We study the effect of the early kinetic decoupling in a model of fermionic dark matter (DM) that interacts with the standard model particles only by exchanging the Higgs boson. There are two DM-Higgs couplings, namely CP-conserving and CP-violating couplings. If the mass of the DM is slightly below half of the Higgs boson mass, then the couplings are suppressed to obtain the measured value of the DM energy density by the freeze-out mechanism. In addition, the scattering processes of DM off particles in the thermal bath are suppressed by the small momentum transfer if the CP-violating DM-Higgs coupling is larger than the CP-conserving one. Due to the suppression, the temperature of the DM can differ from the temperature of the thermal bath. By solving coupled equations for the number density and temperature of the DM, we calculate the DM-Higgs couplings that reproduce the right amount of the DM relic abundance. We find that the couplings have to be larger than the one obtained without taking into account the difference in the temperatures. A consequence of the enhancement of the DM-Higgs couplings is the enhancement of the Higgs invisible decay branching ratio. The enhancement is testable at current and future collider experiments.
We compute the decoupling function of the MSbar renormalized fine-structure constant up to four-loop order in perturbative QCD. The results are used in order to determine the related top-quark contributions to the Higgs-boson decay into two photons in the heavy top-quark mass limit to order alpha_s^4.
We study the early kinetic decoupling effect in a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) dark matter (DM) model. The pNG DM scattering processes with particles in the thermal bath in the early Universe are suppressed by the small momentum transfer. As a result, kinetic equilibrium is not maintained, and the temperature of DM is different from the temperature of the thermal bath at the freeze-out era. This temperature difference affects the thermal relic abundance of DM. We investigate the early kinetic decoupling in the Higgs resonance region, 50 GeV $\lesssim m_χ\lesssim m_h/2$, where $m_χ$ is the mass…
We argue that the acoustic damping of the matter power spectrum is not a generic feature of the kinetic decoupling of dark matter, but even the enhancement can be realized depending on the nature of the kinetic decoupling when compared to that in the standard cold dark matter model. We consider a model that exhibits a ${\it sudden}$ kinetic decoupling and investigate cosmological perturbations in the ${\it standard}$ cosmological background numerically in the model. We also give an analytic discussion in a simplified setup. Our results indicate that the nature of the kinetic decoupling could h…
We reconsider non-thermal production of WIMP dark matter in a systematic way and using a numerical code for accurate computations of dark matter relic densities. Candidates with large pair annihilation rates are favored, suggesting a connection with the anomalies in the lepton cosmic-ray flux detected by Pamela and Fermi. Focussing on supersymmetric models we will consider the impact of non-thermal production on the preferred mass scale for dark matter neutralinos. We have also developed a new formalism to solve the Boltzmann's equation for a system of coannihilating species without assuming k…
After neutralinos cease annihilating in the early Universe, they may still scatter elastically from other particles in the primordial plasma. At some point in time, however, they will eventually stop scattering. We calculate the cross sections for neutralino elastic scattering from standard-model particles to determine the time at which this kinetic decoupling occurs. We show that kinetic decoupling occurs above a temperature $T\sim$ MeV. Thereafter, neutralinos act as collisionless cold dark matter.
In the paper we study the Breit-Wigner enhancement of dark matter (DM) annihilation considering the kinetic decoupling in the evolution of DM freeze-out at the early universe. Since the DM temperature decreases much faster (as $1/R^2$) after kinetic decoupling than that in kinetic equilibrium (as 1/R) we find the Breit-Wigner enhancement of DM annihilation rate after the kinetic decoupling will affect the DM relic density significantly. Focusing on the model parameters that trying to explain the anomalous cosmic positron/electron excesses observed by PAMELA/Fermi/ATIC we find the elastic scatt…
We study the kinetic decoupling of light (lesssim 10 GeV) magnetic dipole dark matter (DM). We find that present bounds from collider, direct DM searches, and structure formation allow magnetic dipole DM to remain in thermal equilibrium with the early universe plasma until as late as the electron-positron annihilation epoch. This late kinetic decoupling leads to a minimal mass for the earliest dark protohalos of thousands of solar masses, in contrast to the conventional weak scale DM scenario where they are of order 10^{-6} solar masses.
We investigate the evolution of abundance of the asymmetric thermal Dark Matter when its annihilation rate at chemical decoupling is boosted by the Sommerfeld enhancement. Then we discuss the effect of kinetic decoupling on relic abundance of asymmetric Dark Matter when the interaction rate depends on the velocity. Usually the relic density of asymmetric Dark Matter is analyzed in the frame of chemical decoupling. Indeed after decoupling from the chemical equilibrium, asymmetric Dark Matter particles and anti--particles were still in kinetic equilibrium for a while. It has no effect on the cas…
We explore the Dirac fermionic and complex scalar dark matter in the framework of a hidden $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{X}$ gauge theory with kinetic mixing between the $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{X}$ and $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{Y}$ gauge fields. The $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{X}$ gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken due to a hidden Higgs field. The kinetic mixing provides a portal between dark matter and standard model particles. Besides, an additional Higgs portal can be realized in the complex scalar case. Dark matter interactions with nucleons are typically isospin violating, and direct detection constr…
The kinetic decoupling of dark matter (DM) from the primordial plasma sets the size of the first and smallest dark matter halos. Studies of the DM kinetic decoupling have hitherto mostly neglected interactions between the DM and the quarks in the plasma. Here we illustrate their importance using two frameworks: a version of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and an effective field theory with effective DM-quark interaction operators. We connect particle physics and astrophysics obtaining bounds on the smallest dark matter halo size from collider data and from direct dark matter s…
Motivated by the possibility of enhancing dark matter (DM) self-interaction cross-section $σ_{\rm self}$, we have revisited the issue of DM annihilation through a Breit-Wigner resonance. In this case thermally averaged annihilation cross-section has strong temperature dependence, whereas elastic scattering of DM on the thermal bath particles is suppressed. This leads to the early kinetic decoupling of DM and an interesting interplay in the evolution of DM density and temperature that can be described by a set of coupled Boltzmann equations. The standard Breit-Wigner parametrization of a resona…
The size of the smallest dark matter collapsed structures, or protohalos, is set by the temperature at which dark matter particles fall out of kinetic equilibrium. The process of kinetic decoupling involves elastic scattering of dark matter off of Standard Model particles in the early universe, and the relevant cross section is thus closely related to the cross section for dark matter scattering off of nuclei (direct detection) but also, via crossing symmetries, for dark matter pair production at colliders and for pair annihilation. In this study, we employ an effective field theoretic approac…
Transverse momentum spectra of the non-strange, strange and multi-strange particles in central and peripheral Copper-Copper, Gold-Gold and Lead-Lead collisions are analyzed by the blast wave model with Boltzmann Gibbs statistics. The model results are approximately in agreement with the experimental data measured by BRAHMS, STAR, SPS, NA 49 and WA 97 Collaborations in special transverse momentum ranges. Bulk properties in terms of kinetic freeze out temperature, transverse flow velocity and freezeout volume are extracted from the transverse momentum spectra of the particles. Separate freeze ou…
Kinetic decoupling of dark matter typically happens much later than chemical freeze-out. In fact, local thermal equilibrium is an important assumption for the usual relic density calculations based on solving the Boltzmann equation (for its 0-th moment) describing the dark matter number density. But is this assumption always justified? Here we address this question and discuss the consequences of more accurate treatments. The first treatment is relying on the inclusion of higher moments of the Boltzmann equation and the second on solving the evolution of the phase-space distribution function f…
Warm dark matter cosmologies have been widely studied as an alternative to the cold dark matter paradigm, the characteristic feature being a suppression of structure formation on small cosmological scales. A very similar situation occurs if standard cold dark matter particles are kept in local thermal equilibrium with a, possibly dark, relativistic species until the universe has cooled down to keV temperatures. We perform a systematic phenomenological study of this possibility, and classify all minimal models containing dark matter and an arbitrary radiation component that allow such a late ki…
We consider a plausible scenario in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) where all the genuine supersymmetric (SUSY) particles are heavier than the electroweak scale. In this situation, indirect searches via their radiative corrections to low energy observables are complementary to direct searches, and they can be crucial if the SUSY masses are at the TeV energy range. We summarize the most relevant heavy SUSY radiative effects in Higgs boson physics and emphasize those that manifest a non-decoupling behaviour. We focus, in particular, on the SUSY-QCD non-decoupling effects in ferm…
Non-Decoupling D-Terms are an attractive possibility to enhance the tree-level mass of the standard model like Higgs boson in supersymmetric models. We discuss here for the case of a new Abelian gauge group two effects usually neglected in literature: (i) the size of the additional radiative corrections to the Higgs mass due to the presence of the new gauge coupling, and (ii) the impact of gauge kinetic mixing. It is shown that both effects reduce to some extent the positive effect of the non-decoupling D-terms on the Higgs mass.
Calculating the abundance of thermally produced dark matter particles has become a standard procedure, with sophisticated methods guaranteeing a precision that matches the percent-level accuracy in the observational determination of the dark matter density. Here, we point out that one of the main assumptions in the commonly adopted formalism, namely local thermal equilibrium during the freeze-out of annihilating dark matter particles, does not have to be satisfied in general. We present two methods for how to deal with such situations, in which the kinetic decoupling of dark matter happens so …
I present comprehensive analyses of the viable parameter regions of the Standard Model of particle physics and two of its extensions: the Standard Model with four fermion generations and the Two-Higgs-Doublets model of type II. Applying frequentist methods, I have performed global fits which show that the Standard Model is compatible with electroweak precision data and the measured Higgs signal strengths. The Standard Model with four generations is excluded by the experimental results with a p-value corresponding to more than five standard deviations. In the Two-Higgs-Doublets model of type II…
Elastic scattering between dark matter particles and a relativistic species such as photons or neutrinos leads to a transfer of energy from the latter due to their intrinsically different temperature scaling relations. In this work, we point out that this siphoning of energy from the radiation bath manifests as a change in the effective number of neutrinos $N_{\rm eff}$, and compute the expected shift $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ for dark matter-photon and dark matter-neutrino elastic scattering as a function of the dark matter mass $m_ψ$ and scattering cross section $σ_{ψ-X}$. For $(m_ψ,σ_{ψ-X})$-parameter…
We initiate the study of a new class of beyond the Standard Model states that we call "Loryons." They have the defining characteristic of being non-decoupling, in the sense that their physical mass is dominated by a contribution from the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs boson. The stakes are high: the discovery of a Loryon would tell us that electroweak symmetry must be non-linearly realized in the effective field theory of the Standard Model. Loryons have their masses bounded from above by perturbative unitarity considerations and thus define a finite parameter space for exploration. Aft…
We reexamine the evolution of thermal relic particle abundances for the case where the interaction rate depends on the particle velocities. For the case of Sommerfeld enhancement, we show that the standard analytic approximation, modified in a straightforward way, provides an estimate of the relic particle abundance that is accurate to within 10% (in comparison to less than 1% error for the non-Sommerfeld-enhanced case). We examine the effect of kinetic decoupling on relic particle abundances when the interaction rate depends on the velocity. For the case of pure p-wave annihilation, the effec…
Extra dimensions can be very useful tools when constructing new physics models. Previously, we began investigating toy models for the 5-D analog of the kinetic mixing/vector portal scenario where the interactions of bulk dark matter with the brane-localized fields of the Standard Model are mediated by a massive $U(1)_D$ dark photon also living in the bulk. In that setup, where the dark matter was taken to be a complex scalar, a number of nice features were obtained such as $U(1)_D$ breaking by boundary conditions without the introduction of a dark Higgs field, the absence of potentially troubl…
At so high temperature (T) that the coupling constant (g) is small and the masses of the particles are negligible, different scheme has to be applied in each energy scale in the analysis of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In the soft energy region (p gT), the simple perturbative expansion called the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation can be applied, and that approximation expects the existence of the bosonic and fermionic collective excitations called plasmon and plasmino. On the other hand, in the ultrasoft energy region (p g^2T), the HTL approximation is inapplicable due to infrared singula…
Non-thermal dark matter generation is an appealing alternative to the standard paradigm of thermal WIMP dark matter. We reconsider non-thermal production mechanisms in a systematic way, and develop a numerical code for accurate computations of the dark matter relic density. We discuss in particular scenarios with long-lived massive states decaying into dark matter particles, appearing naturally in several beyond the standard model theories, such as supergravity and superstring frameworks. Since non-thermal production favors dark matter candidates with large pair annihilation rates, we analyze …
We formulate the thermal renormalization group, an implementation of the Wilsonian RG in the real-time (CTP) formulation of finite temperature field theory, for fermionic fields. Using a model with scalar and fermionic degrees of freedom which should describe the two-flavor chiral phase-transition, we discuss the mechanism behind fermion decoupling and universality at second order transitions. It turns out that an effective mass-like term in the fermion propagator which is due to thermal fluctuations and does not break chiral symmetry is necessary for fermion decoupling to work. This situation…
The method of searching for signals of heavy virtual particles is developed. It is based on a renormalization group equation for the low energy effective Lagrangian and the decoupling theorem. As an application, the model independent search for Abelian Z' boson in four-fermion processes is analyzed. The basic one-loop renormalization group relation for the parameters of the effective Lagrangian is derived which gives possibility to reduce the problem to the scattering of the Standard Model particles in the ``external field'' substituting heavy virtual Z' state. From the set of derived relation…
A new approach to the path integral over fermionic fields, based on the extension of a reformulation of the adiabatic approximation to some quantum mechanical systems, is presented. A novel non-analytic contribution to the efective fermionic action for a fermion field coupled to a non-Abelian vector field is identified. The possible interpretation of this contribution as a violation of the decoupling theorem in Quantum Field Theory (QFT) is discussed. The generalization of the approach to the case of finite temperature and density suggests the possibility to apply it to the understanding of no…
We investigate the scalar potential of a general $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet model. The outcome of our analysis does not depend on the fermionic sector of the model. We identify a decoupling limit for the scalar spectrum of this scenario. In view of the recent LHC Higgs data, we show our numerical results only in the decoupling limit. Unitarity and stability of the scalar potential demand that many new scalars must be lurking below 1 TeV. We provide numerical predictions for $h\to γγ$ and $h\to Z γ$ signal strengths which can be used to falsify the theory.
We derive a linearized kinetic equation for fermionic excitations with an ultrasoft momentum, g^2T, from the Kadanoff-Baym equation in a Yukawa model and quantum electrodynamics (QED) at extremely high T, where g is the coupling constant. We show that this equation is equivalent to the self-consistent equation in the resummed perturbation theory used in the analysis of the fermion spectrum with the ultrasoft momentum. Furthermore, we derive the equation that determines the n-point function with external lines for a pair of fermions and (n-2) bosons with ultrasoft momenta in QED.
We study the distortions of equilibrium spectra of relic neutrinos due to the interactions with electrons, positrons, and neutrinos in the early Universe. We solve the integro-differential kinetic equations for the neutrino density matrix, including three-flavor oscillations and finite temperature corrections from QED up to the next-to-leading order $\mathcal{O}(e^3)$ for the first time. In addition, the equivalent kinetic equations in the mass basis of neutrinos are directly solved, and we numerically evaluate the distortions of the neutrino spectra in the mass basis as well, which can be eas…
Early decoupling of thermally produced dark matter particles due to feeble interactions with the surrounding plasma typically results in their excessive abundance. In this work we propose a simple mechanism for dark matter depopulation. It relies on a specific cosmological evolution under which dark matter particles become temporarily unstable and hence decay away reducing the overall abundance. The instability phase may be followed by an incomplete regeneration phase until the final abundance is established. We explicitly demonstrate this mechanism within a simple toy model of fermionic dark …
We provide a derivation for the particle number densities on phase space for scalar and fermionic fields in terms of Wigner functions. Our expressions satisfy the desired properties: for bosons the particle number is positive, for fermions it lies in the interval between zero and one, and both are consistent with thermal field theory. As applications we consider the Bunch-Davies vacuum and fermionic preheating after inflation.

Using the UrQMD/coarse graining approach we explore the kinetic freeze-out stage in central Au + Au collisions at various energies. These studies allow us to obtain detailed information on the thermodynamic properties (e.g. temperature and chemical potential) of the system during the kinetic decoupling stage. We explore five relevant collision energies in detail, ranging from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.4\,\mathrm{GeV}$ (GSI-SIS) to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200\,\mathrm{GeV}$ (RHIC). By adopting a standard Hadron Resonance Gas equation of state, we determine the average temperature $\langle T \rangle$ and the aver…
The properties of the quark and hadron Universe are explored. Kinetic theory considerations are presented proving that hadron abundances after phase transformation from quarks to hadrons remain intact till abundances of hadrons become irrelevant. The hadronization process and the evolution of hadron yields is described in detail.
The expressions of the shear viscosity and the bulk viscosity components in the presence of an arbitrary external magnetic field for a system of hot charged scalar Bosons (spin-0) as well as for a system of hot charged Dirac Fermions (spin-$\frac{1}{2}$) have been derived by employing the one-loop Kubo Formalism. This is done by explicitly evaluating the thermo-magnetic spectral functions of the energy momentum tensors using the real time formalism of finite temperature field theory and the Schwinger proper time formalism. In the present work, a rich quantum field theoretical structure in the …
In some models of thermal relic dark matter, the relic abundance may be set by inelastic scattering processes (rather than annihilations) becoming inefficient as the universe cools down. This effect has been called coscattering. We present a procedure to numerically solve the full momentum-dependent Boltzmann equations in coscattering, which allows for a precise calculation of the dark matter relic density including the effects of early kinetic decoupling. We apply our method to a simple model, containing a fermionic SU(2) triplet and a fermionic singlet with electroweak-scale masses, at small…
In the early universe, neutrinos are slightly coupled when electron-positron pairs annihilate transferring their entropy to photons. This process originates non-thermal distortions on the neutrino spectra which depend on neutrino flavour, larger for nu_e than for nu_mu or nu_tau. We study the effect of three-neutrino flavour oscillations on the process of neutrino decoupling by solving the momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino spectra. We find that oscillations do not essentially modify the total change in the neutrino energy density, giving N_eff=3.046 in terms of the effectiv…
We study the difference between thermally produced fermionic and bosonic hot dark matter in detail. In the linear regime of structure formation, their distinct free-streaming behaviours can lead to pronounced differences in the matter power spectrum. While not detectable with current cosmological data, such differences will be clearly observable with upcoming large scale weak lensing surveys for particles as light as m_HDM ~ 0.2 eV. In the nonlinear regime, bosonic hot dark matter is not subject to the same phase space constraints that severely limit the amount of fermionic hot dark matter inf…
The Foldy--Wouthuysen transformation is known to uncover the nonrelativistic limit of a generalized Dirac Hamiltonian, lending an intuitive physical interpretation to the effective operators within Schrödinger--Pauli theory. We here discuss the opposite, ultrarelativistic limit which requires the use of a fundamentally different expansion where the leading kinetic term in the Dirac equation is perturbed by the mass of the particle and other interaction (potential) terms, rather than vice versa. The ultrarelativistic decoupling transformation is applied to free Dirac particles (in the Weyl basi…
We develop a combined hydro-kinetic approach which incorporates a hydrodynamical expansion of the systems formed in \textit{A}+\textit{A} collisions and their dynamical decoupling described by escape probabilities. The method corresponds to a generalized relaxation time ($τ_{\text{rel}}$) approximation for the Boltzmann equation applied to inhomogeneous expanding systems; at small $τ_{\text{rel}}$ it also allows one to catch the viscous effects in hadronic component - hadron-resonance gas. We demonstrate how the approximation of sudden freeze-out can be obtained within this dynamical picture o…
The lightest supersymmetric particle, most likely the neutralino, might account for a large fraction of dark matter in the Universe. We show that the primordial spectrum of density fluctuations in neutralino cold dark matter (CDM) has a sharp cut-off due to two damping mechanisms: collisional damping during the kinetic decoupling of the neutralinos at about 30 MeV (for typical neutralino and sfermion masses) and free streaming after last scattering of neutralinos. The last scattering temperature is lower than the kinetic decoupling temperature by one order of magnitude. The cut-off in the prim…
Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are arguably the most natural DM candidates from a particle physics point of view. After their number density has frozen out in the early universe, determining their relic density today, WIMPs are still kept very close to thermal equilibrium by scattering events with standard model particles. The complete decoupling from the thermal bath happens as late as around 1-10 MeV, thereby setting an important cosmological scale that can directly be translated into a small-scale cutoff of the spectrum of matter density fluctuations. We present here a full an…
We consider the decoupling of neutrinos in the early Universe in presence of non-standard neutral current neutrino-electron interactions (NSI). We first discuss a semi-analytical approach to solve the relevant kinetic equations and then present the results of fully numerical and momentum-dependent calculations, including flavor neutrino oscillations. We present our results in terms of both the effective number of neutrino species (N_eff) and the impact on the abundance of He-4 produced during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We find that, for NSI parameters within the ranges allowed by present labora…
General features of spontaneous baryogenesis are studied. The relation between the time derivative of the (pseudo)goldstone field and the baryonic chemical potential is revisited. It is shown that this relation essentially depends upon the representation chosen for the fermionic fields with non-zero baryonic number (quarks). The calculations of the cosmological baryon asymmetry are based on the kinetic equation generalized to the case of non-stationary background. The effects of the finite interval of the integration over time are also included into consideration. All these effects combined le…
We calculate the kinetic-decoupling temperature for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in supersymmetric (SUSY) and universal-extra-dimension (UED) models that can account for the cold-dark-matter abundance determined from cosmic microwave background measurements. Depending on the parameters of the particle-physics model, a wide variety of decoupling temperatures is possible, ranging from several MeV to a few GeV. These decoupling temperatures imply a range of masses for the smallest protohalos much larger than previously thought -- ranging from 10^{-6} earth masses to 10^{2} earth m…
We reconsider the lower bound on the mass of a fermionic dark matter (DM) candidate resulting from the existence of known small Dwarf Spheroidal galaxies, in the hypothesis that their DM halo is constituted by degenerate fermions, with phase-space density limited by the Pauli exclusion principle. By relaxing the common assumption that the DM halo scale radius is tied to that of the luminous stellar component and by marginalizing on the unknown stellar velocity dispersion anisotropy, we prove that observations lead to rather weak constraints on the DM mass, that could be as low as tens of eV. I…
We study the kinetic theory for a (2+1)-dimensional fermionic system with special emphasis on the parity violating properties associated with the fermion mass. The Wigner function approach is used to derive hydrodynamical transport coefficients to the first spatial derivative order. As a first attempt, the collisions between fermions are neglected. The resulting system is dissipationless. The parity violating Hall electric conductivity has the same temperature and chemical potential dependence as the quantum field theory result at one-loop. Vorticity dependent transport properties, which were …
We construct three flipped SU(5) X U(1)_X models from F-theory, and consider two such models from free fermionic string model building. To achieve the decoupling scenario in F-theory models and the string-scale gauge coupling unification in free fermionic models, we introduce vector-like particles at the TeV scale that can be observed at the Large Hadron Collider. We study gauge coupling unification, and find that proton decay is within the reach of the future Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. In these models, the doublet-triplet splitting problem and monopole problem can be solved, the neutrino ma…
We give a brief overview of the kinetic theory for spin-1/2 fermions in Wigner function formulism. The chiral and spin kinetic equations can be derived from equations for Wigner functions. A general Wigner function has 16 components which satisfy 32 coupled equations. For massless fermions, the number of independent equations can be significantly reduced due to the decoupling of left-handed and right-handed particles. It can be proved that out of many components of Wigner functions and their coupled equations, only one kinetic equation for the distribution function is independent. This is call…
The low velocity part of a kinetic equilibrium dark matter distribution has higher phase space density and is more easily incorporated in formation of a low mass galaxy than the high velocity part. For relativistically decoupling fermions (bosons), this explains one (two) orders of magnitude of the observed trend, that phase space densities in dark matter halo cores are highest in the smallest systems, and loosens constraints on particle masses significantly. For non-relativistic decoupling and/or finite chemical potentials even larger effects may occur. It is therefore premature to dismiss di…
The kinetic decoupling of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the early universe sets a scale that can directly be translated into a small-scale cutoff in the spectrum of matter density fluctuations. The formalism presented here allows a precise description of the decoupling process and thus the determination of this scale to a high accuracy from the details of the underlying WIMP microphysics. With decoupling temperatures of several MeV to a few GeV, the smallest protohalos to be formed range between 10^{-11} and almost 10^{-3} solar masses -- a somewhat smaller range than what wa…
We review the distortions of spectra of relic neutrinos due to the interactions with electrons, positrons, and neutrinos in the early universe. We solve integro-differential kinetic equations for the neutrino density matrix, including vacuum three-flavor neutrino oscillations, oscillations in electron and positron background, a collision term and finite temperature corrections to electron mass and electromagnetic plasma up to the next-to-leading order $\mathcal{O}(e^3)$. After that, we estimate the effects of the spectral distortions in neutrino decoupling on the number density and energy dens…
