Building rooftop data are of importance in several urban applications and in natural disaster management. In contrast to traditional surveying and mapping, by using high spatial resolution aerial images, deep learning-based building rooftops extraction methods are efficient and accurate. Although more training data is preferred in deep learning-based tasks, the effect of data volume on building extraction models is underexplored. Therefore, the paper explores the impact of data volume on the performance of building rooftop extraction from very-high-spatial-resolution (VHSR) images using deep l…

Estimating solar rooftop potential at a national level is a fundamental building block for every country to utilize solar power efficiently. Solar rooftop potential assessment relies on several features such as building geometry, location, and surrounding facilities. Hence, national-level approximations that do not take these factors into deep consideration are often inaccurate. This paper introduces Lebanon's first comprehensive footprint and solar rooftop potential maps using deep learning-based instance segmentation to extract buildings' footprints from satellite images. A photovoltaic pane…
The tilted viewing nature of the off-nadir aerial images brings severe challenges to the building change detection (BCD) problem: the mismatch of the nearby buildings and the semantic ambiguity of the building facades. To tackle these challenges, we present a multi-task guided change detection network model, named as MTGCD-Net. The proposed model approaches the specific BCD problem by designing three auxiliary tasks, including: (1) a pixel-wise classification task to predict the roofs and facades of buildings; (2) an auxiliary task for learning the roof-to-footprint offsets of each building to…
We present a novel pipeline for learning the conditional distribution of a building roof mesh given pixels from an aerial image, under the assumption that roof geometry follows a set of regular patterns. Unlike alternative methods that require multiple images of the same object, our approach enables estimating 3D roof meshes using only a single image for predictions. The approach employs the PolyGen, a deep generative transformer architecture for 3D meshes. We apply this model in a new domain and investigate the sensitivity of the image resolution. We propose a novel metric to evaluate the per…
For object detection in wide-area aerial imagery, post-processing is usually needed to reduce false detections. We propose a two-stage post-processing scheme which comprises an area-thresholding sieving process and a morphological closing operation. We use two wide-area aerial videos to compare the performance of five object detection algorithms in the absence and in the presence of our post-processing scheme. The automatic detection results are compared with the ground-truth objects. Several metrics are used for performance comparison.

Extracting building footprints from aerial images is essential for precise urban mapping with photogrammetric computer vision technologies. Existing approaches mainly assume that the roof and footprint of a building are well overlapped, which may not hold in off-nadir aerial images as there is often a big offset between them. In this paper, we propose an offset vector learning scheme, which turns the building footprint extraction problem in off-nadir images into an instance-level joint prediction problem of the building roof and its corresponding "roof to footprint" offset vector. Thus the foo…

We propose a machine learning based approach for automatic 3D building reconstruction and vectorization. Taking a single-channel photogrammetric digital surface model (DSM) and panchromatic (PAN) image as input, we first filter out non-building objects and refine the building shapes of input DSM with a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN). The refined DSM and the input PAN image are then used through a semantic segmentation network to detect edges and corners of building roofs. Later, a set of vectorization algorithms are proposed to build roof polygons. Finally, the height inform…

In recent years, several real-time or near real-time object detectors have been developed. However these object detectors are typically designed for first-person view images where the subject is large in the image and do not directly apply well to detecting vehicles in aerial imagery. Though some detectors have been developed for aerial imagery, these are either slow or do not handle multi-scale imagery very well. Here the popular YOLOv2 detector is modified to vastly improve it's performance on aerial data. The modified detector is compared to Faster RCNN on several aerial imagery datasets. T…
This paper proposes a novel domain adaptation algorithm to handle the challenges posed by the satellite and aerial imagery, and demonstrates its effectiveness on the built-up region segmentation problem. Built-up area estimation is an important component in understanding the human impact on the environment, the effect of public policy, and general urban population analysis. The diverse nature of aerial and satellite imagery and lack of labeled data covering this diversity makes machine learning algorithms difficult to generalize for such tasks, especially across multiple domains. On the other …
Automatic building extraction from aerial imagery has several applications in urban planning, disaster management, and change detection. In recent years, several works have adopted deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for building extraction, since they produce rich features that are invariant against lighting conditions, shadows, etc. Although several advances have been made, building extraction from aerial imagery still presents multiple challenges. Most of the deep learning segmentation methods optimize the per-pixel loss with respect to the ground truth without knowledge of the contex…

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have become essential for processing the vast amounts of aerial imagery collected using earth-observing satellite platforms. However, DNNs are vulnerable towards adversarial examples, and it is expected that this weakness also plagues DNNs for aerial imagery. In this work, we demonstrate one of the first efforts on physical adversarial attacks on aerial imagery, whereby adversarial patches were optimised, fabricated and installed on or near target objects (cars) to significantly reduce the efficacy of an object detector applied on overhead images. Physical adversari…
We introduce a novel strategy for learning to extract semantically meaningful features from aerial imagery. Instead of manually labeling the aerial imagery, we propose to predict (noisy) semantic features automatically extracted from co-located ground imagery. Our network architecture takes an aerial image as input, extracts features using a convolutional neural network, and then applies an adaptive transformation to map these features into the ground-level perspective. We use an end-to-end learning approach to minimize the difference between the semantic segmentation extracted directly from t…

Aerial images provide important situational awareness for responding to natural disasters such as hurricanes. They are well-suited for providing information for damage estimation and localization (DEL); i.e., characterizing the type and spatial extent of damage following a disaster. Despite recent advances in sensing and unmanned aerial systems technology, much of post-disaster aerial imagery is still taken by handheld DSLR cameras from small, manned, fixed-wing aircraft. However, these handheld cameras lack IMU information, and images are taken opportunistically post-event by operators. As su…

Multi-pedestrian tracking in aerial imagery has several applications such as large-scale event monitoring, disaster management, search-and-rescue missions, and as input into predictive crowd dynamic models. Due to the challenges such as the large number and the tiny size of the pedestrians (e.g., 4 x 4 pixels) with their similar appearances as well as different scales and atmospheric conditions of the images with their extremely low frame rates (e.g., 2 fps), current state-of-the-art algorithms including the deep learning-based ones are unable to perform well. In this paper, we propose AerialM…

Nevertheless, the analysis of this data using neural network architectures lags behind the current state-of-the-art on popular datasets such as PASCAL VOC, CityScapes and Camvid. In this paper we bridge the performance-gap between these popular datasets and aerial imagery data. Little work is done on aerial imagery with state-of-the-art neural network architectures in a multi-class setting. Our experiments concerning data augmentation, normalisation, image size and loss functions give insight into a high performance setup for aer…

Forest carbon offsets are increasingly popular and can play a significant role in financing climate mitigation, forest conservation, and reforestation. Measuring how much carbon is stored in forests is, however, still largely done via expensive, time-consuming, and sometimes unaccountable field measurements. To overcome these limitations, many verification bodies are leveraging machine learning (ML) algorithms to estimate forest carbon from satellite or aerial imagery. Aerial imagery allows for tree species or family classification, which improves the satellite imagery-based forest type classi…
Detection and classification of objects in aerial imagery have several applications like urban planning, crop surveillance, and traffic surveillance. However, due to the lower resolution of the objects and the effect of noise in aerial images, extracting distinguishing features for the objects is a challenge. The task of roof damage classification and segmentation from overhead imagery presents unique challenges. In this work we choose to address the challenge posed due to strong class imbalance. We propose four distinct techniques that aim at mitigating this problem. Through a new scheme that feeds the data to the network by oversampling the minority classes, and three other network architectural improvements, we manage to boost the macro-averaged F1-score of a model by 39.9 percentage points, thus achieving improved segmentation performance, especially on the minority classes.
Deep learning is revolutionizing the mapping industry. Under lightweight human curation, computer has generated almost half of the roads in Thailand on OpenStreetMap (OSM) using high-resolution aerial imagery. Bing maps are displaying 125 million computer-generated building polygons in the U.S. While tremendously more efficient than manual mapping, one cannot map out everything from the air. Especially for roads, a small prediction gap by image occlusion renders the entire road useless for routing. Misconnections can be more dangerous. Therefore computer-based mapping often requires local veri…

The knowledge about the placement and appearance of lane markings is a prerequisite for the creation of maps with high precision, necessary for autonomous driving, infrastructure monitoring, lane-wise traffic management, and urban planning. Lane markings are one of the important components of such maps. Lane markings convey the rules of roads to drivers. While these rules are learned by humans, an autonomous driving vehicle should be taught to learn them to localize itself. Therefore, accurate and reliable lane marking semantic segmentation in the imagery of roads and highways is needed to ach…

This paper presents a localization technique using aerial imagery maps and LIDAR based ground reflectivity for autonomous vehicles in urban environments. Traditional localization techniques using LIDAR reflectivity rely on high definition reflectivity maps generated from a mapping vehicle. The cost and effort required to maintain such prior maps are generally very high because it requires a fleet of expensive mapping vehicles. In this work we propose a localization technique where the vehicle localizes using aerial/satellite imagery, eradicating the need to develop and maintain complex high-de…

Analysis of overhead imagery using computer vision is a problem that has received considerable attention in academic literature. Most techniques that operate in this space are both highly specialised and require expensive manual annotation of large datasets. These problems are addressed here through the development of a more generic framework, incorporating advances in representation learning which allows for more flexibility in analysing new categories of imagery with limited labeled data. First, a robust representation of an unlabeled aerial imagery dataset was created based on the momentum …
