We present a set-theoretic version of some basic dilation results of operator theory. The results we have considered are Wold decomposition, Halmos dilation, Sz. Nagy dilation, inter-twining lifting, commuting and non-commuting dilations, BCL theorem etc. We point out some natural generalizations and variations.
We introduce a notion called `maximal commuting piece' for tuples of Hilbert space operators. Given a commuting tuple of operators forming a row contraction there are two commonly used dilations in multivariable operator theory. Firstly there is the minimal isometric dilation consisting of isometries with orthogonal ranges and hence it is a noncommuting tuple. There is also a commuting dilation related with a standard commuting tuple on Boson Fock space. We show that this commuting dilation is the maximal commuting piece of the minimal isometric dilation. We use this result to classify all rep…
We define four 3x3 commuting contractions which do not dilate to commuting isometries. However they do satisfy the scalar von Neumann inequality. These matrices are all nilpotent of order 2. We also show that any three $3\times3$ commuting contractions which are scalar plus nilpotent of order 2 do dilate to commuting isometries.
We introduce the notion of $Q$-commuting operators which is a generalization of commuting operators. We prove a generalized version of commutant lifting theorem and Ando's dilation theorem in the context of $Q$-commuting operators.
Here we study dilations of q-commuting tuples. In [BBD] the authors gave the correspondence between the two standard dilations of commuting tuples and here these results have been extended to q-commuting tuples. We are able to do this when q-coefficients `$q_{ij}$' are of modulus one. We introduce `maximal q-commuting subspace ' of a $n$-tuple of operators and `standard q-commuting dilation'. Our main result is that the maximal q-commuting subspace of the standard noncommuting dilation of q-commuting tuple is the `standard q-commuting dilation'. We also introduce q-commuting Fock space as the …
We obtain dilation results which simultaneously generalize Sz.-Nagy dilation theorem for contractions, Ando's dilation theorem for commuting contractions, Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem, and Schur's representation for the unit ball of H^\infty, in the framework of noncommutative varieties in several variables and Poisson kernels on Fock spaces. This leads to inequalities which, in the particular case of two contractions, are sharper than Ando's inequality and Agler-McCarthy's inequality in the setting of commuting contractive matrices or arbitrary commuting contractions of class C_0…
Consider $d$ commuting $C_{0}$-semigroups (or equivalently: $d$-parameter $C_{0}$-semigroups) over a Hilbert space for $d \in \mathbb{N}$. In the literature (\textit{cf.} [29, 26, 27, 23, 18, 25]), conditions are provided to classify the existence of unitary and regular unitary dilations. Some of these conditions require inspecting values of the semigroups, some provide only sufficient conditions, and others involve verifying sophisticated properties of the generators. By focussing on semigroups with bounded generators, we establish a simple and natural condition on the generators, \textit{viz…
A particular case of the fundamental Sz.-Nagy--Foias functional model for a contraction states that a pure contraction always dilates to a pure isometry. We are interested in the similar question for pairs, more precisely: does a pair of commuting pure contractions always dilate to a pair of commuting pure isometries? The purpose of this article is to identify pairs of commuting pure contractions for which the above question has an affirmative answer. Our method is based on an explicit structure of isometric dilation for pure pairs of commuting contractions obtained in a recent work by Das, Sa…
In this note we prove that there exist at least two examples of three commuting, unital, completely positive maps that have no dilation on a type I factor, and no minimal dilation on any von Neumann algebra.
We show that whenever a contractive $k$-tuple $T$ on a finite dimensional space $H$ has a unitary dilation, then for any fixed degree $N$ there is a unitary $k$-tuple $U$ on a finite dimensional space so that $q(T) = P_H q(U) |_H$ for all polynomials $q$ of degree at most $N$.
We study dilations of finite tuples of normal, completely positive and completely contractive maps (which we call CP-maps) acting on a von Neumann algebra, and commuting according to a graph G. We show that if G is acyclic, then a tuple commuting according to it has a simultaneous *-endomorphic dilation, which also commutes according to G. Conversely, if G has a cycle, we exhibit an example of a tuple of CP-maps commuting according to G, which does not have an *-endomorphic dilation commuting according to G. To achieve these results we use dilation theory of representations of subproduct syste…
We prove that every strongly commuting pair of CP_0-semigroups has a minimal E_0-dilation. This is achieved in two major steps, interesting in themselves: 1: we show that a strongly commuting pair of CP_0-semigroups can be represented via a two parameter product system representation; 2: we prove that every fully coisometric product system representation has a fully coisometric, isometric dilation. In particular, we obtain that every commuting pair of CP_0-semigroups on B(H), H finite dimensional, has an E_0-dilation.
A contractive $n$-tuple $A=(A_1,...,A_n)$ has a minimal joint isometric dilation $S=(S_1,...,S_n)$ where the $S_i$'s are isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. This determines a representation of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra. When $A$ acts on a finite dimensional space, the \wot-closed nonself-adjoint algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ generated by $S$ is completely described in terms of the properties of $A$. This provides complete unitary invariants for the corresponding representations. In addition, we show that the algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ is always hyper-reflexive. In the last section, we describe s…
Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, w…
We obtain intertwining dilation theorems for noncommutative regular domains D_f and noncommutative varieties V_J of n-tuples of operators, which generalize Sarason and Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem for commuting contractions. We present several applications including a new proof for the commutant lifting theorem for pure elements in the domain D_f (resp. variety V_J) as well as a Schur type representation for the unit ball of the Hardy algebra associated with the variety V_J. We provide Ando type dilations and inequalities for bi-domains D_f \times D_g and bi-varieties V_J \times V…
In a previous paper, we showed that every strongly commuting pair of CP_0-semigroups on a von Neumann algebra (acting on a separable Hilbert space) has an E_0-dilation. In this paper we show that if one restricts attention to the von Neumann algebra B(H) then the unitality assumption can be dropped, that is, we prove that every pair of strongly commuting CP-semigroups on B(H) has an E-dilation. The proof is significantly different from the proof for the unital case, and is based on a construction of Ptak from the 1980's designed originally for constructing a unitary dilation to a two-parameter…
We study completely contractive representations of product systems of $C^*$-correspondences over semigroups. For a product system of $C^*$-correspondences over the semigroup $\mathbb{N}^2$, we prove that every such representation can be dilated to an isometric (or Toeplitz) representation. We use it to prove that every pair of commuting CP maps on a von Neumann algebra $M$ can be dilated to a commuting pair of endomorphisms (on a larger von Neumann algebra).
We explore aspects of dilation theory in the finite dimensional case and show that for a commuting $n$-tuple of operators $T=(T_1,...,T_n) $ acting on some finite dimensional Hilbert space $H$ and a compact set $X\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ the following are equivalent: 1. $T$ has a normal $ X$-dilation. 2. For any $m\in \mathbb{N}$ there exists some finite dimensional Hilbert space $K$ containing $H$ and a tuple of commuting normal operators $N=(N_1,...,N_n)$ acting on $K$ such that $$ q(T)=P_Hq(N)|_H$$ for all polynomials $q$ of degree at most $m$ and such that the joint spectrum of $N$ is contain…
The celebrated Sz.-Nagy and Foias and Ando theorems state that a single contraction, or a pair of commuting contractions, acting on a Hilbert space always possesses isometric dilation and subsequently satisfies the von Neumann inequality for polynomials in $\mathbb{C}[z]$ or $\mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, respectively. However, in general, neither the existence of isometric dilation nor the von Neumann inequality holds for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions. The goal of this paper is to provide a taste of the isometric dilations, the von Neumann inequality and a sharper version of von …
Let H be a separable Hilbert space. Given two strongly commuting CP_0-semigroups $ϕ$ and $θ$ on B(H), there is a Hilbert space K containing H and two (strongly) commuting E_0-semigroups $α$ and $β$ such that $ϕ_s \circ θ_t (P_H A P_H) = P_H α_s \circ β_t (A) P_H$ for all s,t and all A in B(K). In this note we prove that if $ϕ$ is not an automorphism semigroup then $α$ is cocycle conjugate to the minimal *-endomorphic dilation of $ϕ$, and that if $ϕ$ is an automorphism semigroup then $α$ is also an automorphism semigroup. In particular, we conclude that if $ϕ$ is not an automorphism semigroup a…
Let E be a product system of C*-correspondences over N^r. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of a not necessarily regular isometric dilation of a completely contractive representation of E are established and difference between regular and *-regular dilations discussed. It is in particular shown that a minimal isometric dilation is *-regular if and only if it is doubly commuting. The case of product systems associated with higher-rank graphs is analysed in detail.
Non-commutative versions of Arveson's curvature invariant and Euler characteristic for a commuting $n$-tuple of operators are introduced. The non-commutative curvature invariant is sensitive enough to determine if an $n$-tuple is free. In general both invariants can be thought of as measuring the freeness or curvature of an $n$-tuple. The connection with dilation theory provides motivation and exhibits relationships between the invariants. A new class of examples is used to illustrate the differences encountered in the non-commutative setting and obtain information on the ranges of the invaria…
Let $\mathbb{D}$ denote the unit disc in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ and let $\mathbb{D}^2 = \mathbb{D} \times \mathbb{D}$ be the unit bidisc in $\mathbb{C}^2$. Let $(T_1, T_2)$ be a pair of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Let $\mbox{dim } \mbox{ran}(I_{\mathcal{H}} - T_j T_j^*) < \infty$, $j = 1, 2$, and let $T_1$ be a pure contraction. Then there exists a variety $V \subseteq \overline{\mathbb{D}}^2$ such that for any polynomial $p \in \mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, the inequality \[ \|p(T_1,T_2)\|_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})} \leq \|p\|_V \] holds. If, in addition, $T_2$ i…
