hubbard model and the quantum objects that diagonalize the normal ordered Hubbard hamiltonian, among those the so called PseudoFermions (PFs). These PFs have no residual energy interactions, are eta-spin and spin zero objects, and are the scatterers and the scattering centers of the theory. The S-matrix of this representation is a simple phase factor, involving the phase shifts of the zero energy forward momentum scattering events. A PF dynamical theory is developed and applied to the one-electron removal and lower Hubbard band addition cases. For any value…
It has been shown [arXiv:2007.00845] that three families of highly symmetric states are many-body scars for any spin-1/2 fermionic Hamiltonian of the form $H_0+OT$, where $T$ is a generator of an appropriate Lie group. One of these families consists of the well-known $η$-pairing states. In addition to having the usual properties of scars, these families of states are insensitive to electromagnetic noise and have advantages for storing and processing quantum information. In this paper we show that a number of well-known coupling terms, such as the Hubbard and the Heisenberg interactions, and th…
