We present inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of magnetic excitations in YbMnBi$_2$, which reveal features consistent with a direct coupling of magnetic excitations to Dirac fermions. In contrast with the large broadening of magnetic spectra observed in antiferromagnetic metals such as the iron pnictides, here the spin waves exhibit a small but resolvable intrinsic width, consistent with our theoretical analysis. The subtle manifestation of spin-fermion coupling is a consequence of the Dirac nature of the conduction electrons, including the vanishing density of states near the Dirac points. Accounting for the Dirac fermion dispersion specific to \ymb\ leads to particular signatures, such as the nearly wave-vector independent damping observed in the experiment.
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 single crystals. YbMnBi2 is a layered material with anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase and small cyclotron mass indicate the presence of quasi two dimensional Dirac fermions. Quantum oscillations in Hall resistivity suggest the presence of both electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface whereas the Berry phase suggests spin-orbit coupling.
Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can result in ground states with non-trivial topological properties. The situation is even richer in magnetic systems where the magnetic ordering can potentially have strong influence over the electronic band structure. The class of AMnBi$_2$ (A = Sr, Ca) compounds are important in this context as they are known to host massive Dirac fermions with strongly anisotropic dispersion that is believed to be due to the interplay between strong SOC and magnetic degrees of freedom. We report the optical conductivity of YbMnBi$_2$, a newly discovered member of this famil…

The spinon continues to be an elusive elementary excitation of frustrated antiferromagnets. To solidify evidence for its existence, we address the question of what will be the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) signatures of single crystal samples of Herbertsmithite assuming it is described by the Dirac spin liquid state. In particular, we show that the electron spectral function will have a linear in energy dependence near specific wave vectors and that this dependence is expected even after fluctuations to the mean field values are taken into account. Observation of this uniqu…
We consider a two-orbital tight-binding model defined on a layered three-dimensional hexagonal lattice to investigate the properties of topological nodal lines and their associated drumhead surface states. We examine these surface states in centrosymmetric systems, where the bulk nodal lines are of Dirac type (i.e., four-fold degenerate), as well as in non-centrosymmetric systems with strong Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, where the bulk nodal lines are of Weyl type (i.e., two-fold degenerate). We find that in non-centrosymmetric systems the nodal lines and their corresponding d…
The antiferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice is one of the most paradigmatic models in the context of spin liquids, yet the precise nature of its ground state is not understood. We use large scale density matrix normalization group simulations (DMRG) on infinitely long cylinders and find indications for the formation of a gapless Dirac spin liquid. First, we use adiabatic flux insertion to demonstrate that the spin gap is much smaller than estimated from previous DMRG simulation. Second, we find that the momentum dependent excitation spectrum, as extracted from the DMR…
We propose an experimental method to examine the in-plane anisotropy of electronic structure in layered conductors. In the method, we measure the interlayer magnetoresistance as a function of in-plane magnetic field orientation. We applied it to an organic Dirac fermion system a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 to experimentally determine the orientation of the anisotropic Dirac cones. It is concluded that the long axis of the elliptic constant-energy contours of the Dirac cone is tilted by approximately -30 deg from the crystalline a-axis to b-axis under hydrostatic pressures. Additionally, we observed a signat…
Quantum impurities serve as in-situ probes of the frustrated quantum magnets, and Dirac spin liquids are an important class of quantum spin liquids. Here, we present a general method, a combination of the Chern-Simons fermionization and the Wess-Zumino-Witten theory, to study the quantum impurity in Dirac spin liquids. Under the Chern-Simons fermionization, the gauge fluctuations are apparently suppressed and the low-energy physics is described by a number of Dirac valleys with valley-dependent pseudospin-momentum locking. The (2+1)D effective theory can be further reduced into the (1+1)D Wess…
In this talk, we describe recent experimental progress in detecting the chiral anomaly in the Dirac semimetal Na$_3$Bi in the presence of a magnetic field. The chiral anomaly, which plays a fundamental role in chiral gauge theories, was predicted to be observable in crystals by Nielsen and Ninomiya in 1983 [1]. Theoretical progress in identifying and investigating Dirac and Weyl semimetals has revived strong interest in this issue [2-6]. In the Dirac semimetal, the breaking of time-reversal symmetry by a magnetic field $\bf B$ splits each Dirac node into two chiral Weyl nodes. If an electric f…
We report the first measurements of phonon dispersion curves on the (001) surface of the strong three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3. The surface phonon measurements were carried out with the aid of coherent helium beam surface scattering techniques. The results reveal a prominent signature of the exotic metallic Dirac fermion quasi-particles, including a strong Kohn anomaly. The signature is manifest in a low energy isotropic convex dispersive surface phonon branch with a frequency maximum of 1.8 THz, and having a V-shaped minimum at approximately 2kF that defines the Kohn anomaly. …
Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are exotic phases of matter that host fractionalized excitations. It is difficult for local probes to characterize QSL, whereas quantum entanglement can serve as a powerful diagnostic tool due to its non-locality. The kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is one of the most studied and experimentally relevant models for QSL, but its solution remains under debate. Here, we perform a numerical Aharonov-Bohm experiment on this model and uncover universal features of the entanglement entropy. By means of the density-matrix renormalization group, we reveal the entangl…
Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ has been proposed to be topologically non-trivial in nature. However, evidence of its non-trivial behavior is still unexplored. We report the growth and magneto-transport study of Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ thin films, revealing for the first time the contribution of two-dimensional (2D) topological surface states. We observe exceptional non-saturated linear magnetoresistance which results from Dirac fermions inhabiting the lowest Landau level in the quantum limit. The transverse magnetoresistance changes from a semi-classical weak-field $B^{2}$ dependence to a high-fiel…
We theoretically investigate the features of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two magnetic impurities, mediated by the interfacial bound states inside a domain wall (DW). The latter separates the two regions with oppositely signed inversion symmetry broken terms in graphene and Weyl semimetal. The DW is modelled by a smooth quantum well which hosts a number of discrete bound states including a pair of gapless, metallic zero-energy modes with opposite chiralities. We find clear signatures of these interfacial chiral bound states in spin response (RKKY exchange i…
The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state is a topological state of matter resulting from the many-body effect of interacting electrons and is of vast interest in fundamental physics. The experimental observation of topological surface states (SSs) in three-dimensional bulk solids has allowed the study of a correlated chiral Dirac fermion system, which can host a single Dirac valley without spin degeneracy. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) might be observable in topological insulators. However, due to the dominant bulk conduction it is difficult t…
The half filled Landau level is expected to be approximately particle-hole symmetric, which requires an extension of the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory of the compressible state observed at this filling. Recent work indicates that, when particle-hole symmetry is preserved, the composite Fermions experience a quantized $π$-Berry phase upon winding around the composite Fermi-surface, analogous to Dirac fermions at the surface of a 3D topological insulator. In contrast, the effective low energy theory of the composite fermion liquid originally proposed by HLR lacks particle-hole symmetry and has …
Quantum spin-liquids are strongly correlated phases of matter displaying a highly entangled ground state. Due to their unconventional nature, finding experimental signatures of these states has proven to be a remarkable challenge. Here we show that the effects of local impurities can provide strong signatures of a Dirac quantum spin-liquid state. Focusing on a gapless Dirac quantum spin-liquid state as realized in NaYbO$_2$, we show that single magnetic impurity coupled to the quantum spin-liquid state creates a resonant spinon peak at zero frequency, coexisting the original Dirac spinons. We …
We followed the Shastry--Shraiman formulation of Raman scattering in Hubbard systems and considered the Raman intensity profile in the spin-1/2 "perfect" kagome lattice herbertsmithite ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2, assuming the ground state is well-described by the U(1) Dirac spin-liquid state. In the derivation of the Raman T-matrix, we found that the spin chirality term appears in the A_{2g} channel in the kagome lattice at the t^4/(ω_i-U)^3 order, but (contrary to the claims by Shastry and Shraiman) vanishes in the square lattice to that order. In the ensuing calculations on the spin-1/2 kagome lattice…
A lattice symmetry, if being nonsymmorphic, is defined by combining a point group symmetry with a fractional lattice translation that cannot be removed by changing the lattice origin. Nonsymmorphic symmetry has a substantial influence on both the connectivity and topological properties of electronic band structures in solid-state quantum materials. In this article, we review how nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetries can drive and further protect the emergence of exotic fermionic quasiparticles, including Dirac, Möbius and hourglass fermions, that manifest as the defining energy band signatures …
The electrical conductivity of suspended graphene has recently been measured for the first time, and found to behave as σ~ \sqrt{|n|} as expected for Dirac quasiparticles at large carrier density. The charge inhomogeneity is strongly reduced in suspended samples, which revealed an unexpected insulating trend in σ(T). Above a transitional density n*, the temperature dependence was found to revert to metallic. We show that these features of the DC conductivity are consistent with a simple model of gapped Dirac quasiparticles, with specific signatures of a gap in the vicinity of the charge-neutra…
Magnetic impurities in three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl systems are shown to exhibit a fascinatingly diverse range of Kondo physics, with distinctive experimental spectroscopic signatures. When the Fermi level is precisely at the Dirac point, Dirac semimetals are in fact unlikely candidates for a Kondo effect due to the pseudogapped density of states. However, the influence of a nearby quantum critical point leads to the unconventional evolution of Kondo physics for even tiny deviations in the chemical potential. Separating the degenerate Dirac nodes produces a Weyl phase: time-reversal symmet…
Beenakker noticed that the peculiar band structure of Dirac fermions in 2D solids allows for the specular Andreev reflection in these systems which has no analogue in other 2D electron systems. An interesting deformation of the Dirac equation in the solid state is to tilt it which has now materials realization. In this work we report another peculiar feature of the Andreev reflection in tilted 2D Dirac cone systems. The tilt deformation of the Dirac equation is characterized by two parameters ${\boldsymbolζ}=ζ(\cosθ,\sinθ)$. We show that when the tilt parameter is tuned to its "horizon value" …
We have observed Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effect in the single crystals of three dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ upto 50 K, traceable at field as low as 2 T and 1 T, respectively. The values of Fermi wave vector, Fermi velocity, and effective cyclotron mass of charge carrier, calculated from both the techniques, are close to each other and match well with the earlier reports. However, the de Haas-van Alphen effect clearly reflects the existence of two different Fermi surface cross-sections along certain direction and a non-trivial Berry's phase which is the signatu…
Temperature- and frequency-dependent infrared spectroscopy identifies two contributions to the electronic properties of the magnetic kagome metal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$: two-dimensional Dirac fermions and strongly correlated flat bands. The interband transitions within the linearly dispersing Dirac bands appear as a two-step feature along with a very narrow Drude component due to intraband contribution. Low-lying absorption features indicate flat bands with multiple van Hove singularities. Localized charge carriers are seen as a Drude-peak shifted to finite frequencies. The spectral weight is redistribu…
