A key problem in the field of quantum criticality is to understand the nature of quantum phase transitions in systems of interacting itinerant fermions, motivated by experiments on a variety of strongly correlated materials. Much attention has been paid in recent years to two-dimensional (2D) materials in which itinerant fermions acquire a pseudo-relativistic Dirac dispersion, such as graphene, topological insulator surfaces, and certain spin liquids. This article reviews the phenomenology and theoretical description of quantum phase transitions in systems of 2D Dirac fermions.
Quantum critical phenomena may be qualitatively different when massless Dirac fermions are present at criticality. Using our recently-discovered fermion-sign-free Majorana quantum Monte Carlo (MQMC) method introduced by us in Ref. [1], we investigate the quantum critical phenomena of {\it spinless} Dirac fermions at their charge-density-wave (CDW) phase transitions on the honeycomb lattice having $N_s=2L^2$ sites with largest $L=24$. By finite-size scaling, we accurately obtain critical exponents of this so-called Gross-Neveu chiral-Ising universality class of {\it two} (two-component) Dirac f…
We show that the effective action that results from integrating out massive Kaehler-Dirac fermions propagating on a curved three dimensional space is a topological gravity theory of Chern-Simons type. In the presence of a domain wall, massless, two dimensional Kaehler-Dirac fermions appear that are localized to the wall. Potential gravitational anomalies arising for these domain wall fermions are cancelled via anomaly inflow from the bulk gravitational theory. We also study the invariance of the theory under large gauge transformations. The analysis and conclusions generalize straightforwardly…
The fermionic Shastry-Sutherland model has a rich phase diagram, including phases with massless Dirac fermions, a quadratic band crossing point, and a pseudospin-1 Weyl fermion. Berry phases defined by the one-dimensional momentum as a parameter are quantized into 0 or pi due to the inversion symmetry combined with the time reversal, or existence of the glide plane, which also protects the massless Dirac cones with continuous parameters. This is the symmetry protected Z2 quantization. We have further demonstrated the Z2 Berry phases generically determine the existence of edge states in various…
We present a formalism to calculate the orbital magnetization of interacting Dirac fermions under a magnetic field. In this approach, the divergence difficulty is overcome with a special limit of the derivative of the thermodynamic potential with respect to the magnetic field. The formalism satisfies the particle-hole symmetry of the Dirac fermions system. We apply the formalism to the interacting Dirac fermions in graphene. The charge and spin orderings and the exchange interactions between all the Landau levels are taken into account by the mean-field theory. The results for the orbital magn…
We present a derivation of the recently discovered duality between the free massless (2+1)-dimensional Dirac fermion and QED$_3$. Our derivation is based on a regularized lattice model of the Dirac fermion and is similar to the more familiar derivation of the boson-vortex duality. It also highlights the important role played by the parity anomaly, which is somewhat less obvious in other discussions of this duality in the literature.
Tang et al. [Science 361, 570 (2018)] report on the properties of Dirac fermions with both on-site and Coulomb interactions. The substantial decrease up to ~40% of the Fermi velocity of Dirac fermions with on-site interaction is inconsistent with the numerical data near the Gross-Neveu quantum critical point. This results from an inappropriate finite-size extrapolation.
We attentively investigate the effects of short-range fermion-fermion interactions on the low-energy properties of both two-dimensional type-I and type-II tilted Dirac semimetals by means of the renormalization group framework. Practicing the standard renormalization group procedures via taking into account all one-loop corrections gives rise to the coupled energy-dependent evolutions of all interaction parameters, which are adopted to carefully examine whether and how the fermion-fermion interactions influence the low-energy physical behaviors of tilted Dirac fermions. After carrying out the …
We theoretically investigate the magnetotransport of Dirac fermions coupled with localized moments to understand the physical properties of the Dirac material EuMnBi$_2$. Using an interlayer hopping form, which simplifies the complicated interaction between the layers of Dirac fermions and the layers of magnetic moments in EuMnBi$_2$, the theory reproduces most of the features observed in this system. The hysteresis observed in EuMnBi$_2$ can be caused by the valley splitting that is induced by the spin-orbit coupling and the external magnetic field with the molecular field created by localize…
Through resistivity measurements of an organic crystal hosting massless Dirac fermions with a charge-ordering instability, we reveal the effect of interactions among Dirac fermions on the charge transport. A low-temperature resistivity upturn appears robustly irrespectively of pressure and is enhanced while approaching the critical pressure of charge ordering, indicating that the insulating behavior originates from short-range Coulomb interactions. Observation of apparently vanishing gap in the charge-ordered phase accords with the theoretical prediction of the non-topological edge states.
We develop a composite Dirac fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effects (QHE) near charge neutrality in graphene. We show that the interactions between the composite Dirac fermions lead to dynamical mass generation through exciton condensation. The four-fold spin-valley degeneracy is fully lifted due to the mass generation and the exchange effects such that the odd-denominator fractional QHE observed in the vicinity of charge neutrality can be understood in terms of the integer QHE of the composite Dirac fermions. At the filling factor $ν=1/2$, we show that the massive composite Di…
The classic composite fermion field theory (Ref. 1) builds up an excellent framework to uniformly study important physical objects and globally explain anomalous experimental phenomena in fractional quantum Hall physics while there are also inherent weaknesses. We present a nonperturbative emergent Dirac fermion theory from this strongly correlated composite fermion field theory, which overcomes these serious long-standing shortcomings. The particle-hole symmetry of Dirac equation resolves this particle-hole symmetry enigma in the composite fermion field theory. With the help of presented nume…
We propose a new physical interpretation of the Diophantine equation of $σ_{xy}$ for the Hofstadter problem. First, we divide the energy spectrum, or Hofstadter's butterfly, into smaller self-similar areas called "subcells", which were first introduced by Hofstadter to describe the recursive structure. We find that in the energy gaps between subcells, there are two ways to account for the quantization rule of $σ_{xy}$, that are consistent with the Diophantine equation: Landau quantization of (i) massless Dirac fermions or (ii) free fermions in Hofstadter's butterfly.
Recent work on a family of boson-fermion mappings has emphasized the interplay of symmetry and duality: Phases related by a particle-vortex duality of bosons (fermions) are related by time-reversal symmetry in their fermionic (bosonic) formulation. We present exact mappings for a number of concrete models that make this property explicit on the operator level. We illustrate the approach with one- and two-dimensional quantum Ising models, and then similarly explore the duality web of complex bosons and Dirac fermions in (2+1) dimensions.
We study a lattice model of interacting Dirac fermions in $(2+1)$ dimension space-time with an SU(4) symmetry. While increasing interaction strength, this model undergoes a {\it continuous} quantum phase transition from the weakly interacting Dirac semimetal to a fully gapped and nondegenerate phase without condensing any Dirac fermion bilinear mass operator. This unusual mechanism for mass generation is consistent with recent studies of interacting topological insulators/superconductors, and also consistent with recent progresses in lattice QCD community.
We investigate the interacting Dirac fermions on honeycomb lattice by cluster dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) combined with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo simulation (CTQMC). A novel scenario for the semimetal-Mott insulator transition of the interacting Dirac fermions is found beyond the previous DMFT studies. We demonstrate that the non-local spatial correlations play a vital role in the Mott transition on the honeycomb lattice. We also elaborate the experimental protocol to observe this phase transition by the ultracold atoms on optical honeycomb lattice.
With a conserving formalism within the self-consistent Born approximation, we study the Hall conductivity of Dirac fermions in graphene under charged impurity scatterings. The calculated inverse Hall coefficient is compared with the experimental data. It is shown that the present calculations for the Hall coefficient and the electric conductivity are in good agreement with the experimental measurements.
We investigate the effects of long-ranged Coulomb interactions in a tilted Dirac semimetal in two dimensions by using the perturbative renormalization-group method. Depending on the magnitude of the tilting parameter, the undoped system can have either Fermi points (type-I) or Fermi lines (type-II). Previous studies usually performed the renormalization-group transformations by integrating out the modes with large momenta. This is problematic when the Fermi surface is open, like type-II Dirac fermions. In this work, we study the effects of Coulomb interactions, following the spirit of Shankar\…
In this study, we investigate the Kondo effect induced by the s-d interaction where the conduction bands are occupied by Dirac fermions. The Dirac fermion has the linear dispersion and is described typically by the Hamiltonian such as $H_k= v{\bf k}\cdot σ+m σ_0$ for the wave number ${\bf k}$ where $σ_j$ are Pauli matrices and $σ_0$ is the unit matrix. We derived the formula of the Kondo temperature $T_K$ by means of the Green's function theory for Green's functions including Dirac fermions and the localized spin. The $T_K$ was determined from a singularity of Green's functions in the form $T_…
We review the recently proposed Dirac composite fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. This paper is based on a talk given at the Nambu Symposium at University of Chicago, March 11-13, 2016.
We report two dimensional Dirac fermions and quantum magnetoresistance in single crystals of CaMnBi$_2$. The non-zero Berry's phase, small cyclotron resonant mass and first-principle band structure suggest the existence of the Dirac fermions in the Bi square nets. The in-plane transverse magnetoresistance exhibits a crossover at a critical field $B^*$ from semiclassical weak-field $B^2$ dependence to the high-field unsaturated linear magnetoresistance ($\sim 120%$ in 9 T at 2 K) due to the quantum limit of the Dirac fermions. The temperature dependence of $B^*$ satisfies quadratic behavior, wh…
We show that the QCD Dirac spectrum at finite chemical potential using a matrix model in the spontaneously broken phase, is amenable to a generic 2-dimensional effective action. The eigenvalues form a droplet with strong screening and plasmon oscillation. The droplet is threaded by a magnetic vortex which is at the origin of a Berry phase. For quarks in the complex or Dirac representation, the anomalous transport in the droplet of eigenvalues bear some similarities with that in droplets of composite fermions at half filling suggesting that the latters maybe Dirac fermions.
Originating from relativistic quantum field theory, Dirac fermions have been recently applied to study various peculiar phenomena in condensed matter physics, including the novel quantum Hall effect in graphene, magnetic field driven metal-insulator-like transition in graphite, superfluid in 3He, and the exotic pseudogap phase of high temperature superconductors. Although Dirac fermions are proposed to play a key role in these systems, so far direct experimental evidence of Dirac fermions has been limited. Here we report the first direct observation of massless Dirac fermions with linear dispe…
Type-II Dirac/Weyl semimetals are characterized by strongly tilted Dirac cones such that the Dirac/Weyl node emerges at the boundary of electron and hole pockets as a new state of quantum matter, distinct from the standard Dirac/Weyl points with a point-like Fermi surface which are referred to as type-I nodes. The type-II Dirac fermions were recently predicted by theory and have since been confirmed in experiments in the PtSe2-class of transition metal dichal-cogenides. However, the Dirac nodes observed in PtSe2, PdTe2 and PtTe2 candidates are quite far away from the Fermi level, making the si…
We generalize the Landau levels of two-dimensional Dirac fermions to three dimensions and above with the full rotational symmetry. Similarly to the two-dimensional case, there exists a branch of zero energy Landau levels of fractional fermion modes for the massless Dirac fermions. The spectra of other Landau levels distribute symmetrically with respect to the zero energy scaling with the square root of the Landau-level indices. This mechanism is a nonminimal coupling of Dirac fermions to the background fields. This high dimensional relativistic Landau-level problem is a square-root problem of …
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in BaMnBi2 single crystals. BaMnBi2 is a layered bad metal with highly anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase, small cyclotronmass, and the first-principles band structure calculations indicate the presence of Dirac fermions in Bi square nets. Quantum oscillations in the Hall channel suggest the presence of both electron and hole pockets, whereas Dirac and parabolic states coexist at the Fermi level.
Discovering Dirac fermions with novel properties has become an important front in condensed matter and materials sciences. Here, we report the observation of unusual Dirac fermion states in a strongly-correlated electron setting, which are uniquely distinct from those of graphene and conventional topological insulators. In strongly-correlated cerium monopnictides, we find two sets of highly anisotropic Dirac fermions that interpenetrate each other with negligible hybridization, and show a peculiar four-fold degeneracy where their Dirac nodes overlap. Despite the lack of protection by crystalli…
Motivated by the results of recent photoemission and tunneling studies, we discuss potential many-body sources of a finite gap in the Dirac fermion spectrum of graphene. Specifically, we focus on the putative Peierls- and Cooper-like pairing instabilities which can be driven by sufficiently strong Coulomb and electron-phonon interactions, respectively. Our results compare favorably with the available experimental and Monte Carlo data.
The coupling of monochromatic light fields and solids introduces nonequilibrium Floquet states, offering opportunities to create and explore new topological phenomena. Using combined first-principles and Floquet analysis we show that one can freely engineer Floquet-Dirac fermions (FDFs) in graphene by tuning the frequency and intensity of linearly polarized light. Not only type-II FDFs are created, but they also coexist with type-I FDFs near the Fermi level. Intriguingly, novel topologically nontrivial edge states connecting type-I and type-II Floquet-Dirac points emerge in photodriven graphen…
We use determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations to study the role of electron-electron interactions on three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermions based on the $π$-flux model on a cubic lattice. We show that the Hubbard interaction drives the 3D Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator only above a finite critical interaction strength and the long-ranged AF order persists up to a finite temperature. We evaluate the critical interaction strength and temperatures using finite-size scaling of the spin structure factor. The critical behaviors are consistent with the (3+1)d Gross-…
We provide a framework to compute the dynamics of massive Dirac fermions using holography. To this end we consider two bulk Dirac fermions that are coupled via a Yukawa interaction and propagate on a gravitational background in which a mass deformation is introduced. Moreover, we discuss the incorporation of this approach in semiholography. The resulting undoped fermionic spectral functions indeed show that the Yukawa coupling induces a gap in the holographic spectrum, whereas the semiholographic extension is in general gapped but additionally contains a quantum critical point at which the eff…
We present inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of magnetic excitations in YbMnBi$_2$, which reveal features consistent with a direct coupling of magnetic excitations to Dirac fermions. In contrast with the large broadening of magnetic spectra observed in antiferromagnetic metals such as the iron pnictides, here the spin waves exhibit a small but resolvable intrinsic width, consistent with our theoretical analysis. The subtle manifestation of spin-fermion coupling is a consequence of the Dirac nature of the conduction electrons, including the vanishing density of states near the Dir…
In the previous paper, we studied the random-mass Dirac fermion in one dimension by using the transfer-matrix methods and by introducing an imaginary vector potential in order to calculate the localization lengths. Especially we considered effects of the nonlocal but short-range correlations of the random mass. In this paper, we shall study effects of the long-range correlations of the random mass especially on the delocalization transition. The results depend on how randomness is introduced in the Dirac mass.
Three-dimensional topological insulators are characterized by insulating bulk state and metallic surface state involving Dirac fermions that behave as massless relativistic particles. These Dirac fermions are responsible for achieving a number of novel and exotic quantum phenomena in the topological insulators and for their potential applications in spintronics and quantum computations. It is thus essential to understand the electron dynamics of the Dirac fermions, i.e., how they interact with other electrons, phonons and disorders. Here we report super-high resolution angle-resolved photoemis…
We study the role of long-range electron-electron interactions in a system of two-dimensional anisotropic Dirac fermions, which naturally appear in uniaxially strained graphene, graphene in external potentials, some strongly anisotropic topological insulators, and engineered anisotropic graphene structures. We find that while for small interactions and anisotropy the system restores the conventional isotropic Dirac liquid behavior, strong enough anisotropy can lead to the formation of a quasi-one dimensional electronic phase with dominant charge order (anisotropic excitonic insulator).
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 single crystals. YbMnBi2 is a layered material with anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase and small cyclotron mass indicate the presence of quasi two dimensional Dirac fermions. Quantum oscillations in Hall resistivity suggest the presence of both electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface whereas the Berry phase suggests spin-orbit coupling.
We present a non-perturbative study of the quantum many-body effects caused by the long-range Coulomb interaction in a two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetal. This kind of semimetal may be realized in deformed graphene and a class of other realistic materials. In the non-interacting limit, the dispersion of semi-Dirac fermion is linear in one direction and quadratic in the other direction. When the impact of Coulomb interaction is taken into account, such a dispersion can be significantly modified. To reveal the correlation effects, we first obtain the exact self-consistent Dyson-Schwinger equat…
We consider the role of spontaneous lattice symmetry breaking in strongly interacting two dimensional Dirac systems. The fermion induced quantum (multi-)criticality is described by Dirac fermions coupled to a dynamical order parameter that is composed of mass and emergent gauge fields. This is illustrated for the example of translational symmetry breaking due to charge-density wave order on the honeycomb lattice. Using a renormalization-group analysis we find that the putative emergent Lorentz invariance is violated. Finally, we identify that topological phase transitions are well described by…
The derivation for the transport coefficients of an electron system in the presence of temperature gradient and the electric and magnetic fields are presented. The Nernst conductivity and the transverse thermoelectric power of the Dirac fermions in graphene under charged impurity scatterings and weak magnetic field are calculated on basis of the self-consistent Born approximation. The result is compared with so far the available experimental data.
We propose an experimental method to examine the in-plane anisotropy of electronic structure in layered conductors. In the method, we measure the interlayer magnetoresistance as a function of in-plane magnetic field orientation. We applied it to an organic Dirac fermion system a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 to experimentally determine the orientation of the anisotropic Dirac cones. It is concluded that the long axis of the elliptic constant-energy contours of the Dirac cone is tilted by approximately -30 deg from the crystalline a-axis to b-axis under hydrostatic pressures. Additionally, we observed a signat…
We report quasi-two-dimensional Dirac fermions and quantum magnetoresistance in LaAgBi$_2$. The band structure shows several narrow bands with nearly linear energy dispersion and Dirac-cone-like points at the Fermi level. The quantum oscillation experiments revealed one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi pocket and another complex pocket with small cyclotron resonant mass. The in-plane transverse magnetoresistance exhibits a crossover at a critical field $B^*$ from semiclassical weak-field $B^2$ dependence to the high-field unsaturated linear magnetoresistance which is attributed to the quantum limit…
We construct an action for the composite Dirac fermion consistent with symmetries of electrons projected to the lowest Landau level. First we construct a generalization of the $g=2$ electron that gives a smooth massless limit on any curved background. Using the symmetries of the microscopic electron theory in this massless limit we find a number of constraints on any low-energy effective theory. We find that any low-energy description must couple to a geometry which exhibits nontrivial curvature even on flat space-times. Any composite fermion must have an electric dipole moment proportional an…
We demonstrate how to control the spectra and current flow of Dirac electrons in both a graphene sheet and a topological insulator by applying either two linearly polarized laser fields with frequencies $ω$ and $2ω$ or a monochromatic (one-frequency) laser field together with a spatially periodic static potential(graphene/TI superlattice). Using the Floquet theory and the resonance approximation, we show that a Dirac point in the electron spectrum can be split into several Dirac points whose relative location in momentum space can be efficiently manipulated by changing the characteristics of t…
We study the response to an applied flux of an interacting system of Dirac-Weyl fermions confined in a one-dimensional (1D) ring. Combining analytical calculations with density-matrix renormalization group results, we show that tuning of interactions leads to a unique many-body system that displays either a suppression or an enhancement of the Drude weight - the zero-frequency peak in the ac conductivity - with respect to the non-interacting value. An asymmetry in the interaction strength between same- and different-pseudospin Dirac-Weyl fermions leads to Drude weight enhancement. Viceversa, s…
We present a renormalization group analysis of the disorder effects on the low-energy behaviors of twodimensional tilted Dirac-fermion systems, in which the fermions have two distinct orbitals unrelated by any symmetry. Four types of disordered potential, two interorbital and two intraorbital, are considered. If there is only one type of interorbital disorder, the fermion-disorder scattering induces logarithmic or power-law corrections to the fermion density of states and specific heat. In contrast, the intraorbital disorder can turn the system into a strongly disordered phase. In this disorde…
