Motivated by the results of recent photoemission and tunneling studies, we discuss potential many-body sources of a finite gap in the Dirac fermion spectrum of graphene. Specifically, we focus on the putative Peierls- and Cooper-like pairing instabilities which can be driven by sufficiently strong Coulomb and electron-phonon interactions, respectively. Our results compare favorably with the available experimental and Monte Carlo data.
We study the role of long-range electron-electron interactions in a system of two-dimensional anisotropic Dirac fermions, which naturally appear in uniaxially strained graphene, graphene in external potentials, some strongly anisotropic topological insulators, and engineered anisotropic graphene structures. We find that while for small interactions and anisotropy the system restores the conventional isotropic Dirac liquid behavior, strong enough anisotropy can lead to the formation of a quasi-one dimensional electronic phase with dominant charge order (anisotropic excitonic insulator).
The coupling of monochromatic light fields and solids introduces nonequilibrium Floquet states, offering opportunities to create and explore new topological phenomena. Using combined first-principles and Floquet analysis we show that one can freely engineer Floquet-Dirac fermions (FDFs) in graphene by tuning the frequency and intensity of linearly polarized light. Not only type-II FDFs are created, but they also coexist with type-I FDFs near the Fermi level. Theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in graphene is presented. The canonical form of the electron-nucleus hyperfine interaction is strongly modified by the linear electronic dispersion. The NMR shift and spin-lattice relaxation time are calculated as function of temperature, chemical potential, and magnetic field and three distinct regimes are identified: Fermi-, Dirac-gas, and extreme quantum limit behaviors. A critical spectrometer assessment shows that NMR is within reach for fully 13C enriched graphene of reasonable size.
We study interacting Dirac quasiparticles in disordered graphene and find that an interplay between the unscreened Coulomb interactions and pseudo-relativistic quasiparticle kinematics can be best revealed in the ballistic regime, whereas in the diffusive limit the behavior is qualitatively (albeit, not quantitatively) similar to that of the ordinary 2DEG with parabolic dispersion. We calculate the quasiparticle width and density of states that can be probed by photoemission, tunneling, and magnetization measurements.
The derivation for the transport coefficients of an electron system in the presence of temperature gradient and the electric and magnetic fields are presented. The Nernst conductivity and the transverse thermoelectric power of the Dirac fermions in graphene under charged impurity scatterings and weak magnetic field are calculated on basis of the self-consistent Born approximation. The result is compared with so far the available experimental data.
It is shown that in the absence of spontaneous symmetry breaking the Dirac cones in the system of interacting electrons on honeycomb lattice are isotropic at low energies. The effect is due to the $Z_3$ subgroup of the $D_3$ symmetry group of the dispersion relation of Dirac quasiparticles. Consequences of the violations of the $Z_3$ or the sublattice symmetry are discussed.
The quasi-2D electrons in graphene behave as massless fermions obeying a Dirac-Weyl equation in the low-energy regime near the two Fermi points. The stability of spin-polarized phases (SPP) in graphene is considered. The exchange energy is evaluated from the analytic pair-distribution functions, and the correlation energies are estimated via a closely similar four-component 2D electron fluid which has been investigated previously. Spectral analysis of Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations of magnetoresistance and of Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) measured in quasi-2D highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 156402 (2003)] reveals two types of carriers: normal (massive) electrons with Berry phase 0 and Dirac-like (massless) holes with Berry phase pi. We demonstrate that recently reported integer- and semi-integer QHE for bi-layer and single-layer graphenes take place simultaneously in HOPG samples.
Electrons in quantum materials exhibiting coexistence of dispersionless (flat) bands piercing dispersive (steep) bands can give rise to strongly correlated phenomena, and are associated with unconventional superconductivity. Recent studies show that periodic potentials can generate superlattice Dirac points at energies in graphene (is the Fermi velocity of graphene and G is the reciprocal superlattice vector). Here, we perform scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of a corrugated graphene monolayer on Rh foil. We show that the quasi-periodic ripples of nanometer wavelength in the corrugated graphene give rise to weak one-dimensional (1D) electronic potentials and thereby lead to the emergence of the superlattice Dirac points. The analytical expressions for both diagonal and off-diagonal ac and dc conductivities of graphene placed in an external magnetic field are derived. These conductivities exhibit rather unusual behavior as functions of frequency, chemical potential and applied field which is caused by the fact that the quasiparticle excitations in graphene are Dirac-like. One of the most striking effects observed in graphene is the odd integer quantum Hall effect. We argue that it is caused by the anomalous properties of the Dirac quasiparticles from the lowest Landau level. Other quantities such as Hall angle …
We report measurements of the cyclotron mass in graphene for carrier concentrations n varying over three orders of magnitude. In contrast to the single-particle picture, the real spectrum of graphene is profoundly nonlinear so that the Fermi velocity describing the spectral slope reaches ~3x10^6 m/s at n <10^10 cm^-2, three times the value commonly used for graphene. The observed changes are attributed to electron-electron interaction that renormalizes the Dirac spectrum because of weak screening. Our experiments also put an upper limit of ~0.1 meV on the possible gap in graphene.
With a conserving formalism within the self-consistent Born approximation, we study the Hall conductivity of Dirac fermions in graphene under charged impurity scatterings. The calculated inverse Hall coefficient is compared with the experimental data. It is shown that the present calculations for the Hall coefficient and the electric conductivity are in good agreement with the experimental measurements.
We study the effects of the rippling of the graphene sheet on the quasiparticle dispersion. This is achieved using a generalization to the honeycomb lattice of the Momentum Average approximation, which is accurate for all coupling strengths and at all energies. We show that even though the position of the Dirac points may move and the Fermi speed can be renormalized significantly, quasiparticles with very long lifetimes survive near the Dirac points even for very strong couplings.
We present a formalism to calculate the orbital magnetization of interacting Dirac fermions under a magnetic field. In this approach, the divergence difficulty is overcome with a special limit of the derivative of the thermodynamic potential with respect to the magnetic field. The formalism satisfies the particle-hole symmetry of the Dirac fermions system. We apply the formalism to the interacting Dirac fermions in graphene. Epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) prepared in excellent structural quality is investigated by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. It clearly displays a Dirac cone with the Dirac point shifted only slightly above the Fermi level. The moire resulting from the overlaid graphene and Ir(111) surface lattices imposes a superperiodic potential giving rise to Dirac cone replicas and the opening of minigaps in the band structure.
First-principles density functional calculations for graphene and defected graphene are used to examine when the quasi-2D electrons near the Fermi energy in graphene could be represented by massless fermions obeying a Dirac-Weyl (DW) equation. The DW model is found to be inapplicable to defected graphene containing even $\sim$3% vacancies or N substitution. However, the DW model holds in the presence of weakly adsorbed molecular layers. Using density-functional theory, we calculate the electronic bandstructure of single-layer graphene on top of hexagonal In_2Te_2 monolayers. The geometric configuration with In and Te atoms at centers of carbon hexagons leads to a Kekule' texture with an ensuing bandgap of 20 meV. The alternative structure, nearly degenerate in energy, with the In and Te atoms on top of carbon sites is characterized instead by gapless spectrum with the original Dirac cones of graphene reshaped, depending on the graphene-indium chalcogenide distance, either in the form of an undoubled pseudo-spin one Dirac cone…
A recently constructed model for low lying excitations in bilayer graphene exhibits mid-gap, zero energy modes in its Dirac-like spectrum, when a scalar order parameter takes a vortex profile. We show that these modes persist when the dynamics is extended by a gauge field interaction, which also renders finite the vortex energy. The effect of the gauge field on the zero energy wave function is to shift the phase of the (damped) oscillatory component of the wave function in the absence of the gauge field.
