We discover a variety of exact quantum many-body scars in higher-spin kinetically constrained models, through the recently developed DMRG-S algorithm [Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 020402]. Specifically, for the higher-spin PXP model on arbitrary bipartite lattices of any spatial dimension, we find exact many-body scars that are equidistantly spaced in the energy spectrum and exhibit similar structures to the ground state of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model. For the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model with a tilted potential in a certain parameter regime, whose effective model is equivalent to a kinetically constrained spin model with four degrees of freedom on each site, we find several many-body scars at energy $E=0$ and $E=\pm \sqrt{2}$ that can be exactly represented as matrix product states with finite bond dimensions. Our results demonstrate that larger local degrees of freedom in the kinetically constrained models provide a much broader space for the emergence of quantum many-body scars and weak ergodicity breaking.
We introduce a family of non-integrable 1D lattice models that feature robust periodic revivals under a global quench from certain initial product states, thus generalizing the phenomenon of many-body scarring recently observed in Rydberg atom quantum simulators. Our construction is based on a systematic embedding of the single-site unitary dynamics into a kinetically-constrained many-body system. We numerically demonstrate that this construction yields new families of models with robust wave-function revivals, and it includes kinetically-constrained quantum clock models as a special case. We …
We investigate how imposing kinetic restrictions on quantum particles that would otherwise hop freely on a two-dimensional lattice can lead to topologically ordered states. The kinetically constrained models introduced here are derived as a generalization of strongly interacting particle systems in which hoppings are given by flux-lattice Hamiltonians and may be relevant to optically driven cold-atom systems. After introducing a broad class of models, we focus on particular realizations and show numerically that they exhibit topological order, as witnessed by topological ground-state degenerac…
We study a kinetically constrained pair hopping model that arises within a Landau level in the quantum Hall effect. At filling $ν= 1/3$, the model exactly maps onto the so-called "PXP model", a constrained model for the Rydberg atom chain that is numerically known to exhibit ETH-violating states in the middle of the spectrum or quantum many-body scars. Indeed, particular charge density wave configurations exhibit the same revivals seen in the PXP model. We generalize the mapping to fillings factors $ν= p/(2p+1)$, and show that the model is equivalent to non-integrable spin-chains within partic…
Recent realization of a kinetically-constrained chain of Rydberg atoms by Bernien et al. [Nature 551, 579 (2017)] resulted in the observation of unusual revivals in the many-body quantum dynamics. In our previous work [arXiv:1711.03528] such dynamics was attributed to the existence of "quantum scarred" eigenstates in the many-body spectrum of the experimentally realized model. Here we present a detailed study of the eigenstate properties of the same model. We find that the majority of the eigenstates exhibit anomalous thermalization: the observable expectation values converge to their Gibbs en…
We propose an entanglement-enhanced sensing scheme that is robust against spatially inhomogeneous always-on Ising interactions. Our strategy is to tailor coherent quantum dynamics employing the Hilbert-space fragmentation (HSF), a recently recognized mechanism that evades thermalization in kinetically constrained many-body systems. Specifically, we analytically show that the emergent HSF caused by strong Ising interactions enables us to design a stable state where part of the spins is effectively decoupled from the rest of the system. Using the decoupled spins as a probe to measure a transvers…
Motivated by recent experimental observations of coherent many-body revivals in a constrained Rydberg atom chain, we construct a weak quasi-local deformation of the Rydberg blockade Hamiltonian, which makes the revivals virtually perfect. Our analysis suggests the existence of an underlying non-integrable Hamiltonian which supports an emergent SU(2)-spin dynamics within a small subspace of the many-body Hilbert space. We show that such perfect dynamics necessitates the existence of atypical, nonergodic energy eigenstates - quantum many-body scars. Furthermore, using these insights, we construc…
We consider the spectrum of a $U(1)$ quantum link model where gauge fields are realized as $S=1/2$ spins and demonstrate a new mechanism for generating quantum many-body scars (high-energy eigenstates that violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis) in a constrained Hilbert space. Many-body dynamics with local constraints has attracted much attention due to the recent discovery of non-ergodic behavior in quantum simulators based on Rydberg atoms. Lattice gauge theories provide natural examples of constrained systems since physical states must be gauge-invariant. In our case, the Hamilton…
