We characterize the photometric and kinematic properties of simulated early-type galaxy (ETG) stellar halos, and compare them to observations. We select a sample of ~1200 ETGs in the TNG100 and TNG50 simulations, spanning a stellar mass range of $10^{10.3}-10^{12}M_{\odot}$ and within the range of (g-r) colour and lambda-ellipticity diagram populated by observed ETGs. We determine photometric parameters, intrinsic shapes, and kinematic observables in their extended stellar halos. We study the variation in kinematics from center to halo and connect it to a change in the intrinsic shape of the galaxies. We find that the simulated galaxy sample reproduces the diversity of kinematic properties observed in ETG halos. Simulated fast rotators (FRs) divide almost evenly in one third having flat lambda profiles and high halo rotational support, a third with gently decreasing profiles, and another third with low halo rotation. Slow rotators (SRs) tend to have increased rotation in the outskirts, with half of them exceeding lambda=0.2. For $M_{*}>10^{11.5}M_{\odot}$ halo rotation is unimportant. A similar variety of properties is found for the stellar halo intrinsic shapes. Rotational support and shape are deeply related: the kinematic transition to lower rotational support is accompanied by a change towards rounder intrinsic shape. Triaxiality in the halos of FRs increases outwards and with stellar mass. Simulated SRs have relatively constant triaxiality profiles. Simulated stellar halos show a large variety of structural properties, with quantitative but no clear qualitative differences between FRs and SRs. At the same stellar mass, stellar halo properties show a gradual transition and significant overlap between the two families, despite the clear bimodality in the central regions. This is in agreement with observations of extended photometry and kinematics. [abridged]
Early-type galaxies (ETGs) possess total density profiles close to isothermal, which can lead to non-Gaussian line-of-sight velocity dispersion (LOSVD) under anisotropic stellar orbits. However, recent observations of local ETGs in the MASSIVE Survey reveal outer kinematic structures at $1.5 R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ (effective radius) that are inconsistent with fixed isothermal density profiles; the authors proposed varying density profiles as an explanation. We aim to verify this conjecture and understand the influence of stellar assembly on these kinematic features through mock ETGs in IllustrisTNG…
Stellar halos in early-type galaxies (ETGs) are shaped by their accretion and merger histories. We use a sample of 1114 ETGs in the TNG100 simulation with stellar masses $10^{10.3}\leq M_{*}/M_\odot\leq 10^{12}$, selected at z=0 within the range of g-r colour and lambda-ellipticity diagram populated by observed ETGs. We study how the rotational support and intrinsic shapes of the stellar halos depend on the fraction of accreted stars, overall and separately by major, minor, and mini mergers. Accretion histories in TNG100 ETGs as well as the radial distributions of ex-situ stars $f_{ex}(R)$ str…
We compare stellar mass surface density, metallicity, age, and line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles in massive ($M_*\geq10^{10.5}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) present-day early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the MaNGA survey with simulated galaxies from the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG suite. We find an excellent agreement between the stellar mass surface density profiles of MaNGA and TNG100 ETGs, both in shape and normalisation. Moreover, TNG100 reproduces the shapes of the profiles of stellar metallicity and age, as well as the normalisation of velocity dispersion distributions of MaNGA ETG…
We explore the isothermal total density profiles of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the IllustrisTNG simulation. For the selected 559 ETGs at $z = 0$ with stellar mass $10^{10.7}\mathrm{M}_{\odot} \leqslant M_{\ast} \leqslant 10^{11.9}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, the total power-law slope has a mean of $\langleγ^{\prime}\rangle = 2.011 \pm 0.007$ and a scatter of $σ_{γ^{\prime}} = 0.171$ over the radial range 0.4 to 4 times the stellar half mass radius. Several correlations between $γ^{\prime}$ and galactic properties including stellar mass, effective radius, stellar surface density, central velocity di…
We investigate how feedback and environment shapes the X-ray scaling relations of early-type galaxies (ETGs), especially at the low-mass end. We select central-ETGs from the IllustrisTNG-100 box that have stellar masses $\log_{10}(M_{\ast}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}})\in[10.7, 11.9]$. We derive mock X-ray luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$) and spectroscopic-like temperature ($T_{\mathrm{sl, 500}}$) of hot gas within $R_{500}$ of the ETG haloes using the MOCK-X pipeline. The scaling between $L_{\mathrm{X, 500}}$ and the total mass within 5 effective radii ($M_{5R_{\rm e}}$) agrees well with observed ETG…
We study the evolutionary trend of the total density profile of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in IllustrisTNG. To this end, we trace ETGs from $z=0$ to $z=4$ and measure the power-law slope $γ^{\prime}$ of the total density profile for their main progenitors. We find that their $γ^{\prime}$ steepen on average during $z\sim4-2$, then becoming shallower until $z=1$, after which they remain almost constant, aside from a residual trend of becoming shallower towards $z=0$. We also compare to a statistical sample of ETGs at different redshifts, selected based on their luminosity profiles and stellar ma…
The star formation main sequence (SFMS) is a tight relation between the galaxy star formation rate (SFR) and its total stellar mass ($M_\star$). Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are often considered as low-SFR outliers of this relation. We study, for the first time, the separated distribution in the SFR vs. $M_\star$ of bulges and discs of 49 ETGs from the CALIFA survey. This is achieved using C2D, a new code to perform spectro-photometric decompositions of integral field spectroscopy datacubes. Our results reflect that: i) star formation always occurs in the disc component and not in bulges; ii) st…
We measure the total mass-density profiles out to three effective radii for a sample of 63 $z \sim 0.5$, massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) acting as strong gravitational lenses through a joint analysis of lensing and stellar dynamics. The compilation is selected from three galaxy-scale strong-lens samples including the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Emission-Line Lens Survey (BELLS), BELLS for GALaxy-Ly$α$ EmitteR sYstems Survey, and Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S). Utilizing the wide source-redshift coverage (0.8--3.5) provided by these three samples, we build a statistic…
In the hierarchical two-phase formation scenario, the extended halos of early type galaxies (ETGs) are expected to have different physical properties from those of the galaxies' central regions. This work aims at characterizing the kinematic properties of ETG halos using planetary nebulae (PNe) as tracers, which allow us to overcome the limitations of absorption line spectroscopy of continuum at low surface brightness. We present two-dimensional velocity and velocity dispersion fields for 33 ETGs, including both fast (FRs) and slow rotators (SRs), making this the largest kinematic survey to-da…
In this contribution we report on a kinematic study for 33 early type galaxies (ETGs) into their outer halos (average 6 effective radii, Re). We use planetary nebulae (PNe) as tracers of the main stellar population at large radii, where absorption line spectroscopy is no longer feasible. The ePN.S survey is the largest survey to-date of ETG kinematics with PNe, based on data from the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph (PN.S), counter-dispersed imaging, and high-resolution PN spectroscopy. We find that ETGs typically show a kinematic transition between inner regions and halos. Slow rotators have inc…
We present radial gas-phase metallicity profiles, gradients, and break radii at redshift $z = 0 - 3$ from the TNG50-1 star-forming galaxy population. These metallicity profiles are characterized by an emphasis on identifying the steep inner gradient and flat outer gradient. From this, the break radius, $r_{\rm Break}$, is defined as the region where the transition occurs. We observe the break radius having a positive trend with mass that weakens with redshift. When normalized by the stellar half-mass radius, the break radius has a weaker relation with both mass and redshift. To test if our res…
At fixed stellar mass $M_*$, the effective radius $R_{\rm e}$ of massive satellite early-type galaxies (ETGs) in galaxy clusters is, on average, larger at lower redshift. We study theoretically this size evolution using the state-of-the-art cosmological simulation IllustrisTNG100: we sampled $75$ simulated satellite ETGs at redshift $z=0$ with $M_* \ge 10^{10.4} M_{\odot}$ belonging to the two most massive ($\approx 10^{14.6} M_{\odot} $) haloes of the simulation. We traced back in time the two clusters' main progenitors and we selected their satellite ETGs at $z>0$ with the same criterion ado…
We have carried out a controlled comparison of the structural and kinematic properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around Milky Way mass galaxies in the Illustris and IllustrisTNG simulations. Very striking differences are found. At z=0, gas column density and temperature profiles at large radii ($\sim 100$ kpc) correlate strongly with disk gas mass fraction in Illustris, but not in TNG. The neutral gas at large radii is preferentially aligned in the plane of the disk in TNG, whereas it is much more isotropic in Illustris. The vertical coherence scale of the rotationally supported gas i…
Investigating the gravitational field in the early-type galaxies (ETGs, i.e. ellipticals and lenticulars) up to large radii is observationally difficult. It is questionable how the radial acceleration (RAR) in the ETGs looks like, i.e. the relation between the dynamically inferred gravitational acceleration and the acceleration expected from the distribution of the visible matter. This relation is nearly universal for the spiral galaxies, in agreement with the MOND modified dynamics paradigm. In this contribution, we investigate a sample of 15 ETGs. We extract their full kinematic profiles out…

The content and distribution of cool interstellar medium (ISM, <30K) can indicate the evolutionary mechanisms that transform late type to early type galaxies (ETGs). To investigate this, ALMA observations of 12CO[2-1] line emission were obtained for five dusty ETGs from a complete sample in low-density environments. Four of the ETGs have massive (approximately 10^9 Msolar), extended molecular gas reservoirs with effective radii of approximately 3 to 5 kpc. This work provides a kinematic and structural analysis of these observations, to explore possible evolutionary mechanisms. Axisymmetric or …
(abridged) Context. Gravitational fields at the outskirts of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are difficult to constrain observationally. It thus remains poorly explored how well the LCDM and MOND hypotheses agree with ETGs. Aims. This led us to gather a large sample of ETGs and examine homogeneously which dark matter halos they occupy, whether the halos follow the theoretically predicted stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) and the halo mass-concentration relation (HMCR), whether ETGs obey MOND and the radial acceleration relation (RAR) observed for late-type galaxies (LTGs), and finally whether LC…
It has been well established that dwarf early-type galaxies (ETGs) can often exhibit a complex morphology, whereby faint spiral arms, bars, edge-on disks or clumps are embedded in their main, brighter diffuse body. In our first paper (Brought to Light I: Michea et al. 2021), we developed a new method for robustly identifying and extracting substructures in deep imaging data of dwarf ETGs in the Virgo galaxy cluster. Here we apply our method to a sample of 23 dwarf ETGs in the Fornax galaxy cluster, out of which 9 have disk-like and 14 have clump-like substructures. According to Fornax Deep Sur…
The morphological, spectroscopic and kinematical properties of the warm interstellar medium (wim) in early-type galaxies (ETGs) hold key observational constraints to nuclear activity and the buildup history of these massive quiescent systems. High-quality integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data with a wide spectral and spatial coverage, such as those from the CALIFA survey, offer a precious opportunity for advancing our understanding in this respect. We use deep IFS data from CALIFA (califa.caha.es) to study the wim over the entire extent and optical spectral range of 32 nearby ETGs. We find th…

Rotation curves have traditionally been difficult to trace for early-type galaxies (ETGs) because they often lack a high-density disk of cold gas as in late-type galaxies (LTGs). We derive rotation curves for three lenticular galaxies from the ATLAS3D survey, combining CO data in the inner parts with deep HI data in the outer regions, extending out to 10-20 effective radii. We also use Spitzer photometry at 3.6 um to decompose the rotation curves into the contributions of baryons and dark matter (DM). We find that (1) the rotation-curve shapes of these ETGs are similar to those of LTGs of simi…
Using the TNG100 (100 Mpc)^3 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project, we demonstrate a strong connection between the onset of star formation quenching and the stellar size of galaxies. We do so by tracking the evolutionary history of extended and normal-size galaxies selected at z=2 with log(M_star) = 10.2 - 11 and stellar-half-mass-radii above and within 1-sigma of the stellar size--stellar mass relation, respectively. We match the stellar mass and star formation rate distributions of the two populations. By z=1, only 36% of the extended massive galaxies have quenched, in contrast to a quenche…
We observed twelve nearby HI -detected early-type galaxies (ETGs) of stellar mass $\sim 10^{10}M\odot \leq M_* \leq \sim 10^{11}M\odot$ with the Mitchell Integral-Field Spectrograph, reaching approximately three half-light radii in most cases. We extracted line-of-sight velocity distributions for the stellar and gaseous components. We find little evidence of transitions in the stellar kinematics of the galaxies in our sample beyond the central effective radius, with centrally fast-rotating galaxies remaining fast-rotating and centrally slow-rotating galaxies likewise remaining slow-rotating. T…
We analyse the globular cluster (GC) systems of a sample of 15 massive, compact early-type galaxies (ETGs), 13 of which have already been identified as good relic galaxy candidates on the basis of their compact morphologies, old stellar populations and stellar kinematics. These relic galaxy candidates are likely the nearby counterparts of high redshift red nugget galaxies. Using F814W (~I) and F160W (~H) data from the WFC3 camara onboard the Hubble Space Telescope we determine the total number, luminosity function, specific frequency, colour and spatial distribution of the GC systems. We find …
Recent X-ray observations have revealed remarkable correlations between the masses of central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the X-ray properties of the hot atmospheres permeating their host galaxies, thereby indicating the crucial role of the atmospheric gas in tracing SMBH growth in the high-mass regime. We examine this topic theoretically using the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations and provide insights to the nature of this SMBH -- gaseous halo connection. By carrying out a mock X-ray analysis for a mass-selected sample of TNG100 simulated galaxies at $z=0$, we inspect the relatio…

The heavyweight stellar initial mass function (IMF) observed in the cores of massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) has been linked to formation of their cores in an initial swiftly-quenched rapid starburst. However, the outskirts of ETGs are thought to be assembled via the slow accumulation of smaller systems in which the star formation is less extreme; this suggests the form of the IMF should exhibit a radial trend in ETGs. Here we report radial stellar population gradients out to the half-light radii of a sample of eight nearby ETGs. Spatially resolved spectroscopy at 0.8-1.35μm from the VLT's …
The timescales for galaxy quenching offer clues to its underlying physical drivers. We investigate central galaxy quenching timescales in the IllustrisTNG 100-1 simulation, their evolution over time, and the pre-quenching properties of galaxies that predict their quenching timescales. Defining quenching duration $τ_q$ as the time between crossing sSFR thresholds, we find that $\sim$40% of galaxies quench rapidly with $τ_q<$1 Gyr, but a substantial tail of galaxies can take up to 10 Gyr to quench. Furthermore, 29% of galaxies that left the star forming main sequence (SFMS) more than 2 Gyr ago n…

In the era of precision cosmology and ever-improving cosmological simulations, a better understanding of different galaxy components such as bulges and discs will give us new insight into galactic formation and evolution. Based on the fact that the stellar populations of the constituent components of galaxies differ by their dynamical properties, we develop two simple models for galaxy decomposition using the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. The first model uses a single dynamical parameter and can distinguish 4 components: thin disc, thick disc, counter-rotating disc and b…
The late assembly of massive galaxies is thought to be dominated by stellar accretion in their outskirts (beyond 2 effective radii Re) due to dry, minor galaxy mergers. We use observations of 1010 passive early-type galaxies (ETGs) within z<0.15 from SDSS IV MaNGA to search for evidence of this accretion. The outputs from the stellar population fitting codes FIREFLY, pPXF, and Prospector are compared to control for systematic errors in stellar metallicity (Z) estimation. We find that the average radial logZ/Zsun profiles of ETGs in various stellar mass (M) bins are not linear. As a result, the…
Observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) and molecular gas show that 50% of all nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) contain some cold gas. Molecular gas is always found in small gas discs in the central region of the galaxy, while neutral hydrogen is often distributed in a low-column density disc or ring typically extending well beyond the stellar body. Dust is frequently found in ETGs as well. The goal of our study is to understand the link between dust and cold gas in nearby ETGs as a function of HI content. We analyse deep optical $g-r$ images obtained with the MegaCam camera at the Canada-Franc…
For 123 local galaxies with directly-measured black hole masses ($M_{\rm BH}$), we provide the host spheroid's Sérsic index ($\rm n_{sph}$), effective half-light radius ($\rm R_{e,sph}$), and effective surface brightness ($μ_e$), obtained from careful multi-component decompositions, and we use these to derive the morphology-dependent $M_{\rm BH}$--$\rm n_{sph}$ and $M_{\rm BH}$--$\rm R_{e,sph}$ relations. We additionally present the morphology-dependent $M_{\rm *,sph}$--$\rm n_{sph}$ and $M_{\rm *,sph}$--$\rm R_{e,sph}$ relations. We explored differences due to: early-type galaxies (ETGs) vers…
We recently developed an automated method, auto-GMM to decompose simulated galaxies. It extracts kinematic structures in an accurate, efficient, and unsupervised way. We use auto-GMM to study the stellar kinematic structures of disk galaxies from the TNG100 run of IllustrisTNG. We identify four to five structures that are commonly present among the diverse galaxy population. Structures having strong to moderate rotation are defined as cold and warm disks, respectively. Spheroidal structures dominated by random motions are classified as bulges or stellar halos, depending on how tightly bound th…
A significant fraction of nearby late-type galaxies are lopsided. We study the asymmetry of the stellar component in a sample of well-resolved disky galaxies selected from the last snapshot of the Illustris TNG100 simulation based on their flatness and rotational support. Among 1912 disks, we identify 161 objects with significant asymmetry in terms of the m=1 Fourier mode of the stellar component within (1-2) stellar half-mass radii and describe their properties using three representative examples. The profiles of the m=1 mode typically increase with radius, and the corresponding phase is cons…
The hypothesis of a universal initial mass function (IMF) -- motivated by observations in nearby stellar systems -- has been recently challenged by the discovery of a systematic variation of the IMF with the central velocity dispersion, σ, of early-type galaxies (ETGs), towards an excess of low-mass stars in high-σ galaxies. This trend has been derived so far from integrated spectra, and remains unexplained at present. To test whether such trend depends on the local properties within a galaxy, we have obtained new, extremely deep, spectroscopic data, for three nearby ETGs, two galaxies with hi…
We study a sample of bar-like galaxies in the Illustris TNG100 simulation, in which almost the whole stellar component is in the form of a prolate spheroid. The sample is different from the late-type barred galaxies studied before. In addition to the requirement of a high enough stellar mass and resolution, the 277 galaxies were selected based on the single condition of a low enough ratio of the intermediate to long axis of the stellar component. We followed the mass and shape evolution of the galaxies as well as their interactions with other objects and divided them into three classes based o…
Dwarf early-type galaxies (ETGs) display a rich diversity in their photometric, structural, and dynamical properties. In this work, we address their structural complexity by studying with deep imaging a sample of nine dwarf ETGs from the Virgo galaxy cluster, characterized by having faint disk features, such as bars and spiral arms, which lie mostly hidden within the bright diffuse light of the galaxies. We present a new, robust method that aims to identify and extract the disk substructure embedded in these dwarf ETGs. The method consists in an iterative procedure that gradually separates a g…
We use observations from the GEMINI-N/GMOS integral-field spectrograph (IFS) to obtain spatially resolved stellar kinematics of the central $\sim 1$ kpc of 20 early-type galaxies (ETGs) with stellar masses greater than $10^{11.7} M_\odot$ in the MASSIVE survey. Together with observations from the wide-field Mitchell IFS at McDonald Observatory in our earlier work, we obtain unprecedentedly detailed kinematic maps of local massive ETGs, covering a scale of $\sim 0.1-30$ kpc. The high ($\sim 120$) signal-to-noise of the GMOS spectra enable us to obtain two-dimensional maps of the line-of-sight v…
Why the Northern Hemisphere Needs a 30-40m Telescope and the Science at Stake: Shaping Galaxies and Their Stars with Stellar Population Gradients, IMF Variations and Environmental Drivers in Cluster Early-Type Galaxies
Context. This is the third study of a series dedicated to the observed parallelism of properties between Galaxy Clusters and Groups(GCGs) and early-type galaxies (ETGs). Aims. Here we investigate the physical origin of the Mass-Radius Relation (MRR). Methods. Having collected literature data on masses and radii for objects going from Globular Clusters (GCs) to ETGs and GCGs, we set up the MR-plane and compare the observed distribution with the MRR predicted by theoretical models both for the monolithic and hierarchical scenarios. Results. We argue that the distributions of stellar systems in t…
We investigate the disc-halo connection in massive (Mstar/Msun>5e10) disc galaxies from the cosmological hydrodynamical simulations EAGLE and IllustrisTNG, and compare it with that inferred from the study of HI rotation curves in nearby massive spirals from the Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves (SPARC) dataset. We find that discrepancies between the the simulated and observed discs arise both on global and on local scales. Globally, the simulated discs inhabit halos that are a factor ~4 (in EAGLE) and ~2 (in IllustrisTNG) more massive than those derived from the rotation curve an…
Hot gaseous atmospheres that permeate galaxies and extend far beyond their stellar distribution, where they are commonly referred to as the circumgalactic medium (CGM), imprint important information about feedback processes powered by the stellar populations of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes (SMBH). In this work we study the properties of this hot X-ray emitting medium using the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations. We analyse their mock X-ray spectra, obtained from the diffuse and metal-enriched gas in TNG100 and TNG50, and compare the results with X-ray observations of …
We use globular cluster kinematics data, primarily from the SLUGGS survey, to measure the dark matter fraction ($f_{\rm DM}$) and the average dark matter density ($\left< ρ_{\rm DM} \right>$) within the inner 5 effective radii ($R_{\rm e}$) for 32 nearby early--type galaxies (ETGs) with stellar mass log $(M_*/\rm M_\odot)$ ranging from $10.1$ to $11.8$. We compare our results with a simple galaxy model based on scaling relations as well as with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations where the dark matter profile has been modified through various physical processes. We find a high $f_{\rm DM}$…
Large galaxies may contain an "atmosphere" of hot interstellar X-ray gas, and the temperature and radial density profile of this gas can be used to measure the total mass of the galaxy contained within a given radius r. We use this technique for 102 early-type galaxies (ETGs) with stellar masses M_* > 10^10 M_Sun, to evaluate the mass fraction of dark matter (DM) within the fiducial radius r = 5 r_e, denoted f_5 = f_{DM}(5r_e). On average, these systems have a median f_5 = 0.8 - 0.9 with a typical galaxy-to-galaxy scatter +-0.15. Comparisons with mass estimates made through the alternative tec…
Observations of strong gravitational lensing, stellar kinematics, and larger-scale tracers enable accurate measures of the distribution of dark matter (DM) and baryons in massive early-type galaxies (ETGs). While such techniques have been applied to galaxy-scale and cluster-scale lenses, the paucity of intermediate-mass systems with high-quality data has precluded a uniform analysis of mass-dependent trends. With the aim of bridging this gap, we present new observations and analyses of 10 group-scale lenses at <z>=0.36 characterized by Einstein radii theta_Ein=2.5"-5.1" and a mean halo mass of…
We perform spatially resolved stellar population analysis for a sample of 69 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA integral field spectroscopic survey, including 48 ellipticals and 21 S0's. We generate and quantitatively characterize profiles of light-weighted mean stellar age and metallicity within $\lesssim 2R_e$, as a function of radius and stellar-mass surface density $μ_*$. We study in detail the dependence of profiles on galaxies' global properties, including velocity dispersion $σ_e$, stellar mass, morphology. ETGs are universally characterized by strong, negative metallicity gradi…
We measure the radial profiles of the stellar velocity dispersions, $σ(R)$, for 90 early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the MASSIVE survey, a volume-limited integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) galaxy survey targeting all northern-sky ETGs with absolute $K$-band magnitude $M_K < -25.3$ mag, or stellar mass $M_* > 4 \times 10^{11} M_\odot$, within 108 Mpc. Our wide-field 107" $\times$ 107" IFS data cover radii as large as 40 kpc, for which we quantify separately the inner (2 kpc) and outer (20 kpc) logarithmic slopes $γ_{\rm inner}$ and $γ_{\rm outer}$ of $σ(R)$. While $γ_{\rm inner}$ is mostly negative…
Context: Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are divided into slow and fast rotators (FRs and SRs) according to the degree of ordered rotation of their stellar populations. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations indicate that galaxies form as FRs before their rotational support decreases, usually because of mergers. Aims: We aimed to investigate this process observationally for galaxies outside of clusters. Methods: We made use of the fact that different merger types leave different traces that have different lifetimes. We statistically analyzed multiple characteristics of galaxies that are expected t…
