To date, various optimization algorithms have been employed to design and improve the performance of nanophotonic structures. Here, we propose to utilize a machine-learning algorithm viz. binary-Additive Reinforcement Learning Algorithm (b-ARLA) coupled with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations to design ultra-compact and efficient on-chip integrated nanophotonic 50:50 beam splitters (T-junctions). Here we present the design of two T-junction splitters each with a footprint of only 1.2 $μ$m x 1.2 $μ$m. To the best of our knowledge, these designs are amongst the smallest ever reported till date across either simulations or experiments. The simulated net power transmission efficiency for the first T-junction design is ~ 82% and the second design is ~ 80% $at 4λ= 1.55 μ$m. We envision that the design methodology, as reported herein, would be useful in general for designing any efficient integrated-photonic device for optical communications systems.
We present the design, fabrication and characterization of high quality factor silicon nitride nanobeam PhC cavities at visible wavelengths for coupling to diamond color centers in a cavity QED system. We demonstrate devices with a quality factor of about 24;000 around the zero-phonon line of the germanium-vacancy center in diamond. We also present an efficient fiber-to-waveguide coupling platform for suspended nanophotonics. By gently changing the corresponding effective indices at the fiber-waveguide interface, we achieve an efficiency of about 96% at the cavity resonance.

We demonstrate fully crystalline, single-mode ultrahigh quality factor integrated microresonators comprising epitaxially grown Si$_{0.86}$Ge$_{0.14}$ waveguide cores with silicon claddings. These waveguides support resonances with internal $Q >10^8$ for both polarization modes, a nearly order-of-magnitude improvement over that seen in prior integrated Si photonics platforms. The maximum $Q$ is $1.71\pm0.06 \times 10^8$ for the transverse magnetic (TM) polarization mode, corresponding to a loss of $0.39\pm0.02$ dB/m. Together with silicon's strong Kerr nonlinearity and low losses in the optical…
Aluminum nitride (AlN) is an emerging material for integrated quantum photonics due to its large $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. Here we demonstrate the hybrid integration of AlN on silicon nitride (SiN) photonic chips. Composite microrings are fabricated by reactive DC sputtering of c-axis oriented AlN on top of pre-patterned SiN. This new approach does not require any patterning of AlN and depends only on reliable SiN nanofabrication. This simplifies the nanofabrication process drastically. Optical characteristics, such as the quality factor, propagation losses and group index, are obtained. Our hyb…

The modulator has an ultra-compact footprint of 1.8μm x 1μm with a 100nm x 100nm modulating section based on the orthogonal geometry. We take advantage of large change in the refractive index of vanadium dioxide during its phase transition to achieve a high modulation depth of 46.89dB/μm. We also provide a fabrication strategy for the development of this device. The device geometry has potential applications in the development of next gener…

We demonstrate an external cavity laser formed by combining a silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit with a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. The laser uses an alignment tolerant edge coupler formed by a multi-mode waveguide splitter right at the edge of the silicon nitride chip that relaxes the required alignment to the III-V gain chip and equally splits the power among its two output waveguides. Both the ground and first order mode are excited in the coupler and reach the quadrature condition at the waveguide junction, ensuring equal power to be coupled to both. Two high-quali…
Silicon quantum photonics provides a promising pathway to realize large-scale quantum photonic integrated circuits (QPICs) by exploiting the power of complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Toward scalable operation of such silicon-based QPICs, a straightforward approach is to integrate deterministic single-photon sources (SPSs). To this end, hybrid integration of deterministic solid-state SPSs, such as those based on InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs), is highly promising. However, the spectral and spatial randomness inherent in the QDs pose a serious challenge for scalable imple…
Due to the inherent in-direct bandgap nature of Silicon, heterogeneous integration of semiconductor lasers on Silicon on Insulator (SOI) is crucial for next-generation on-chip optical interconnects. Compact, high-efficient and high-tolerant couplers between III-V light source and silicon chips have been the challenge for photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Here, we redesign the taper adiabatic coupler with the total coupling length of only 4 μm, and propose another two novel slot coupler and bridge-SWG coupler with both coupling length of 7 μm, to heterogeneously integrate III-V lasers and sili…
In wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) schemes, splitters must be used to combine and separate different wavelengths. Conventional splitters are fairly large with footprints in hundreds to thousands of square microns, and experimentally-demonstrated MMI-based and inverse-designed ultra-compact splitters operate with only two channels and large channel spacing ($>$100 nm). Here we inverse design and experimentally demonstrate a three-channel wavelength demultiplexer with 40 nm spacing (1500 nm, 1540 nm, and 1580 nm) with a footprint of 24.75 $μ\mathrm{m}^2$. The splitter has a simulated peak…
Terahertz technology is largely dependent upon planar on-chip antennas that radiate downwards through the substrate, and so an effective means to interface these antennas with integrated waveguides is an attractive prospect. Our investigation employs resonant tunneling diodes as compact two-terminal electronic terahertz oscillators, and terahertz waves are observed from 270 GHz to 409 GHz. The fact that this power is accessed via a curved length …
Efficient coupling of III-V light sources to silicon photonic circuits is one of the key challenges of integrated optics. Compact fiber-to-chip couplers play an important role in optical interconnections, especially in data centers. However, the development of couplers has been mostly limited to standard single mode fibers, with few devices compatible with multicore and multimode fibers. Through the use of state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, we designed a compact dual-polarization coupler to interface chips and dense multicore fibers, demonstrating, for the first time, coupling to both polarizations of all the cores, with measured coupling efficiency of $-$4.3 dB and with a 3 dB bandwidth of 48 nm. The dual…
We experimentally demonstrate wide-band (>100 THz) frequency down-conversion of near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond-scale pulses from an Er:fiber laser to the mid-infrared (MIR) using four-wave-mixing (FWM) in photonic-chip silicon-nitride waveguides. The engineered dispersion in the nanophotonic geometry, along with the wide transparency range of silicon nitride, enables large-detuning FWM phase-matching and results in tunable MIR from 2.6-3.6 um on a single chip with 100-pJ-scale pump-pulse energies. Additionally, we observe > 20 dB broadband parametric gain for the NIR pulses when the FWM proce…
Wavelength-dependent polarization state of light carries crucial information about light-matter interactions. Traditional silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform based on-chip photonic interconnects have limited energy-bandwidth scalability due to the optical non-linearity induced power constraints of the constituent photonic devices. In this paper, we propose to break this scalability barrier using a new silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) based photonic device platform. Our physical-layer characterization results show that SOS-based photonic devices have negligible optical non-linearity effects in the mid-infrared region near 4μm, which drastically alleviates their power constraints. Our link-level analysis shows…
Scalable quantum photonic systems require efficient single photon sources coupled to integrated photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate hybrid integration of solid-state quantum emitters to a silicon photonic device. We develop a pick-and-place technique that can position epitaxially grown InAs/InP …
Photonic neural networks have significant potential for high-speed neural processing with low latency and ultralow energy consumption. Herein, we propose the concept of a photonic neural field and implement it experimentally on a silicon chip to realize highly scalable neuro-inspired computing. In contrast to existing photonic neural networks, the photonic neural field is a spatially continuous field that nonlinearly responds to optical inputs, and its high spatial degrees of …

In this work, we demonstrate the creation of a local thermal gradient on-chip by radiative cooling of a 90 nm thick freestanding…
High-speed light emitters integrated on silicon chips can enable novel architectures for silicon-based optoelectronics, such as on-chip optical interconnects and silicon photonics. Modifying light fields at single-photon level is a key challenge for upcoming quantum technologies and can be realized in a scalable manner through integrated quantum photonics. Laser-written diamond photonics offers three-dimensional fabrication capabilities and large mode-field diameters matched to fiber optic technology, though limiting the cooperativity at the single-emitter level. To realize large cooperativities, we combine excitation of single shallow-implanted silicon vacancy centers via large numerical aperture optics with detection assisted by laser-written type-II waveguides. The optical neural network (ONN) is a promising hardware platform for next-generation neurocomputing due to its high parallelism, low latency, and low energy consumption. Previous ONN architectures are mainly designed for general matrix multiplication (GEMM), leading to unnecessarily large area cost and high control complexity. Here, we move beyond classical GEMM-based ONNs and propose an optical subspace neural network (OSNN) architecture, which trades the universality of weight representation for lower optical component usage, area cost, and energy consumption. We devise a butterfly-style ph…
Frequency combs, spectra of evenly-spaced narrow phase-coherent laser lines, have revolutionized precision measurements. On-chip frequency comb generators hold much promise for fully-integrated instruments of time and frequency metrology. While outstanding developments are being reported with Kerr, quantum cascade and microring electro-optic combs, the field of high-resolution multiplexed gas-phase spectroscopy has remained inaccessible to such devices, because of their large line spacing, their small number of usable comb lines, the intensity variations between their comb lines, and their lim…
The development of advanced piezoelectric quartz MEMS for sensing and precise frequency control applications requires the nanostructuration and on chip integration on silicon of this material. Here, we combine chemical solution deposition, soft nanoimprint lithography and top down microfabrication processes to develop the first nanostructured epitaxial 100 quartz 100 Si piezoelect…
Silicon photonics is a powerful platform for implementing large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs), because of its compatibility with mature complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Metal-halide perovskites are promising lasing materials for realization of monolithically integrated laser sources, the key components of silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Perovskites can be deposited from solution and require only low temperature processing leading to significant cost reduction and enabling new PIC architectures compared to state-of-the-art lasers realized through costly and inefficient hybrid integration of III-V semiconductors. Until now however, due to the chemical sensitivity of perovskites, no microfabrication process based on optical lithography and therefore…
Solid-state quantum computers require classical electronics to control and readout individual qubits and to enable fast classical data processing [1-3].
