We propose a graph-based extension of Boolean logic called Boolean Graph Logic (BGL). Construing formula trees as the cotrees of cographs, we may state semantic notions such as evaluation and entailment in purely graph-theoretic terms, whence we recover the definition of BGL. Naturally, it is conservative over usual Boolean logic.
Our contributions are the following:
(1) We give a natural semantics of BGL based on Boolean relations, i.e. it is a multivalued semantics, and show adequacy of this semantics for the corresponding notions of entailment. (2) We show that the complexity of evaluation is NP-complete for arbitrary graphs (as opposed to ALOGTIME-complete for formulas), while entailment is $Π^p_2$-complete (as opposed to coNP-complete for formulas). (3) We give a 'recursive' algorithm for evaluation by induction on the modular decomposition of graphs. (Though this is not polynomial-time, cf. point (2) above). (4) We characterise evaluation in a game-theoretic setting, in terms of both static and sequentical strategies, extending the classical notion of positional game forms beyond cographs. (5) We give an axiomatisation of BGL, inspired by deep-inference proof theory, and show soundness and completeness for the corresponding notions of entailment.
One particular feature of the graph-theoretic setting is that it escapes certain no-go theorems such as a recent result of Das and Strassburger, that there is no linear axiomatisation of the linear fragment of Boolean logic (equivalently the multiplicative fragment of Japaridze's Computability Logic or Blass' game semantics for Mutliplicative Linear Logic).
We introduce a new variant of dependence logic called Boolean dependence logic. In Boolean dependence logic dependence atoms are of the type =(x_1,...,x_n,α), where αis a Boolean variable. Intuitively, with Boolean dependence atoms one can express quantification of relations, while standard dependence atoms express quantification over functions. We compare the expressive power of Boolean dependence logic to dependence logic and first-order logic enriched by partially-ordered connectives. We show that the expressive power of Boolean dependence logic and dependence logic coincide. We define natu…
We show confluence of a conditional term rewriting system CL-pc${}^1$, which is an extension of Combinatory Logic by Boolean constants. This solves problem 15 from the RTA list of open problems. The proof has been fully formalised in the Coq proof assistant.
This paper presents an investigation on the structure of conditional events and on the probability measures which arise naturally in this context. In particular we introduce a construction which defines a (finite) {\em Boolean algebra of conditionals} from any (finite) Boolean algebra of events. By doing so we distinguish the properties of conditional events which depend on probability and those which are intrinsic to the logico-algebraic structure of conditionals. Our main result provides a way to regard standard two-place conditional probabilities as one-place probability functions on condit…
We consider a 2-valued non-deterministic connective $\wedge \hskip-5.5pt \vee$ defined by the table resulting from the entry-wise union of the tables of conjunction and disjunction. Being half conjunction and half disjunction we named it platypus. The value of $\wedge \hskip-5.5pt \vee$ is not completely determined by the input, contrasting with usual notion of Boolean connective. We call non-deterministic Boolean connective any connective based on multi-functions over the Boolean set. In this way, non-determinism allows for an extended notion of truth-functional connective. Unexpectedly, this…
We study the computational complexity of model checking and satisfiability problems of polyadic modal logics extended with permutations and Boolean operators on accessibility relations. First, we show that the combined complexity of the model checking problem for the resulting logic is PTime-complete. Secondly, we show that the satisfiability problem of polyadic modal logic extended with negation on accessibility relations is ExpTime-complete. Finally, we show that the satisfiability problem of polyadic modal logic with permutations and Boolean operators on accessibility relations is ExpTime-c…

This work contributes to the domains of Boolean algebra and of Bayesian probability, by proposing an algebraic extension of Boolean algebras, which implements an operator for the Bayesian conditional inference and is closed under this operator. It is known since the work of Lewis (Lewis' triviality) that it is not possible to construct such conditional operator within the space of events. Nevertheless, this work proposes an answer which complements Lewis' triviality, by the construction of a conditional operator outside the space of events, thus resulting in an algebraic extension. In particul…
We investigate the possibility of extending the non-functionally complete logic of a collection of Boolean connectives by the addition of further Boolean connectives that make the resulting set of connectives functionally complete. More precisely, we will be interested in checking whether an axiomatization for Classical Propositional Logic may be produced by merging Hilbert-style calculi for two disjoint incomplete fragments of it. We will prove that the answer to that problem is a negative one, unless one of the components includes only top-like connectives.
Christine Tasson introduced an algebraic notion of totality for a denotational model of linear logic in the category of vector spaces. The notion of total boolean function is, in a way, quite intuitive. This note provides a positive answer to the question of completeness of the "boolean centroidal calculus" w.r.t. total boolean functions.
We present a substructural epistemic logic, based on Boolean BI, in which the epistemic modalities are parametrized on agents' local resources. The new modalities can be seen as generalizations of the usual epistemic modalities. The logic combines Boolean BI's resource semantics --- we introduce BI and its resource semantics at some length --- with epistemic agency. We illustrate the use of the logic in systems modelling by discussing some examples about access control, including semaphores, using resource tokens. We also give a labelled tableaux calculus and establish soundness and completene…
In standard epistemic logic, knowing that p is the same as knowing that p is true, but it does not say anything about understanding p or knowing its meaning. In this paper, we present a conservative extension of Public Announcement Logic (PAL) in which agents have knowledge or belief about both the truth values and the meanings of propositions. We give a complete axiomatization of PAL with Boolean Definitions and discuss various examples. An agent may understand a proposition without knowing its truth value or the other way round. Moreover, multiple agents can agree on something without agreei…
The term ``Boolean category'' should be used for describing an object that is to categories what a Boolean algebra is to posets. More specifically, a Boolean category should provide the abstract algebraic structure underlying the proofs in Boolean Logic, in the same sense as a Cartesian closed category captures the proofs in intuitionistic logic and a *-autonomous category captures the proofs in linear logic. However, recent work has shown that there is no canonical axiomatisation of a Boolean category. In this work, we will see a series (with increasing strength) of possible such axiomatisati…
Linear rules have played an increasing role in structural proof theory in recent years. It has been observed that the set of all sound linear inference rules in Boolean logic is already coNP-complete, i.e. that every Boolean tautology can be written as a (left- and right-)linear rewrite rule. In this paper we study properties of systems consisting only of linear inferences. Our main result is that the length of any 'nontrivial' derivation in such a system is bound by a polynomial. As a consequence there is no polynomial-time decidable sound and complete system of linear inferences, unless coNP…
Second-order Boolean logic is a generalization of QBF, whose constant alternation fragments are known to be complete for the levels of the exponential time hierarchy. We consider two types of restriction of this logic: 1) restrictions to term constructions, 2) restrictions to the form of the Boolean matrix. Of the first sort, we consider two kinds of restrictions: firstly, disallowing nested use of proper function variables, and secondly stipulating that each function variable must appear with a fixed sequence of arguments. Of the second sort, we consider Horn, Krom, and core fragments of the …

Quantified Boolean logic results from adding operators to Boolean logic for existentially and universally quantifying variables. This extends the reach of Boolean logic by enabling a variety of applications that have been explored over the decades. The existential quantification of literals (variable states) and its applications have also been studied in the literature. In this paper, we complement this by studying universal literal quantification and its applications, particularly to explainable AI. We also provide a novel semantics for quantification, discuss the interplay between variable/l…
We propose two models of random quantified boolean formulas and their natural random disjunctive logic program counterparts. The models extend the standard models of random k-CNF formulas and the Chen-Interian model of random 2QBFs. The first model controls the generation of programs and QSAT formulas by imposing a specific structure on rules and clauses, respectively. The second model is based on a family of QSAT formulas in a non-clausal form. We provide theoretical bounds for the phase transition region in our models, and show experimentally the presence of the easy-hard-easy pattern and it…
In this paper we investigate an extended version of modal dependence logic by allowing arbitrary Boolean connectives. Modal dependence logic was recently introduced by Jouko Väänänen by extending modal logic by a the dependence atom dep(.). In this paper we study the computational complexity of the model checking problem. For a complete classification of arbitrary Boolean functions we are using a Lattice approach introduced by Emil Post. This classification is done for all fragments of the logical language allowing modalities $\Diamond$ and $\Box$, the dependence atom, and logical symbols for …

It is feasible and practically-valuable to bridge the characteristics between graph neural networks (GNNs) and logical reasoning. Despite considerable efforts and successes witnessed to solve Boolean satisfiability (SAT), it remains a mystery of GNN-based solvers for more complex predicate logic formulae. In this work, we conjectures with some evidences, that generally-defined GNNs present several limitations to certify the unsatisfiability (UNSAT) in Boolean formulae. It implies that GNNs may probably fail in learning the logical reasoning tasks if they contain proving UNSAT as the sub-proble…

Stochastic Boolean Satisfiability (SSAT) is a logical formalism to model decision problems with uncertainty, such as Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) for verification of probabilistic systems. SSAT, however, is limited by its descriptive power within the PSPACE complexity class. More complex problems, such as the NEXPTIME-complete Decentralized POMDP (Dec-POMDP), cannot be succinctly encoded with SSAT. To provide a logical formalism of such problems, we extend the Dependency Quantified Boolean Formula (DQBF), a representative problem in the NEXPTIME-complete class, to its s…
We consider the problem of searching for proofs in sequential presentations of logics with multiplicative (or intensional) connectives. Specifically, we start with the multiplicative fragment of linear logic and extend, on the one hand, to linear logic with its additives and, on the other, to the additives of the logic of bunched implications, BI. We give an algebraic method for calculating the distribution of the side-formulae in multiplicative rules which allows the occurrence or non-occurrence of a formula on a branch of a proof to be determined once sufficient information is available. Eac…
Prolog is a well known declarative programming language based on propositional Horn formulas. It is useful in various areas, including artificial intelligence, automated theorem proving, mathematical logic and so on. An active research area for many years is to extend Prolog to larger classes of logic. Some important extensions of it includes the constraint logic programming, and the object oriented logic programming. However, it cannot solve problems having arbitrary quantified Horn formulas. To be precise, the facts, rules and queries in Prolog are not allowed to have arbitrary quantified va…
We present positive coalgebraic logic in full generality, and show how to obtain a positive coalgebraic logic from a boolean one. On the model side this involves canonically computing an endofunctor $T': Pos\to Pos$ from an endofunctor $T: Set\to Set$, in a procedure previously defined by the second author et alii called posetification. On the syntax side, it involves canonically computing a syntax-building functor $L': DL\to DL$ from a syntax-building functor $L: BA\to BA$, in a dual procedure which we call positivication. These operations are interesting in their own right and we explicitly …
Fuzzy logic is a way to argue with boolean predicates for which we only have a confidence value between 0 and 1 rather than a well defined truth value. It is tempting to interpret such a confidence as a probability. We use Markov kernels, parametrised probability distributions, to do just that. As a consequence we get general fuzzy logic connectives from probabilistic computations on products of the booleans, stressing the importance of joint confidence functions. We discuss binary logic connectives in detail and recover the "classic" fuzzy connectives as bounds for the confidence for general …
This article fits in the area of research that investigates the application of topological duality methods to problems that appear in theoretical computer science. One of the eventual goals of this approach is to derive results in computational complexity theory by studying appropriate topological objects which characterize them. The link which relates these two seemingly separated fields is logic, more precisely a subdomain of finite model theory known as logic on words. It allows for a description of complexity classes as certain families of languages, possibly non-regular, on a finite alpha…
Boolean function bi-decomposition is ubiquitous in logic synthesis. It entails the decomposition of a Boolean function using two-input simple logic gates. Existing solutions for bi-decomposition are often based on BDDs and, more recently, on Boolean Satisfiability. In addition, the partition of the input set of variables is either assumed, or heuristic solutions are considered for finding good partitions. In contrast to earlier work, this paper proposes the use of Quantified Boolean Formulas (QBF) for computing bi- decompositions. These bi-decompositions are optimal in terms of the achieved di…
Contextuality is a key signature of quantum non-classicality, which has been shown to play a central role in enabling quantum advantage for a wide range of information-processing and computational tasks. We study the logic of contextuality from a structural point of view, in the setting of partial Boolean algebras introduced by Kochen and Specker in their seminal work. These contrast with traditional quantum logic à la Birkhoff and von Neumann in that operations such as conjunction and disjunction are partial, only being defined in the domain where they are physically meaningful. We study how …
Probabilistic logic programs are logic programs in which some of the facts are annotated with probabilities. This paper investigates how classical inference and learning tasks known from the graphical model community can be tackled for probabilistic logic programs. Several such tasks such as computing the marginals given evidence and learning from (partial) interpretations have not really been addressed for probabilistic logic programs before. The first contribution of this paper is a suite of efficient algorithms for various inference tasks. It is based on a conversion of the program and the …
The standard reasoning problem, concept satisfiability, in the basic description logic ALC is PSPACE-complete, and it is EXPTIME-complete in the presence of unrestricted axioms. Several fragments of ALC, notably logics in the FL, EL, and DL-Lite family, have an easier satisfiability problem; sometimes it is even tractable. All these fragments restrict the use of Boolean operators in one way or another. We look at systematic and more general restrictions of the Boolean operators and establish the complexity of the concept satisfiability problem in the presence of axioms. We separate tractable f…
We propose a version of WalkSAT algorithm, named as BetaWalkSAT. This method uses probabilistic reasoning for biasing the starting state of the local search algorithm. Beta distribution is used to model the belief over boolean values of the literals. Our results suggest that, the proposed BetaWalkSAT algorithm can outperform other uninformed local search approaches for complex boolean satisfiability problems.
We study quantified propositional logics from the complexity theoretic point of view. First we introduce alternating dependency quantified boolean formulae (ADQBF) which generalize both quantified and dependency quantified boolean formulae. We show that the truth evaluation for ADQBF is AEXPTIME(poly)-complete. We also identify fragments for which the problem is complete for the levels of the exponential hierarchy. Second we study propositional team-based logics. We show that DQBF formulae correspond naturally to quantified propositional dependence logic and present a general NEXPTIME upper bo…
We introduce the branching transitive closure operator on weighted monadic second-order logic formulas where the branching corresponds in a natural way to the branching inherent in trees. For arbitrary commutative semirings, we prove that weighted monadic second order logics on trees is equivalent to the definability by formulas which start with one of the following operators: (i) a branching transitive closure or (ii) an existential second-order quantifier followed by one universal first-order quantifier; in both cases the operator is applied to step-formulas over (a) Boolean first-order logi…
This paper shows that a classic metalogical framework, including all Boolean operators, can be used to support the development of a metric behavioural theory for Markov processes. Previously, only intuitionistic frameworks or frameworks without negation and logical implication have been developed to fulfill this task. The focus of this paper is on continuous Markovian logic (CML), a logic that characterizes stochastic bisimulation of Markov processes with an arbitrary measurable state space and continuous-time transitions. For a parameter epsilon>0 interpreted as observational error, we introd…
The logic of equality with uninterpreted functions (EUF) provides a means of abstracting the manipulation of data by a processor when verifying the correctness of its control logic. By reducing formulas in this logic to propositional formulas, we can apply Boolean methods such as Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) and Boolean satisfiability checkers to perform the verification. We can exploit characteristics of the formulas describing the verification conditions to greatly simplify the propositional formulas generated. In particular, we exploit the property that many equations appear only…
We study properties of relational structures such as graphs that are decided by families of Boolean circuits. Circuits that decide such properties are necessarily invariant to permutations of the elements of the input structures. We focus on families of circuits that are symmetric, i.e., circuits whose invariance is witnessed by automorphisms of the circuit induced by the permutation of the input structure. We show that the expressive power of such families is closely tied to definability in logic. In particular, we show that the queries defined on structures by uniform families of symmetric B…
