Let $Ω$ be a bounded, smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N},$ $N\geq1.$ For each $p>N$ we study the optimal function $s=s_{p}$ in the pointwise inequality \[ \left\vert v(x)\right\vert \leq s(x)\left\Vert \nabla v\right\Vert _{L^{p}(Ω)},\quad\forall\,(x,v)\in\overlineΩ\times W_{0}% ^{1,p}(Ω). \] We show that $s_{p}\in C_{0}^{0,1-(N/p)}(\overlineΩ)$ and that $s_{p}$ converges pointwise to the distance function to the boundary, as $p\rightarrow\infty.$ Moreover, we prove that if $Ω$ is convex, then $s_{p}$ is concave and has a unique maximum point.
A priori estimates for the weak solutions the Dirichlet problem for the uniformly higher-order elliptic equations in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \Rn$ in generalized weighted Sobolev-Morrey spaces are obtained.
We present a self-contained proof of Uhlenbeck's decomposition theorem for $Ω\in L^p(\mathbb{B}^n,so(m)\otimesΛ^1\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $p\in (1,n)$ with Sobolev type estimates in the case $p \in[n/2,n)$ and Morrey-Sobolev type estimates in the case $p\in (1,n/2)$. We also prove an analogous theorem in the case when $Ω\in L^p( \mathbb{B}^n, TCO_{+}(m) \otimes Λ^1\mathbb{R}^n)$, which corresponds to Uhlenbeck's theorem with conformal gauge group.
Two Morrey-Sobolev inequalities (with support-bound and $L^1-$bound, respectively) are investigated on complete Riemannian manifolds with their sharp constants in $\mathbb R^n$. We prove the following results in both cases: $\bullet$ If $(M,g)$ is a {\it Cartan-Hadamard manifold} which verifies the $n-$dimensional Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, sharp Morrey-Sobolev inequalities hold on $(M,g)$. Moreover, extremals exist if and only if $(M,g)$ is isometric to the standard Euclidean space $(\mathbb R^n,e)$. $\bullet$ If $(M,g)$ has {\it non-negative Ricci curvature}, $(M,g)$ supports the sharp Morr…
The paper deals with the operator $u\rightarrow gu$ defined in the Sobolev space $W^{r,p}(Ω)$ and which takes values in $L^p(Ω)$ when $Ω$ is an unbounded open subset in $R^n$. The functions $g$ belong to wider spaces of $L^p$ connected with the Morrey type spaces. $L^p$ estimates and compactness results are stated.
We prove interpolation estimates between Morrey-Campanato spaces and Sobolev spaces. These estimates give in particular concentration-compactness inequalities in the translation-invariant and in the translation- and dilation-invariant case. They also give in particular interpolation estimates between Sobolev spaces and functions of bounded mean oscillation. The proofs rely on Sobolev integral representation formulae and maximal function theory. Fractional Sobolev spaces are also covered.
We consider elliptic equations with operators $L=a^{ij}D_{ij}+b^{i}D_{i}-c$ with $a$ being almost in VMO, $b$ in a Morrey class containing $ L_{d}$, and $c\geq0$ in a Morrey class containing $L_{d/2}$. We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces of $Lu=f\in L_{p}$ in bounded $C^{1,1}$-domains, and of $λu-Lu=f$ in the whole space for any $λ>0$. Weak uniqueness of the martingale problem associated with such operators is also discussed.
When the growth at infinity of a function $u$ on $\Bbb{R}^{N}$ is compared with the growth of $|x|^{s}$ for some $s\in \Bbb{R},$ this comparison is invariably made pointwise. This paper argues that the comparison can also be made in a suitably defined $L^{p}$ sense for every $1\leq p<\infty $ and that, in this perspective, inequalities of Hardy, Sobolev or Morrey type account for the fact that sub $|x|^{-N/p}$ growth of $\nabla u$ in the $% L^{p} $ sense implies sub $|x|^{1-N/p}$ growth of $u$ in the $L^{q}$ sense for well chosen values of $q.$ By investigating how sub $|x|^{s}$ growth of $\na…
Combining the sharp isoperimetric inequality established by Z. Balogh and A. Kristály [Math. Ann., in press, doi:10.1007/s00208-022-02380-1] with an anisotropic symmetrization argument, we establish sharp Morrey-Sobolev inequalities on $n$-dimensional Finsler manifolds having nonnegative $n$-Ricci curvature. A byproduct of this method is a Hardy-Sobolev-type inequality in the same geometric setting. As applications, by using variational arguments, we guarantee the existence/multiplicity of solutions for certain eigenvalue problems and elliptic PDEs involving the Finsler-Laplace operator. Our r…
In this work we improve the sharp Hardy inequality in the case $p>n$ by adding an optimal weighted Hoelder semi-norm. To achieve this we first obtain a local improvement. We also obtain a refinement of both the Sobolev inequality for $p>n$ and the Hardy inequality, the latter having the best constant.
In this note we give a proof of the Sobolev and Morrey embedding theorems based on the representation of functions in terms of the fundamental solution of suitable partial differential operators. We also prove the compactness of the Sobolev embedding. We first describe this method in the classical setting, where the fundamental solution of the Laplace equation is used, to recover the classical Sobolev and Morrey theorems. We next consider degenerate Kolmogorov equations. In this case, the fundamental solution is invariant with respect to a non-Euclidean translation group and the usual convolut…
For a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and $p>n$, Morrey's inequality implies that there is $c>0$ such that $$ c\|u\|^p_{\infty}\le \int_Ω|Du|^pdx $$ for each $u$ belonging to the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}_0(Ω)$. We show that the ratio of any two extremal functions is constant provided that $Ω$ is convex. We also explain why this property fails to hold in general and verify that convexity is not a necessary condition for a domain to have this property. As a by product, we obtain the uniqueness of an optimization problem involving the Green's function for the $p$-Laplacian.
In this article the authors study complex interpolation of Sobolev-Morrey spaces and their generalizations, Lizorkin-Triebel-Morrey spaces. Both scales are considered on bounded domains. Under certain conditions on the parameters the outcome belongs to the scale of the so-called diamond spaces.
The aim of this paper is to consider the linear ultraparabolic equation with bounded and VMO coefficients $a_{ij} (z)$. Assume that the operator $L_0$ obtained by freezing the coefficients $a_{ij}(z)$ at any point ${z_0} \in {\mathbb{R}^{N + 1}}$ is hypoelliptic. We first establish a Caccioppoli type inequality by choosing a cutoff function, a Sobolev type inequality by prosperities of the fundamental solution to $L_0$, and a Poincaré type inequality with a new cutoff function. Then $L^p$ estimate for weak solutions is derived by using the reverse Hölder inequality on homogeneous spaces. Final…
With a view towards Riemannian or sub-Riemannian manifolds, RCD metric spaces and specially fractals, this paper makes a step further in the development of a theory of heat semigroup based $(1,p)$ Sobolev spaces in the general framework of Dirichlet spaces. Under suitable assumptions that are verified in a variety of settings, the tools developed by D. Bakry, T. Coulhon, M. Ledoux and L. Saloff-Coste in the paper "Sobolev inequalities in disguise" allow us to obtain the whole family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Trudinger-Moser inequalities with optimal exponents. The latter depend not only on th…
We develop a technique to obtain new symmetrization inequalities that provide a unified framework to study Sobolev inequalities, concentration inequalities and sharp integrability of solutions of elliptic equations
In this paper we strengthen to Morrey-Lorentz spaces the famous trace principle introduced by Adams. More precisely, we show that Riesz potential $I_α$ is continuous \begin{equation} \Vert I_αf\Vert_{\mathcal{M}_{q, \infty}^{λ_{\ast}}(dμ)}\lesssim \Arrowvertμ\Arrowvert_β^{{1}/{q}}\,\Vert f\Vert_{\mathcal{M}_{p, \infty}^λ(dν)}\nonumber\\[0.02in] \end{equation} if and only if the Radon measure $dμ$ supported in $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is controlled by $$\Arrowvertμ\Arrowvert_β=\sup_{x\in\mathbb{R}^n,\,r>0}r^{-β}μ(B(x,r))<\infty$$ provided that $1<p<q<\infty$ satisfies $n-αp<β\leq n,\; α=\frac{n}…
The purpose of this paper is twofold. We first prove a weighted Sobolev inequality and part of a weighted Morrey's inequality, where the weights are a power of the mean curvature of the level sets of the function appearing in the inequalities. Then, as main application of our inequalities, we establish new $L^q$ and $W^{1,q}$ estimates for semi-stable solutions of $-Δu=g(u)$ in a bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. These estimates lead to an $L^{2n/(n-4)}(Ω)$ bound for the extremal solution of $-Δu=λf(u)$ when $n\geq 5$ and the domain is convex. We recall that extremal solutions are known to…
In this paper we prove a Sobolev and a Morrey type inequality involving the mean curvature and the tangential gradient with respect to the level sets of the function that appears in the inequalities. Then, as an application, we establish \textit{a priori} estimates for semi-stable solutions of $-Δ_p u= g(u)$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we obtain new $L^r$ and $W^{1,r}$ bounds for the extremal solution $u^\star$ when the domain is strictly convex. More precisely, we prove that $u^\star\in L^\infty(Ω)$ if $n\leq p+2$ and $u^\star\in L^{\frac{np}{n-p-2}}(Ω)\…
We extend a Poincaré-type inequality for functions with large zero-sets by Jiang and Lin to fractional Sobolev spaces. As a consequence, we obtain a Hausdorff dimension estimate on the size of zero sets for fractional Sobolev functions whose inverse is integrable. Also, for a suboptimal Hausdorff dimension estimate, we give a completely elementary proof based on a pointwise Poincaré-style inequality.
In this short paper the discussion of the pointwise characterization of functions $f$ in the Sobolev space $W^{m,p}(\R^n)$ given in the recent paper (Bojarski) is supplemented in \SS1 by a direct, essentially geometric, proof of the novel inequality (for $m>1$), appearing in Bojarski apparently for the first time, and involving the use of the $m$-th difference of the function $f$. Moreover in \SS2 some additional comments to the text in Bojarski are given and a natural class of Sobolev spaces in domains $G$ in $\R^n$ is defined. \SS3 contains some final remarks.
In this note, we establish a $L^p-$version of the Poincaré--Sobolev inequalities in the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb H^n$. The interest of this result is that it relates both the Poincaré (or Hardy) inequality and the Sobolev inequality with the sharp constant in $\mathbb H^n$. Our approach is based on the comparison of the $L^p-$norm of gradient of the symmetric decreasing rearrangement of a function in both the hyperbolic space and the Euclidean space, and the sharp Sobolev inequalities in Euclidean spaces. This approach also gives the proof of the Poincaré--Gagliardo--Nirenberg and Poincaré--…
On doubling metric measure spaces endowed with a strongly local regular Dirichlet form, we show some characterisations of pointwise upper bounds of the heat kernel in terms of global scale-invariant inequalities that correspond respectively to the Nash inequality and to a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality when the volume growth is polynomial. This yields a new proof and a generalisation of the well-known equivalence between classical heat kernel upper bounds and relative Faber-Krahn inequalities or localized Sobolev or Nash inequalities. We are able to treat more general pointwise estimates,…
Our aim is to characterize the homogeneous fractional Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces $\mathcal{D}^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and their embeddings, for $s \in (0,1]$ and $p\ge 1$. They are defined as the completion of the set of smooth and compactly supported test functions with respect to the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorms. For $s\,p < n$ or $s = p = n = 1$ we show that $\mathcal{D}^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is isomorphic to a suitable function space, whereas for $s\,p \ge n$ it is isomorphic to a space of equivalence classes of functions, differing by an additive constant. As one of our main tools, we…
A theory of Sobolev inequalities in arbitrary open sets of Euclidean space is established. Boundary regularity of domains is replaced with information on boundary traces of trial functions and of their derivatives up to some explicit minimal order. The relevant Sobolev inequalities involve constants independent of the geometry of the domain, and exhibit the same critical exponents as in the classical inequalities on regular domains. Our approach relies upon new representation formulas for Sobolev functions, and on ensuing pointwise estimates which hold in any open set.
We consider the series expansion of the $L^p$-Hardy inequality of \cite{BFT2}, in the particular case where the distance is taken from an interior point of a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $1<p\neq n$. For $p<n$ we improve it by adding as a remainder term an optimally weighted critical Sobolev norm, generalizing the $p=2$ result of \cite{FT} and settling the open question raised in \cite{BFT1}. For $p>n$ we improve it by adding as a remainder term the optimally weighted Hölder seminorm, extending the Hardy-Morrey inequality of \cite{Ps} to the series case.
We construct planar bi-Sobolev mappings whose local volume distortion is bounded from below by a given function $f\in L^p$ with $p>1$, i.e. bi-Sobolev solutions for the prescribed Jacobian inequality in the plane for right-hand sides $f\in L^p$. More precisely, for any $1<q<(p+1)/2$ we construct a solution which belongs to $W^{1,q}$ and which preserves the boundary pointwise. For bounded right-hand sides $f\in L^{\infty}$, we provide bi-Lipschitz solutions. The basic building block of our construction are Lipschitz maps which stretch a given compact subset of the unit square by a given factor …
We consider the optimizers $u$ in the Hardy-Sobolev inequality for the space $\dot{W}^{s,p}({\mathbb R}^N)$ with order of differentiability $s\in ]0,1[$. After proving existence through concentration-compactness, we derive the pointwise asymptotic $u(x)\simeq |x|^{-\frac{N-ps}{p-1}}$ for large $|x|$ and the summability estimate $u\in \dot{W}^{s,γ}({\mathbb R}^N)$ for all $γ>\frac{N(p-1)}{N-s}$. These estimates are optimal in the limit $s\to 1^-$, in which case optimizers are explicitly known.
We consider a multidimensional version of an inequality due to Leray as a substitute for Hardy's inequality in the case $p=n\geq2.$ In this paper we provide an optimal Sobolev-type improvement of this substitute, analogous to the corresponding improvements obtained for $p=2<n$ in S. Filippas, A. Tertikas, Optimizing improved Hardy inequalities, J. Funct. Anal. 192 (1) (2002) 186--233, and for $p>n\geq1$ in G. Psaradakis, An optimal Hardy-Morrey inequality, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 45 (3-4) (2012) 421--441.
For functions in the Sobolev space $H^s$ and decreasing sequences $t_n\to 0$ we examine convergence almost everywhere of the generalized Schrödinger means on the real line, given by \[S^af(x,t_n)=\exp( it_n (-\partial_{xx})^{a/2})f(x);\] here $a>0$, $a\neq 1$. For decreasing convex sequences we obtain a simple characterization of convergence a.e. for all functions in $H^s$ when $0<s<\min\{a/4,1/4\}$ and $a\neq 1$. We prove sharp quantitative local and global estimates for the associated maximal functions. We also obtain sharp results for the case $a=1$.
This short note investigates the compact embedding of degenerate matrix weighted Sobolev spaces into weighted Lebesgue spaces. The Sobolev spaces explored are defined as the abstract completion of Lipschitz functions in a bounded domain $Ω$ with respect to the norm: $$\|f\|_{QH^{1,p}(v,μ;Ω)} = \|f\|_{L^p_v(Ω)} + \|\nabla f\|_{\mathcal{L}^p_Q(μ;Ω)}$$ where the weight $v$ is comparable to a power of the pointwise operator norm of the matrix valued function $Q=Q(x)$ in $Ω$. Following our main theorem, we give an explicit application where degeneracy is controlled through an ellipticity condition …
We prove a characterization result in the spirit of the Kinderlehrer-Pedregal Theorem for Young measures generated by gradients of Sobolev maps satisfying the orientation-preserving constraint, that is the pointwise Jacobian is positive almost everywhere. The argument to construct the appropriate generating sequences from such Young measures is based on a variant of convex integration in conjunction with an explicit lamination construction in matrix space. Our generating sequence is bounded in $L^p$ for $p$ less than the space dimension, a regime in which the pointwise Jacobian loses some of i…
We consider a diffusion process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a generator of the form $ L:=\frac 12 e^{V(x)}div(e^{-V(x)}\nabla ) $ where $V$ is measurable and periodic. We only assume that $e^V$ and $e^{-V}$ are locally integrable. We then show that, after proper rescaling, the law of the diffusion converges to a Brownian motion for Lebesgue almost all starting points. This pointwise invariance principle was previously known under uniform ellipticity conditions (when $V$ is bounded), and was recently proved under more restrictive $L^p$ conditions on $e^V$ and $e^{-V}$. Our approach uses Dirichlet fo…
