Randomness is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics, which is an invaluable resource for both classical and quantum technologies. Practical quantum random number generators (QRNG) usually need to trust their devices, but their security can be jeopardized in case of imperfections or malicious external actions. In this work, we present a robust implementation of a Semi-Device-Independent QRNG that guarantees both security and fast generation rates. The system works in a prepare and measure scenario where measurement and source are untrusted, but a bound on the energy of the prepared states is assumed. Our implementation exploits heterodyne detection, which offers increased generation rate and improved long-term stability compared to alternative measurement strategies. In particular, due to the tomographic properties of heterodyne measurement, we can compensate for fast phase fluctuations via post-processing, avoiding complex active phase stabilization systems. As a result, our scheme combines high security and speed with a simple setup featuring only commercial-off-the-shelf components, making it an attractive solution in many practical scenarios.
Random numbers are commonly used in many different fields, ranging from simulations in fundamental science to security applications. In some critical cases, as Bell's tests and cryptography, the random numbers are required to be both secure (i.e. known only by the legitimate user) and to be provided at an ultra-fast rate (i.e. larger than Gbit/s). However, practical generators are usually considered trusted, but their security can be compromised in case of imperfections or malicious external actions. In this work we introduce an efficient protocol which guarantees security and speed in the gen…

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution exploits coherent measurements of the electromagnetic field, i.e., homodyne or heterodyne detection. The most advanced security proofs developed so far relied on idealised mathematical models for such measurements, which assume that the measurement outcomes are continuous and unbounded variables. As physical measurement devices have finite range and precision, these mathematical models only serve as an approximation. It is expected that, under suitable conditions, the predictions obtained using these simplified models are in good agreement with the …
Harnessing quantum processes is an efficient method to generate truly indeterministic random numbers, which are of fundamental importance for cryptographic protocols, security applications or Monte-Carlo simulations. Recently, quantum random number generators based on continuous variables have gathered a lot of attention due to the potentially high bit rates they can deliver. Especially quadrature measurements on shot-noise limited states have been studied in detail as they do not offer any side information to potential adversaries under ideal experimental conditions. However, they may be subj…

Recently, semi-device independent protocols have attracted increasing attention, guaranteeing security with few hypotheses and experimental simplicity. In this paper, we demonstrate a many-outcomes scheme with the binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) for a semi-device independent protocol based on the energy assumption. We show in theory that the number of certified random bits of the d-outcomes system outperforms the standard scheme (binary-outcomes). Furthermore, we compare the results of two well-known measurement schemes, homodyne and heterodyne detection. Lastly, taking into account the exper…
A quantum random-number generator (QRNG) can theoretically generate unpredictable random numbers with perfect devices and is an ideal and secure source of random numbers for cryptography. However, the practical implementations always contain imperfections, which will greatly influence the randomness of the final output and even open loopholes to eavesdroppers. Recently, Thewes et al. experimentally demonstrated a continuous-variable eavesdropping attack, based on heterodyne detection, on a trusted continuous-variable QRNG in Phys. Rev. A 100, 052318 (2019), yet like in many other practical con…
The application of open quantum systems in biological processes such as photosynthetic complexes has recently received renewed attention. In this paper, we introduce a quantum algorithm for simulation of Markovian dynamics of the Fenna-Matthew-Olson (FMO) complex that exists in photosynthesis using a "universal set" of a one-parameter semigroup of generators. We investigate the details of each generator that has been obtained from spectral decomposition of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan (GKS) matrix by using linear combination and unitary conjugation. Also, we present a simple quantum circui…
The cross-correlation sensitivity of two identical balanced photodiode heterodyne receivers is characterized. Both balanced photodiodes receive the same weak signal split up equally, a situation equivalent to an astronomical spatial interferometer. A common local oscillator (LO) is also split up equally and its phase difference between both receivers is stabilized. We show by semi-classical photon deletion theory that the post-detection laser shot noise contributions on both receivers must be completely uncorrelated in this case of passing three power splitters. We measured the auto- and cross…
A survey of the probabilistic approaches to quantum dynamical semigroups with unbounded generators is given. An emphasis is made upon recent advances in the structural theory of covariant Markovian master equations. The relations with the classical Levy-Khinchin formula are elucidated. As an example, a complete characterizations of the Galilean covariant irreversible quantum Markovian evolutions is given in terms of the corresponding quantum master and Langevin equations. Important topics for future investigation are outlined.
Semigroups describing the time evolution of open quantum systems in finite-dimensional spaces have generators of a special form, known as Lindblad generators. These generators and the corresponding processes of time evolution are analyzed, characterized as Decay, Dissipation and Dephasing. In relation to these processes the Hilbert space of the system is equipped with a special structure, a decomposition into a sum of mutually orthogonal subspaces. The complete set of all the stationary states and the asymptotic behavior of the evolutions are presented in detail. Some unusual special facts abo…
We find the structure of generators of norm continuous quantum Markov semigroups on B(h) that are symmetric with respect to the scalar product tr(ρ^{1/2}xρ^{1/2}y) induced by a faithful normal invariant state invariant state ρand satisfy two quantum generalisations of the classical detailed balance condition related with this non-commutative notion of symmetry: the so-called standard detailed balance condition and the standard detailed balance condition with an antiunitary time reversal.
We report upon a novel principle for realization of a fast nondeterministic random number generator whose randomness relies on intrinsic randomness of the quantum physical processes of photonic emission in semiconductors and subsequent detection by the photoelectric effect. Timing information of detected photons is used to generate binary random digits-bits. The bit extraction method based on restartable clock theoretically eliminates both bias and autocorrelation while reaching efficiency of almost 0.5 bits per random event. A prototype has been built and statistically tested.
We provide a class of quantum evolution beyond Markovian semigroup. This class is governed by a hybrid Davies like generator such that dissipation is controlled by a suitable memory kernel and decoherence by standard GKLS generator. These two processes commute and both of them commute with the unitary evolution controlled by the systems Hamiltonian. The corresponding memory kernel gives rise to semi-Markov evolution of the diagonal elements of the density matrix. However, the corresponding evolution needs not be completely positive. The role of decoherence generator is to restore complete posi…
Semiclassical models for multiple-user optical communication cannot assess the ultimate limits on reliable communication as permitted by the laws of physics. In all optical communications settings that have been analyzed within a quantum framework so far, the gaps between the quantum limit to the capacity and the Shannon limit for structured receivers become most significant in the low photon-number regime. Here, we present a quantum treatment of a multiple-transmitter multiple-receiver multi-spatial-mode free-space interference channel with diffraction-limited loss and a thermal background. W…
We study the effect of frequent projective measurements on the dynamics of quantum self-sustaining systems, by considering the prototypical example of the quantum Van der Pol oscillator. Quantum fluctuations are responsible for phase diffusion which progressively blurs the semiclassical limit cycle dynamics and synchronization, either to an external driving, or between two coupled self-sustained oscillators. We show that by subjecting the system to repeated measurements of heterodyne type at an appropriate repetition frequency one can significantly suppress phase diffusion without spoiling the…
In this paper, we propose the quantum semi-supervised generative adversarial network (qSGAN). The system is composed of a quantum generator and a classical discriminator/classifier (D/C). The goal is to train both the generator and the D/C, so that the latter may get a high classification accuracy for a given dataset. The generator needs neither any data loading nor to generate a pure quantum state, while it is expected to serve as a stronger adversary than a classical one thanks to its rich expressibility. These advantages are demonstrated in a numerical simulation.
Semigroups describing the time evolution of open quantum systems in finite dimensional spaces have generators of a special form, known as Lindblad generators. The simple generators, characterized by only one operator, are analyzed. The complete set of all the stationary states is presented in detail, including a formula to calculate a stationary state from the generating operator. Also the opposite task can be fulfilled, to construct an evolution leading to a prescribed stationary state.
Using the tool of quantum characteristic functions of n-mode states in the boson Fock space Γ(C_n) we construct a semigroup of quantum information channels. This leads to a special class of one-parameter semigroups of such channels. These semigroups are concrete but their generators have unbounded operator coefficients. These one-parameter semigroups are also quantum dynamical semigroups and the form of the generators involve additional features which do not appear in the standard GKSL form. A heuristic discussion of the form of these generators is included. In the wake of this analysis many o…
Quantum dynamical semigroups play an important role in the description of physical processes such as diffusion, radiative decay or other non-equilibrium events. Taking strongly continuous and trace preserving semigroups into consideration, we show that, under a special criterion, the generator of such a group admits a certain generalized standard form, thereby shedding new light on known approaches in this direction. Furthermore, we illustrate our analysis in concrete examples.
Quantum devices are subject to natural decay. We propose to study these decay processes as the Markovian evolution of quantum channels, which leads us to dynamical semigroups of superchannels. A superchannel is a linear map that maps quantum channels to quantum channels, while satisfying suitable consistency relations. If the input and output quantum channels act on the same space, then we can consider dynamical semigroups of superchannels. No useful constructive characterization of the generators of such semigroups is known. We characterize these generators in two ways: First, we give an effi…
We show that the generator of a GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroup can be written as the square of a derivation. This generalizes a result of Cipriani and Sauvageot for tracially symmetric semigroups. Compared to the tracially symmetric case, the derivations in the general case satisfy a twisted product rule, reflecting the non-triviality of their modular group. This twist is captured by the new concept of Tomita bimodules we introduce. If the quantum Markov semigroup satisfies a certain additional regularity condition, the associated Tomita bimodule can be realized inside the $L^2$ space …
In view of controlling finite dimensional open quantum systems, we provide a unified Lie-semigroup framework describing the structure of completely positive trace-preserving maps. It allows (i) to identify the Kossakowski-Lindblad generators as the Lie wedge of a subsemigroup, (ii) to link properties of Lie semigroups such as divisibility with Markov properties of quantum channels, and (iii) to characterise reachable sets and controllability in open systems. We elucidate when time-optimal controls derived for the analogous closed system already give good fidelities in open systems and when a m…
In this note we prove a refined version of the Christensen-Evans theorem for generators of uniformly continuous GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups. We use this result to show the existence of GNS-symmetric extensions of GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups. In particular, this implies that the generators of GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on finite-dimensional von Neumann algebra can be written in the form specified by Alicki's theorem.
