We study the distortions of equilibrium spectra of relic neutrinos due to the interactions with electrons, positrons, and neutrinos in the early Universe. We solve the integro-differential kinetic equations for the neutrino density matrix, including three-flavor oscillations and finite temperature corrections from QED up to the next-to-leading order $\mathcal{O}(e^3)$ for the first time. In addition, the equivalent kinetic equations in the mass basis of neutrinos are directly solved, and we numerically evaluate the distortions of the neutrino spectra in the mass basis as well, which can be easily extrapolated into those for non-relativistic neutrinos in the current Universe. In both bases, we find the same value of the effective number of neutrinos, $N_{\rm eff} = 3.044$, which parameterizes the total neutrino energy density. The estimated error for the value of $N_{\rm eff}$ due to the numerical calculations and the choice of neutrino mixing parameters would be at most 0.0005.
We reexamine the evolution of thermal relic particle abundances for the case where the interaction rate depends on the particle velocities. For the case of Sommerfeld enhancement, we show that the standard analytic approximation, modified in a straightforward way, provides an estimate of the relic particle abundance that is accurate to within 10% (in comparison to less than 1% error for the non-Sommerfeld-enhanced case). We examine the effect of kinetic decoupling on relic particle abundances when the interaction rate depends on the velocity. For the case of pure p-wave annihilation, the effec…
Kinetic decoupling of dark matter typically happens much later than chemical freeze-out. In fact, local thermal equilibrium is an important assumption for the usual relic density calculations based on solving the Boltzmann equation (for its 0-th moment) describing the dark matter number density. But is this assumption always justified? Here we address this question and discuss the consequences of more accurate treatments. The first treatment is relying on the inclusion of higher moments of the Boltzmann equation and the second on solving the evolution of the phase-space distribution function f…
The Cosmic Neutrino Background is a prediction of the standard cosmological model, but it has been never observed directly. Experiments with the aim of detecting relic CNB neutrinos are under development. For such experiments, the expected event rate depends on the local number density of relic neutrinos. Since massive neutrinos can be attracted by the gravitational potential of our galaxy and cluster locally, a local overdensity of relic neutrinos should exist at Earth. We report the status of our knowledge on the clustering of neutrinos and the consequences for future direct detection experi…
The Standard Cosmological Model predicts the existence of relic neutrinos, which are indirectly probed through the effective number of relativistic species in the early Universe. In addition, from neutrino flavour oscillations we know that at least two of the neutrino mass states have a non-zero mass. Since the expansion of the Universe has diluted the energy of relic neutrinos, those that are massive are also non relativistic today. This means that they can be trapped in strong gravitational potentials, such as the one of the Milky Way. We review the calculation of the local overdensity of re…
In the paper we study the Breit-Wigner enhancement of dark matter (DM) annihilation considering the kinetic decoupling in the evolution of DM freeze-out at the early universe. Since the DM temperature decreases much faster (as $1/R^2$) after kinetic decoupling than that in kinetic equilibrium (as 1/R) we find the Breit-Wigner enhancement of DM annihilation rate after the kinetic decoupling will affect the DM relic density significantly. Focusing on the model parameters that trying to explain the anomalous cosmic positron/electron excesses observed by PAMELA/Fermi/ATIC we find the elastic scatt…
We investigate the evolution of abundance of the asymmetric thermal Dark Matter when its annihilation rate at chemical decoupling is boosted by the Sommerfeld enhancement. Then we discuss the effect of kinetic decoupling on relic abundance of asymmetric Dark Matter when the interaction rate depends on the velocity. Usually the relic density of asymmetric Dark Matter is analyzed in the frame of chemical decoupling. Indeed after decoupling from the chemical equilibrium, asymmetric Dark Matter particles and anti--particles were still in kinetic equilibrium for a while. It has no effect on the cas…
The standard model of cosmology predicts the existence of cosmic neutrino background in the present Universe. To detect cosmic relic neutrinos in the vicinity of the Earth, it is necessary to evaluate the gravitational clustering effects on relic neutrinos in the Milky Way. Here we introduce a reweighting technique in the N-one-body simulation method, so that a single simulation can yield neutrino density profiles for different neutrino masses and phase space distributions. In light of current experimental results that favor small neutrino masses, the neutrino number density contrast around th…
Both active and sterile sub-eV neutrinos can form the cosmic neutrino background in the early Universe. We consider the beta-decaying (e.g., $^3$H) and EC-decaying (e.g., $^{163}$Ho) nuclei as the promising targets to capture relic neutrinos in the laboratory. We calculate the capture rates of relic electron neutrinos and antineutrinos against the corresponding beta decay or electron capture (EC) decay backgrounds in the (3+$N_{\rm s}$) flavor mixing scheme, and discuss the future prospect in terms of the PTOLEMY project. We stress that such direct measurements of hot DM might not be hopeless …
Calculating the abundance of thermally produced dark matter particles has become a standard procedure, with sophisticated methods guaranteeing a precision that matches the percent-level accuracy in the observational determination of the dark matter density. Here, we point out that one of the main assumptions in the commonly adopted formalism, namely local thermal equilibrium during the freeze-out of annihilating dark matter particles, does not have to be satisfied in general. We present two methods for how to deal with such situations, in which the kinetic decoupling of dark matter happens so …
We study the decoupling process of neutrinos in the early universe in the presence of three-flavour oscillations. The evolution of the neutrino spectra is found by solving the corresponding momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino density matrix, including for the first time the proper collision integrals for both diagonal and off-diagonal elements. This improved calculation modifies the evolution of the off-diagonal elements of the neutrino density matrix and changes the deviation from equilibrium of the frozen neutrino spectra. However, it does not vary the contribution of neutr…
Non-thermal dark matter generation is an appealing alternative to the standard paradigm of thermal WIMP dark matter. We reconsider non-thermal production mechanisms in a systematic way, and develop a numerical code for accurate computations of the dark matter relic density. We discuss in particular scenarios with long-lived massive states decaying into dark matter particles, appearing naturally in several beyond the standard model theories, such as supergravity and superstring frameworks. Since non-thermal production favors dark matter candidates with large pair annihilation rates, we analyze …
We show how 21 cm cosmology can test relic neutrino radiative decays into sterile neutrinos. Using recent EDGES results, we derive constraints on the lifetime of the decaying neutrinos. If the EDGES anomaly will be confirmed, then there are two solutions, one for much longer and one for much shorter lifetimes than the age of the universe, showing how relic neutrino radiative decays can explain the anomaly in a simple way. We also show how to combine EDGES results with those from radio background observations, showing that potentially the ARCADE 2 excess can be also reproduced together with the…
We present a novel method for detecting the relic neutrino background that takes advantage of structured quantum degeneracy to amplify the drag force from neutrinos scattering off a detector. Developing this idea, we present a characterization of the present day relic neutrino distribution in an arbitrary frame, including the influence of neutrino mass and neutrino reheating by $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We present explicitly the neutrino velocity and de Broglie wavelength distributions for the case of an Earthbound observer. Considering that relic neutrinos could exhibit quantum liquid features a…
A massive particle decaying into neutrinos in the early Universe is known to be less constrained than if it was decaying into other standard model particles. However, even if the decay proceeds into neutrinos, the latter still inevitably emit secondary particles undergoing electromagnetic interactions that can be probed. We analyse in details how sensitive various cosmological probes are to such secondary particles, namely CMB anisotropies, CMB spectral distortions, and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. For relics whose lifetime is shorter than the age of the Universe, this leads to original and strin…
We revise a problem of the birefringence of electromagnetic waves in a chiral medium in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics arising in an isotropic plasma due to parity violation. The recent calculations of the weak correction to the photon polarization operator in electroweak plasma allow significantly to improve some previous estimates of such effect in astrophysics. Nevertheless, it has remained beyond the abilities of the present technics yet.
Cosmological data can be used to search for---and characterize---light particles in the standard model, if these populate our Universe. In addition to the well-known effect of these light relics in the background cosmology, usually parametrized through a change in the effective number $N_{\rm eff}$ of neutrino species, these particles can become nonrelativistic at later times, affecting the growth of matter fluctuations due to their thermal velocities. An extensively studied example is that of massive neutrinos, which are known to produce a suppression in the matter power spectrum due to their…
The lightest neutralino is a compelling candidate to account for cold dark matter in the universe in supersymmetric theories with $R$--parity. In the CP-invariant theory, the neutralino relic density can be found in accord with recent WMAP data if neutralino annihilation in the early universe occurs via the s-channel $A$ funnel. In contrast, in the CP-noninvariant theory two heavy neutral Higgs bosons can contribute to the Higgs funnel mechanism significantly due to a CP-violating {\it complex} mixing between two heavy states, in particular, when they are almost degenerate. With a simple analy…
In the primordial Universe, neutrino decoupling occurs only slightly before electron-positron annihilations, leading to an increased neutrino energy density with order $10^{-2}$ spectral distortions compared to the standard instantaneous decoupling approximation. However, there are discrepancies in the literature on the impact it has on the subsequent primordial nucleosynthesis, in terms of both the magnitude of the abundance modifications and their sign. We review how neutrino decoupling indirectly affects the various stages of nucleosynthesis, namely, the freezing out of neutron abundance, t…
If massive neutrinos are Dirac particles, the proposed PTOLEMY experiment will hopefully be able to discover cosmic neutrino background via $ν^{}_e + {^3}{\rm H} \to {^3}{\rm He} + e^-$ with a capture rate of $Γ^{}_{\rm D} \approx 4~{\rm yr}^{-1}$. Recently, it has been pointed out that right-handed components of Dirac neutrinos could also be copiously produced in the early Universe and become an extra thermal or nonthermal ingredient of cosmic relic neutrinos, enhancing the capture rate to $Γ^{}_{\rm D} \approx 5.1~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ or $Γ^{}_{\rm D} \approx 6.1~{\rm yr}^{-1}$. In this work, we i…
We explore the implications of the existence of heavy neutral fermions (i.e., sterile neutrinos) for the thermal history of the early universe. In particular, we consider sterile neutrinos with rest masses in the 100 MeV to 500 MeV range, with couplings to ordinary active neutrinos large enough to guarantee thermal and chemical equilibrium at epochs in the early universe with temperatures T > 1 GeV, but in a range to give decay lifetimes from seconds to minutes. Such neutrinos would decouple early, with relic densities comparable to those of photons, but decay out of equilibrium, with conseque…
Neutrinos mediate long range forces among macroscopic bodies in vacuum. When the bodies are placed in the neutrino cosmic background, these forces are modified. Indeed, at distances long compared to the scale $T^{-1}$, the relic neutrinos completely screen off the 2-neutrino exchange force, whereas for small distances the interaction remains unaffected.
We present up to date cosmological bounds on the sum of active neutrino masses as well as on extended cosmological scenarios with additional thermal relics, as thermal axions or sterile neutrino species. Our analyses consider all the current available cosmological data in the beginning of year 2014, including the very recent and most precise Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. In the minimal three active neutrino scenario, we find Sum m_nu < 0.22 eV at 95% CL from the combination of CMB, BAO and Hubble Space Telescope measurements of…
There is an accepted approach to calculation of the neutrino flavor density-matrix in the halo of a supernova, in which neutrino amplitudes, not cross-sections, need to be followed carefully in the region above the region of frequent scatterings. The same reasoning and techniques, applied to the evolution of neutrino flavors and energy distributions in the early universe in the era of neutrino decoupling, leads to radical changes in the prediction of the effects of the neutrino-neutrino interaction. Predictions for the production of sterile neutrinos, should they exist, will also be changed.
Axions, if realized in nature, can be copiously produced in the early universe via thermal processes, contributing to the mass-energy density of thermal hot relics. In light of the most recent cosmological observations, we analyze two different thermal processes within a realistic mixed hot-dark-matter scenario which includes also massive neutrinos. Considering the axion-gluon thermalization channel we derive our most constraining bounds on the hot relic masses $m_a < 7.46$ eV and $\sum m_ν< 0.114$ eV both at 95 per cent CL; while studying the axion-pion scattering, without assuming any specif…

The PTOLEMY experiment, implementing a $100~{\rm g}$ surface-deposition tritium target, is promising to detect cosmic neutrino background via $ν^{}_e + {^3}{\rm H} \to {^3}{\rm He} + e^-$. In this talk, I consider a thermal production of right-handed Dirac neutrinos in the early Universe, and investigate their impact on the capture rate of cosmic relic neutrinos at PTOLEMY.
Unlike the relic photons, relic neutrinos have not so far been observed. The Cosmic Neutrino Background (C$ν$B) is the oldest relic from the Big Bang, produced a few seconds after the Bang itself. Due to their impact in cosmology, relic neutrinos may be revealed indireclty in the near future through cosmological observations. In this talk we concentrate on other proposals, made in the last 30 years, to try to detect the C$ν$B directly, either in laboratory searches (through tiny accelerations they produce on macroscopic targets) or through astrophysical observations (looking for absorption dip…
I review the topic of relic neutrino asymmetry generation through active-sterile neutrino and antineutrino oscillations in the early universe. Applications to (i) the suppression of sterile neutrino production, and (ii) the primordial Helium abundance are briefly presented.
We calculate and discuss the implications of neutrino self-interactions for the physics of weak decoupling and big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) in the early universe. In such neutrino-sector extensions of the standard model, neutrinos may not free-stream, yet can stay thermally coupled to one another. Nevertheless, the neutrinos exchange energy and entropy with the photon, electron-positron, and baryon component of the early universe only through the ordinary weak interaction. We examine the effects of neutrino self-interaction for the primordial helium and deuterium abundances and $N_{\rm eff}$…
We study the gravitational clustering of big bang relic neutrinos onto existing cold dark matter and baryonic structures within the flat $Λ$CDM model. We then discuss the implications of clustering for scattering-based relic neutrino detection methods, ranging from flux detection via Cavendish-type torsion balances, to target detection using accelerator beams and cosmic rays.
We present a novel dark matter candidate, an Elastically Decoupling Relic (ELDER), which is a cold thermal relic whose present abundance is determined by the cross-section of its elastic scattering on Standard Model particles. The dark matter candidate is predicted to have a mass ranging from a few to a few hundred MeV, and an elastic scattering cross-section with electrons, photons and/or neutrinos in the $10^{-3}-1$ fb range.
We report on the main results presented at the workshop on The Physics of Relic Neutrinos. The study of relic neutrinos involves a broad spectrum of problems in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Features of baryogenesis and leptogenesis could be imprinted in the properties of the relic neutrino sea. Relic neutrinos played a crucial role in the big bang nucleosynthesis. Being the hot component of the dark matter, they have participated in the structure formation in the universe. Although the direct detection of the sea seems impossible at this stage, there could be various indirect …
Being generated, the relic neutrino background contained equal fractions of electron $ν_e$, muon $ν_μ$, and taon $ν_τ$ neutrinos. We show that the gravitational field of our Galaxy and other nearby cosmic objects changes this composition near the Solar System, enriching it with the heaviest neutrino $nu_3$. This mass state is almost free of the electron component (only $\sim 2\%$ of $ν_e$) and contains more muon component than the tau one. As a result, the relic background becomes enriched with taon and particularly muon neutrinos. The electron relic neutrinos are the rarest for a terrestrial …
I review the essentials of ultrahigh-energy neutrino interactions, show how neutral-current detection and flavor tagging can enhance the scientific potential of neutrino telescopes, and sketch new studies on neutrino encounters with dark matter relics and on gravitational lensing of neutrinos.
In the early universe, neutrinos are slightly coupled when electron-positron pairs annihilate transferring their entropy to photons. This process originates non-thermal distortions on the neutrino spectra which depend on neutrino flavour, larger for nu_e than for nu_mu or nu_tau. We study the effect of three-neutrino flavour oscillations on the process of neutrino decoupling by solving the momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino spectra. We find that oscillations do not essentially modify the total change in the neutrino energy density, giving N_eff=3.046 in terms of the effectiv…
We perform a model independent study of the neutrino momentum distribution at freeze-out, treating the freeze-out temperature as a free parameter. Our results imply that measurement of neutrino reheating, as characterized by the measurement of the effective number of neutrinos $N_ν$, amounts to the determination of the neutrino kinetic freeze-out temperature within the context of the standard model of particle physics where the number of neutrino flavors is fixed and no other massless (fractional) particles arise. At temperatures on the order of the neutrino mass, we show how cosmic background…
The existence of big bang relic neutrinos - exact analogues of the big bang relic photons comprising the cosmic microwave background radiation - is a basic prediction of standard cosmology. At present, the observational evidence for their existence rests entirely on cosmological measurements, such as the light elemental abundances, anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background, and the large-scale matter power spectrum. In this review, we concentrate on the prospects of more direct, weak interaction based relic neutrino detection techniques which are sensitive to the cosmic neutrino backgrou…
In this paper, we calculate the relic abundance of the dark matter particles when they can annihilate into sterile neutrinos with the mass $\lesssim 100 \text{ GeV}$ in a simple model. Unlike the usual standard calculations, the sterile neutrino may fall out of the thermal equilibrium with the thermal bath before the dark matter freezes out. In such a case, if the Yukawa coupling $y_N$ between the Higgs and the sterile neutrino is small, this process gives rise to a larger $Ω_{\text{DM}} h^2$ so we need a larger coupling between the dark matter and the sterile neutrino for a correct relic abun…
We point out that, for Dirac neutrinos, in addition to the standard thermal cosmic neutrino background (C$ν$B) there could also exist a non-thermal neutrino background with comparable number density. As the right-handed components are essentially decoupled from the thermal bath of standard model particles, relic neutrinos with a non-thermal distribution may exist until today. The relic density of the non-thermal (nt) background can be constrained by the usual observational bounds on the effective number of massless degrees of freedom $N_\mathrm{eff}$, and can be as large as $n_{ν_{\mathrm{nt}}…
One of the targets of future Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation measurements is to improve the current accuracy in the neutrino sector and reach a much better sensitivity on extra dark radiation in the Early Universe. In this paper we study how these improvements can be translated into constraining power for well motivated extensions of the Standard Model of elementary particles that involve axions thermalized before the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase transition by scatterings with gluons. Assuming a fiducial $Λ$CDM cosmological model, we simulate future data for S…
Here we estimate the magnitude of the signals expected for realistic cosmic neutrino backgrounds in detectors attempting to measure the mechanical forces exerted on macroscopic targets by the elastic scattering of relic neutrinos. We study effects proportional to the weak coupling constant $G_F$ and to $G_F^2$ for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos, either relativistic or non-relativistic, both gravitationally bound or not.
The spectrum and event rate of supernova relic neutrinos are calculated taking into account the dependence on the time it takes for the shock wave in supernova cores to revive. The shock revival time should depend on the still unknown explosion mechanism of collapse-driven supernovae. The contribution of black-hole-forming failed supernovae is also considered. The total event rate is higher for models with a longer shock revival time and/or a failed-supernova contribution. The hardness of the spectrum does not strongly depend on the shock revival time, but the spectrum becomes hard owing to th…
We consider some consequences of the presence of a cosmological lepton asymmetry in the form of neutrinos. A relic neutrino degeneracy enhances the contribution of massive neutrinos to the present energy density of the Universe, and modifies the power spectrum of radiation and matter. Comparing with current observations of cosmic microwave background anisotropies and large scale structure, we derive some constraints on the relic neutrino degeneracy and on the spectral index in the case of a flat Universe with a cosmological constant.
The cosmic background neutrino of temperature 1.9 K affects rates of radiative emission of neutrino pair (RENP) from metastable excited atoms, since its presence blocks the pair emission by the Pauli exclusion principle. We quantitatively investigate how the Pauli blocking distorts the photon energy spectrum and calculate its sensitivity to cosmic parameters such as the neutrino temperature and its chemical potential. Important quantities for high sensitivities to these parameter measurement are found to be the level spacing of atomic de-excitation and the unknown mass value of lightest neutri…
We consider the decoupling of neutrinos in the early Universe in presence of non-standard neutral current neutrino-electron interactions (NSI). We first discuss a semi-analytical approach to solve the relevant kinetic equations and then present the results of fully numerical and momentum-dependent calculations, including flavor neutrino oscillations. We present our results in terms of both the effective number of neutrino species (N_eff) and the impact on the abundance of He-4 produced during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We find that, for NSI parameters within the ranges allowed by present labora…
We analyze the prospects for testing the cosmic neutrino background and its interpretation as source of Neutrino Dark Energy with the radio telescope LOFAR.
