Black body materials prove promising candidates to meet future energy demands as they are able to harvest energy from the total bandwidth of solar radiation. Here, we report on high absorption (> 98 %) near-black body-like structures consisting of a silica scaffold and Ag nanoparticles with a layer thickness below 10 um; fabricated using metastable atomic layer deposition (MS-ALD) and to be applied for a wide solar spectrum ranging from 220 nm to 2500 nm. Several effects contribute collectively and in a synergistic manner to the high absorbance, including the pronounced heterogeneity of the nanoparticles in size and shape, particle plasmon hybridization and the trapping of omni-directionally scattered light in the 3D hierarchical hybrid structures. We propose that, in the future, MS-ALD needs to be considered as a simple and promising method to fabricate black-body materials with excellent broadband absorption.
Pulsed laser deposition, a non-equilibrium thin-film growth technique, was used to stabilize metastable tetragonal iron sulfide (FeS), the bulk state of which is known as a superconductor with a critical temperature of 4 K. Comprehensive experiments revealed four important factors to stabilize tetragonal FeS epitaxial thin films: (i) an optimum growth temperature of 300 °C followed by thermal quenching, (ii) an optimum growth rate of ~7 nm/min, (iii) use of a high-purity bulk target, and (iv) use of a single-crystal substrate with small in-plane lattice mismatch (CaF2). Electrical resistivity …
Wearable electronic devices and gadgets raise the need for flexible, thin and lightweight batteries. In this article we present for the first time, a unique, single-step method for the preparation of a membrane-electrode assembly for flexible-batteries application. Concurrent electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of positive and negative battery electrodes (LFP and LTO) on opposite sides of a commercial nanoporous membrane (Celgard 2325) results in the formation of a three-layer-battery structure. The cell comprising this electrophoretically deposited structure ran for more than 150 cycles with 125…
The self-assembly of Leucoquinizarin molecule on Au(111) surface is shown to be characterized by the molecules mostly in their keto-enolic tautomeric form, with evidences of their temporary switching to other tautomeric forms. This reveals a metastable chemistry of the assembled molecules, to be considered for their possible employment in the formation of more complex hetero-organic interfaces
Kinetic Self-Assembly of Metals on Co-polymer Templates
Here, we describe a method for the enhanced self-assembly of triblock Janus colloids targeted to form a kagome lattice. Using computer simulations, we demonstrate that the formation of this elusive structure can be significantly improved by self-propelling or activating the colloids along the axis connecting their hydrophobic hemispheres. The process by which metastable aggregates are destabilized and transformed into the favored kagome lattice is quite general, and we argue this active approach provides a systematic pathway to improving the self-assembly of a large number of colloidal structu…
Understanding and engineering the self-assembly of soft colloidal particles (microgels) at liquid-liquid interfaces is broadening their use in colloidal lithography. Here, we present a new route to assemble rectangular lattices of microgels at near zero surface pressure relying on the balance between attractive quadrupolar capillary interactions and steric repulsion among the particles at water/oil interfaces. These self-assembled rectangular lattices are obtained for a broad range of particles and, after deposition, can be used as lithography masks to obtain regular arrays of vertically align…
A continuum, post-deposition mesoscopic model of a Moiré-regulated self-assembly of metal nanoclusters on a twisted bilayer graphene is presented. Quasi-two-dimensional nanocluster-like steady states at a low adsorbate coverage are analytically determined for Pt, Ni, and Pb adsorbates, pointing that nanoclusters self-assemble at the Moiré cells centers. This is followed by the computations of nanoclusters self-assembly dynamics. Differences in the self-assembly efficiency for three chosen metals are highlighted across three typical values of an initial submonolayer coverage and for three tempe…
In this study, a variational method for the inverse problem of self-assembly, i.e., a reconstruction of the interparticle interaction potential of a given structure, is applied to three-dimensional crystals. According to the method, the interaction potential is derived as a function that maximizes the free-energy functional of the one- and two-particle density distribution functions. The interaction potentials of the target crystals, including those with face-centered cubic (fcc), body-centered cubic (bcc), and simple hexagonal (shx) lattices, are obtained by numerical maximization of the func…
We propose a general framework for solving inverse self-assembly problems, i.e. designing interactions between elementary units such that they assemble spontaneously into a predetermined structure. Our approach uses patchy particles as building blocks, where the different units bind at specific interaction sites (the patches), and we exploit the possibility of having mixtures with several components. The interaction rules between the patches is determined by transforming the combinatorial problem into a Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) which searches for solutions where all bonds are forme…
Unique Morphologies of Molybdenum Disulphide: Sheets, Diffusion Limited Cluster Aggregates and Fractals, by Langmuir- Blodgett Assembly for Advanced Electronics
The promise of self-assembly to enable bottom-up formation of materials with prescribed architectures and functions has driven intensive efforts to uncover rational design principles for maximizing the yield of a target structure. Yet, despite many successful examples of self-assembly, ensuring kinetic accessibility of the target structure remains an unsolved problem in many systems. In particular, long-lived kinetic traps can result in assembly times that vastly exceed experimentally accessible timescales. One proposed solution is to design non-equilibrium assembly protocols in which system p…
In materials science, it is often assumed that ground state crystal structures predicted by density functional theory are the easiest polymorphs to synthesize. Ternary nitride materials, with many possible metastable polymorphs, provide a rich materials space to study what influences thermodynamic stability and polymorph synthesizability. For example, ZnZrN2 is theoretically predicted at zero Kelvin to have an unusual layered "wurtsalt" ground state crystal structure with compelling optoelectronic properties, but it is unknown whether this structure can be realized experimentally under practic…
Colloids that interact via a short-range attraction serve as the primary building blocks for a broad range of self-assembled materials. However, one of the well-known drawbacks to this strategy is that these building blocks rapidly and readily condense into a metastable colloidal gel. Using computer simulations, we illustrate how the addition of a small fraction of purely repulsive self-propelled colloids, a technique referred to as active doping, can prevent the formation of this metastable gel state and drive the system toward its thermodynamically favored crystalline target structure. The s…
The layer-by-layer (LbL) technique is adopted for the construction of multilayers encompassing chitosan and graphene oxide (GO) platelets capable of improving the flame retardant properties open cell PU foams. The LbL assembly follows a linear growth regime as evaluated by infrared spectroscopy and yields a multilayer structure where GO platelets are embedded within a chitosan continuous matrix. 3 and 6 bi-layers (BL) can efficiently coat the complex 3D structure of the foam and substantially improve its flame retardant properties. 3BL only add 10% to the original mass and can suppress the mel…
We constructed a simple but effective model to predict the layered intergrowth structures by combining the self-assembly phenomenon in confined space and the sandwich configuration of layered materials. In this model, a two-dimensional confined space is constructed by two known block layers, such as the Fe$_2$As$_2$ block of iron-based superconductors. Then, the crystal structure prediction is carried out only inside the confined space to search for brand-new block layers. We realized this model on the basis of the USPEX9.4 code. In the test, the already existing iron-based superconductors can…
The deposition of a monolayer by direct self-assembly from solution of an active spin-crossover (SCO) complex via chemisorption has been achieved starting from the perchlorate salt of Co(II) bis(4-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2:6,2-terpyridine). MALDI-TOF MS, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirm the presence of an intact monolayer of SCO molecules grafted through carboxylate groups to the Ag surface. Three different spectroscopic techniques (Raman, XPS and X-ray Absorption spectroscopy, XAS) evidence a thermal spin transition of such monolayer of molecules. To our knowl…
Nitrides feature many interesting properties, such as a wide range of bandgaps suitable for optoelectronic devices including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and piezoelectric response used in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Nitrides are also significantly underexplored compared to oxides and other chemistries, with many being thermochemically metastable, sparking interest from a basic science point of view. This paper reports on experimental and computational exploration of the Mg-Sb-N material system, featuring both metastable materials and interesting semiconducting properties. Using sp…
Developing sustainable battery electrode manufacturing methods is particularly pressing for alloying-type active materials, such as silicon, which often require additional energy-intensive and solvent-based processing to reinforce them with a buffer matrix. This work introduces a new method to fabricate Si anodes as continuous, tough fabrics of arbitrary thickness, without processing solvents, polymeric binders, carbon additive, or any reinforcing matrix. The anodes consist of percolated networks of long Si nanowires directly assembled from suspension in the gas phase, where they are grown via…
The adsorption properties of free base 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(p-cyanophenyl)porphyrin (2H-TCNPP) on thin films of rock salt (rs) CoO(100) on Au(111) was studied in ultra-high vacuum by a combination of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) and density functional theory (DFT). Films of rs-CoO(100) on Au(111) are prepared with excellent quality in a suitable thickness range. Particularly, we found that films of only 1 nm thickness show a semiconducting energy gap of $E_\mathrm{g}=(2.5\pm 0.2)\,\textrm{eV}$. Upon deposition at 300 K, 2H-TCNPP adsorbs flat-lying and…
4d transition metal oxides have emerged as promising materials for numerous applications including high mobility electronics. SrNbO$_{3}$ is one such candidate material, serving as a good donor material in interfacial oxide systems and exhibiting high electron mobility in ultrathin films. However, its synthesis is challenging due to the metastable nature of the d$^{1}$ Nb$^{4+}$ cation and the limitations in the delivery of refractory Nb. To date, films have been grown primarily by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), but development of a means to grow and stabilize the material via molecular beam e…
Large-area single-crystal monolayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) can be grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). However, the high temperatures and fast timescales at which the conversion from a gas-phase precursor to the 2D material appear, make it extremely challenging to simultaneously follow the atomic arrangements. We utilise helium atom scattering to discover and control the growth of novel 2D h-BN nanoporous phases during the CVD process. We find that prior to the formation of h-BN from the gas-phase precursor, a metastable $(3…
