Theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in graphene is presented. The canonical form of the electron-nucleus hyperfine interaction is strongly modified by the linear electronic dispersion. The NMR shift and spin-lattice relaxation time are calculated as function of temperature, chemical potential, and magnetic field and three distinct regimes are identified: Fermi-, Dirac-gas, and extreme quantum limit behaviors. A critical spectrometer assessment shows that NMR is within reach for fully 13C enriched graphene of reasonable size.
We calculate the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) response of a quantum wire where at low temperature a self-sustained electron-nuclear spin order is created. Our model includes the electron mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange, electron spin-orbit interactions, nuclear dipolar interactions, and the static and oscillating NMR fields, all of which play an essential role. The paramagnet to helimagnet transition in the nuclear system is reflected in an unusual response: it absorbs at a frequency given by the internal RKKY exchange field, rather than the external static field, wh…
We present an enhanced diffusion of nuclear spin polarization in fractional quantum Hall domain phases at $ν= 2/3$. Resistively-detected NMR mediated by electrically driven domain-wall motion is used as a probe of local nuclear polarization, manifesting pumping-dependent signal saturation behavior. This reveals that a relatively homogeneous polarization profile spreads even to places distant from pinning centers of the domain walls. We attribute this to the fact that the pumped nuclear polarization near the domain walls rapidly diffuses into the domains where nuclei experience Knight fields on…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transport measurements have been performed at high magnetic fields and low temperatures in a series of $n$-type Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ crystals. In low density samples, a complete spin polarization of the electronic system is achieved, as observed from the saturation of the isotropic component of the $^{209}$Bi NMR shift above a certain magnetic field. The corresponding spin splitting, defined in the phenomenological approach of a 3D electron gas with a large (spin-orbit-induced) effective $g$-factor, scales as expected with the Fermi energy independently determi…
The 55Mn NMR in oriented powder Mn12Ac has been investigated at 1.4-2.0 K in zero field and with external fields along the c-axis. Three kinds of 55Mn NMR composed of five-fold quadrupole-split lines for I=5/2 nuclei have been interpreted to arise from Mn4+ ion, and two crystallographically-inequivalent Mn3+ ions, respectively. It is found that the isotropic hyperfine field in the Mn4+ ion with 3d3 configuration indicates a large amount of reduction (26%) as compared with the theoretical evaluation. In the analysis for the hyperfine field of Mn3+ ions with 3d4 configuration, we have taken into…
The electron-nuclear hyperfine interaction shows up in a variety of phenomena including e.g. NMR studies of correlated states and spin decoherence effects in quantum dots. Here we focus on the hyperfine coupling and the NMR spin relaxation time, $T_1$ in Weyl semimetals. Since the density of states in Weyl semimetals varies with the square of the energy around the Weyl point, a naive power counting predicts a $1/T_1T\sim E^4$ scaling with $E$ the maximum of temperature ($T$) and chemical potential. By carefully investigating the hyperfine interaction between nuclear spins and Weyl fermions, we…
We survey some recent accumulated body of works on hyperfine-mediated transport in a confined one-dimensional channel, realized typically by electrostatic gating. Our review begins with how the spin-polarized edge current can be used as a means to dynamically generate and detect an ensemble of nuclear spins in the channel. We show how the transmission of spin-polarized edge in the presence of nuclear polarization could provide a convenient way to explain various NMR lineshapes observed in experiments. We discuss recent attempt to electrically detecting NMR at moderate to low magnetic fields th…
Using a `standard' NMR spin-echo technique we determined the spin polarization of two-dimensional electrons, confined to GaAs quantum wells, from the hyperfine shift of Ga nuclei in the wells. Concentrating on the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of spin polarization at Landau level filling factor $ν=1/2$, we find that the results are described well by a simple model of non-interacting composite fermions, although some inconsistencies remain when the two-dimensional electron system is tilted in the magnetic field.
The origin of helicity asymmetries in the optically-pumped NMR signal and hyperfine shift in GaAs is derived analytically and tested experimentally. The ratio of the optically-pumped to the equilibrium electron polarizations is a key parameter in determining both asymmetries. Variations in asymmetry with photon energy and laser power reflect variations in the local temperature and the electron spin polarization, and these two quantities are extracted from the asymmetry through a simple methodology. Other contributions to the asymmetry are considered.
The nuclear-to-electron spin angular momentum conversion via hyperfine coupling in a normal metal (NM)/ferromagnet (FM) bilayer system is theoretically investigated by using the nonequilibrium Green's function method. The spin current generated by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is found to be enhanced by the pulling effect in the FM when the temperature is lower than NMR resonance frequency. In a Co/Pt bilayer system, we show that the spin current by NMR becomes larger than that of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR).
We present fractional quantum Hall domain walls confined in a gate-defined wire structure. Our experiments utilize spatial oscillation of domain walls driven by radio frequency electric fields to cause nuclear magnetic resonance. The resulting spectra are discussed in terms of both large quadrupole fields created around the wire and hyperfine fields associated with the oscillating domain walls. This provides the experimental fact that the domain walls survive near the confined geometry despite of potential deformation, by which a localized magnetic resonance is allowed in electrical means.
The NMR relaxation rate and the static spin susceptibility in graphene are studied within a tight-binding description. At half filling, the NMR relaxation rate follows a power law as $T^2$ on the particle-hole symmetric side, while with a finite chemical potential $μ$ and next-nearest neighbor $t'$, the $(μ+3t')^2$ terms dominate at low excess charge $δ$. The static spin susceptibility is linearly dependent on temperature $T$ at half filling when $t'=0$, while with a finite $μ$ and $t'$, it should be dominated by $(μ+3t')$ terms in low energy regime. These unusual phenomena are direct results …
A method for the observation of the Knight shift in nanometer-scale region in semiconductors is developed using resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) technique in quantum Hall edge channels. Using a gate-induced decoupling of the hyperfine interaction between electron and nuclear spins, we obtain the RDNMR spectra with or without the electron-nuclear spin coupling. By a comparison of these two spectra, the values of the Knight shift can be given for the nuclear spins polarized dynamically in the region between the relevant edge channels in a single two-dimensional electron sy…
We investigate the dynamically polarized nuclear-spin system in Fe/\emph{n}-GaAs heterostructures using the response of the electron-spin system to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in lateral spin-valve devices. The hyperfine interaction is known to act more strongly on donor-bound electron states than on those in the conduction band. We provide a quantitative model of the temperature dependence of the occupation of donor sites. With this model we calculate the ratios of the hyperfine and quadrupolar nuclear relaxation rates of each isotope. For all temperatures measured, quadrupolar relaxatio…
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center has enabled widespread study of nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at low magnetic fields. NMR spectroscopy at high magnetic fields significantly improves the technique's spectral resolution, enabling clear identification of closely related chemical species. However, NV-detected NMR is typically performed using AC sensing through electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM), a hyperfine spectroscopic technique that is not feasible at high magnetic fields. Within this paper, we have explored an NV-detected NMR technique for applications of…
We observe variation in the resistively-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) lineshapes in quantum Hall breakdown. The breakdown is locally occurred in a gate-defined quantum point contact (QPC) region. Of particular interest is the observation of a dispersive lineshape occured when the bulk 2D electron gas (2DEG) is set to $ν_{\rm{b}} = 2$ and the QPC filling factor to the vicinity of $ν_{\rm{QPC}} = 1$, strikingly resemble the dispersive lineshape observed on a 2D quantum Hall state. This previously unobserved lineshape in a QPC points to simultaneous occurrence of two hyperfine-media…
The frequency splitting between the dip and the peak of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) dispersive line shape (DLS) has been measured in the quantum Hall effect regime as a function of filling factor, carrier density and nuclear isotope. The splitting increases as the filling factor tends to ν = 1 and is proportional to the hyperfine coupling, similar to the usual Knight shift versus ν-dependence. The peak frequency shifts linearly with magnetic field throughout the studied filling factor range and matches the unshifted substrate signal, detected by classical NMR. T…
We study the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in an AlGaAs/GaAs quantum Hall device with a side gate. The strength of the hyperfine interaction between electron and nuclear spins is modulated by tuning a position of the two-dimensional electron systems with respect to the polarized nuclear spins using the side-gate voltages. The NMR frequency is systematically controlled by the gate-tuned technique in a semiconductor device.
We study the mechanism of dynamical nuclear spin polarization by hyperfine interaction in spin-blocked double quantum dot system. We calculate the hyperfine transition rates and solve the master equations for the nuclear spins. Specifically, we incorporate the effects of the nuclear quadrupole coupling due to the doping-induced local lattice distortion and strain. Our results show that nuclear quadrupole coupling induced by the 5% indium substitution can be used to explain the recent experimental observation of missing arsenic NMR signal in the spin-blocked double dots.
A study of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) lineshape in the vicinity of $ν=1$ was performed on a high-mobility 2D electron gas formed in GaAs/AlGaAs. In higher Landau levels, application of an RF field at the nuclear magnetic resonance frequency coincides with an observed minimum in the longitudinal resistance, as predicted by the simple hyperfine interaction picture. Near $ν=1$ however, an anomalous dispersive lineshape is observed where a resistance peak follows the usual minimum. In an effort to understand the origin of this anomalous peak we have studied the res…
Electrically detected electron spin resonance (ESR) is used to study the hyperfine interaction of the two-dimensional electrons and the nuclei of the host lattice in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Under the microwave and radio- frequency double excitations, we have observed that the ESR line can be pinned in a very narrow range of magnetic field - in the vicinity of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of the nuclei of the GaAs crystal. Our observations suggest that this pinning effect is the result of a competition process between the ESR induced dynamic nuclear polarization and the NMR induc…
We use above-bandgap optical excitation, via a 1047 nm laser, to hyperpolarize the $^{31}$P spins in low-doped (N$_D =6\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$) natural abundance silicon at 4.2 K and 6.7 T, and inductively detect the resulting NMR signal. The $30$ kHz spectral linewidth observed is dramatically larger than the 600 Hz linewidth observed from a $^{28}$Si-enriched silicon crystal. We show that the observed broadening is consistent with previous ENDOR results showing discrete isotope mass effect contributions to the donor hyperfine coupling. A secondary source of broadening is likely due to varia…
We investigate the electric manipulation of a single electron spin in a single gate-defined quantum dot. We observe that so-far neglected differences between the hyperfine and spin-orbit mediated electric dipole spin resonance conditions have important consequences at high magnetic fields. In experiments using adiabatic rapid passage to invert the electron spin, we observe an unusually wide and asymmetric response as a function of magnetic field. Simulations support the interpretation of the lineshape in terms of four different resonance conditions. These findings may lead to isotope-selective…
The interplay of spin-polarized electronic edge states with the dynamics of the host nuclei in quantum Hall systems presents rich and non-trivial transport physics. Here, we develop a Landauer-Büttiker approach to understand various experimental features observed in the integer quantum Hall set ups featuring quantum point contacts. The approach developed here entails a phenomenological description of spin resolved inter-edge scattering induced via hyperfine assisted electron-nuclear spin flip-flop processes. A self-consistent simulation framework between the nuclear spin dynamics and edge stat…
Assuming that the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal from a $^{13}$C isotope enriched layer of graphene can be made sufficiently intense to be measured, we compute the NMR\ lineshape of the different crystals ground states that are expected to occur in graphene in a strong magnetic field. We first show that in nonuniform states, there is, in addition to the frequency shift due to the spin hyperfine interaction, a second contribution of equal importance from the coupling between the orbital motion of the electrons and the nuclei. We then show that, if the linewidth of the bare signal can b…
Water, when confined at the nanoscale acquires extraordinary transport properties. And yet there is no direct experimental evidence of these properties at nanoscale resolution. Here, by using 2D NMR diffusion-relaxation (D-T2) and spin-lattice - spin-spin relaxation (T1-T2) spectroscopy, we succeeded to resolve at the nanoscale water diffusion in single and double-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT/DWCNT). In SWCNTs, spectra display the characteristic shape of uniform water diffusion restricted in one dimension. Remarkably, in DWCNTs water is shown to split into two axial components with the inner…
An unusual regime for liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) where the magnetic field strength is so low that the $J$-coupling (intramolecular spin-spin) interactions dominate the spin Hamiltonian opens a new paradigm with applications in spectroscopy, quantum control, and in fundamental-physics experiments, including searches for well-motivated dark-matter candidates. An interesting possibility is to bring this kind of "extreme NMR" together with another one---single nuclear spin detected with a single-spin quantum sensor. This would enable single-molecule $J$-spectroscopy.
Electron spins in edge or surface modes of topological insulators (TIs) with strong spin-orbit coupling cannot be directly manipulated with microwaves due to the locking of electron spin to its momentum. We show by contrast that a resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) based technique can be used to probe the helical nature of surface conducting states. In such experiments, one applies a radio frequency (RF) field to reorient nuclear spins that then couple to electronic spins by the hyperfine interaction. The spin of the boundary electrons can thereby be modulated, resulting i…
