We study the volume prescription of the holographic subregion complexity in a holographic 5 dimensional model consisting of Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field with a non-trivial potential. The dual 4 dimensional gauge theory is not conformal and exhibits a RG flow between two different fixed points. In both zero and finite temperature we show that the holographic subregion complexity can be used as a measure of non-conformality of the model. This quantity exhibits also a monotonic behaviour in terms of the size of the entangling region, like the behaviour of the entanglement entropy in this setup. There is also a finite jump due to the disentangling transition between connected and disconnected minimal surfaces for holographic renormalized subregion complexity at zero temperature.
We study holographically the zero and finite temperature behavior of the potential energy and holographic subregion complexity corresponding to a probe meson in a non-conformal model. We observe that in zero and low temperature non-conformality has a decreasing effect on the dimensionless meson potential energy. However, non-conformal corrections increase absolute value of the dimensionless holographic subregion complexity in both zero and finite temperature which means the non-conformal state needs less information to be specified. In other words, considering the effect of non-conformality, t…
Using holographic subregion complexity, we study the confinement-deconfinement phase transition of quantum chromodynamics. In the model we consider here, we observe a connection between the potential energy of probe meson and the behavior of its complexity. Moreover, near the critical point, at which the phase transition takes place, our numerical calculations indicate that we need less information to specify a meson in the non-conformal vacuum than in the conformal one, despite the fact that the non-conformal vacuum has larger energy!
We study holographic subregion volume complexity for a line segment in the AdS$_3$ Vaidya geometry. On the field theory side, this gravity background corresponds to a sudden quench which leads to the thermalization of the strongly-coupled dual conformal field theory. We find the time-dependent extremal volume surface by numerically solving a partial differential equation with boundary condition given by the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surface, and we use this solution to compute holographic subregion complexity as a function of time. Approximate analytical expressions valid at early and at lat…
The volume of the region inside the bulk Ryu-Takayanagi surface is a codimension-one object, and a natural generalization of holographic complexity to the case of subregions in the boundary QFT. We focus on time-independent geometries, and study the properties of this volume in various circumstances. We derive a formula for computing the volume for a strip entangling surface and a general asymptotically AdS bulk geometry. For an AdS black hole geometry, the volume exhibits non-monotonic behaviour as a function of the size of the entangling region (unlike the behaviour of the entanglement entro…
In the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, imposing a scalar field in the bulk space-time leads to deform the corresponding CFT in the boundary, which may produce corrections to entanglement entropy, as well as the so-called subregion complexity. We have computed such corrections for a set of singular subregions including kink, cones and creases in different dimensions. Our calculations shows new singular terms including universal logarithmic corrections for entanglement entropy and subregion complexity for some distinct values of conformal weight.
We construct renormalized holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and subregion complexity (HSC) in the CV conjecture for asymptotically AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$ geometries under relevant perturbations. Using the holographic renormalization method developed in the gauge/gravity duality, we obtain counter terms which are invariant under coordinate choices. We explicitly define different forms of renormalized HEE and HSC, according to conformal dimensions of relevant operators in the $d=3$ and $d=4$ dual field theories. We use a general embedding for arbitrary entangling subregions and showed that any…
We consider the computation of volumes contained in a spatial slice of AdS$_3$ in terms of observables in a dual CFT. Our main tool is kinematic space, defined either from the bulk perspective as the space of oriented bulk geodesics, or from the CFT perspective as the space of entangling intervals. We give an explicit formula for the volume of a general region in the spatial slice as an integral over kinematic space. For the region lying below a geodesic, we show how to write this volume purely in terms of entangling entropies in the dual CFT. This expression is perhaps most interesting in lig…
The back reaction imparted by a uniform distribution of heavy static fundamental quarks on large $N_c$ strongly coupled gauge theory can be holographically realized as a deformation in $AdS$ blackhole background. The presence of back reaction brings significant changes in to the entanglement structure of the strongly coupled boundary theory at finite temperature. Since the deformed blackhole geometry still remains asymptotically $AdS$, the $gauge/gravity$ duality allows us to explore the entanglement structure of back reacted plasma in a quantitative way by computing various measures, e.g holo…
We study various entanglement measures associated with certain non-conformal field theories. We consider non-conformal D$p$-brane backgrounds, which are dual to these field theories, for our holographic analysis. Restricting our interests in $p=1,2,4$, we explicitly compute properties of holographic entanglement entropy and entanglement wedge cross section, $\text{E}_{W}$, corresponding to two parallel strip shaped boundary subregions in these set ups. We study low and high temperature behaviours of these quantities analytically as well as using numerical methods. In all cases, the $\text{E}_{…
In the past, the study of the divergence structure of the holographic entanglement entropy on singular boundary regions uncovered cut-off independent coefficients. These coefficients were shown to be universal and to encode important field theory data. Inspired by these lessons we study the UV divergences of subregion complexity-action (CA) in a region with corner (kink). We develop a systematic approach to study all the divergence structures, and we emphasize that the counter term that restores reparameterization invariance on the null boundaries plays a crucial role in simplifying the result…
The volume inside a Ryu-Takayanagi surface has been conjectured to be related to the complexity of subregions of the boundary field theory. Here, we study the behaviour of this volume analytically, when the entangling surface has a strip geometry. We perform systematic expansions in the low and high temperature regimes for AdS-Schwarzschild and RN-AdS black holes. In the latter regime, we point out spurious divergences that might occur due to the limitations of a near horizon expansion. A similar analysis is performed for extremal black holes, and at large charge, we find that there might be s…
We investigate subregion holographic complexity in the context of renormalization group flow geometries. We use both the Poincaŕe slicing and the Janus ansatz as holographic duals to renormalization group flows in the boundary conformal field theory. In the former metric, subregion complexity is computed for a disc and a strip shaped entangling region. For the disc shaped region, consistent emergence of length scales for flow to the deep infra-red is established. For strip shaped regions, we find that complexity cannot locate holographic phase transitions in a sharp domain wall scenario. For s…
We check formally that the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi prescription for holographic entanglement entropy -- when applied to a static black brane spacetime and to a wide class of subregions that do not lie on a constant time slice -- gives rise to volume-law entropy in the limit of large subregion. By volume-law entropy, we mean that the entanglement entropy scales with the volume of the projection of the boundary subregion onto a static time slice with respect to the boundary thermal state (with the same coefficient as in the volume law on the static time slice). Our result applies to subregio…
We study the evolution of holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench in this paper. From the subregion CV proposal in the AdS/CFT correspondence, the subregion complexity in the CFT is holographically captured by the volume of the codimension-one surface enclosed by the codimension-two extremal entanglement surface and the boundary subregion. Under a thermal quench, the dual gravitational configuration is described by a Vaidya-AdS spacetime. In this case we find that the holographic subregion complexity always increases at early time, and after reaching a maximum it decreases and …
We investigate general features of the evolution of holographic subregion complexity (HSC) on Vaidya-AdS metric with a general form. The spacetime is dual to a sudden quench process in quantum system and HSC is a measure of the ``difference'' between two mixed states. Based on the subregion CV (Complexity equals Volume) conjecture and in the large size limit, we extract out three distinct stages during the evolution of HSC: the stage of linear growth at the early time, the stage of linear growth with a slightly small rate during the intermediate time and the stage of linear decrease at the lat…
We study the portion of an asymptotically Anti de Sitter geometry's bulk where the metric can be reconstructed, given the areas of minimal 2-surfaces anchored to a fixed boundary subregion. We exhibit situations in which this region can reach parametrically far outside of the entanglement wedge. If the setting is furthermore holographic, so that the bulk geometry is dual to a state in a conformal field theory (CFT), these minimal 2-surface areas can be deduced from the expectation values of operators localized within the boundary subregion. This presents us with an alternative: Either the redu…
We study shape-deformations of the entanglement entropy and the modular Hamiltonian for an arbitrary subregion and state (with a smooth dual geometry) in a holographic conformal field theory. More precisely, we study a double-deformation comprising of a shape deformation together with a state deformation, where the latter corresponds to a small change in the bulk geometry. Using a purely gravitational identity from the Hollands-Iyer-Wald formalism together with the assumption of equality between bulk and boundary modular flows for the original, undeformed state and subregion, we rewrite a pure…
The BPS D3 brane has a non-supersymmetric cousin, called the non-susy D3 brane, which is also a solution of type IIB string theory. The corresponding counterpart of black D3 brane is the `black' non-susy D3 brane and like the BPS D3 brane, it also has a decoupling limit, where the decoupled geometry (in the case we are interested, this is asymptotically AdS$_5$ $\times$ S$^5$) is the holographic dual of a non-conformal, non-supersymmetric QFT in $(3+1)$-dimensions. In this QFT we compute the entanglement entropy (EE), the complexity and the Fisher information metric holographically using the a…
We derive dynamics of the entanglement wedge cross section directly from the two-dimensional holographic CFTs with a local operator quench. This derivation is based on the reflected entropy, a correlation measure for mixed states. We further compare these results with the mutual information and ones for RCFTs. Our results directly suggest the classical correlation also plays an important role in the subregion/subregion duality even for dynamical setup. Besides a local operator quench, we study the reflected entropy in a heavy state and provide improved bulk interpretation. We checked the above…
We compute the holographic entanglement entropy and subregion complexity of spherical boundary subregions in the uncharged and charged AdS black hole backgrounds, with the \textbf{change} in these quantities being defined with respect to the pure AdS result. This calculation is done perturbatively in the parameter $\frac{R}{z_{\rm h}}$, where $z_{\rm h}$ is the black hole horizon and $R$ is the radius of the entangling region. We provide analytic formulae for these quantities as functions of the boundary spacetime dimension $d$ including several orders higher than previously computed. We obser…
We investigate the evolution of holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and holographic complexity (HC) under a thermal quench in Einstein-Maxwell-Axion theory (EMA), which is dual to a field theory with momentum relaxation on the boundary. A strip-shaped boundary geometry is utilized to calculate HEE and HC via `entropy=surface' and `complexity=volume' conjecture, respectively. By fixing other parameters we claim that either large enough black hole charge or width of the strip will introduce swallow-tail behaviors in HEE and multi-values in HC due to the discontinuity of the minimum Hubeny-Ran…
We study holographic subregion complexity, and its possible connection to purification complexity suggested recently by Agón et al. In particular, we study the conjecture that subregion complexity is the purification complexity by considering holographic purifications of a holographic mixed state. We argue that these include states with any amount of coarse-graining consistent with being a purification of the mixed state in question, corresponding holographically to different choices of the cutoff surface. We find that within the complexity = volume and complexity = spacetime volume conjecture…
We compute holographic complexity for the non-supersymmetric Janus deformation of AdS$_5$ according to the volume conjecture. The result is characterized by a power-law ultraviolet divergence. When a ball-shaped region located around the interface is considered, a sub-leading logarithmic divergent term and a finite part appear in the corresponding subregion volume complexity. Using two different prescriptions to regularize the divergences, we find that the coefficient of the logarithmic term is universal.
We compute the ultraviolet divergences of holographic subregion complexity for the left and right factors of the thermofield double state in warped AdS$_3$ black holes, both for the action and the volume conjectures. Besides the linear divergences, which are also present in the BTZ black hole, additional logarithmic divergences appear. For the action conjecture, these log divergences are not affected by the arbitrarity in the length scale associated with the counterterm needed to ensure reparameterization invariance. We find that the subregion action complexity obeys the superadditivity proper…
The effects of a boundary on the circuit complexity are studied in two dimensional theories. The analysis is performed in the holographic realization of a conformal field theory with a boundary by employing different proposals for the dual of the complexity, including the "Complexity = Volume" (CV) and "Complexity = Action" (CA) prescriptions, and in the harmonic chain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In all the cases considered except for CA, the boundary introduces a subleading logarithmic divergence in the expansion of the complexity as the UV cutoff vanishes. Holographic subregion compl…
Quantifying entanglement properties of mixed states in quantum field theory via entanglement of purification and reflected entropy is a new and challenging subject. In this work, we study both quantities for two spherical subregions far away from each other in the vacuum of a conformal field theory in any number of dimensions. Using lattice techniques, we find an elementary proof that the decay of both, the entanglement of purification and reflected entropy, is enhanced with respect to the mutual information behaviour by a logarithm of the distance between the subregions. In the case of the Is…
Using the volume of the space enclosed by the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface, we study the complexity of the disk-shape subregion (with radius R) in various (2+1)-dimensional gapped systems with gravity dual. These systems include a class of toy models with singular IR and the bottom-up models for quantum chromodynamics and fractional quantum Hall effects. Two main results are: i) in the large-R expansion of the complexity, the R-linear term is always absent, similar to the absence of topological entanglement entropy; ii) when the entanglement entropy exhibits the classic `swallowtail' phase tran…
Motivated by the holographic prescriptions for computing entanglement entropy and complexity, we study the properties of volumes/areas of bulk surfaces. We obtain a simple formula for the shape dependence of holographic entanglement entropy in terms of a certain integral over the entangling surface. This easily generalizes to any bulk codimension-$p$ extremal surface. We study additional properties of bulk codimension-$p$ extremal surfaces corresponding to strip/plane "entangling surfaces" in various geometries. We compute universal terms for codim-one volumes (conjectured to be dual to hologr…
We compute the holographic subregion complexity of a radiation subsystem in a geometric secret-sharing model of Hawking radiation in the "complexity = volume" proposal. The model is constructed using multiboundary wormhole geometries in AdS$_{3}$. The entanglement curve for secret-sharing captures a crossover between two minimal curves in the geometry apart from the usual eternal Page curve present for the complete radiation entanglement. We compute the complexity dual to the secret-sharing minimal surfaces and study their "time" evolution. When we have access to a small part of the radiation,…
We consider subregion complexity within the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence. We rewrite the volume proposal, according to which the complexity of a reduced density matrix is given by the spacetime volume contained inside the associated Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface, in terms of an integral over the curvature. Using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem we evaluate this quantity for general entangling regions and temperature. In particular, we find that the discontinuity that occurs under a change in the RT surface is given by a fixed topological contribution, independent of the temperature or details of the entangl…
We investigate a version of fixed scalars for non-dilatonic branes which correspond to dilatations of the brane world-volume. We obtain a cross-section whose world-volume interpretation falls out naturally from an investigation of the breaking of conformal invariance by the irrelevant Born-Infeld corrections to Yang-Mills theory. From the same irrelevant world-volume operator we obtain the leading correction to the cross-sections of minimal scalars. This correction can be obtained in supergravity via an improved matching of inner and outer solutions to the minimal wave equation.
We argue that the entanglement of purification for two dimensional holographic CFT can be obtained from conformal blocks with internal twist operators. First, we explain our formula from the view point of tensor network model of holography. Then, we apply it to bipartite mixed states dual to subregion of AdS${}_3$ and the static BTZ blackhole geometries. The formula in CFT agrees with the entanglement wedge cross section in the bulk, which has been recently conjectured to be equivalent to the entanglement of purification.
We show how the anti-de Sitter isometries of a brane solution of supergravity theory produce superconformal invariance of their world-volume action. In this way linear as well as non-linear superconformal actions are obtained in various dimensions. Two particular examples are a conformal action with the antisymmetric tensor in 6 dimensions in Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin formulation, and superconformal mechanics.
The finite-volume spectrum of an integrable massive perturbation of a rational conformal field theory interpolates between massive multi-particle states in infinite volume (IR limit) and conformal states, which are approached at zero volume (UV limit). Each state is labeled in the IR by a set of `Bethe Ansatz quantum numbers', while in the UV limit it is characterized primarily by the conformal dimensions of the conformal field creating it. We present explicit conjectures for the UV conformal dimensions corresponding to any IR state in the $ϕ_{1,3}$-perturbed minimal models $M(2,5)$ and $M(3,5…
We compute the Zamolodchikov volumes of some moduli spaces of conformal field theories with target spaces K3, T4, and their symmetric products. As an application we argue that sequences of conformal field theories, built from products of such symmetric products, almost never have a holographic dual with weakly coupled gravity.
The S-matrix of a theory often exhibits symmetries which are not manifest from the viewpoint of its Lagrangian. For instance, powerful constraints on scattering amplitudes are imposed by the dual conformal symmetry of planar 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and the ABJM theory. Motivated by this, we investigate the consequences of dual conformal symmetry in six dimensions, which may provide useful insight into the worldvolume theory of M5-branes (if it enjoys such a symmetry). We find that 6d dual conformal symmetry uniquely fixes the integrand of the one-loop 4-point amplitude, and …
This article describes some geometric invariants and conformal anomalies for conformally compact Einstein manifolds and their minimal submanifolds which have recently been discovered via the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence.

Complexity in quantum physics measures how difficult a state can be reached from a reference state and more precisely it is the number of fundamental unitary gates we have to operate to transform the reference state to the state we are considering. In the holographic context, based on several explicit calculations and arguments, it is conjectured that certain bulk volume calculates the boundary field theory subregion complexity. In this paper, we will show that the $T\bar{T}$ deformation shows a strong signal of the correctness of this complexity equals volume conjecture. A bonus is a way to l…
Recently, remarkable progress in recovering the Page curve of an evaporating black hole (BH) in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity has been achieved through use of Quantum Extremal surfaces (QES). Multi-boundary Wormhole (MbW) models have been crucial in parallel model building in three dimensions. Motivated by this we here use the latter models to compute the subregion complexity of the Hawking quanta of the evaporating BH in AdS$_{3}$ and obtain the Page curve associated with this information theoretic measure. We use three- and $n$-boundary wormhole constructions to elucidate our computations of vol…
We propose that the fracton models with subsystem symmetry can be a class of toy models for the holographic principle. The discovery of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence as a concrete construction of holography and the subsequent developments including the subregion duality and Ryu-Takayanagi formula of entanglement entropy have revolutionized our understanding of quantum gravity and provided powerful tool sets for solving various strongly-coupled quantum field theory problems. To resolve many mysteries of holography, toy models can be very helpful. One example is the ho…
Regulated Lorentz invariant quantum field theories satisfy an area law for the entanglement entropy $S$ of a spatial subregion in the ground state in $d>1$ spatial dimensions; nevertheless, the full density matrix contains many more than $e^{S}$ non-zero eigenvalues. We ask how well the state of a subregion $R$ in the ground state of such a theory can be approximated when keeping only the $e^{S}$ largest eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix of $R$. We argue that by taking the region $R$ big enough, we can always ensure that keeping roughly $e^{S}$ states leads to bounded error in trace no…
We study two recent conjectures for holographic complexity: the complexity=action conjecture and the complexity=volume conjecture. In particular, we examine the structure of the UV divergences appearing in these quantities, and show that the coefficients can be written as local integrals of geometric quantities in the boundary. We also consider extending these conjectures to evaluate the complexity of the mixed state produced by reducing the pure global state to a specific subregion of the boundary time slice. The UV divergences in this subregion complexity have a similar geometric structure, …
We describe the volume dependence of matrix elements of local fields to all orders in inverse powers of the volume (i.e. only neglecting contributions that decay exponentially with volume). Using the scaling Lee-Yang model and the Ising model in a magnetic field as testing ground, we compare them to matrix elements extracted in finite volume using truncated conformal space approach to exact form factors obtained using the bootstrap method. We obtain solid confirmation for the form factor bootstrap, which is different from all previously available tests in that it is a non-perturbative and dire…
We present a new framework for studying conformal field theories deformed by one or more relevant operators. The original CFT is described in infinite volume using a basis of states with definite momentum, $P$, and conformal Casimir, $\mathcal{C}$. The relevant deformation is then considered using lightcone quantization, with the resulting Hamiltonian expressed in terms of this CFT basis. Truncating to states with $\mathcal{C} \leq \mathcal{C}_{\max}$, one can numerically find the resulting spectrum, as well as other dynamical quantities, such as spectral densities of operators. This method re…
Holographic entanglement entropy and the first law of thermodynamics are believed to decode the gravity theory in the bulk. In particular, assuming the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT)\cite{ryu-takayanagi} formula holds for ball-shaped regions on the boundary around CFT vacuum states implies\cite{Nonlinear-Faulkner} a bulk gravity theory equivalent to Einstein gravity through second-order perturbations. In this paper, we show that the same assumptions can also give rise to second-order Lovelock gravity. Specifically, we generalize the procedure in \cite{Nonlinear-Faulkner} to show that the arguments there …
In this work we investigate the thermodynamic properties of conformal gravity in four dimensions. We compute the \emph{area(or entropy) functional} relation for this black hole. We consider both de-Sitter (dS) and anti de-Sitter (AdS) cases. We derive the \emph{Cosmic-Censorship-Inequality} which is an important relation in general relativity that relates the total mass of a spacetime to the area of all the black hole horizons. Local thermodynamic stability is studied by computing the specific heat. The second order phase transition occurs at a certain condition. Various type of second order p…
