By work of Belyi, the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ of the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers can be embedded into $A=\mathrm{Aut}(\widehat{F_2})$, the automorphism group of the free profinite group $\widehat{F_2}$ on two generators. The image of $G_{\mathbb{Q}}$ lies inside $\widehat{GT}$, the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. While it is known that every abelian representation of $G_{\mathbb{Q}}$ can be extended to $\widehat{GT}$, Lochak and Schneps put forward the challenge of constructing irreducible non-abelian representations of $\widehat{GT}$. We do this virtually, namely by showing that a rich class of arithmetically defined representations of $G_{\mathbb{Q}}$ can be extended to finite index subgroups of $\widehat{GT}$. This is achieved, in fact, by extending these representations all the way to finite index subgroups of $A=\mathrm{Aut}(\widehat{F_2})$. We do this by developing a profinite version of the work of Grunewald and Lubotzky, which provided a rich collection of representations for the discrete group $\mathrm{Aut}(F_d)$.
Let $K$ be a global or local field, $E/K$ a Galois extension, and Br$(E)$ the Brauer group of $E$. This paper shows that if $K$ is a local field, $v$ is its natural discrete valuation, $v'$ is the valuation of $E$ extending $v$, and $q$ is the characteristic of the residue field $\widehat E$ of $(E, v')$, then Br$(E) = \{0\}$ if and only if the following conditions hold: $\widehat E$ contains as a subfield the maximal $p$-extension of $\widehat K$, for each prime $p \neq q$; $\widehat E$ is an algebraically closed field in case the value group $v'(E)$ is $q$-indivisible. When $K$ is a global f…
Based on our previous work on an arithmetic analogue of Christol's theorem, this paper studies in more detail the structure of the lambda-ring $E_K = K \otimes W_{O_K}^a (O_{\bar{K}})$ of algebraic Witt vectors for number fields $K$. First developing general results concerning $E_K$, we apply them to the case when $K$ is an imaginary quadratic field. The main results include the "modularity theorem" for algebraic Witt vectors, which claims that certain deformation families $f: M_2(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}}) \times \mathfrak{H} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ of modular functions of finite level always defi…
Let $K$ be the $N$th layer in the cyclotomic $\widehat{\mathbb{Z}}$-extension $\widehat{\mathbb{Q}}$. Many authors (Aoki, Fukuda, Horie, Ichimura, Inatomi, Komatsu, Miller, Morisawa, Nakajima, Okazaki, Washington,\,$\ldots$) analyse the behavior of the $p$-class groups ${\mathcal C}_K$. We revisit this problem, in a more conceptual form, since computations show that the $p$-torsion group ${\mathcal T}_K$ of the Galois groups of the maximal abelian $p$-ramified pro-$p$-extension of $K$ (Tate--Shafarevich group of $K$) is often non-trivial; this raises questions since $\# {\mathcal T}_K = \# {\m…

This is the sequel to arXiv:2007.01364v1. Let $F$ be any local field with residue characteristic $p>0$, and $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p}$ be the mod $p$ pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke algebra of $\mathbf{GL_2}(F)$. In arXiv:2007.01364v1 we have constructed a parametrization of the $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p}$-modules by certain $\widehat{\mathbf{GL_2}}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$-Satake parameters, together with an antispherical family of $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p}$-modules. Here we let $F=\mathbb{Q}_p$ (and $p\geq 5$) and construct a morphism from $\wid…
We study low-lying zeros of $L$-functions attached to holomorphic cusp forms of level $1$ and large weight. In this family, the Katz--Sarnak heuristic with orthogonal symmetry type was established in the work of Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak for test functions $ϕ$ satisfying the condition supp$(\widehat ϕ) \subset(-2,2)$. We refine their density result by uncovering lower-order terms that exhibit a sharp transition when the support of $\widehat ϕ$ reaches the point $1$. In particular the first of these terms involves the quantity $\widehat ϕ(1)$ which appeared in previous work of Fouvry--Iwaniec and…
In this paper, let $ϕ$ be the Drinfeld module over $\mathbb{F}_{q}(T)$ of prime rank $r$ defined by $$ϕ_T=T+τ^{r-1}+T^{q-1}τ^r.$$ We prove that under certain condition on $\mathbb{F}_q$, the adelic Galois representation $$ρ_ϕ:{\rm{Gal}}(\mathbb{F}_q(T)^{\rm{sep}}/\mathbb{F}_q(T))\longrightarrow \varprojlim_{\mathfrak{a}}{\rm{Aut}}(ϕ[\mathfrak{a}])\cong {\rm{GL_r}}(\widehat{A})$$ is surjective.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $ρ_E\colon {\rm Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\to {\rm GL}(2,\widehat{ \mathbb{Z} })$ be the adelic representation associated to the natural action of Galois on the torsion points of $E(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$. By a theorem of Serre, the image of $ρ_{E}$ is open, but the image is always of index at least $2$ in ${\rm GL}(2,\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$ due to a certain quadratic entanglement amongst division fields. In this paper, we study other types of abelian entanglements. More concretely, we classify the elliptic curves $E/\…
We propose a new method to construct rigid $G$-automorphic representations and rigid $\widehat{G}$-local systems for reductive groups $G$. The construction involves the notion of euphotic representations, and the proof for rigidity involves the geometry of certain Hessenberg varieties.
For $δ>0$ sufficiently small and $A\subset \mathbb{Z}^k$ with $|A+A|\le (2^k+δ)|A|$, we show either $A$ is covered by $m_k(δ)$ parallel hyperplanes, or satisfies $|\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)\setminus A|\le c_kδ|A|$, where $\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)$ is the smallest convex progression (convex set intersected with a sublattice) containing $A$. This generalizes the Freiman-Bilu $2^k$ theorem, Freiman's $3|A|-4$ theorem, and recent sharp stability results of the present authors for sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^k$ conjectured by Figalli and Jerison.
For a finite abelian group $G$, a nonempty subset $A$ of $G$, and a positive integer $h$, we let $hA$ denote the $h$-fold sumset of $A$; that is, $hA$ is the collection of sums of $h$ not-necessarily-distinct elements of $A$. Furthermore, for a positive integer $s$, we set $[0,s] A=\cup_{h=0}^s h A$. We say that $A$ is a generating set of $G$ if there is a positive integer $s$ for which $[0,s] A=G$. The $h$-critical number $χ(G,h)$ of $G$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $m$ for which $hA=G$ holds for every $m$-subset $A$ of $G$; similarly, $χ(G,[0,s])$ is the smallest positive inte…
The exact set of periodic points in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ of the algebraic function $\widehat{F}(z)=(-1\pm \sqrt{1-z^4})/z^2$ is shown to consist of the coordinates of certain solutions $(x,y)=(π, ξ)$ of the Fermat equation $x^4+y^4=1$ in ring class fields $Ω_f$ over imaginary quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ of odd conductor $f$, where $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$). This is shown to result from the fact that the $2$-adic function $F(z)=(-1+ \sqrt{1-z^4})/z^2$ is a lift of the Frobenius automorphism on the coordinates $π$ for which $|π|_2<1$, for any $d \equiv 7$ (mod $8$), when consider…
We construct extensions of the field of rational numbers with the Galois group G_2(F_p) by reducing p-adic representations attached to automorphic representations.
For a local field $F$ and an Artinian local coefficient ring $Λ$ with the same positive residue characteristic $p$ we define, for any $e\in{\mathbb N}$, a category ${\mathfrak C}^{(e)}(Λ)$ of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$-equivariant coefficient systems on the Bruhat-Tits tree $X$ of ${\rm PGL}_2(F)$. There is an obvious functor from the category of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$-representations over $Λ$ to ${\mathfrak C}^{(e)}(Λ)$. If $F={\mathbb Q}_p$ then ${\mathfrak C}^{(1)}(Λ)$ is equivalent to the category of smooth ${\rm GL}_2({\mathbb Q}_p)$-representations over $Λ$ generated by their invariants under a pro-$p$-Iw…
